Well maybe not a timer but an onChange event, not sure if there is one but I imagine there'd be

@bro eww... but The Cranberries were my favorite band when I was teenager, so you're forgiven. ;)

Cranberry sauce is underrated. Good with many savory meals

Is cranberry sauce with or without the 2 tons of added sugar any other cranberry product usually comes with?

@ShadowWizard who cares? If writing the answer is fun for you and can be found by others, what's the harm?
Vast majority of SO users benefit from the site without putting in more work than a Google query; worrying about spoon feeding is kinda laughable

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Link at end of answer: How can I report a fraud? by Jack Dimitriv on bitcoin.SE

8:03 PM
@ShadowWizard Oh, did Nick ask it? :P

@user5389107 you need the hygroscopic sugar for the pectin to work. Otherwise it's just cranberries floating in juice.

With the notable difference that googling is an useful skill that you need to develop as a developer and getting spoon fed is a lucky break you won't have when push comes to shove

@user5389107 nope. Client side JavaScript AJAX request to the server, server get the request, hanldes it with server side VBScript code (i.e. classic ASP), and sends the result back, so the client side JavaScript can consume it.

@user5389107 again, if you're not answering for your own enjoyment and the edification of others... Then why bother at all, regardless of effort?

8:05 PM
@Shog9 To make a better encyclopedia full of useful generally applicable and otherwise hard to get information

@Shog9 the harm is spoon feeding.
Something I was taught that is bad for overall quality.

Purely selfishly because it makes my job significantly easier and I'm a lazy sod who likes being able to google a problem description and come out with a nicely explained solution where I can still learn something in the process in under a minute flat
It's good enough that just keeping the quality standards as is sounds like a really good proposition for me.

@Catija hmm? Nick?

I think there's a difference between giving someone the answer and going through the explanation of how you get to the answer.
Stand back, I'm writing some JavaScript.

user315433
Clearly, the problem is too much caring about newcomers, not too little.

If you always do OP's homework, OP won't make it passed his or her junior year. — Alex R 2 days ago

@Catija huh, lol!
When Nick write JavaScript we really should be worried.... :D

It doesn't sound like he's having a great time of it... if you read that thread.

If you answer enough homework questions, students may stop being assigned homework and have to pay attention in class

I know that I lucked out because I had SO to fall back on when I had shit teachers and no guidance in the company and was expected to complete projects within deadlines with no prior experience or training
I could count on getting through it ... somehow, with copious amounts of googling and reading SO answers

I thought that the studies they'd done showed that homework was overrated anyway.

user315433
8:08 PM
@ShadowWizard With his 20k score in JS tag, certainly. stackoverflow.com/users/13249/nick-craver?tab=topactivity

@Shog9 so you propose answering everyone's homework so that homework becomes meaningless and stops being asked?

@ShadowWizard that's up to you. If you write a shitty code-only answer then it's a shitty answer no matter how much work the asker demonstrated

Isn't that sort of what that CS50 SE site was supposed to be for?

@JohnDvorak if they're fun to answer, knock yourself out

@Shog9 agreed. Food for thought.

8:09 PM
@Catija Homework isn't as effective as selective revision, but teachers use it as a tool to force students to revise

But yeah... This notion that we should be working to maintain someone else's information imbalance is kinda silly. The site exists to provide useful info; if someone else's job depends on folks not having useful info, that's their problem.

This harkens back to a feeling I get a lot. I'm not a senior developer so I can't answer many of the really complex questions, but when I answer a simple one I always feel guilty because upvotes on that feel unearned
Like my top answer from early on is explaining what a float is vs a double here: stackoverflow.com/questions/33163772/… given today I probably wouldn't even have answered that question and vtc'd it instead

Don't worry about having too much reputation

user310756
@Shog9 more work for you sorry

I'm mostly self-taught. I learned to program by reading... Code. Mostly code I found online back in the USENET days. The only thing I ever had to study for we're those tests where they want verbatim reaponses; all assignments involved stuff I knew well and could complete without a reference... While my classmates struggled

user315433
8:17 PM
@user5389107 what VTC reason would you use?

Hmm... I agree that 'homework' of the sort people get in school isn't anything particularly great, but for the 'homework' (i.e. impossibly hard cry-yourself-to-insanity) problems we got in undergrad, trying to solve those questions were what made the courses so incredibly good at teaching physics and CS

To me, the idea that folks should not read working code to learn to write working code is just not a sane proposition

I found this by typing "What's the difference between a float and a double" into google, by the way. I should have done that back then

@YvetteColomb I'll need to think about that for a bit

user315433
@user5389107 Your answer provides information that is not easy to find in the suggested target, if it's there.

8:20 PM
But, relevant question. I feel like it has been implied but not stated by several other posts these past few days

user315433
> I'm genuinely asking that management takes control.

user315433
What management?

I think Stack is the wrong place to fight over social issues

user315433
If you subtract the people who found a new job recently, those who are looking, and those who should be looking for one... what's left of the management?

not because I dislike the cause itself, I'm very much in support. But because I've seen what the immigration order post unleashed. That was one meta post. Clearly we have a pretty sizable contingent of contributors who are conservative and/or absolutely uninterested in even entertaining liberal causes

user310756
8:22 PM
@Shog9 yeh I'm well aware of that.. :/

@user5389107 hey, it prompted me to write a script for showing comment flags inline, which ended up being useful on IPS...

user310756
@bro hey nobody puts the community team in a corner - well except their bosses maybe :D

But, I prefer that we discuss rather than fight over these things.

@Shog9 glad you're enjoying it at least :p
I would probably get more out of fighting windmills if I could do more then flag and walk away

I mean... You can just walk away. I kinda have to keep watching

user310756
8:25 PM
@Shog9 it's so hard to take the emotional sting out of these subjects and I'm realising there's a lot of miscommunication and misunderstanding, as when people air out their differences it becomes clear theyr'e a lot more like minded than they realised.

@Shog9 Thats a luxury issue I'd like to have. I think you know me well enough by now to know that

@Shog9 your basic mistake is that you assume others are like you, i.e. learn from code given to them. Reality is, that many, probably most, people will just copy and paste without learning a tiny bit from this, and if not working as-is will come to some Q&A site and ask others to fix it for them.

user310756
anyway - taking the privilege of walking away.. sorry Shogies..

@YvetteColomb the nice thing about being a white male from America's Heartland is that I can more easily take a detached view of these discussions

@YvetteColomb I was writing an answer :(

8:28 PM
@ShadowWizard that's called "empathy": I care about people who will do what I did. Folks willing to cheat themselves out of an education aren't my problem.

@YvetteColomb without reading in depth, I can say that management decided to perform extensive research first before taking any actual actions, so I doubt you'll get any official and "real" answer any time soon, except maybe "we're still researching the issue, please wait".

@user5389107 actually can't recall who you are ATM

@Shog9 ouch, that stings :p

@Shog9 @Magi

user310756
@user5389107 you can write an answer lol I'm going to lie down. I've been so crook these past weeks, every time I think I'm better I get struck down again.

8:29 PM
Hey... I'm bad with numbers

It's actually part compliment too
It means that I'm not annoying enough to be on a shitlist just yet
or the shitlists deal poorly with name changes :D

user310756
@ShadowWizard meh - you debbie downer. note how I revert to teenage talk with you? Maturity abounds between us :D

@bro Joel, Jay, probably even Shog is considered "management". Or at least Tim. (Post)

user310756
@user5389107 hey you don't want to be on a poop list - trust me, I've lived my life on them :D

@ShadowWizard definitely not management

8:31 PM
@YvetteColomb This statement portrays an unfortunate lack of comprehension of the methods in which modern adolescents communicate.
(runs)

Those folks have to take classes and stuff

user310756
@ShadowWizard poor Tim.. yeh - but we don't know what happens to them in the office - the management of the management might line them up for a paddling!

@YvetteColomb hehe, now you made me laugh hard... we're almost even. :D

<-- the guy with the broom and the shovel

@Shog9 noted. lowering Shog's rank mentally

8:32 PM
@Shog9 Hey, at least you've got a shovel.

user310756
@Mithrandir hey I copy my 16 yo daughter! I know how to mimic teenager as good as the rest of you young whipper snippers! drops cane, panting from waving cane

I also have these pliers...

@YvetteColomb I imagine that Joel is above them all. :D

user310756
@ShadowWizard hey we'll never be even, we're really odd - the both of us!!

See, you have all these nice tools. We mods just have some slightly rusty hammers :P

user310756
8:34 PM
@ShadowWizard and one mighty ring to rule them all - I can't make that into a funny joke to fit people - help me out, I'm tired

@YvetteColomb shadowly odd, yup. :P
@YvetteColomb depends... what ring.. you mean. :D
runs

user310756
@ShadowWizard ;) yep we know each other too well

@YvetteColomb I answered your question, let the verbal beating commence

@Mithrandir And a sword :) Also, don't forget the waffles and unicorns. They help (as does vast quantities of tea, until I get a caffeine overdose :P)

user310756
@ShadowWizard for the love of - we're going to be kicked and undo all the inclusive work we I have been doing undoing

8:35 PM
New idea for an app: App that uses machine learning to figure out when a conversation is getting heated and automatically interjects with pictures of cute animals in moments of rising tension

user310756
@user5389107 oh no - do I have to verbally beat you? @sha can you please do this one?

name: de-escawwlation

user310756
@user5389107 that's insanity!!

user310756

user310756
ooh the app is working

8:37 PM
that horse is mildly terrifying btw

user310756
aggressively unoffensive and deferent

user310756
it took me a while to figure that one out

@YvetteColomb Three rings for the front-end devs under the sky / seven for the back-ends in their halls of stone / nine for CMs doomed to... get moved around in the company / one for Joel Spolsky on his dark throne / in the land of Stack Exchange, where the answers lie.

user310756
his name is Padawan and he is tiny.

I was talking about some of your MSO posts
"Hey guys <a bunch of praise and constructive things> mentions gender at all" - 150 downvotes in 10 minutes flat
2
You know how it goes

user310756
8:39 PM
He would only be 20 kgs and he comes up to my hips/waist - he looks like Bambi

@YvetteColomb sure! hitting @user5389107 with a verbal blunt stick :D
@Mithrandir nine? Aren't there ten? counting

People really don't like any social issues in their stack it seems

@ShadowWizard There are probably more than 10 developers in the company as well, but that's not how the verse goes :P

user310756
@user5389107 oh I knew what you were referring to - it was the use of aggressive to describe something unoffensive and deferrent - quite a creative writing flair - let me finish reading the post

@Mithrandir cheater! :P

8:41 PM
Aggressively unoffensive :D

user310756
@Mithrandir welldone

user310756
@user5389107 is it the null pointer exceptions?

mhm

user310756
@user5389107 why on earth would I beat you up for that answer? apart from the fact you are not in the echelons of management (and that's your good fortune).. it was a good post.

I'm just used to getting shit on from all sides in any debate about social causes

user310756
8:44 PM
I'm used to getting downvotes whenever I step onto meta -even if it's to read someone elses post. O>O

@Mithrandir And one ring to rule them all; currently owned by Stack Exchange's valued associate #00001. Or, as he calls it, his precious. :3

user310756
@Patrice gasp you would anticipate disagreeing with me? what the deuce? LOLOL I would expect most of meta to disagree with me.. it's a long standing tradition :) — Yvette Colomb ♦ 15 secs ago

user310756
ok on that note. I need to lie down, getting crooker and crooker, not to be confused with becoming a crook or crooked.

user310756
@PrincessLuna love it

@PrincessLuna nah, Jeff doesn't work at SE/O anymore

8:48 PM
I imagine some of the people whose primary opinion it was that you were being hysterical on MSO and needed to go are feeling pretty small seeing the diamond next to your name there @YvetteColomb

@YvetteColomb later!

@YvetteColomb Bye! I hope you wake up with lots of spoons

Besides @Mithrandir, I think I heard a story about S(E|O) trying to get the ring back, but he ran of to the Misty Mountains before they could get it.

Sounds like it's time for a group of dwarves to assemble.

9:01 PM
What's Joel's ring's name?

> It is okay to be nice to me, human. This dumpster was nice to me by not shouting at me, and even though it is nice to have more garbage thrown on top of me, the intense shouting that followed was scary and unnecessary and not nice. Please try to be more like this dumpster, human. -- A bear at 2:00 PM - 29 Apr 2018

I follow that account mostly for its advice on SE interactions.

@bro following A bear is not a good idea, I think
Unless you wanna find a picnic too

user315433
9:51 PM
It seems the only way to work reopen queue without getting banned is to open question in a new tab and vote from there.

user315433
Clear and reasonably scoped questions that are closed by "too broad" super-downvotes are presented as "known bad" audits.

Q: Were the changes to the time limits supposed to occur retroactively?

damryfbfnetsiAs of two days ago, the minimum time thresholds for going through the definition and commitment phases of a proposal were changed. This change was announced one week ahead of the change. In that announcement, there is the following text: Going forward, we generally expect proposal authors to...

user315433
Aha, there's a candidate for launch (100%): eosio. Shockingly, the topic is blockchain.

Finally a place for my own marginalized group: Dutch Languages
@bro Meh, they learned their lesson and skip that one and take the next ...

heh
@PrincessLuna I don't think you lose the number
@YvetteColomb heh, Cindy's views probably represent what many folks see to be what SE should be.

10:37 PM
@JourneymanGeek whoa, no one could have said it better
Not you, Cindy

Agreed

@JourneymanGeek yeah you suck :p

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ I do have room for improvement, yes.

Dogs aren't particularly articulate

But I do agree with what she says, and how she says it.
Most dogs don't type ;)

10:39 PM
Particulately articulart
@JourneymanGeek I usually only have room for sitting

user315433
10:53 PM
@rene Unfortunately, that one is "For questions in theoretical and conceptual Blockchain technology outside specific implementations" so it would not solve the blockchain problem.

11:31 PM
@Journeyman does dog food consist of apostrophes?
Wait, I hope I didn't marginalize you
And then marginalize myself for marginalizing you
I think we should all stick to the header
