#6 Tiny Giant

user315433
A rather different set of candidates from last time. Alexander O'Mara, NathanOliver, Floern, and Tiny Giant never ran for SO mod before.

user202362
1:16 AM
why Stackoverflow so serious if not aimed 4 IPO at start?

@Alex They're all interesting candidates

@Telkitty eh, I think a lot of tech companies build a product, then work out how to make money off it.
and I'm not sure if SO's going to IPO. They have a lot more freedom doing that they do now

@JourneymanGeek Ask Joel

user315433
Jun 13 at 13:30, by Guero
> Joel Spolsky, the CEO and co-founder, tells me that the company is not disclosing its valuation but tells me that it’s high enough that the company is no longer a likely acquisition target, and positions it for either an IPO or potential private equity deal.

@πάνταῥεῖ what makes you think I can ask him? ;p
(I mean, back in the day, we totally saw Jeff dropping by chat, but we've never really has the same level of interaction with joel)

1:25 AM
@JourneymanGeek Somehow weirdly sounds like "Better call Saul"

@πάνταῥεῖ I'm not as much of an insider as I seem ;p
(if I seem at all)

user202362
Of course, you need to choose the right timing for IPO, IIRC, each failed IPO would cost you 500,000 - 1,500,000 ... and that's a few years back

user202362
Not all IPO succeed

user202362
@JourneymanGeek I bet he knows YCS, rofl

@JourneymanGeek Sure, that was one of the 1st signs that made Joel suspicious somehow. Not to mention some of their weird blog posts about software dev processes or abusing the site for political statements (even if I would agree with these).
@Telkitty ROTFL!
It's no longer managing the "Coding Horror" but the "Big Management Horror"
Biz devastates grounds of serious knowledge (because that's not popular enough, and never really was). It makes people feel just as dumb as they are, most of them don't like that and react negatively.

1:38 AM
lol

@JourneymanGeek I'm not so sure that this is even funny :-P

@πάνταῥεῖ I actually kinda think (as a partial business major!) that in some cases, that sort of thing is essential.
said political statements are an example of corporate social responsibility

user315433
#7 Yvette Colomb. Is there anyone from SOCVR who hasn't nominated yet?

@JourneymanGeek Earning money is stupid, earning insight is eternal.

user202362
I was going to nominate Tvette if she hasn't nominated herself, rofl

1:41 AM
... right. I'm sure the money for the servers will magically rain from the sky...

@JourneymanGeek I know what you mean ...
@Telkitty You only can nominate yourself at all ...

@Alex I guess @rene is still pissed off about the comment flags changing

user202362
Earning lolcats is the key to the heaven, heaven for people with special needs ~cough~

@Telkitty Seriously, we need platforms to share useful pubic and free contents. Running such platforms doesn't outperform without investments and ROI.
I'm open for achieving a warm MEOW ever though ...
@JourneymanGeek There are better places than abusing your own platform overriding all of your policies placed there. That just leaves a bad taste ...

1:54 AM
@πάνταῥεῖ eh. The difference between here and elsewhere is you have a human face to the company.
You're pissed at Joel cause there's a Joel.
Not a faceless machine running these sorta things
and what better places? What sort of platform would work?

@Telkitty Nice hat!

And its not like opposing voices are cruelly shut down (as long as they are civil)
and there's been a few precidents in the past for things like that
Sure, it was emotive, completely unpolished, and pretty genuine.
Also got closed and reopened dozens of times;

@JourneymanGeek I actually appreciate he's not faceless, that gives us a chance ...

user202362
I have never seen a faceless person, I assume they would have problem surviving through infancy

@πάνταῥεῖ what do we not have chances about?

2:01 AM
@Telkitty Seems some people survive up to grown up stage:
@JourneymanGeek All I want to say is, that uncensored, unpopular knowledge needs a chance to live somewhere.

@πάνταῥεῖ eh
A certain amount of quality control is essential to keep people engaged.
Also. Discussion boards are vile cesspits filled with stuff like that no?

@JourneymanGeek Sure, but that shouldn't be biz or "flock of sheep" driven!

user202362
I disagree, I think people prefer place with more freedom as long as their freedom does not cause detriment to other people

@πάνταῥεῖ practically speaking, as a mod for a original trilogy in 4 parts site, corporate meddling in our moderation is minimal.

@JourneymanGeek And if even the CEO overrules the quality measures, how much can we trust what's going on?
@JourneymanGeek "corporate meddling in our moderation is minimal" Good so, and I would expect that at a minimum.

2:11 AM
goes to take a stand about hackintoshes

user202362
you actually need a PC or laptop for that, for ultimate cheapskating, run VM with MacOS on it

user202362
it's actually not terribly hard

user202362
although, I would like to install ios on my $45 android one day

user202362
just for the heck of it

Science and free research are going to get discriminated more and more because of business ROI and political reasons. I'm not willing to accept that.
D.J. Trumps "politics" are just the spike of the iceberg, there are many more tendencies (regarding publicly available bandwidth and such), I am not willing to accept just silently.
We have to stand up upfront, whenever possible.
@Telkitty Why do you even want iOS?? Sounds weird! MEOW!

user202362
@Shog9 I can't find the answer that I posted 3-4 years ago about Stackoverflow doing IPO sometimes down the track, did you 'accidentally' delete it?

user202362
@πάνταῥεῖ purely for scientific curiosity ...

@Shog9 posts angry meta post and ragequits. Actually no.... 'shog says it's ok. Ehhhhh. Whatever. Most of them are terrible and we'll close em for other reasons'

@Telkitty Ah, that's a valid reason of course. But iOS comes with some non disclosures natively :-P

user315433
Andy keeps getting CM endorsements (or semi-endorsements), and not getting elected. Not sure if there's a cause and effect.
- Elect Andy and we can finally resolve the comment flag issue once and for all. – Shog9♦ Nov 9 '15 at 21:09
- Andy's work around comment flags has been very impressive. I'm definitely curious to see what his thoughts on the mod queue are and if we could incorporate some of his work permanently on the site. Better identification of flags is something that would be very nice to have permanently. – bluefeet♦ Nov 7 '16 at 21:45

user315433
This is his attempt #4

eh, @Alex, I feel like someone reported a bug about the opposite of this recently... Happen to remember where?

user202362
@Shog9 thanks ... and wtf @Shadow @bart

I don't mind Stack Exchange makes money, just the opposite. No one should get me wrong about that.
But allowing software or repositories to decay because of short-term ROI isn't a very good idea.

2:34 AM
I think we all agree there
Things have gotten a bit weird lately, because we've really been trying to double-down on Jobs over the past couple of years
Something that's probably not mentioned much is that, while we make a decent amount on advertisements, we leave a lot of ad-space unsold - that is, there are a ton of folks who load pages on Stack Overflow where there's space reserved for ads and either see house ads (Jobs, ads for other sites, community / open-source ads, etc.) or just fewer ads because we haven't sold the "impression" to anyone.
Not like we couldn't, but... We kinda like holding out for ads that meet our standards and seem at least somewhat related to our topics.

user315433
Jul 5 at 20:21, by Walt
Why do I get invited to "Join the Stack Overflow Community" when visiting Help Center as a logged-in user? The huge banner with "New to Stack Overflow? blah blah blah" doesn't even have a dismiss button.

user315433
Not exactly "reported"

ah, thanks
I could've sworn someone reported it
anyway...
The original idea with Jobs was that we're not having to draw such a dramatic balance - it was intended to be symbiotic, like one of those birds that eats insects off of large mammals.
Problem is, selling Jobs isn't all that easy. The biggest market for 'em is sketchy folks who are neither hiring nor have any intention of giving up detailed / accurate information about the places they're trying to find employees for.

@Shog9 I've got some nice job invitations based upon that and digested all the "locusts" quite well ;-)

So we gotta convince the folks who are hiring to ignore the jackals, write decent job ads, and put 'em in front of people who will actually want to work for them.

2:41 AM
heh

@Shog9 Give em audits to ensure quality ...

@Shog9 most of 'my' industry here is super sketchy indian companies that basically only hire locals 1) ultra cheap 2) to meet quotas 3) seem to take a massive chunk of the normal going rate :(

And we're still hoping to make that work, but we're kinda having to face up to the fact that it's not gonna happen overnight or without a lot of effort - we essentially have to educate this huge population of people who, in spite of the fact that they're trying to hire programmers, don't know anything about programmers, programming, the market for programmers, their own company's tech stack...

(granted, I need to try to get my ass out of desktop support and this job for sanity's sake)

...much less how to find out what they don't know and communicate all of that in a way that sounds appealing.
(it's somewhat more involved than putting "ninja/rockstar" at the beginning of all your titles)

2:43 AM
lol

@JourneymanGeek Aww, india is still "special" regarding that :-P

So, yeah, huge massive education project for a market that doesn't know it needs to be educated and has this other group of snake-oil salesmen telling them that ignorance is bliss give us money we give you piles of CVs that we totally didn't make up / steal.

@πάνταῥεῖ I'm not in india. Those companies have cornered, and somewhat spoilt the computer support market here.

@Shog9 All of the indians are "ninjas/rockstars" dunno why they think so ...

Meanwhile, we need to fund both the sites and this growing software + sales + marketing org to support said education campaign.

2:45 AM
lol
@πάνταῥεῖ I'd much rather roadies ;)

Ideally, by actually making money from the work that's being done on one and/or the other.

user315433
Maybe start a blog with clickbaity titles like 5 Things You Should Never Say to a Developer?

Which is where things like SO Enterprise and Channels come into play: it's nice if we don't have to fund everything from Ads (because that can lead to bad incentives and we like our awesome ad salespeople with their high standards) or Jobs (because we're realizing it's a late-season crop and we're kinda still in April). And if we can make money by putting more work into supporting the product that everyone actually knows us for in the first place... Well, that can't be bad either.

@JourneymanGeek I'm looking into depth with the source code and programming environment i have to deal with, If you ask an average indian developer what a stack frame is, you'll earn some ambiguous head nodding.

lol
in 2 months, I'm basically the only guy who begins to understand the environment here

2:49 AM
@JourneymanGeek I've worked with victims of that sorta market. Not a lot of fun.

and.... I want to set it on fire and start afresh cause its so messed up
@Shog9 nope, the most fun ones are the ones that bait and switch

@Shog9 Yeah, Channels seems to be a useful concept. I'm considering to setup one with my team.

user315433
feels good about choosing math over programming back in the days

@Shog9 on the other hand, that's where the jobs are here. The place I work for now isn't like that but has its own set of quirks

@Alex I'm way more harsh with apprentices. I want to know if they have understood the basics (How does a CPU work?).

2:54 AM
@πάνταῥεῖ heh, I tend to consider those teachable moments
I worked with a vocationally trained tech who had no clue what a kensington lock is ._.
(did I mention those indian places have.... no real standards? ;p)

@JourneymanGeek You can expect experience with Turbo C++ probably :-P ...

lol
ODDLY ENOUGH

Seems to be a common standard in india.

one of the kids in chat complains about that a lot

user202362
rock stars ... I am sure stars are made of hydrogen and helium :p

2:57 AM
I loved turbo c++
20-some years ago
Even if you're cheap, gcc

user202362
if you are made of rock, at most you can be a planet ... so physically, rock star is not possible

@Telkitty Well, Helium is a side product IIRC after the star started burning. (Many other side products up to gold (AU), depending on it's initial mass).
@Shog9 Aww, sweet!
@Telkitty That's true to some extend. You still can become a neutron-star which is kinda "rock-solid" and dense.
Sorry, I'm a nerd from the bones :-P ...

user202362
s/from/to/

@Telkitty Sure!
^I don't like that very much though. Too kitschy :-(

user315433

Ideology: love is forever. Reality: most of us wouldn't be alive in a hundred years. Live for today, plan for tomorrow and only keep the good memories and whatever benefit you future from past such as experience, lessons etc.

@Telkitty In a single word: Karma.

1 hour later…
4:22 AM
@πάνταῥεῖ somehow, muse managed to go from "over the top dramatic" to... Uh... Whatever is at the downward slope after you go over the top.
Fortunately, we have Avatar to fill their former throne.

user202362
so how is niagara falls compared to yellow stone national park?

Less... Plain

So... what's the difference between voting for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, once again? Different values?
never mind...
I could vote someone for 3rd place choice and none for the rest though
... aaaand I just got Fanatic on MSE... didn't realize I wasn't that fan of it :|

4:47 AM
@SmokeDetector bump, the vanskeys spams (two of them) need more flags still

user315433
@Inc. Yes. Your vote initially goes to the highest-ranked candidate you selected, and gets redistributed from there.

user315433
E.g., if you give 3rd place to one of Anime candidate, and not mark the other at all, it's exactly the same as voting for that first candidate.

user315433
And in an election of 1 out of 2, there is no point in choosing 2nd anyway...

We're having another election? Why not just choose someone at random, we all know that we have no clue what we're doing so...

user315433
4:58 AM
We don't need clues, we need flag handlers.

Exactly, so anyone can do it.

user315433
But few are willing to, and we'd better elect those.

user315433
Posting a nomination is not a guarantee of that, unfortunately.

Well, getting elected isn't either it seems...

user315433
Who should we blame for that?

user315433
5:01 AM
!!/blame

@Alex It's hichris123's fault.

user315433
Knew it!

@Alex Were you going to say that no matter who smokey picked? Other than yourself of course

user315433
I think the users who grind through /review and do solid job there can be good mods, if they are not extreme on the delete everything / keep everything spectrum, and can avoid exploding in arguments.

user315433
What else to expect?

user315433
5:04 AM
@JamesENL Maybe, maybe not. Free will is an illusion. We'll never know what I'd do.

user202362
but we know that you will never be funny

user315433
I keep thinking a site like SO could use two tiers of sort-of moderators. We could have ... 100 "deputy mods" who can do things to posts with one click based on their content but don't have access to the private information about users. These could be rotating roles, and promotion/demotion to the deputy status would not be a very big deal like mod elections.

user315433
Like, someone has a gold tag badge and is considered generally sane by three other gold-badge holders. That should be enough.

@SmokeDetector link removed by suggested edit

@Alex Isn't that just Mjölnir though?

user315433
5:17 AM
Very much like it. And there is this idea of expanding Mjölnir to other close reasons. Nobody mentioned deletion yet (I think). But perhaps not all gold tag badge holders are generally sane.

Undoing vote in election is confusing, but I got it in the end...

user315433

So enigmatic.

user315433
Sure, we don't know what we are doing, but that's no big deal either.

user315433
Root cause analysis taken to the extreme.

user315433

Ah, that ain't an answer. I stand by my decision. Even if it means you will now put me on your hit list.

user202362
@Bart I don't put anyone on my hit list, I am too lazy. With that said, I am such an oracle though - the prospect of SO IPO, of SO selling programmers (career), about Microsoft buying site that sells people (linkedin). It's almost like a crystal that tells the future! </shameless_self_promotion>

@Telkitty we need that coffee next week! :) I've nominated myself for mod on SO

user202362

I just texted you :)

Oh boy, Telkitty and Yvette meetup. Should we be concerned?

@Bart yes - we are planning a take over of the network :D

I actually drove past here parents house twice the other day

9:06 AM
Hmm... no drama during the recent election weeks...

9:23 AM
@Inc. we had a short one with the joke nomination ...

Ooh, seems we have some decent nominations already
Good

refreshes election page What are you talking about?
This is so much fun: Call API StoreDocument, returns OK. Document not stored. WTF?
Call again, returns OK, Document stored. I don't mind intermittent failures but please return me an error in that case ....

9:40 AM
@rene it is missing your nomination, true.

@Bart hmm it is missing many nominations. But I doubt if rene elected, we may miss him here.

@Bart They can't handle my bluntness ... and you know it ... ;)

We need a new moderator everybody complains about all the time

If I ever run that will be in my nomination post :D

But still NAA

@cazc_941 given my past results when trying to keep plants alive, that would result in rather depressing music

@Bart Hue
Apparently it's a project by Data Garden
who I only remember as being the label that you could order a 'plantable album' from, which was a big sheet with the cover art made from seed paper with a download code on the back
Pretty neat

:-)
w00t!

😀

which site?

Ah!
(Has no idea if SO does the 100k swag)

I sure hope it does :-) I am banking on it ;-P
idk who to ask lol

1:58 PM
oh, someone will be in touch
Just make sure the email address in your profile is valid

user315433
Now I'm sad we are only electing 2 mods. The pool is much more impressive than in 2016.

user315433
When a candidate draws this kind of comments, I take it as -1 to the candidate.

2:23 PM
@Alex hmm, is that true? I did notice the pattern, and responded as such, didn't link it directly to a negative thing. Maybe it is a cultural thing, being an Asian candidate?

lol. Maaaybe
or he's just got a lot of people he knows? ;p

@cazc_941 hah, that's pretty cool

user315433
SO has its own culture, which discourages such behavior in comments.

user315433
So if a candidate's support comes from outside of it, that looks like a counterculture candidate.

Careful with the offensive links @Inc.

2:35 PM
Relax, I'm not from Japan :)

@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA I am waiting for the 1M party

@SagarV Theres a party?!?!

I wanna go!
@SagarV who is zat? skeet?

@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA yup in 1 or 2 months
@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA I can't see a reason for the doubt

2:36 PM
@SagarV lol

he have more silver badges than my total reputation lol

@SagarV he has more answers too
33,832 Answers.

yes

@Inc. hahaha, and that actually gets flagged. gg wp

2:38 PM
sayonara ;(

he have more tag score than many users in his top tag
189,931
if the 200 rep cap is not there, he will get 18,99,310 rep from the top tag itself

So just for clarity, the link I was commenting on was actually a link to stackoverflow.com. Nothing offensive. Just me being hilarious as always. HILARIOUS I TELL YOU.

!!blame jeff Atwood for the rep cap
@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA poor jon

@Bart lol haha

@SagarV "poor" "jon"
aka IBM robot

2:40 PM
So you're saying Jon is actually Watson?

@Bart No.... Watson is Jon.
Duh.
Not all Jons are Watson
Its a rhombus / square situation

@Alex they are just hopeful for mod...
which, doesn't really change anything, except supporters

2:59 PM
Geez, it's really a "good luck" fest in the nomination comments.

Good luck @Bart

I didn't nominate yet. So no good luck for me

@Bart nominate and make use of the good luck

Still, good luck @Bart
Why do you hate good luck?!

I don't hate good luck. I hate it as a repeated statement below nominations.

3:06 PM
so bad luck then?

@Bart good luck stopping people from saying those
@bluefeet I was thinking we should encourage telling "nice try" to some candidates

Maybe I should run for mod, so I can just ban such users during the next election.

And if they can't take "nice try" comments well, they won't take people invoking Godwin law well in a million years
@Bart good luck filling the nomination post

Dec 6 '14 at 18:04, by Bart
How about we just lock users in a room and hurl insults and Nazi references at them. If they snap in any way, they are dismissed.

@bluefeet is there any party on Stack Overflow?

@rene I can just bribe you guys, so I'm safe

Can you? Can you really?

Yes I can!

user315433
Candidates so far. I made the review-count display more granular, it now rounds the decimal log of the number of reviews to the nearest half-integer.

user315433
One problem with review count is that the "younger" candidates like Tiny, Alexander, Yvette or Baum didn't have as much time to build it up.

Who is that red dot? And I count 11 nominations and only 10 bubbles?

user315433
@rene The red dot is that 11th candidate, CS too small for the name to fit.

user315433
I take back the remark about younger candidates; NathanOliver is only a member since December 2014 but is 3rd in review count.

4:27 PM
I still count 10 bubbles ... including the red one ...

user315433
Oops, I'll add Yvette ASAP.

So either I need glasses @Bart or a new monitor ...
@Alex Oh, you're gender biased ;)

user315433

user315433
Yvette has the most balanced voting record among the candidates.

Nice!

@Bart it gets a bit too much the feel of vriendjes politiek ... uncomfortable it is ...

user315433
Just kidding, those answers look good.

user315433
But I'm not fond of the blog post promoting the answering <-> my product connection.

user315433
And I only see 53 answers by that user with links to ipinfo.io, out of 119 total

user315433
Plus, a bunch of answers are to questions directly asking about ipinfo.io

I think his strategy may have come full circle, since the blog post has drawn my attention towards the original SO questions.

@rene as long as you don't collude with ru.so, you're fine

awesome license ...

5:10 PM
The "I ignore the rules so you don't have to" license.

I'm having problems with SE chat
Chat.SO works fine. As does chat.MSE, obviously

@M.A.R. no repro

5:31 PM
@rene even on IE 5?

Oh, I didn't check, hold on ..

6:08 PM
Where do you even find IE5 at this point?
We just had a vendor drop support for anything below IE11. I applauded... even as we started receiving complaints.

@canon well, I think you can get there by starting with Win95 or so and then upgrade until you have that version magically ...

I remember windows 95. I think I was like... 13? My God, it's been 22 years.

Win95 is a few years back yes

What's WhatsApp? — Shog9 ♦ 4 mins ago

@Shog just curious, why did you waste your time with that WhatsApp "question"? It's pure crap no matter how you look at that.

Replace comments with chat, imo. Imagine the chaos.

@canon I skipped it... moved from DOS to Windows98... then skipped again and next was XP.

@Alex wonder how the chart looked last time around (if it existed) with deceze's 9k votes.

@canon hmm... what?
@Alex well, @Yve is balanced. :)

@ShadowWizard I went from DOS -> Windows 3.1 --> Windows 95 --> Windows 98 --> Windows XP --> SUSE --> Debian --> Windows Vista --> Windows 7 --> Windows 8.1 --> CentOS --> Windows 10

7:08 PM
SUSE?
checking
oh, Linux
I used unix OS only while in univercity, it was a must for some classes.

@ShadowWizard pretty much

@canon well, you didn't miss much, lol

I missed CEMENT

@canon what's that? Couldn't find anything about it.

On suggested edit screen, tag usage guidance is still called "tag wiki excerpt".

@BhargavRao Like this

@Alex Hah, as expected. Bit surprised to see the edits axis, but the votes axis line up perfectly.
Thanks for that.

Maybe we could do a "scales of justice" thing for the review icon. image.flaticon.com/icons/svg/1/1430.svg
Or a faceless white wig + gavel...

@ShadowWizard half hoping there was a clever idea there somewhere and the author just forgot to write it down.
As usual, I was disappointed.
