of course they're making loads of noise right now to install it :\

@Stijn Bet they will do this for this year April Fool Day. SE Lootboxes with items like "rep multiplier for X hours", "downvote power increase #% for X hours", "+#k Rep potions" and such
and the real joke will be that on 2th, April they will actually really charge you for the items :P

@Derpy you're pretty much describing UniCoins -- we already did that in 2014 :)

@balpha That was fun :)

@balpha Unicoins gave you choice on what to buy. Lootboxes... not at all! And again, the "actually charge the users" is the part you want to add :P

ponies ! = unicorns

just only keep Rarity ones and give me the rest

also compare ponies to unicorns are like to compare brussels sprouts to cabbages!

@Telkitty considering the only official recognized difference between a pony and an horse is size I fall to see your point
I think ponies should be under 150cm tall?

12:43 PM
I searched for 'mega pony'. I didn't expect that.
or, I should expect that...
If ponies should be under 150cm tall....

It’s that time of year again—the annual developer survey is now open! This survey marks the 8th year we’ve been asking the developer community for their thoughts on everything from programming languages to career preferences. This year, we added in new questions about artificial intelligence, ethics in coding, and more.

As in previous years, anonymized results of the survey will be made publicly available under the Open Database License. We encourage you to download and analyze the dataset yourself when it becomes available. Throughout the survey, certain answers you give will be treated  …

Is the Developer Survey not tested with real users before releasing it? Only in-house testing?
Every year it only takes an hour for multiple issues to pop up.

3:56 PM
The issues on Developer Survey are to make sure that you are not robo-surveying... uh, wait....

Is there a list of SE sites that have changed site name? It seems like there's a lot of them.
@Derpy Supposedly. But I'm quite sure the 2 inch "blind bag" ponies are deliberately made such that you can just barely tell which pony it is from the outside, because there's a small transparent window to see the color, and you can feel the shape from the nylon bag.

@b_jonas define 'a lot'? I know of Programmers -> Software Engineering
The API provides the list I think, one sec

I only remember
- Not Programming Related -> Programmers -> Software Engineering (scoping)
- Moderators -> Community Building (scoping)
- Lego -> Bricks (trademark)
- Beer -> Beer, Wine & Spirits (scoping)

You can parse api.stackexchange.com/2.2/sites?pagesize=1000 for aliases, but IIRC there was an easier way even. I just can't find it.

Chip Hacker -> Electronics and Robotics -> Electronics -> Electronics Design -> Electrical Engineering

4:12 PM
^ ... not a joke :O

@Stijn "Sci Fi" to "Sci Fi & Fantasy", "Games" or maybe "Gaming" to "Arqade", "Cooking" to "Seasoned Advice" IIRC, and recently "Mythology" to "Mythology and Folklore"

user315433
@chirlu Astronomy set a new personal record in December, with 173 spam posts. Not bad considering that SO, which is 2000-3000 times larger, had 372.

@b_jonas only few of the blind bag sets had the small preview window. Most didn't. You could still use the serial number since they had a recognizable code format printed on the bag (so for example you would know that A13 was Fluttershy) but... good luck trying that and don't get an angry stare from the shop owner.
also...

user315433
I would call this spam rate astronomical, but we already used that one.

@if.... the real problem/question is... they slipped through Smokey?

4:19 PM
why would you want a blind bag pony anyway? I mean.. this is supposed to be Fluttershy!

user315433
No, Smokey reports them. Astronomy is ahead of Drupal in reports for the last 30 days.

user315433
Reading about GSoC now, since SymPy is participating in it as always... for a good cause, but it does look like a major headache.

user315433
Math equivalent of it would be REU programs, I guess. Except those rarely produce anything of value to the discipline (they are of value to the participants of course).

Since most other topics would have to be carefully avoided.

So this makes me not want to take the survey at all.
Why were there so many questions about advertisement? Is this whole survey thing just a cover for you to evaluate how to improve your advertising revenue? Because that's exactly how it felt after 3 pages of asking about my advertising preferences and habits... — musefan 1 hour ago

@if.... this is absolutely true:
> We need a Stack Overflow Annual User Survey.

1. Why? – To measure our user’s demographics

2. Why? – Potential advertisers judge our site by demographics to see if we fit in with their goals

3. Why? – You’ll see more relevant ads increasing the value of our advertising

4. Why? – With more valued advertisers, we can spend more time developing awesome new features

5. Why? – New features create a better user experience, supporting Stack Overflow’s mission to make the internet a better place than we found it.
Alison Sperling on December 21, 2010

As you’ve seen from the site analytics, Stack Overflow grew significantly in 2010.  We noticed some major technical shifts – more global visitors and an increase in use of Chrome as a web browser.  But, our visitors are more than just their web browser, operating system and screen resolutions, they are real people with real careers – valuable knowledge which isn’t measured by Google.  Some people may ask why we need to do a survey at all – so, taking poetic license on the 5 Whys, here’s how we got to the root answer: …

I always thought those surveys were for the greater good, I feel a bit dumb now :p

user315433
"What's good for us is good for you"

Social engineering at the best

4:50 PM
The primary purpose of the survey has always been about improving our ability to serve relevant advertising, @musefan. We've expanded it considerably over the past 7 years to try to make the results more generally useful and interesting, and last year's results seem to have been widely successful in achieving that secondary goal, but that core need remains in place - IMHO, that's a far better bargain than the sorts of intrusive analytics (with secret results) that certain other sites use for this purpose. — Shog9 ♦ 36 secs ago

I answered a question that involved a meta-formula: for example, ="=HYPERLINK(""" & A1 & """, """ & B1 & """)" is a meta-formula that outputs the formula =HYPERLINK(A1, B1). Next logical step: a formula that, given any Excel formula (as a string input), will output its meta-formula.

howdy folks! i’m in touch with the moderator of a panel at the next SXSW about programmers protecting themselves from illegal and/or immoral things they are told to do by employers sometimes. (it’s based on this article)

the organizer/moderator is looking for panelists to share experiences around that topic and talk about what the software industry should do to protect programmers. she reached out to us thinking some SO folks might have some opinions on that subject
anyone in here interested, or have a suggestion of someone who might be? (SXSW gives panelists a free pass to the conference, so that’s an incentive i suppose. not sure about travel expenses though)
