12:09 AM
I'll admit...for a very long time I've kind of been dissatisfied with the overall leadership of Stack Exchange.

12:28 AM
Apparently that's it.

I mean, I have specific issues. I voice them out sometimes. Sometimes I don't. But if you're unhappy with a place, you can either work out how to be a force for change, or... well find somewhere that works for you.

The "for a long time/been" sort of implies that something's changed?

which I guess is good? I donno

Well, I could be over-reading the tenses...

so... "And?" ? ;p

12:34 AM
You forgot to ping him... duh. :P

oh. @SonictheInclusiveHedgehog ^

12:52 AM
@JourneymanGeek Don't forget there's a 15-minute delay between you pinging me and my getting an inbox notification

That's fine

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog That's your choice... that's actually a setting you can change. :)

Its not like its urgent or anything, especially on asynchronous chat

@Catija I prefer to set it this way

I'm happy having chats spread out over several days (which is where I prefer replies)

12:53 AM
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I wasn't implying otherwise... not everyone's aware of it, though.

Even if you're in the chat room, if you don't send a message or click the circle, you get a notification...anyway...
I find that the team is mostly engaged in doing things their own way and has increasingly shut out the community's wishes more and more.

Example?

For instance, intentionally omitting mention to the arbitration clause in their Terms of Service email and then not responding to questions asking about why it was omitted.

1:10 AM
I, for one, have been for a very long time kinda dissatisfied with the overall weather

Of the planet?

@Shadow Never mind, Robert Cartaino used his Master Emerald

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog "Intentionally"? The now-bountied question about that hasn't been answered... sure... but I haven't seen any indication that it was intentional or if it was, that that intention was somehow nefarious.

I'm dissatisfied with the lower-and-lower response rate from the team on requests...a side reason why I wrote the post on how to get attention was to sort of get the team to understand that there are people waiting for responses
@Catija Given that there was much consternation and two featured posts about it after receiving criticism about it, it's pretty blatant it was an intentional omission. If it was unintentional, the team would have responded quickly, and there would have been no bounty.

1:27 AM
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog ... from what I've seen on MSE and MSO, Shog and others have been much more frequently marking stuff as either completed or by design over the last month or so... I see 4-5 old requests getting addressed every week at minimum and that's just what I'm noticing, personally...
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog That's... um... pretty unkind to say. The members of the team who've been dealing with these issues... by which I mean Tim... seem to have been extremely active and responsive when possible. It seems like their hands are tied a lot by the legal stuff that they're worried about addressing incorrectly, so they've been very measured in their responses to avoid giving out bad information that may get them in trouble... they've clearly had several mix-ups with the opt-out info...
So I can understand wanting to get all of their ducks in a row before pressing forward and putting more confusion into the mix.

1:57 AM
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog quite literally... these are newer problems.
and well, its a big network, and most folk probably would find local laws confusing, let alone complex, multi-jurisdictional issues.
(I mean, I have a slightly better background in law than most non lawyer type, and most law classes left me with massive headaches)
And until recently... well, these things weren't issues.
Traditionally, SE's revenue was advertising and jobs based. With enterprise, you probably could get the client's legal team and your legal team talking or at least have a mostly standard contract for that service.

ugh political morning

@SomewhatMemorableName hah. We have a Trump/Kim Summit in a week

@JourneymanGeek And with Enterprise, it's being hosted on their own servers, so they've got their own security policy acting on it... Teams is a whole separate issue since companies need the standard practices of the Teams people to somehow jive with their own security expectations... which are extremely varied.

Yup! So... teams literally is random folks who're willing to pay a small fee, running their stuff on SE's infrascture...
@Catija I think some Enterprise is SAAS, but on SE managed systems

And hoping that everything goes right and that SE has a reasonable security policy in place.
... and they don't (or at least didn't) even have a head of IS.

2:04 AM
hence them needing Azure sysadmins, and nick complaining about MS's rather painful licencing systems ;)

Sentosa Island... looks like they will have an emotional roller coaster :S

@Catija slightly surprised that hasn't happened yet, but ugh, timing?
@SomewhatMemorableName actually, not a bad place for it

Well, the job posting is down, so either they've hired someone and haven't announced it or they're still interviewing but have all the candidates they need.
Oh... and the CM posting is gone, too... :/

@Catija oh, they didn't get back to you?

They did. I'm sort of waiting.

2:06 AM
ah, good luck then!
(I'm not in the running)

:) Eh, I know who you're rooting for, so it's OK. :P

lol. Whoever gets it will likely be an excellent choise
(and out of my way the next time they hire XD)

HAHAHAHA

eh, totally how I got my moderator position ;)

Being patient works sometimes. :) Depends on if some new upstart comes in and steals it out from under you or not, though. ;)

2:08 AM
Well, I don't think I'll keep trying forever.
I don't think I'd ever apply for a job more than 3 times, no matter how fantastic it is

Seems reasonable. Andy keeps applying to be an astronaut, though. It's cute.

and heh, I probably would be in for a huge load of drama at once (not that I'm not) - my parents think my current job is awesome...
(Since its for the government)

Even with the horrid hours?

Its for the government ;)

Meh.

2:11 AM
Well, I can probably stay on as long as I want

I guess if you can turn it into a better, permanent position, that'd be great...
Oh? That's not too bad if the pay is good.

pay is... alright?
PRETTY sure I can get something better once I sort out my vaguely sketchy job history ;)

Too many jobs in too short of a period of time?

kinda.
and never anywhere very long

Surely them being specifically temp jobs is a reasonable explanation, though?

2:13 AM
eh
One was a company closing down. One was me quitting.
and HR won't really see that when they see your resume.

Yeah, I guess you don't exactly put "reasons for leaving" on a resume the way you would on an application form.

... at least, here in the states... whenever I've applied for retail jobs you fill in a form that includes a space for why you left.

well, in this one, I'd worked with the company before

Actually, I think even UT has you fill that out.

2:17 AM
not quite how it works here?
its almost entirely resume driven

Yeah, the US/State governments will often have you fill out more standardized "application" forms to gather more info than you might put in a resume... they even specifically collect month/year of employment to see any gaps and get explanations for them.

an
In theory. here they're supposed to balance the needs of the workers and employers with the government as a stakeholder. In practice...
ehhh.
I've not had a good experience with the agencies supposed to help
also... speaking of insane hours...

Huh... that sounds really complex.

there's a few good points.
1) I only work 2-3 days a week
2) only 2 or 3 days is crazy overnight work
though 12 hour shifts are a bit...
on the other hand, this location has slightly better pay + as I said, I need the nice solid block of work on the resume to get out of here

Yeah... but you also said getting there is a bit of a pain.
And the internet connectivity is spotty.

2:24 AM
1.5 hours by public transport
eh. and I exceeded my traffic
so I got a 8 dollar a month unlimited connection with throttled speeds.... which works about as well as my regular connection
I actually think its my specific office. It works fine at the bus stop
Well, its what I got, and night shifts are quiet unless all hell breaks loose so...

HAHAHA... unless. :P

Worst Case Scenario - Things break on a weekend
there's no helpdesk
and there's specific folks in the other site...

@JourneymanGeek this is always the worst case scenario

@Catija oh. ya. Bit of a twist in the other thing going on
I'll tell you in TL

Ugh, honestly I'm annoyed with the Travel HNQ about Samsung's Burgundy ad. While it's good that the OP has shown effort(?), it's so misdirected that it's not even in Burgundy, France.

to be fair, the whole arbitration/ToS/GDPR thing has been handled pretty horrendously, from the start to the end. Notice that this doesn't really mean I am trying to attribute any specific responsibility to anyone.
The staff members we know seems to have their hand pretty tied up, and there are some suspicious comments that seems to indicate some of them are very frustrated with the free bad rep they got thanks to this and the situation they were casted into (cough cough Tom cough cough)
That said, having followed the whole process very closely, I can say I also get why some users are pretty annoyed by how the process was handled.
From omitted details in mails, staff comments along the lines of "I know this is bad but I can't comment", the "it is not up to us to explain the ToS or how it integrates with conflicting 'local' laws" thing, conflicting requirements (see the whole "not sure the opt out mails that didn't specify a name count) and so on... I can totally understand why some users think this has indeed been handled very poorly.

@Derpy Did you typo Tim, or there's another victim?

typo yep
thanks for noticing
wait... I am still in time to claim I did that on purpose to protect his identity? ^_^'

I'll accept that, yes.

Post. Tom Post.
@Derpy maybe it's all due to the management not understanding this whole arbitration/ToS/GDPR thing themselves? It's utterly complicated legal stuff, I doubt there are many people who really understand what it all means and how it should work.
They can hire bunch of legal advisers, but guess it cost millions.

So, do we have a specific example of a company having done their GDPR-stuff right?

SE?

actually, it's offensive. Good.
offensive language used ^
@Mithrandir according to @Derpy, no.
@JohnDvorak maybe the company who defined the GDPR.
not sure though.

@ShadowWizard to be fair, it's not like I am the only one thinking that.
and as I said before....

Yeah... as a government agency they have absolutely no reason to collect PII, so they simply didn't. Right. /s

yep, @sumelic, most of us probably know that. The problem is that most of us also seem to agree that this had to be "looked into" BEFORE it went live. — SPArchaeologist May 24 at 8:15

@Magisch well there's also the possibility, that well, he also needs to talk to other parts of the company before answering, and there's a certain degree of lag...

@Derpy I stopped watching after the fourth season realistically because it wasn't as good after Lauren Faust left

@Mgetz to be fair, s04 finale could be safely used as a "last episode" since it does indeed feel like the closure of a story.
with that, I don't mean that anything after that is bad.
Just that plot wise they seem to have lost a defined direction.

@Derpy yeah... and it feels baaaaad

again, the single episodes aren't bad. The problem if anything is that there is a lost focus in the premieres / finales.
which culminated in season 7 finale.

back on topic, season 7 finale was the most weird piece in the puzzle so far.

@ShadowWizard GDPR, you can't disclose the last activity date without consents.

@Derpy nah.... that's too much even for SE. :D
I still believe they might remove location, if they didn't already though.

After all, some locations are "sensitive" and might attract bad behavior from people, not related to GDPR.

@Derpy depends on if activity date is central to operations. I'd say it's not for SE as they don't hoover users IIRC

@SomewhatMemorableName It is a bed time story now.
> For reasons unknown — perhaps Jefferson couldn’t make it to the end without dozing off — Calm has declined to include the entirety of the 209-page document in Once Upon a GDPR.
Instead, the announcer says he hopes to offer “a taste of it by reading a lengthy extract from the 107-page introduction, and then, if you’re still awake, one or two of the more relaxing articles that make up the real heart of the document.” The entire recording lasts 40 minutes, by which time you should be well and truly conked.

1:03 PM
about 5 hours ago, I had 3 downvotes on questions on SO in short succession, and I'm not sure if I was the victim of serial downvoting
Like, just 3 questions downvoted, all 3 within a similar timespan

@Nzall nothing new. Some time ago, someone apparently downvoted all posts in questions tagged [my-little-pony] on Sci-Fi&Fantasy

@Derpy I assume that if it's really part of serial downvoting, it'll be reverted in like 12 hours?

@Nzall Looks like it, happened in 9 seconds on 7:28:33Z - 7:28:42Z
Probably won't be reverted since it's only 3

Yeah, because the questions aren't really related, nor are they particularly bad

@Nzall yep, except for the part "serial downvoting != detected serial downvoting"

1:09 PM
Thought as much. Flag for moderator intervention and state "probably serial downvoting"?

and obviously only the detected variant is reverse

This is a pattern like hundreds a week that do the same thing. It's just someone that got cross at you for one reason or another and decided to exact revenge in the most petty way possible
I wouldn't bother for only 3
Even when a moderator confirms the suspicion they have to alert a staff member which further needs to confirm the suspicion and then needs to revert the vote.

so in effect, it's "don't bother mentioning it, because it's not worth the trouble"? Kinda stupid since it costs me 6 rep

6 rep is less then a single answer upvote
You don't want to know how many of these happen every week

1:14 PM
I feel like if it really happens hundreds of times per week without intervention, it's a systemic issue where people have found a way to skirt the rules without outright breaking them, which doesn't seem like a good thing

I tried to go after serial voting on a systemic level before
It's ... not a fruitful endeavour for a user

@Nzall I've had someone serially downvote me over the course of a week or two so it wouldn't trigger the detection it happens

@Magisch You made quite an impact.

not for the better, mind you

@Magisch I had in cases like that 2 votes reversed by the script.
so 1 downvote remained

1:17 PM
@Magisch I disagree

@rene could be that it's more sensitive for downvotes
Because for upvotes lord knows 3 isn't enough to trip anything

@Mgetz Okay, I'll give it a couple of days, see if it's really someone trying to avoid the downvoting rules. If it happens again a couple times, I'll call in moderator intervention. but yeah, 6 rep isn't really worth calling the authorities over

@Magisch possible and that sounds reasonable

@Nzall The main issue is you have to prove the votes are A) the same user B) serial and directed. Which is a royal pain

@Mgetz more or less the only folks who can do that in many cases is a CM

1:19 PM
You don't need to prove anything. You just need a reasonable suspicion. A CM can outright see who voted for whom

serial down votes makes me to go answer some more questions, to "compensate" for the loss. It is awesome if you win that race ...

@Magisch yeah but at least in my case I could show they had DV'd other people and that broke the 'serial downvote' algorithm even though they were DVing posts they had no other interaction with. It wasn't worth my time to even try to raise it to a CM at that point.

;)
@rene or ... you stop caring about rep

serial voting in general is not a priority at stack

@Magisch Generally, 3 downvotes within 9 seconds doesn't really seem like it could be 3 different users, but I might be wrong there

1:22 PM
unless you complain yourself, nobody gets caught and nothing happens unless it's blatant enough for the script

@JourneymanGeek NO! Never! Don't touch my rep! It is mine, I want it all ...

@JourneymanGeek I'll stop caring about rep once I reach 10K so I can see deleted questions

@Nzall hah, that is kind of my motivation for getting 10k on MSE...
then I realised I answered that question and at some point... I could see it anyway

@JourneymanGeek I'm almost there on Arqade. Only 45 rep left

Goes down voting ... hmm, do I even have an account there ...

1:25 PM
@Mithrandir I spent a hundred hours or so burning through several hundreds of hours of mod time and a substantial amount of CM time to mildly inconvenience some people who were just a touch too unsubtle for the script
wouldn't call that a win in any book

and gone
