Election over!

@Taryn Shog needs you to spot him some rep

I'm just showing off my ability to remember your name

> Election closes just now.
Interesting wording

@Shog9 :p
@Machavity he doesn't need rep

@Taryn 9 is enough rep for anyone, Amirite?

Q: Spring 2018 Community Moderator Election RESULTS

Shog9Yes, spring is in the air, and a Stack Overflow's thoughts turn to new moderators! This post concludes the auspicious tenth moderator election on Stack Overflow - not counting those two other elections we ran prior to election number one. The votes are in, the results have been tallied, and the...

I owe you a virtual ice cream now

Net +1 mod, after Matt and Ed Cottrell retire.

Ed is retiring? Aw

Just another congrats ping @YvetteColomb
@gparyani We can probably rely on the three new mods to be over-achievers for at least a few weeks, and do the work of 6 people :) — meagar ♦ 1 min ago

8:06 PM
@SFTP Ed? :(

(after asking if additional mods will be called up to meet additional demand due to net gain of just one mod)

@SonicWizard Probably not. The SO queue seems to have a good turnover rate right now

user315433
Yvette and Brett were super close at the end, 6485 : 6468.

@Shog9 ah, Yvette managed to overcome last year's drama...
shots all around... let the mopping begin

That gives me hope for next year. My chat history is worse than watergate

Only staff employees have mod power here, and I have not been staff an employee for a while.

Staff as in.. SE employees?

@SterlingArcher Yes.

I have no idea who gets paid by SE and who is just a mod anymore

@JeremyBanks dat javascript, dough

@SterlingArcher Well, now you know... if they're blue in here, they're paid to hang out here.

Seems cushy

@canon I guess I can't vouch that the external scripts aren't hacking you.

Sometimes I think I still hear him... closing questions...

That he does

user315433
At 20% of former efficiency, but still does.

I was kinda hoping he'd pop in and say "stop telling people I'm dead"

Trivia: if sorted by reputation, the winners would be ranked #2, #7, #9 among the 10 candidates.

user315433
So that was the 10th election on Stack Overflow, not counting the prehistoric ones.

If you guys see somebody answer a question that should really (not subjectively) be closed, what do you?

user315433
Close the question.

Is a gentle nudge saying "hey bud you really should close and comment instead" the best way to say "stop encouraging this behavior"
@SFTP besides that

@SterlingArcher Depends on the user and the site, I would think.

user315433
8:44 PM
So much drama results from those gentle nudges.

Mainly high rep users rep farming
It's frustrating to see

user315433
Rob Conery was gently nudged, I suspect.

I usually pad it with "I wont downvote, but don't be surprised if you get some" to try and tell them it's an olive branch

user315433
Hm. Math is the only other site with >5 elections; it had 6.

user315433
5 elections is pretty common by now: SF, AU, Gaming, Cooking, Photo, Wordpress.

ew, WP

user315433
Surprisingly, Unix had only 2 despite its size.

Because Mrozek isn't hanging around in The Tavern anymore.
That's what happens when you leave The Tavern. Gotta find some way to fritter away all that extra time.

user315433
Unix election #1 had 54 voters. Their second had 580.

user315433
Elected in 2011 by 54 users, on the site that currently has ... 234700 or so.

Hi, random, probably very minor question: I was just reviewing some suggested edits on quantum computing (join us!) and came across this suggested edit. It turns out that the question was deleted before I came across the edit - is this supposed to happen? Is this the sort of question I'd be better off asking on the site's meta?

Edits are still pending even if the question or answer was deleted, yes. Pretty sure that's intentional.

@Catija Fair does - thanks!

Q: Restrict the access to suggested edit reviews on deleted posts

GlorfindelThis suggested edit on an answer deleted as rude/abusive is visible, even without logging in (and for users with less than 10k reputation). These users can't see the answer 'directly', via the revisions page, or a direct link to the source. This is a potential avenue for spammers, just like th...

Ahh, so if the question was undeleted, and the edit was accepted, the question would be undeleted with the edit already applied?

10:11 PM
@Catija Nope, I think it's a bug, because according to animuson, all reviews are invalidated when a post is deleted: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/164288/…
@Mithrandir24601 Believe so

Election/9 results were announced as "2017 Community Moderator Election RESULTS".
Election/10: "Spring 2018 Community Moderator Election RESULTS". Hmm.

Hats 2018 Community Moderator Elections

user315433
An Idea: sponsored elections. "Oracle 2018 Moderator Election", etc.

@SFTP pretty safe bet for a July election that there won't be a second one in the same year

@Shog9 When will the link to the results on OpaVote.com be posted on the election page?

user315433

user315433
10:37 PM
@SonicWizard Aren't they already? opavote.com/results/5229219307061248/0

@SFTP Do they really need to be the same pattern?
@SFTP They're not linked

user315433
Linked from meta announcement. meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/365198/…

user315433
A link being added to election page is not automatic. Election/9 has it as an exception. Most don't. stackoverflow.com/election/8

oh, right, I forgot that we had that option

user315433
It'd be nice if something like that happened automatically, because meta posts can be ... lost. Deleted, edited..

10:41 PM
Heh...
Very little of this is automated
That's been sort of an ongoing argument for... pretty much the entire time I've been working here
Grace Note has a detailed plan for automating it, but... Whether or when that'll get implemented is anyone's guess.

By the way, this was a very close call apparently: the three winners in the end each had the same number of assigned ballots, with one candidate having 17 fewer assigned ballots
@Shog9 So if it becomes necessary to call up additional moderators to meet additional demand, Brett DeWoody is first in line to be called?

you can answer that question yourself...
Run the ballot for 4 winners

Yes?

user315433
@SonicWizard That's by design, excessive votes for those already assured of winning are redistributed among other candidates.

user315433
The three winners part is, I mean. The difference of 17 is indeed indicative of a close election.

10:47 PM
@SFTP Yeah, I noticed; the thing I was referring to was the one candidate with just 17 fewer assigned ballots

@SFTP oh, that's right, I started using month names because someone complained about seasons being insensitive to folks in the Southern Hemisphere.
Fortunately, no one like that was running this time around.

user315433
Or, they are too happy swamped with flags to notice.

I wrote this announcement after checking on my tomato seedlings, while watching the snow collect on my patio, and all I could think of was "Spring"

user315433
@SonicWizard Yes. "Winners are Brett DeWoody, Rob, Samuel Liew, and Yvette Colomb." It takes only 7 rounds now.

user315433
If two are called up, then Stephen Rauch gets in too.

user315433
10:58 PM
Not excited about the prospect of a 101 flags / 70 downvotes / 0 meta answers (besides the questionnaire) user being called up as a mod.

user315433
Probably not spam, has other answers on other topics.

user315433
Including an outright disturbing topic, Good instant decaf coffee

not pingable here so I guess I'd have to make fun of it on twitter

@SFTP Might as well throw sand in hot water.

My coffee vendor mistakenly sent me 5lbs of decaf a while back.

11:10 PM
i imagine that ended poorly

Since shipping would've eaten up any value in returning it, they sent me a replacement and asked me to just keep it.
So, over the course of the next 6 months, I'd mix a little bit into each batch I roasted
It really wasn't bad
Mild, smooth
Evened out the taste of some of the harsher roasts
Also, "decaf" still has a respectable amount of caffeine in it
so, good bed time drink, like tea
all in all, a much better experience than the little decaf packets they leave next to those tiny drip machines in hotel rooms
with the "decaf" written such that a bleary-eyed traveler in a dark room can hardly be expected to see it
those are just cruel

user315433
The hotel I stayed in recently had Keurigs in rooms.

user315433
Progress, of sorts.

@Shog9 Can you please tag this as by design (if it is, I bet it is)? meta.stackexchange.com/questions/298163/…

The fridge I have has the option of having one put in the door... I think that's just too much, really.

user315433
11:16 PM
New game: reading Shog's post, guess how much decaf was mixed in his coffee.

@Catija for... cold brew?

No, I think it actually has a heating element so that it behaves like an actual Keurig.

@SonicWizard probably more of an oversight

though I'm not really sure how we could fix that

11:17 PM
K-Cups are not recyclable
@Shog9 We already extend the review limit for users who want to review an edit to their own post, but would otherwise be unable to due to the limit

user315433
The plastic covers that pretty much everyone gets for their drip coffee cup are in principle recyclable, but .... never in practice.

If you care for the environment, might I suggest you go for a Flavia machine

@Catija huh. Hot water too.
hot water over grounds does not require much in the way of waste
and your garden or potted plants will appreciate the grounds themselves
@SonicWizard so... If you care about the environment...

Yep. I think they came out with this version shortly after we bought ours (it had been returned, so we got it at a good discount... fridges are expensive!)

The drink pouches are fully recyclable, plus the coffee comes straight out of the pouch into the cup, because the machine operates by pumping hot water into the pouch, which tears a hole in the bottom, and the bottom of the pouch is itself the spout

11:21 PM
Or... just use a drip coffee machine and either a permanent or biodegradable filter?

Actually, I care even more for the environment. I don't drink coffee at all.

only beer, eh?
To each their own

@Shog9 I'm a teetotaler

Right now, I can't even stand the smell of coffee.

The last time I drank a hot caffeinated beverage was on a plane, when I was given tea on the captain's dime because of my flight log

11:23 PM
@SonicWizard mmm.... tea
don't know if I'll ever get around to it, but building a walk-in fridge w/ thick foam insulated walls and a modified window a/c for a cooler always struck me as a more efficient setup than these boxes where all the cold air falls out the bottom when you open the door.
also a good place to sit and think

@Shog9 Go to Costco
They have one of those in most stores

yes, Costco is also a good place to sit and think
they have snacks

The Fresh Produce section, and in some stores the Dairy section is a walk-in refrigerator

yup

@Shog9 We built a beer fermenter out of that stuff. Used giant ice cubes and a computer fan to move the air around.

11:28 PM
making pilsners?

You couldn't fit in it, though... I don't think.
Making anything in Texas summer.

@Catija Popular Mechanics?

Now we have a chest freezer and a thermostat.
@SonicWizard ?
@SonicWizard No. Some homebrewing website.

@Shog9 Can you please respond to that post?

11:57 PM
@Shog9 heh. That's what Indian coffee is
An coffee filter is 2 stacked cans with holes in the top one.

Hey, it works.
I've make coffee with less in a pinch
