Chris EmeryMaps and flat maps and caches oh my... We've got objects...it's up to AIs to figure how and why. The world of programming is about to get an ai assist from the twillight zones. It is better to thing of what. how and why (and where)...than the codes behind it.

SO election, left side nav, custom site designs going away mostly, sponsored sites... A lot for one day.

tbh, the custom sites going away bothers me the most
SO election, eh, happens. Left site nav seems a potentially positive thing. Sponsored sites - eh, if someone wants to pay to advertise on a Q&A site, we benefit - and its not a new thing (AU)

(catching the missed convo while sleeping...)
@Catija +1. custom logo is always better than a generic one :D

Rachel Ferrigno on March 13, 2018

Each year, we ask the developer community about everything from their favorite technologies to their job preferences. This year marks the eighth year we’ve published our Annual Developer Survey results—with the largest number of respondents yet. Over 100,000 developers took the 30-minute survey this past January. This year, we covered a few new topics ranging from artificial intelligence to ethics in coding.

See the Results Here

DevOps and machine learning are important trends in the software industry today. Languages and frameworks associated with these kinds of works are on the rise, and developers working in these areas command the highest salaries. …

Cyanoacrylates include methyl 2-cyanoacrylate, ethyl-2-cyanoacrylate (commonly sold under trade names such as "Super Glue" and "Krazy Glue"™, of Toagosei), n-butyl cyanoacrylate and 2-octyl cyanoacrylate (used in medical, veterinary and first aid applications). @Bart why? :(
In Israel wine is really cheap... some of the "real" stuff too.
@Bart coffee is easy, your consumption is 1000% more than the average.

@ShadowWizard it usually disappears .... (into my face)

@Bart that's bad. you should lock the bottle until you get back home! ;)

Some packages are really hard to open. If I count all the times that I gently try to open the sack to only allow for one dropje at a time, it rips open completely and then I have to eat them all off course.

So... put then in small nylon bag? @rene

@Derpy how do people not know him? ;p

Ah, I think Joe Blow should also nominate himself
Imagine Evan Caroll, YCS, Joe Blow got elected...

the buzzword is strong in this one.

@HTTP tbh, a few things could happen
they could end up excellent mods, realising its the ultimate troll
or mess up badly, and get asked to leave
More likely the latter ;)

2:19 PM
oh, nice...
> [cut] in Egypt, Sandvine PacketLogic devices were being used by a Telecom operator for making money by:

@HTTP that'd be... very random.
Also, maybe I just wasn't around at the time, but is Evan legit? from the nomination and lack of answers page, it really just seem like someone who want to throw shit in the fan, disregard other people's opinion and whine about comment deletion.

Sure he is legit.

@Catija Yes. In some cases this can be something that comes from, or is at least started by the community. I think most technical topic sites will probably want to at least take a stab at designing their own. Once they have, we can either use what they've got, or our designers can help them flesh it out into something that can be put in place.
But for the non-technical sites, we're still happy to let designers handle it all.

2:34 PM
@rene That was an apt demonstration of me not really asking a question ;)

Essentially, a community will be able to get as involved as they want to get in the design process.

@FélixGagnon-Grenier did I answer something ;)

well, not exactly. but my immediate inner thoughts about "Sure he is legit." was "riiiiiiiiiiiiite". hence, a non-question really.

@FélixGagnon-Grenier Evan is Evan. Just vote for whoever you fell will be the best mods ;)

@TimPost interesting. For some reason I was of the understanding that, while users were given the opportunity to weigh in on the design after it was designed... letting them actually design it wasn't an option.

2:38 PM
Dare I ask... does he just HAVE to bring politics jokes into moderation election discussions? I somehow recall we were asked to keep politics to the politics discussion chatrooms.

@Derpy sure
Gotta keep it topical

@Catija It'll still be an option. Of course they'll want some guidance and feedback, but designers will still do most / all of the work if the folks in the community don't feel so inclined.

@Derpy election === politics ...

@JourneymanGeek no, seriously. Political flaming attempt in a cadidation IMHO is more than enough to give him a free drive to the exit door.

@Derpy which usually happens

2:42 PM
@Derpy you have cars indoors?

@JourneymanGeek will eagerly wait for that, I have pop-corn.

@Derpy heh, this used to happen a lot just... erm, don't get overwhelmed.
(I don't actually think there's much fallout)

but really, I thought he has been suspended on SO before, and thus I thought it's impossible to nominate...

@JohnDvorak who said I am indoor? I am above the clouds and the "door" is just a wooden plank that ends right above some rocky mountains.

@HTTP that check is manual

3:05 PM
@JourneymanGeek really? I thought I saw an MSE posts from some user that tried to nominate but couldn't due to a suspension.

@rene I think there's a warning but you're not actually prevented because some people have been suspended "for science"?

> "We have dirty mean people running this network now doing very bad things"
seriously, please. Remove this guy from the election.

@HTTP Taking a stand against the survey?

@Derpy I assume it is discussed in today's call ...

today what?

3:12 PM
Also note what Jon Clements position is on noisy election comments chat.stackoverflow.com/transcript/message/41605887#41605887
@Derpy IIRC there is a daily video/phone/chat call, I assume they discuss thing there that need their immediate action
I admit that there probably is a line somewhere for what is allowed and it looks like Evan tries to find that line.

@rene and yet again I am left wondering how something can be seen as "not offensive" by the community.
Let's be clear there: either he is talking about the staff, calling them "dirty mean people" or about the current mods.
either case...
not polite.

That was the issue raised in SOCVR: you can't flag election comments
@Derpy totally agree

user315433
On what site would one ask about draining a swamp?

WorldBuilding?

@Derpy at risk of my conflict of interest, I think the entire nomination is demeaning to the process

3:17 PM
@rene what I meant is that any reference to Jon position on "noisy" comments fall flat. Those aren't noisy. Those are just rude / passive-agressive.

stack doesn't have to put up with someone attempting regulatory capture of a moderator position

Gardening & Landscaping was my first thought, because of Landscaping part. But the scale may be an issue.

@FTP Outdoors?

Fill it with sand and mine the sand?

@Derpy sure, what I tried to convey that they will allow a lot, a heck of a lot. Until it is enough. You have a point that you find those comments over the top, not nice, not polite, rude and want them gone. And I agree they have no place or real purpose

3:20 PM
@FTP LifeHack?

user315433
@Catija That's about hanging out outside, not transforming the landscape.

@rene the problem isn't with controversial opinions. This guy is basicly running against the system itself.

user315433
If a comment is out of line, pinging a CM who's present in the election room would seem reasonable.

and that's how SO has changed from 2008

user315433
(I assume there is a CM pingable in the election room, and that they are there on purpose.)

Grace Note created it, so they must be pingable in there.

@JonEricson is pingable there (and also here ;) ) I can't imagine they didn't already notice.
