Q: RIP Jerry Pournelle

MithrandirJerry Pournelle, the first author to write a novel on a computer, passed away September 8th, at the age of 84. He has a long list of science fiction novels, and he has his own tag here on SFF: jerry-pournelle. “Dead. I had to be dead. But dead men don't think about death. What do dead men th...

We're going to have double smokeys for a while until we can work out what's wrong, sorry.

@rene that and gamedev crunch. Fun times.

Smokey isn't accepting commands; we don't know why but we'll get around to fixing it as soon as we can. Sorry for the inconvenience.
@angussidney maybe something changed on SE side? API? Though other bots don't appear to be affected.
@ShaWizDowArd transitioning over to another instance seems to have fixed the issue, but we have no idea why. For now, we're just going to leave it and see what happens
11:15 AM
oh
So auto detection works, just not commands
@ShaWizDowArd it's going through puberty, internally screaming along with "F*ck you, I won't do what you tell me"
11:30 AM

Let's hope he won't rebel and run away.

Smokey's getting old and hard of hearing. Wonder if there's a pill for hearing loss.
Will you two decide? Teenager or old?? @Bart @Michelle
Maybe we have to settle on midlife crisis then?

@Bart I'm sure @Michelle isn't in any crisis. He's just Normal. Human. In his mid-life.

user315433
Well, minus imgur and Google... and I don't know about %20http, links obfuscated by spaces?
Never considered my country to be spam nation. lol
Maybe because we have no laws against it...
user315433
11:54 AM
Not only is Israel #1, it's the first to reach 1000 spam posts (Art's query ran on stale data): metasmoke.erwaysoftware.com/domains/147
@Michelle whoa... what a respect. ;)
user315433
> No whois data available.
@Michelle probably, so they don't appear as links in the post itself
user315433
An interesting thing about big market is the names of spammers...
user315433
11:56 AM
Something something juriya, with minor variations, for two years...
juriya: resistance (translated from... dunno)
user315433
Not Hebrew, I guess.
Hausa language???
@Michelle indeed, appears to be Indian spammer
abusing Israel name!
googling "juriya" returns Hindi language
11:58 AM
How rude.
lol
user315433
And Nigerian usernames. An international effort.
user315433
They didn't even pay for private domain registration data? Apparently not afraid of getting spam.
@Michelle probably big enough to not care, yeah
Now that's a big botnet: zdnet.com/article/…
user315433
Juriya village is located in Bhuj Tehsil of Kachchh district in Gujarat, India.. I guess the Nigeria / Hausa language connection is incidental.

Took me long time to figure how to use L3 and R3 in PS controller though
Just didn't figure I can push that stick
@ShaWizDowArd unsurprising
Most spam is from india
@Magisch yeah but wonder why?
user315433
12:12 PM
Not much different from other IT services.
user315433
Large scale outsourcing.
@ShaWizDowArd Probably because employing spammers in europe is unprofitable
Profit margins on spam (especially email spam) are small enough that it barely makes a profit at indian sweatshop wages and working hours
No way you could run that in europe, even below minimum wage
40 new cases of serial upvoting
I'm gonna flag these later this week I cba atm
Meh, no recent "listenings" any more from GnomeSlice/whatevernamehegoeswith
12:33 PM
@Bart you miss those?
@Magisch yeah, probably. But isn't China even "cheaper" in that context?
@ShaWizDowArd yup
@cazc_941 @Bart miss your Today's Listening
@ShaWizDowArd cause many folk have non existant morals, lax regulations, cheap, vaguely english educated labour...
@JourneymanGeek you can say that about many places though
@ShaWizDowArd well, the last bit...
12:42 PM
Same
Hack, it's the same in Israel, lol
Many people know English, but don't bother with its grammar or syntax
1:06 PM
@ShaWizDowArd I don't think by much
@ShaWizDowArd I'm constantly hard on myself because my english isn't native speaker level, but
some of the native speakers don't really seem to try either
English hard I know but can type this
@JourneymanGeek If this job is your ticket to your family not starving, would you be concerned about the moral implications of annoying people with advertising?
It's mostly relative, y'know
I know I'd rather be a spammer then starve
@ShaWizDowArd lol, thanks. Going through some old ones now.
Testing my new headphones. :D Good investment
@Magisch pretty sure the people actually making the big bucks are not starving
@JourneymanGeek Pretty sure indians aren't making the big bucks from spam operations
most of the bosses are headquartered in europe or the US
1:19 PM
@Magisch there was actually a (partial) article on this on Ars I think

How do these people get rep? stackoverflow.com/questions/46161899/…
user315433
6:52 PM
@canon In this case, by asking questions (158 questions vs 20 answers, most rep is from questions)
@rene x_x
@Michelle Oh, I know...
user315433
Feature request: cap question-rep so it never exceeds answer-rep. Because the rep computations are not complicated enouth.
user315433
Or simpler: rep cap is 200/day for answer-upvotes and 50/day for question-upvotes.
Question upmod: 1, downmod: -5
7:31 PM
@rene I do. And it's even more noticeable with the noise cancelling headphones :D
I'll ping you when you don't expect it. See how long it takes to be annoying ...
You're already annoying. No need to ping.
Ha!
What headphones did you get?
Bose QuietComfort 35
7:35 PM
pricy
339 € at the Wehkamp
Yup, quite. There is a 25 version which is cheaper. But then again, at least 8 hours per day, 5 days a week. If it lasts a couple of years, it's worth it.
Especially in the noisy place where we work now
