Q: Since when did SE stop uploading DMCA takedown notices to Lumen Database?

Sonic the Inclusive HedgehogThere was an answer that was removed from Stack Overflow due to a DMCA takedown notice. According to the comments there, the complaint was not published to Lumen Database (formerly called Chilling Effects), despite the fact that since 2013, SE has uploaded such notices. Also, it appears that ther...

@rene ^^
"when the lumen database stopped accepting them"
I'll let someone else tell that story, but apparently yes.
@Shog9 Can you leave a "short answer" comment, then?
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog sorry, no
12:27 AM
So who will answer?
I just wrote something like 700 words for you here, and that's gonna be about it for me today
Gonna go move a big pile of dirt
Is this the case?

WARNING!!! WARNING!!! Shog approaching daily word limit... Aooooogah Aooogah! Shut down in 200 words.
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog badgering people for answers is not cool :(
You did mention you wanted to be told when your behaviour is annoying right? This is annoying?
Lemme rephrase
12:34 AM
Did he say he was annoyed?
I'm annoyed. I'm saying its annoying.
This might annoy you, but our conversation is our conversation.
Anyway, the CM team takes care of the the whole network. 'Its his job' kinda dosen't cover getting pinged by specific users a lot over stuff that's not urgent.
Are you annoyed by someone else's conversation, or would you have been were the conversation with you?
I mean, as a mod, it probably would take a suicide threat or an ongoing troll issue for me to ping a CM
@JohnDvorak well, I'm not a CM ;p
and if I were I'd totally at some point point him, a little more politely than I am now, at the proper channels
12:36 AM
If only I were an employee, then I could go look in the code as much as I wanted, without needing to ask another employee.
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog brush up on those coding and social skills and apply the next time a opening comes up ;)
Or I could just follow Tim Post's advice and email the team for every unresolved request
which is ok. It'll get thrown into the queue and handled when appropriate
cause that's literally what I do.
(also, yay for the new, apparently unified support email. I don't need to go "hey guys, which one was it again?")
That's why automatic email filtering / forwarding exists
All of this would have been avoided with a little patience.
12:47 AM
@Catija :( That's kind of the big picture thing.
@JohnDvorak bit of a story there XD. But I don't really use that much
I think maybe 2-3x times a year
and more often than not with big issues I'd like the powers that be to know about.
But I can never remember, and use the contact form most of the time.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Have you tested with a couple?
@Catija I tested with a very recently posted one
Which had one upvote
4:06 AM
Well, I made some good progress. Dug up two drain lines for rain gutters, found a leak in one and a hole followed by about 12ft of tree roots in the other. Mapped contour lines for the side hill and dug trenches for new drain lines - these'll be perforated to allow water to seep into the soil.
Sort of like French drains?
Yeah, but in reverse
The old drain line just dumped water onto the hillside. Over time it washed a lot of soil away, and then got clogged by dirt and roots. When the drought hit, the shrubs started dying; nothing to hold onto water, no fresh supply.
Ah, so more of a reservoir that will gradually release water that's been stored.
I'm gonna try & set this up to both capture runoff (swales) and inject rainwater from the roof. Reduce erosion and get rid of a lot of dead wood laying around.
...then plant new shrubs
(this is also where the wood chipper comes into play)
Oh, nice. Do you have a lot of paving that has runoff or is the ground so hard (rock?) that you have to capture it?
... that makes more sense now. People don't generally need wood chippers.
4:13 AM
I'm on a steep hillside, and it's mostly packed sand or very poor soil
Below that, shale clay
Not... Great
Sounds like ... a recipe for landslides if you're not careful.
@Catija I need one maybe one day every two years. This was just cheaper than renting one :-/
You just have to store it, now... hope you have a big shed.
Building a shed is another project I need to get to one of these years
Maybe you could rent it out on one of those "rent your stuff" sites... I think one is called loanables?
4:16 AM
assuming you live somewhere dense enough? ;p
But heck... Even if I give it away or let it rust in the yard, still cheaper than renting
@Shog9 ... or put it to other uses? ;p
And you have something to fiddle with... assuming you enjoy that sort of thing.
(or rent it out, if its worth the effort)
People chipping?
4:17 AM
@Catija I totally did not say that ;)
I rented a pop-up tent once.
hah. My experience of camping was military...
tent's too short, so you could either sleep with your head or feet sticking out...
Oh, no... a 10x10 shade tent... like for a picnic.
Oh!
thoooose
4:19 AM
oh ok
;p
I think I've seen those somewhere
pretty cheap, something like a 100 quid?
They're pretty much ubiquitous here... We own one now. Use it in the back yard for over Bennett's inflatable pool.
granted, it would just take up space...
(unless our roof leaked? ;p)
Ya, they're a thing in india, though usually rented for events.
They're pretty compact... about 10 inches square and 4 feet long... and the case is on wheels.
We live in an apartment ;p
I don't remember how much ours was... $80 maybe?
4:21 AM
(also... lots of accumilated stuff)
sounds about right with exchange rates
Yeah, we have a house with a garage... though if we do this renovation, we'll lose about 1/3 of the space before we double it.
ya.
When we fixed this place up the last time, we did half then half ;p
buuuut...
We had a lot less stuff then
We may have to get a storage unit to house it all.
hah. We had one when dad's company closed down ._.
Guess who got to shred documents?
Oooh, fun!
4:24 AM
errr
at first
We really should have just gone with fire in a hell money burner
so...
The industrial ones are more fun... throw everything in the hopper and push start.
we cheaped out and bought a fairly regular shredder...
has a 5 minute cycle before it overheats
and can only take something like 5 pages
Ouch. That sounds time consuming.
and needs to cool down if it overheats
They have companies here where you can take stuff and they'll shred it for you... assuming you trust them. I'm not sure if you can watch or not.
4:25 AM
so... its shred shred shed... wander off shred shred... oh snap....
naw, dad didn't want to spend the money XD
If I knew what I knew now?
Well, you had to buy the shredder, right?
yup

As well as an extremely sexist life skills book from 1955
hmm
COmpletely useless in this situation
6:31 AM
@Catija Well, I said a 100 vote post versus 10 votes, so by extension lets examine 40 votes versus 4 100 vote posts. Can you image what this would look like after one week? 28 100 upvoted posts. Now that is content contribution! 280 votes on posts reviewed from somewhere, sprinkled about... yeah, voting is important but that isn't going to create high quality content all by itself. I strongly disagree with your observation, and still believe there was a misunderstanding in implementation.
I tend to agree with her too. It took me a much longer time to badge-run the Sportsmanship badge than it did to make a single post (that got votes from others over time).
@JourneymanGeek nowadays, people goes to Duolingo, Rosetta Stone, etc... or anything mobile..
I think it's good enough... for basic learning

@SomewhatMemorableName lol. There's a bit of background to why french. If things work out... It will be useful
@JourneymanGeek oooh, business-level French, or conversational French?
Conversational
I think I can get myself back to toddler level french quickly

Welp, I'm weak at languages that has... specialized pronunciation: Chinese, French...
Actually that's the clever thing with the CDs I have. They build french off English
@JourneymanGeek that would be better then I have ever reached and I did had French class for two years in high school
I wasn't good at it, at all
@rene I can understand non native french speakers in movies. Can't understand native speakers
It's been a while tho
My French teacher actually advised me to drop it
7:11 AM
@JourneymanGeek He was supportive and helping me out making the right choices. I visited him regularly despite him not being involved in my future education. He was inspirational in that sense.
Ah
Lol. I am only picking it up again if certain events happen :p
Like the French re-capturing Singapore?
Erm. Not in any sense of those words
Here in California you have to take two years of a foreign language to qualify for entrance into state universities.
To fulfill my back then burning desire to become a journalist it was mandatory to have graduated with two foreign languages. With French gone I had English and German left
7:19 AM

@rene Is your school Dutch-medium or English-medium?
Dutch (and I'm no longer in school, I'm reciting from decaying memory)
Also, which of the six different levels here (1-5 and N) are you?
@rene I know that.
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog level 1 I think?

@rene it's hard to imagine a flower catching jokes though..
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I would rather under estimate my abilities and for the people interacting with me it feels better if they don't assume I make sense, on any level ...

Yup and well.... Lots of people use chat on limited connections
@SomewhatMemorableName yeah but SE is using their API which is limited
So the 2mb limit is ok other than us needing to resize first
8:30 AM
I just resize to make it smaller in case it's too big.
@ShadowWizard just saying an alternative for.... Commons.... (out of all photo storage sites, why Commons?)
@SomewhatMemorableName totally agree
Not familiar with commons to be honest. (as a global image host)

11:39 AM
lol
@TravisJ is that an actual relationship made somewhere or did you just pull those numbers out because they look good to you?
@SomewhatMemorableName kaboom
It's pretty much impossible to get 4,100 votes in a day on meta. Using 40 is much easier... obviously... it's really unfair to specifically choose numbers that do what you want but are arbitrary.
Didn't want to ask before, but I ask now... what does " 4 100" mean? Is it 4100 as in four thousand and one hundred? Is it 4.1? Never saw such number formatting. @Travis
(I did see 4,100 used)
Using space for this is terribly confusing, IMO.
Oh, he must mean 4 - 100 (quantity 4, score 100).
Still seems arbitrary.
12:01 PM
@TravisJ voting is active, getting upvotes (or downvotes) is passive. The participation tab measures activity, i.e. things you actively do. So it's correct.
Quantity 100, score 0
One can spend less than a minute writing answer (or question) that get 100 daily upvotes. They didn't really participate that much. On the other hand voting 100 times is hard and requires thought and time. (Assuming fair voting)
Somewhere in the middle probably a post ban
@SomewhatMemorableName no idea what it means, to be honest. /cc @Catija you also used those words.
Not native English speaker, and not familiar with high math in English, so...
I know 4.1 which is (4 + 0.1) for example. That's what you mean, somehow?
Better to interpret as "four 100-score posts"?
12:05 PM
ohh, Travis tried to use less words. hehe, like the acronyms people use all the time. Oh well.
@SomewhatMemorableName yes, much better. It actually let the reader know what you mean.
One can write in some code language, it's their right, but only few will understand.

spaces as thousand separators is used in most of Europe. It's not our fault that 'Muricans don't recognize anything other than what they themselves use.
Travis probably meant 4x100 though
Heck, even French Canada uses spaces
Heck, even SI prefers spaces. It's a standard, guys. Learn it.
@JohnDvorak never seen it before, and using many things from Europe culture, so it's weird.
resisting standards
becoming IE
expires
speaking of SI, don't pluralize unit abbreviations. The SI standard doesn't allow that. kms are Kilometer-seconds, not kilometers.
I don't like teh spaces as thousand separators - space is overloaded enough in text as it is.
Commas are ambiguous, though, unless you also include the decimal separator.
Switzerland uses apostrophes, but they're alone in doing so.
We could switch to underscores. The entire C family of languages uses underscore.
I would love this: 4♥300♥500
Global. Can't be mistaken.

can be fixed with some special keyboard, for sure. ;)

Also it's just ALT+num 3
you mean ALT+FN+L?
12:42 PM
Spaces are overrated. Let's embrace Java's _

Another option would be to just save up space and leave out any thousand separators. The only downside is a little more room for some unclean practices in marketing.
Just as I said...

@JohnDvorak Doesn't appear to be in the ISO catalog, please stop your cultural imperialism
what
Even "imperialism" is wrong given that we are a union of republics, not an empire.
@JohnDvorak Imperialism takes many forms, all that is apparently required is suppression of some group or something... I'm bad at this whole 'revolutionary' thing
;p
... says a member of a country that's essentially a rebel group that detached itself from an empire, then ruined a freight ship's worth of their favorite drink just to ... burn bridges. ;-P
@JohnDvorak You'd have had enough of mercantilism too, if you literally weren't allowed to make a shovel either.

reference for the "shovel" part?
In American Colonial history, the Iron Act, short-titled the Importation, etc. Act 1750, (Statute 23 Geo. II c. 29) was one of the legislative measures introduced by the British Parliament, within its system of Trade and Navigation Acts. The Act sought to increase the importation of pig and bar iron from its American colonies and to prevent the building of iron-related production facilities within these colonies, particularly in North America where these raw materials were identified. The dual purpose of the act was to increase manufacturing capacity within Great Britain itself, and to limi...
Interesting, thanks
But yeah in the colonies you had to use a wooden shovel... it was not widely followed because enforcement officers knew they would have an "unfortunate accident" in the woods on the way back to town
:D
You mean, axe-ident?
@JohnDvorak more like hatchet but that's nitpicking, they might have used bows too to make it look like a native attack... because racism was a thing then too
12:57 PM
Judging the GDPR success, Europe can force that space separator as well on the rest of the world.
Anyone not using spaces to separate thousands will be banned.
GDPR, net neutrality... pick your poison.
@ShadowWizard If that dumb copyright law passes they may not have to worry about it
@Mgetz why? It will only wipe out the internet... books will remain... ;)
I don't particularly care that Americans use spaces, as long as they can read them without whining about multiculturalism :P
12:59 PM
@JohnDvorak Better yet lets make a <number> element in HTML that auto formats it for us!
... or homebrew it with jQuery
We should also have an HTML element that converts feet and yards into normal units.
or rather, back
@JohnDvorak we have ISO standards for that ironically
feet and yards?
yeah the funny thing is all the US funny units are actually defined in terms of SI units
@JohnDvorak yeeeeep
1:02 PM
have to be for international trade, just like they serve 'pints' in the UK that are actually defined in ML
Even Fahrenheit?
Fahrenheit is different because it's dependent on a material, but the conditions for the scale are in SI IIRC
tbf I find Fahrenheit more useful than Centigrade due to the finer gradations on the scale. But that could easily be handled by just adding tenths to thermostats that support it but nobody does.
There is a MUCH bigger gap between 24 and 25C than 74 and 75 F

Medical thermometers use celsius with one decimal place. For weather thermometers, we look where the needle points between two markings.
At least time units are global.
French tried to ruin that, too
and failed, unfortunately
Decimal time is the representation of the time of day using units which are decimally related. This term is often used specifically to refer to French Revolutionary Time, used in France for a few years beginning in 1792 during the French Revolution, which divided the day into 10 decimal hours, each decimal hour into 100 decimal minutes and each decimal minute into 100 decimal seconds, as opposed to the more familiar UTC Time standard, which divides the day into 24 hours, each hour into 60 minutes and each minute into 60 seconds. The main advantage of a decimal time system is that, since the base...

A horse length, or simply length, is a unit of measurement for the length of a horse from nose to tail, approximately 8 feet (2.4 m). == Use in horse racing == The length is commonly used in Thoroughbred horse racing, where it describes the distance between horses in a race. Horses may be described as winning by several lengths, as in the notable example of Secretariat, who won the Belmont Stakes by 31 lengths (248 feet (76 m)). More often, winning distances are merely a fraction of a length, such as half a length. In British horse racing the distances between horses are calculated by converting...

A furlong is a measure of distance in imperial units and U.S. customary units equal to one eighth of a mile, equivalent to 660 feet, 220 yards, 40 rods, or 10 chains. Using the international definition of the inch as exactly 25.4 millimetres, one furlong is 201.168 metres. However, the United States does not uniformly use this conversion ratio. Older ratios are in use for surveying purposes in some states, leading to variations in the length of the furlong of two parts per million, or about 0.4 millimetres (1⁄64 inch). This variation is too small to have practical consequences in most applications...
