Q: Is this ageism or acceptable humour?

Jack DouglasA recent question on the site, which otherwise uncontroversial, on-topic and interesting (and which has already got two in-depth answers), starts off with an attempt at humour which has resulted in a rollback war: I work with a really old DBA who says a lot of weird stuff. Dude has an O'Reill...

> For example, if we had an sexist ageist anti-jew slur that targeted those loving in Australia, "That bloody ancient dreidel-spinning tallywacker can't even write a SELECT."
Would become after the neural network was trained, "That neckbeard can't even write a SELECT."

user194636
chat markdown eh

user194636
6:12 PM
gotta love it

I love "dreidel-spinning tallywacker"

user315433
Markdown is okay, not having it in multi-line messages, though...

user315433
I like the typo in "loving in Australia"

I would say watch out even if you paste from the main site, from what I seen some word can get you direct banned in chat, not on the main site

user194636
Evan Carroll is a lot of fun.

For certain values of "fun".

user315433
@yagmoth555 I'm not particularly concerned about that now...

The lack of margin (on mobile) is annoying though.

There's no margin for error when it comes to deleting accounts. That's pretty intentional.

user315433
Especially when doing it yesterday.

The queue is backed up or something.

oh ok

user315433
So, what non-welcoming thing should I say to speed up the process?

Getting a chat ban doesn't actually speed up deletion
also, I believe you meant "unwelcoming"

user315433
@JohnDvorak According to our new boss being not-welcoming is a reason for deletion.

user315433
When Wensel says jump, SE "leadership" asks how high.

Let's make no more mention of her, please

Gawd, it's like I'm a curse
Whenever I open the tab, the discussion is about her, but transcript of previous hours about something else

user194636
At least we now know who to blame

!!/blame

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ It's hey's fault.

I knew it! That sneaky bast@rd
Secretly a Palpatine
Palpatine is the head of the good guys who's actually the head of the bad guys, right?
This stuff only seems less ridiculous in context

Q: There seems to be a flock of people who's mission is to close questions

kpieI understand that we need to keep things clean and not have a bunch of repeat questions but people seem like all they want to do is close a question when there really are good opportunities for discussion. Here is an example. I'm the only person actually trying to talk about the question and ...

CV birdies. @rene is secretly a cute pigeon
Or dove

user194636

@bjb568 no cat business in this chat
These birds are NOT edible

:o
:O

Now that I think about it, SOCVR does seem like a flock of pigeons (or doves if you're a dove person) that seem confused about seeds on the ground, but really, they're maximizing seed consumption efficacy
@bjb568 how many did you eat?
Tell the truth

I do dove me some bread every once in a while

@JohnDvorak how many degrees can your head turn? Just checking how owl you are

6:54 PM
450

@JohnDvorak it'd probably do
Less than 720 are impure though
You look suspiciously from a human background

I thought I'd get an earworm, but thankfully not after the second half... and now I don't want to sleep ._.

Speaking of which, I reworked my high-speed low-drag review webapp, so that the most closable questions are near the top.

user315433
Opening it at a random moment of the day pretty much guarantees 10-20 closevotes will be spent.

user315433
Three times, at the intervals of 1 hour or more (to get fresh questions; it looks at the 200 newest) => done with 50 CVs for the day.

PSA: avoid typing "Meta.SO" on Twitter: it becomes a link to meta.SO which on top of that attaches someone's mugshot to the tweet.

Q: How can Stack Overflow be more welcoming?

user4734199I have been on Stack Overflow for a little over a year now, and while I've had many of my questions resolved by kind and well-meaning people, I for some reason have never totally felt welcome here. The "why" of that is something I can't quite put my finger on (and that's honestly too subjective ...

Wait a second, does this have something to do with the recent Avengers: Meta Wars movie?
I mean, was that removed user not just a random person from the internet?

user315433
All this need to be welcomed.

user315433
Can't people just go visit their family or friends when they have that need?

user315433
Stack Overflow is neither.

Not "Oh sorry, you can tell us what we can or can't talk about". It's unacceptable to dictate what people can talk about. It's just pure bigotry and I can't in all my heart support it. That said, we can make an effort not to offend, but it can't be mandatory not to offend or to pamper to unreasonable requests. Obvious trolls get more support from SE than useful contributors, and this is what is making this place unwelcoming. — Sklivvz 9 hours ago

user315433
And Tim, we both know perfectly well that it is true. We talked about it many times, I gave you tons of examples. Mods get insulted by trolls on twitter about their SE work? We don't do anything here. Why? And this is a perfect example of someone putting up an incredible shitstorm to be "right" in a stupid, irrelevant, idiotic chat conversation which was not problematic. — Sklivvz 9 hours ago
