I like the colons. They look nice... I've always been a fan of doing that around dashes that weren't in-word or creating hyphenated words... I've also seen people putting spaces around slashes.

UK publications tend to prefer spaced en dashes, US publications tend to prefer unspaced em dashes.

But programmers who put spaces before their semicolons are doing this just to spite me.

I think of Arnold Zwicky as an eminent linguist who's the father of a programmer/sysadmin friend of mine, but he also has a history as a gay-rights activist which I'd forgotten, so citing him in the queer post struck me as coincidental in an amusing way.
