@Catija I'm vaguely convinced a lot of chat issues are wetware. Though I wouldn't say no to, or suggest tweaks to the mod tooling

1:17 AM
It's sorta difficult to know there's a wetware problem if the tooling is lacking.
I mean, if you're in a room all the time and see notices like kicks and check in on suspensions... fine... but being able to go into a room that no mods hang out in and see the history and the users and stuff... is difficult.

1:36 AM
@snailboat I'm not sure. They're a minority, not sure how large a minority. Over 50% have programming skills. Which doesn't mean they understand how to use the site. But hopefully the new UI will fix that

huh, morning...

2 hours later…
3:17 AM
@Catija and that's a problem inherent to chat moderation to me.
I think you've heard me argue a lot over how chat moderation needs to be realtime when there's a problem, but its a long term process of actually working with people.

FR: chat flag notify RO & mods in real time (also, on mobile app)

@SomewhatMemorableName it happens in realtime. Which is also a problem
If we need tooling, it needs to be per room - and let us see kicks, flags and stars per room and who did/recieved them as appropriate

3:57 AM
@JourneymanGeek Not to mention that the staff tend to outright delete if they see them... other than Robert who tends to just close.

@Catija ... we talking meta or chat? ;p

Your answer to Monica's question.

I've always taken closing/deleting by users the closest to what they're doing... if they're deleting without commenting, they must have a reason for it?

@Catija but there's relatively few staff who do it - and I don't really blame em.

3:59 AM
Well... there's few enough active regularly on MSE, too.

@Catija which baffles me a bit, but I'm sure there's a good reason.

> They're the navel of the SE administrators, always available for gazing.

@Catija Well, I've always assumed least lately there's a lot of stuff going on behind the scenes
I mean, SE's a lot more than Q&A, and there's been various attempts to grow past the core/public Q&A

Oh, that wasn't really a response, so much that it was an odd thing to say...
@JourneymanGeek Less of that, now... with the focus on Enterprise/Teams.

oh
that's shog ;)

4:05 AM
Was it?

Yup
Jeff was a lot less... poetic.

It's odd... I don't think I noticed how guy-heavy the CMs are...

@Catija I think historically it was 1:4?
but there were 3+1 CMs
I think CHAOS was about 50/50
but shrug I do think that gender dosen't quite matter in this role, or any role ;)

Now it's 8:1:1, I guess?

lol
err... really?
I didn't realise there was no other female CMs other than ana (and of course we don't know about the other one, and tbh, I love that mystery ;) )

4:09 AM
10 total, only Abby and Grace Note aren't declared male, as far as I'm aware?

ah
ya
ah, not counting ana
Abby's ex chaos.

Yeah, Ana's already off the list. Still waiting for the new one. (going based on the Community Team post).

ya
I've interacted with ana before so... forgot about abby :(

Abby is awesome. :D

4:20 AM
with hair

4:31 AM
@Catija true but I quite literally go "Oh, I talked to ana when foo... also, one of my users was super creepy about her and had to be smacked down"
;)

... ewww.
Not the best note to end on but... I'm going to bed. :/

@Catija specific user is odd. And mostly harmless. ANd loves to test my patience ;)

5:39 AM
Can someone please provide me an SEDE query to search for answers by Shog whose last comment was by me?
Glad you both are ROs

tbh, I'd tell you that even if I wasn't ;)

When the cats are away, the hedgehogs will play

6:01 AM
@JourneymanGeek what items exactly? and what is the shipping policy to other countries

@user1306322 100k ... mug (if available), T shirt, water bottle (if available) site stickers IIRC
and I have never had issues with swag to singapore
Other countries, depends, I've heard of folks stuff getting lost getting sent to india
donno about 250k

6:15 AM
... unicorn painting

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I know spellcheck but err... some folk get annoyed when you edit correct british english spelling to filthy colonial american spelling
I personally am meh over that but... ;p

@JourneymanGeek I consider blaming myself using Grammarly that specifies which English the user prefers...
so when I edit someone's post...
[fill in the blank]

@SomewhatMemorableName I use british spelling (mostly?) but don't get too bothered by AME spelling

[Conversations Gone Awry: Detecting Early Signs of Conversational Failure - to be published in Association for Computational Linguistics](https://arxiv.org/abs/1805.05345)

"One of the main challenges online social systems face is the prevalence of antisocial behavior, such as harassment and personal attacks. In this work, we introduce the task of predicting from the very start of a conversation whether it will get out of hand. As opposed to detecting undesirable behavior after the fact, this task aims to enable early, actionable prediction at a time when the conversation might still be sal

6:22 AM
I also posted this on Charcoal, but I guess this is better suited here after the recent comments blog post

@GaurangTandon assuming good intent from both sides... ;p

I guess....
Opinion mining (sometimes known as sentiment analysis or emotion AI) refers to the use of natural language processing, text analysis, computational linguistics, and biometrics to systematically identify, extract, quantify, and study affective states and subjective information. Sentiment analysis is widely applied to voice of the customer materials such as reviews and survey responses, online and social media, and healthcare materials for applications that range from marketing to customer service to clinical medicine. Generally speaking, sentiment analysis aims to determine the attitude of a speaker...

Are you Dutch? If yes, awry conversation ....

and that both folks are happy to let a robot tell them to chill.

@JourneymanGeek That's something I can see pissing a lot of people off

6:26 AM
yup ;p

I prefer to let 2 robots have a conversation instead and we tell them to chill...

At least the bot gets harassed in that case ...

@JourneymanGeek :P

I mean
I like tech as much as the next guy
but sometimes you actually have to let folks sort things out organically

so, "early, actionable prediction" = auto flag for mod attention

6:29 AM
@SomewhatMemorableName I guess
Seems very big brother still

@JourneymanGeek hmm... <nod>
but I think rude comments should be done away with as early as possible
like this thing
38
Q: Heat Detector - analysing comments to find heat

Petter FribergGeneral Heat detector is a StackApp whose goal is to catch offensive, rude, snarky comments, and comments that leads to abusive content (offensive, spam posts, or previous offensive comments). It is running a bot that queries comments from the Stack Exchange API and retrieves all comments posted...

Well, its as much a broader community/communication issue as a technical one
Deleting rude comments takes away the symptoms but not the causes

I see

Deleting rude users... oops

@JourneymanGeek Some of that is autocorrect - for example, if I edit something right after a British spelling word, it corrects it to American spelling. For others, it's my browser's spell check telling me I spelled a word wrong and suggesting the American spelling.

6:48 AM
@SomewhatMemorableName Bot-Bot conversations are fun chat.stackoverflow.com/rooms/111347/conversation/…
Bot-Human conversations are even better chat.stackoverflow.com/rooms/111347/conversation/…

In the archives somewhere is a conversation between me and the Feeds user

7:03 AM
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Is Feeds being sentient?

@Mithrandir Well, the robots were there for some time.

7:47 AM
@SomewhatMemorableName We'd be short a few regulars ;)
I've never ever deleted a user for being rude
One did self delete, after being told once he was unwelcome, coming back and trying to gaslight a mod....

We're looking for mods made of non-combustible materials ...

@JourneymanGeek What a unwelcoming action, telling someone they're unwelcome...

@Magisch true, but sometimes sadly enough, its necessary

maybe we need a rude.se where we migrate those rude users to?

maybe?
Its less of a situation on most of SE I guess?
By right, there's no space to be rude.

7:59 AM
Okay, I see support for this, let me open an A51 proposal ....

Chat's different I guess?

chat.rude.se will be in place
all users will be kicked from the chatrooms they enter

Maybe SE can open rude.SE and make a rule like subreddit banbots
If you were ever active in X subreddit, you get autobanned from Y subreddit

@Magisch so if you posted on lifehacks, you get shadow-ban on every other site?

8:05 AM
@Derpy Subreddits use it for purposes like "if you ever posted to SRS, you're autobanned from this subreddit because only toxic people post there". The goal is to disincentivize participation in the blacklisted subreddits
Much like twitter banlists where you get autoblocked if you follow or retweet certain people

@Magisch reminds me of I local youtuber that I "hate" very much. Boys-be-boys attitude, offensive video titles and preview thumbnails (I don't comment on the actual content just because I don't watch them), abusive videos with pranks on random people (like calling people in the middle of the night and such)....
millions subscribers - always on youtube frontpage
there have been multiple petitions in the country to ask youtube to remove his channel from the front page.
no effect

@Derpy Youtube understandably doesn't want to get into policing the morals of its users
Because if they do there's worse then that guy waiting in the shadows

shadow? Who said shadow? :D

@Magisch Facebook should have such a system too, but then reversed. If I've blocked Sylvana Simons, I don't want to see her posts because my friends reacted to them... Which is how she still gets on my timeline from time to time

Who's Sylvana Simons?

8:19 AM
Do we even want to know?

Probably not...

Yes, you do!

@ShadowWizard Oh... Dutch famous person gone politician

oh, like Arnold?

@rene I'm on the 'you don't want to know' camp as well :P
I should not have said that...

8:20 AM
you did

for all we know, she is not good at choosing a name for her political movement ...

@ShadowWizard Yeah. Because seeing that on my Facebook timeline manages to piss me off... Like all political posts btw. And when I get mad, I stop thinking sometimes :P

Back in the days you could simply put the waste bucket in the mailbox during the election campaign ...

@rene I guess I'm too young to remember that? I find elections as a whole confusing, I never have enough time to actually figure out what I'm voting for...
I'm mostly only voting against certain stuff, by casting my vote a certain way.
'I don't want this, I don't want that... Guess it's X for me then!'

@Tinkeringbell also I can't block everything
I often have US political posts I'm uninterested in... and can't block

8:25 AM
I've never voted in my life. I'm just as surprised as everyone else when I read in the newspaper what we're going to do next.

@rene its mandatory here ;p
If you don't vote, you lose your right to vote... Oh wait

Yeah, I praise I live in a country that doesn't have that weirdness

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, that why I suggested what I suggested ;) I can block politicians on Facebook, but I want the power to not see their posts through friends or even news media as well ;)
@rene Our system has... other downsides ;)

from all the bad systems available, I can life with this one

Hmmm... I guess it's not too bad, it just has downsides too ;)

8:31 AM
as with any system

@JourneymanGeek thanks Google Feed, everytime I check you, there's always news about US politics, and there's no way to block them ... -_-

0_0
the one on android?
Mine's oddly topical

That Trending one...
And checking my Feed option... there's one "Updates from stackapps.com" :/

@SomewhatMemorableName If only google had a feeds product that would let you pick stuff that you actually liked, and was really good
Oh wait
Google Reader.
Right! They killed that off.

@JourneymanGeek You will like and read what we tell you to. Silly users and their "preferences"

8:40 AM
@Magisch hah funny story that
I switched to TOR

Didn't twitter kill RSS? I mean, why would anyone want to use RSS when everything is already in their twitter feed?

which... kicked off all their users while they worked out how to moniterise..
@ShadowWizard ah, you are one of those people.
@ShadowWizard twitter is great for a stream of short ... tweets

I really dislike twitter

RSS kinda lets me aggregate several hundred websites and lets me read them at leasure as they update
also...
lets folks post more than 128 charecters or something

Before SE mobile apps, there's no API to get HNQ, except RSS feed.
So, thanks mobile apps!

8:44 AM
@JourneymanGeek not sure yet, I tried twitter for a bit (couple of months) but took a wrong turn and removed my account for now.... I didn't focus on news, but I think I might be satisfied with exactly this: stream of short but focused news feeds.

The dark side of Twitter. Oh wait, is there the light side?

@ShadowWizard between SE and my RSS feed reader, most of my internetty needs are met
and RSS lets me skim through headlines and in many cases see if its an article worth reading before going to the main site itself
Some media hates rss cause well, it supposedly keeps folks from their main sites but eh, you can do exerpts in your feeds

9:03 AM
<title>London Stack is Falling Down</title>
<body>Subscribe to read the news</body>

@Magisch Users that get TOS violations flags (unlicensed content, rude/vulgar/offensive contents etc) are removed daily and fast
They are protecting this guy and turning the other way only because he is a profitable source of income
morality doesn't matter

9:22 AM
@Derpy welcome to corporate america
That was a depressing monday morning meeting

9:41 AM
Aren't they always ;)?

An employee from the lab died unexpectantly over the weekend and the meeting was about how to deal with it in business terms

Agh... I hate those too. I much prefer that to not be the main concern :(

In practical terms a couple of people are now out on bereavment leave and I have to work on copying over the work related stuff from the desktop

"died unexpectantly"... is it ever expected?
Sorry to hear, @Magisch.

@ShadowWizard Certainly is not for a otherwise healthy 32 year old

9:54 AM
That is hard ...

Not as hard for the company as it is on his family, I'm sure

@Magisch I don't envy you right now. Good luck :)

@Magisch that's for sure

@Magisch whoa... sad. Heart attack, I assume?
My dad died of heart attack at age of 46.
(that was.... 32 years ago)
@Magisch he was married? Kids?

@JourneymanGeek oof... alright I guess I'll just consider myself a valuable member of the community and also constantly get reminders of that when I google long answered questions to problems I've solved myself dating from 2009 on SO :p
I have no use for mugs for cups are a superior vessel for potable liquids

10:06 AM
Plastic bottle for me, sorry...

I bought double walled "thermos" glass cups and they are fucking stellar if I may say so about a cup

@user1306322 Aren't those also freakily dangerous? Like, you never feel on the outside of the cup that your tea is still at 90 degrees and definitely not drinkable!

first of all, only a very inexperienced tea drinker makes a cup of tea with 90 degrees celsius water, and secondly you get to see the color of water and how well it has steeped so far
if a normal cup is too hot to hold, it's too hot to drink anyways, so I hate regular cups for burning your fingers like it's a normal thing
(has deep resentment for ceramic drink vessels)

[tea.se]
oh, it doesn't exist

I like my big (non-SE) mug. :) Holds a lot of tea, and has a handle big enough to not burn your fingers, while at the same time you can feel from the mug itself whether it's safe to drink, which is a good thing for an easily distracted person that usually just grabs the mug to take a sip

10:11 AM
@SomewhatMemorableName wait what
I thought I visited it
maybe it was in beta and didn't live

@Tinkeringbell E-Mug?

@user1306322 If that is yours, it does look pretty :)

it definitely is mine
I bought 4 when I saw em

10:14 AM
@Derpy Postgres mug... covered in elephants holding each other's limbs and saying 'full outer join' :P

in any case, make tea with 60-70 degree water and see how it changes from your regular preparation technique
also try using less tea if it's loose leaved
chinese reds go from very delicate floral aroma to a sweet flower nectar, to the stronger woody notes the hotter the water is

@user1306322 That 'cold'? We usually boil water and pour it onto the tea...
Then leave it to steep for 5-7 minutes

I also don't do the multi-pour tea drinking "ceremonial" approach, just the single-steep
I never boil the water, only warm it up to just enough
in ceremonies you see them heat up the clay tea pots by pouring water over it and around it, but you don't have to do that if you make it a bit hotter to compensate for the temperature loss from equalizing temperatures with the cup/mug
you can really save time and keep your lazy approach with this simple trick :p
if you haven't tried it, experiment with steeping teas with the coldest water possible (50-60 degrees) and see when it gets hot enough to not be "watery lukewarm tea-flavored water" and starts becoming tea
this is usually the optimal temp for greens like sencha and gyokuro
for reds and blacks, maybe go 10-15 degrees higher to draw the stronger flavors but not too strong to kill the delicate notes
it's a whole new tea world out there if you start from cold and warm your way up

Wow... information overflow...
I'm going to copy-paste that somewhere and in a few weeks, when I have a vacation, I'll take the time to try :) Thanks!

enjoy!

10:25 AM
@Tinkeringbell the SE mug is big ;)

this has been your [tea.se] preview, subscribe to our newsletter which we never send coz gdpr prevents us

@JourneymanGeek It's also very far away :P I've only just started this thing ;)

@Tinkeringbell true ;)
SU took me about .... 7-8 years? ;)

Pfft. I've probably lost interest in this whole thing by then, knowing me :P

@ShadowWizard afaik yes. The wife came around to tell us
Nobody knows what happened exactly and the boss chose not to try and pry.

10:38 AM
Try&Pry
don't use that key combo

@user1306322 green tea.... bags?

what bags? who said anything about bags?
did you see the metal filter spoon in my cup?
loose leaves only
packeted teas are bad
unless you've packeted them at home or those are some restaurant grade teas but then I gotta ask where you got dat money to buy it regularly
also I dare you to find pu erh in a bag

@user1306322 restaurant grade tea is actually sold by the restaurant here and not much more expensive then normal tea in the grocery store
Like 3.50 for 20 packets vs 2.50 for 20 packets or smth

well it might be just 2-3 times more expensive if you go for something like Althaus
and it's alright quality too
but I've had better luck with loose leaved teas every time

Even if its 3 times as expensive. Normal tea costs like 2.50 for 20 packets. Even 7.50 for 20 packets of tea make for a very cheap drink compared to e.g soda

10:48 AM
well, if you go purely by monetary value, you can make an argument that 1 packet of cheap tea is so fucking intense you can make ~750ml of tea from one, which is enough for 2.5 of my regular big cups
but that's insane
who makes that tea so intense

@Tinkeringbell hah, maybe?

it's like a chifir if you make it in a 150ml plastic or paper cup you can find in offices and pour 95 degrees water from the boiler
I guess it's so nobody complains that the tea is weak or watered down but yea it's not for people with taste buds

tbh I'm a major tea scrub. I boil a can of water, insert 2 packets, let it sit for 10 minutes, and retrieve my 1.5L can of tea for the day

well
water is also a super important part of making tea OR coffee
or beer
if you're into brewing

I almost exclusively drink tapwater or stuff made from tapwater
I have a machine to carbonate it for me even because that's cheaper

10:51 AM
some people filter tap water and mineralize it with mineral mix bags if you're talking about medium amounts of homebrew production
I buy artesian bottled water every 4-5 months delivered to my home
I've tried all the artesian water I could get my hands on, found the best and now that's what I get
went through about 40 different labels, so it's not an insurmountable task but took me 1.5 months to figure out the leaders and pick the top brand

I'm not a tea buff or anything, I just gulp tea instead of coffee in the office
Because coffee tastes awful

well, coffee can also be made differently
I'm not a coffee person coz real coffee makes my body hurt but I know a couple things about that too
like you should grind beans and brew them immediately
don't buy pre-ground beans
don't store ground beans as they will oxidize and ruin the flavor
you can also roast the green beans at home in an oven

The options for coffee at my office is one 4 year old tab brewing machine where you insert coffee pads and get out coffee in ~30s

there's got to be a coffee shop in every major city which sells superior quality fresh beans <2 months old from the plantations
that's the most praised source of coffee from what I've read
also if you don't service the office coffee machine you might wanna not think about it ever
coz it probably has mold in the water container or the pipes inside
every time I've checked people said "well... thanks..." and thought it was better not to know they've been drinking bog filth for years in this office
talk about why coffee tastes bad at work

most people here drink coffee to stay awake or out of habit (they get sleepy when they dont)

10:56 AM
this is also why I like tea
you have all the parts in plain sight at all times, especially if you have a glass cup
I can't argue about the effects as I've not measured them but from what I've heard the coffee gives an energy boost early in the morning and then you're wasted after 3 pm coz it's all gone by then
and tea is like a slow burner
idk
I've been drinking tea every day, at least 1 cup, on average 3-4 cups for like 15 years
and for people who have been drinking coffee for as long are probably immune to the dramatic energy release in their own way
I haven't stumbled upon any studies like that
I've found studies on metal poisoning effects and how energy storing in cells is impeded and you feel severe weakness bordering with death but nothing dramatic like that for coffee :p
but
I know some people drink hella coffee with loads of sugar and like 15 strong cups a day
I know huge portions of sugar makes your brain hurt for like an hour after intake
and I'm not sure about the effects of so many cups of strong coffee every day
but yea might be a good idea to not drink such an intense drink all day

Also consider that ~60mg of caffeine per cup * 10 cups a day makes for quite the daily caffeine intake if you maintain it for years

tea I make is pretty weak and most people find it watery, but I think it's just perfect for drawing out the flavors I like in each of my favorite sorts
sure sometimes I want a stronger cup so I make pu erh
and maybe add some condensed milk to it or a spoon of buckwheat honey
@Magisch well, I also don't know about the effects of that much caffeine
like how much it "much"?
and the fact that everyone and their mother seems to remind each other that tea actually contains more of these "caffeines/theins" than coffee, what do we really know
maybe there is not notable effect or maybe the BIG COFFEE is conspiring against us to hide the horrors so their profits don't drop :D

@JourneymanGeek Well, in the mean time I've been writing an answer, so hopefully I'll get a little closer to it today :p

but yea nestle is a fucking gigantic corporation and it has its hands in water and powder chow for babies, not exactly the beacon of righteousness
maybe such a conspiracy actually exi-

Last time I read, there's fast caffeine metabolism and slow one...

11:18 AM
yea and people are so different in their body types and digestion rates
basically you can only figure out these things for yourself by experimenting

@Tinkeringbell I think meta's the next one. And I seem to be getting rep pretty quick

if you wanna try cold brew coffee, buy a couple canned coffees and put em in the fridge
compare and tell me what you think :p

@JourneymanGeek If we keep having feedback posts on stuff, I might keep gaining rep pretty quick too ;)

I guess the next one is... "We have updated our CoC" meta post.

@user1306322 sorry, was AFK for a while

11:30 AM
I drink tea once on a given day, and I remain awake until 4:30 AM on that day.

Apaprently, GitHub Issue is the way out to avoid getting downvote when giving feedback about CoC...

@Tinkeringbell Even more if you are the first one to post. Example: I own the top-voted answer on one of Joe Friend's posts. FGITW

Prime days have started
Sadly, the Kuratas isn't on sale

11:55 AM
in SO Close Vote Reviewers on Stack Overflow Chat, 2 hours ago, by rene
I somehow assumed this day was a prime number, much like PI-day

@rene good. You focused on the prime thing and didn't ask what a Kuratas is.

Does that make me a bad flower?

@rene I always thought prime days were those days from your youth where you were in your prime?
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Meh. I wrote a very well scoring MSE answer twice, and both times I really wasn't the FGITW ;) I'm fine with not being the top answer ;)

@Tinkeringbell were? I'm still alive ... how rude ...

@rene Yeah but somehow prime days are always in the past... I'd love to know if I'm in my prime days now, because if I am, I am wasting them :P

12:10 PM
@Derpy smart strategy: make people buy things they don't need just by selling them cheap.

I don't use amazon enough to consider getting Prime ;)

heh, close enough. Not editing. :D

Hahaha that looks like you hit your head :D

you see small square-like character?
That's a Hebrew letter

With a rounded corner yeah ;) I thought as much :)

12:24 PM
@Tinkeringbell hmm? Screenshot?

Now I hope it isn't an insult ....
... doesn't look like it ...
... we're all good

I'd have had a major tantrum if I got in trouble because Shadow made me repost an insult! :P

12:40 PM
rofl
@Tinkeringbell yup that's the letter
== Beispiele == משה Moshe: Moses משיח mashíah = der Gesalbte: Messias מתושלח Metushélah: Methusalem מים mayim: Wasser == Zeichenkodierung == == Weblinks… ==

Oh weird. So the letter changes depending on whether it's at the end of a word or not?
In the examples it seems like it's the first letter that changes?

@Tinkeringbell yeah, but not all letters. We got only 5 of those.

evil plot of the day: convincing some unknowingly victim into playing Darkest Dungeon

> Allowing a hero to reach an extremely high stress level can cause them to have a heart attack, bringing them to the brink of death if not immediately tended to.
What a nice game. :D
@Tinkeringbell first of what?

12:56 PM
@ShadowWizard First letter of the word? Or my German is messed up, but I think I'm reading that the shape of the letter changes if it's the last letter... yet on the examples, for water, it's the first letter that actually has the changed shape...
