Why is it so cold???

@Catija What's cold?
Outside?

2:48 AM
Yes... and in my house...

(Yes, I just had to venture outside, and I quickly walked back in to take cetirizine and my coat.)

user315433
It's snowing here.

... so... "cold" in this sense is relative... it was in the 80s yesterday and it's in the 40s now.
And it's April, so it's not OK.

@Catija It's freezing by San Diego's standards (we consider 50s as very cold)
Austin's weather is capricious.

Crap, it's going to be 39 tonight? My tomato plants ... aren't going to like it... but I don't know what to do about it. I think it's too late to cover them since it's already cold.
Apparently, it's currently as cold as it's going to get and will actually start warming up over the next few hours. :/
That's so backwards.

2:51 AM
Me and cold air just don't mix. Whenever I breathe cold air, my nose runs. A coat does not fix it. Cetirizine helps, but doesn't really take effect until one hour later.

Q: Feature Request: Mentors

klenwellThis request is prompted by part of the discussion on this recent Hacker News thread: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16773182 In particular, this sub-thread here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16773806 The idea would be that new users could request a mentor to personally help...

user315433
Taking ideas from Hacker News is dangerous.

Do your heaters even work? I remember one of the dorms (off campus) have a system that has to be switched between heating and cooling and there was a really cold day after they switched to cooling and they got a lot of complaints but there wasn't much they could do since they'd turned off the furnace.
@SFTP Didn't they do that already?

@Catija Yes, they do. They "don't" have thermostats, but I found one underneath the panel above the intake.

> Blossom drop will occur in the spring if daytime temperatures are warm but night temps drop below 55 F.
Poop.
So many little flowers are going to die.

2:56 AM
@Catija What triggers your allergies here, if any?
For me, it's cold air, dust mites, and (lo and behold) cats.

@SonicWizard I don't pay enough attention to what allergens are around to know, really... and I'm going to assume that the allergies aren't that bad, since I don't really ever take meds for them.

@Catija Here I'm fine on most days, only a few times do I need to take cetirizine. In India, however, it can be a nightmare if I miss it.

Bets on which answer on this post is going to get the bounty: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/2950/…

FYI if someone complains about not being able to award existing answers immediately, I'd tell them to wait the full seven days before awarding, so that the answer can receive more upvotes due to the added attention.

It's a CW... so I'm not sure why that matters.

3:04 AM
@Catija In general...this is a special case
This stems from an actual case on Stack Overflow, where a bountier decided to wait the full seven days before awarding me a bounty on my existing answer

Yeah, well, that's great until they decide to wait so long that you never get the bounty at all or only get half. I've rarely benefited from upvotes due to a bounty on a question I've answered.

@Catija Users are notified 3 days in advance, 1 day in advance, and then when the grace period starts.
@Catija For me, my bounty ended up being doubled due to the upvotes I received
But Stack Overflow's massive

Can 10k+ users see deleted comments on non-deleted posts, or comments on deleted posts that were deleted separately?

No
Only mods can see deleted comments and we have to click a button to reveal them.

Why are mods restricted from undeleting comments that were voluntarily deleted? Can SE employees undelete them?

No clue. We also can't undelete comments that were deleted by flags.
Generally, the concept is, comments are temporary, if the OP doesn't want it there any more, there's no need to override that.
If you really want to have that comment text there, someone else can post it.

@Catija So mods can't reverse comment deletions that users conspired to remove by coordinating and flagging them?

.. or just delete the entire chain.
@SonicWizard We can only undelete mod deleted comments... which, amusingly, includes us deleting our own comments.
So, any comment that a mod wrote, can still be undeleted, even if they deleted the comment themselves because the mod status of the user trumps the self-deletion.

5:18 AM
Have there been any cases where six users coordinated and conspired to spam-nuke posts from a certain user without reason?

posts or comments?
comments only require three.

@Catija "posts"

@SonicWizard You're the one who suddenly changed the subject.

@Catija On the subject of conspiring to delete things, ...

@SonicWizard I have no clue. I'd hope not. It'd be difficult to catch unless mods are looking at deleted posts regularly or the user who posted it complains.
I'm sure it happens but I'd bet that, when discovered, the punishment is severe.

5:20 AM
Does clearing red flags restore the -100 rep lost for having a post deleted by red flags?

Yes.
As the adage goes, with the exceptions of merges and account deletions, nearly everything is reversible.

Tag merges only, right? Post merges can be reversed, though?

@SonicWizard Post merges can not be reversed. I don't know about tag merges... if you don't synonymize, the merged tag can still be used and you can remove a synonym.

@Catija I know, tag merges cannot be reversed. Shog posted about that recently.

I mean, you can go back to using the tag again... You'd have to manually replace the old tag, though.

5:24 AM
@Catija Yeah, but tag merging also involves rewriting history to say that the merged tag was the original one, and you can't revert the timeline back

I don't think most people really care about that.
Anyway, I'm going to bed.

@Catija Don't forget to ask Andy about it...goodnight :)

I think I found a meme: brainly.in
This site is the exact opposite of the StackExchange network

@Unitato good for them, but how is this a meme?
"Go brainly?"
"I'll brainly you?"

Well, I guess it's not a meme that can be used in a sentence
But it can definitely be a good laugh
For example, this one: brainly.in/question/3221334

@Unitato what about it? Classic homework question.... that's what that site is for.

Well yeah
The site does what it's for

If anything, we can laugh at sites like Yahoo! Answers since they claim to be with high quality while they're not.

I'm just saying it looks amusing from SE perspective

@JourneymanGeek wow - nice. I'm wondering - Shog replied to her.. I need to find out more about this woman

Guess all the major social media sites rely mostly on automated system rather than human moderation.... that's why so many false positives happen.
(e.g. that woman who shot YouTube employees because her vids got auto censored)

@ShadowWizard problem is human moderation dosen't scale
and its too tempting for dev types to throw code at problems

To moderate 100000 items a day you need like 1000 mods.... not really feasible.

user310756
@ShadowWizard what?

@ShadowWizard well many items can be handled in community.

AFAIK, Twitter is the most lenient in content policing (or perhaps I've read this from somewhere). Mature/explicit contents are everywhere......

@JourneymanGeek not when the community lack moderation tools

Also at some point the overhead of adding more mods gets too much

@HTTPS but at least hidden behind "click here to view"... ;)

@SonicWizard (there's two wizards deliberately confusing newcomers with a similar profile pic, i hope this is the right one) "To help ensure a quick closure and deletion of the question" (link) what's the difference between closing and deleting a bad question within 24hrs, vs, closing and getting it deleted within 2-3hrs? Why does that day-long delay even matter?
(just asking, coz i'm unfamiliar with the working system here, and am totally unaware of why that 2-3hr window is so important)

@ShadowWizard Maybe you should use a different picture of Shadow the Hedgehog, with a different background?

Trying to browse which questions need moderation through related questions is efficient, but frightening (e.g. when will it end!?)
I just tried it, and now there are 10 opened tabs originating from 1 question...

?
Anyway... who ordered a room in this hotel?
Even Google agree it's an hotel!
:P

1. Open a random question which needs moderation (comment, edit, VtC, DelVote)
2. Take a look at "Related" questions and judge the posts if they need moderation only from the title, then open those questions in new tabs.
3. Rinse & repeat

@PeterMortensen Please do not edit posts that were closed within five days. These cause the post to be sent to the reopen queue. These are either noise, or deprive the post author of their chance to have their post reopened.

3:54 PM
Perhaps to be exact, please only edit if it can improve the quality to be qualified for reopening. Otherwise, copyediting will waste the chance to get it reopened from the queue.

4:07 PM
If someone voted to delete my post, then I voluntarily delete it, can I undelete it to clear the delete vote?

Depends. Do you mind the obligatory talk with a mod afterwards?

Or is undeletion restricted if someone else also voted to delete? In that case, it would show as "deleted by Amy Rose, Sonic the Hedgehog"

I think OP can delete/undelete at any time, unless it got deleted by mod?

No, OP can vote to undelete (not unilaterally undelete) if three trusted users voted to delete

Well, ask Shadow to experiment with you then

A: Self-deletion and un-deletion without any changes should reinstate the original close/delete votes

m0saImplemented in build 2014.1.23.1883 on meta and 2014.1.23.1324 on sites. An delete undelete sequence on a post by the post owner will invalidate only the owner's delete vote when the undeletion is made.

user315433
OTOH if I delete a post, others undelete it, I can still one-click delete it.

I have an answer on SU which I voluntarily deleted, then a mod came by and undeleted and re-deleted it, which prevents me from undeleting it again should I choose.

4:35 PM
@SonicWizard huh, why did they do that?

user315433
@SonicWizard Moderator deletion is not undoable by anyone (10K users or the OP)

user315433
So I guess that was the goal.

@SFTP It was a totally benign answer. I looked at it again, and it looks like the mod pressed "undelete" by accident, and then corrected their mistake. I think I can just flag it for undeletion easily.

Yeah, I was wondering why they would purposefully do it
