@Elephant morning!

@rene morning!

Let me make breakfast first and coffee, lots of it ...

Its scientifically proven complaining about a room being quiet is the best way to make it less quiet

currently I have 4 phones, 1 tablet, 1 desktop and 1 laptop on/under my desk

most of them are fairly old devices, lol

7:23 AM
@JourneymanGeek who did you disagree with? ;)

hmm.
No one, yet. But the day is still young.

@JourneymanGeek no office today?

Its sunday
I apparently need to be in early on monday tho ._.

@JourneymanGeek So?

I don't work sundays
;p

7:25 AM
@JourneymanGeek why not? :(

Cause clearly I do not love my job enough.

@JourneymanGeek so if you love your job you'll also work on Sunday?

hm. Plausibly!

You ever did that?

Or they wouldn't expect me to anyway!

7:28 AM
You had few other jobs in the past, no?

Yeah, but typically it was never needed.

I'd totally have done it for job -2, though they would never ask, my boss was a nice guy

Suppose you work on Sunday, you get extra money for that?

hmm, yeah
Money would be good
but no, we don't do OT

7:30 AM
Same here for working on Saturday, but not Friday

You guys have a different weekend no?

Yeah, Friday-Saturday is the weekend here.
And actually working on Saturday is forbidden by law.

Yeah, same idea then, but I'd suppose you guys totally wouldn't work saturday

Law that is not enforced though.

Sunday has no special meaning for me ;p
Other than the dog needing to go to the dog park ;)

7:31 AM
lol
Well, I bought new shoes yesterday, so people here DO work on Saturday.... but most don't. :)

After 22 years I switched from New Balance to different brand.

I'd work sat/sun if I was working a sensible shift, or I had a different weekend
(or It was something simple/fun I guess ;p)

@Bart @Derpy got more starred messages than you in the Wall, you should fix that.

user202362
I buy shoes of all brands

user202362
7:34 AM
no brand loyalty here

@Telkitty how you choose them? Just price?

@ShadowWizard I tend to favour new balance for running shoes cause they have my 11ee.

It was just absurd, New Balance cost DOUBLE than the other brand, which is as good.
(800 vs. 400 NIS)

user202362
value for money ... and to suit my need

@JourneymanGeek for running I'd stick with them, but I don't run, only walk.

7:35 AM
ah
>_>

So you do jogging? @Journeyman

I owned a pair of crocs when I was at the casino
Walked a shitload
naw, mostly walking

Someone was like "Why are you wearing granpa shoes?"
but I was walking like 10k steps a day

user202362
sometimes I buy stuff from more expensive local stores on purpose - to keep the competition going, don't want smaller neighbourhood stores collapse ...

7:47 AM
@Telkitty very heroic
@JourneymanGeek so crocs are best for walking?

@ShadowWizard they're oddly comfortable.

Never tried actually

don't go for the typical ones tho, I bought a pair of mocs
soooo goooood

user202362
for some reasons, I went to a sports stores and asked for a good pair of jogging shoes best for knees a few years ago, they kept on recommending Asics

user202362
then I bought a few other brands like Brooks & new balance

user202362
7:57 AM
now my current two pairs are fila, only because I went to a fila store 2 months ago

user202362
I can't tell the difference between jogging shoes brands, but new balance is not my favourite

@Telkitty yeah Asics are considered the best from what I heard, and most expensive too.
(maybe just here though)
And Fila the opposite

user202362
I like my fila shoes, they are pretty :p

user202362
My favourite shoes is my hiking boots

user202362
pure leather

user202362
8:03 AM
heavy

user202362
and very enduring

user202362
water proof

@Telkitty pretty but not good for the feet... I did try some other brands yesterday before buying, the really cheap brands were simply not comfortable.

user202362
I heard from someone that leather hiking boots can last for 10-20 years

@ShadowWizard maybe my days here are done. Tavern on the Derpy

8:07 AM
@Telkitty 10 yes, 20 not. I bought a pair in Italy when I was 21... had to throw them away something like 5 years ago, so 12 years for me. And I used them rarely, not often.
@Bart now it's a draw

Its also how you care for it
I actually rather like my army boots
Tend to replace em every 2 years or so

@JourneymanGeek army?? You go to the army on regular basis?

@ShadowWizard annually

Army shoes here are the worst... uncomfortable, cause pain in the heels... nightmare.

Our system is vaguely inspired by (that is to say we copied, and adjusted...) the israeli system
lol
Do you guys use the leather or the leather and goretex ones?

8:12 AM
@JourneymanGeek lol... so you served full three years too?

Proper Goretex ones were awesome (but no longer made), we switched companies
2.5, nowadays its 2.

@JourneymanGeek gor what??

+ one week reservist per year

that's what I got ^

@ShadowWizard brand - american company that made a PTFE material that most companies do
ewww
Yeah, we used to have those
phased those out

8:14 AM
@JourneymanGeek yeah... really no idea why your country need a strong army??
For us it's matter of life or death... literally.
Weak army = no more Israel, simple as that.

@ShadowWizard er... cause we basically have no local allies...
and our neighbours occationally are less than friendly

@JourneymanGeek but enemies?

hmm
Not at the moment. ;p
I donno man

You really got countries that want to eliminate you as a country?

I'm not important enough to know these things

8:15 AM
lol

nope
Not at the moment

So you have strong-ish army "just in case"? Nice... ;)

more or less
Oh, also is very good for our arms exports.

@JourneymanGeek heh, here one week is the minimum, most do 2-3 weeks, many do 4-8 and even more. (usually the officers.)

@ShadowWizard one week's minimum for a "major" callup

8:17 AM
@JourneymanGeek not here... maybe special forces get the good shoes, dunno...

What do you do in the army service? @Journeyman
You get a weapon?

Oddly enough, not the dog unit.
I know which end to point towards the enemy
but I was basically in stores, in a transport platoon...

@JourneymanGeek lol, here dog units are considered VIP, very special forces, same line with Commando. (they ARE commando, but with dogs helping them.)

Still at the same unit. We don't have a transport platoon.
@ShadowWizard the fact that I wasn't in the dog unit is an old running joke ;p
Naw, we have a seperate dog unit. Next door to the military prison unit

8:20 AM
but there's bunker inside a house
(well, not really bunker, but)

@JourneymanGeek oh. So you help transport stuff?

@Elephant huh? What house?
You also in army? @Elephant

Transport unit = the boring vehicles that make sure our cool vehicles have bullets and the people who drive em food ;p

@ShadowWizard there's a safety room inside housing unit in SG, but no, I'm not in army

8:21 AM
@JourneymanGeek I know, used to escort those people many times... usually nice people. ;)
(in the field a "real" solider have to escort every vehicle to protect it in case something happens)

oh
We usually have a driver + a vehicle commander
My real purpose at my unit was "We need to send someone to retake basic military training. Geek failed, lets send geek instead of a driver!"

@JourneymanGeek hmm... not sure it's called "vehicle commander" here as well, as I was never a commander of anything.

I'm so happy we no longer had conscription when I was at that age. I would not have done well in the army :D

@JourneymanGeek ROFL!

@ShadowWizard I was often of a lower rank than the driver ;p
@Bart I failed basic thrice
then they changed the rules so its easier to pass ;)

8:24 AM
@JourneymanGeek lol... here they're usually the lowest rank already.... ;)

Hahaha

Oh, sometimes we had a 1st sg with me tagging along
I was basically a pte, then a cpl. Most drivers were pte -> lcp.

what's my rank? let's see...

I hope I don't get CFC. Its an odd rank. Also, no one would ever accuse me of having class.
Oh! I even have a medal.

8:26 AM
._.
Forester, first class?

Sgt.

@JourneymanGeek nice! I got few too, though no idea where I stashed them... :/

ours are three chevrons...
@ShadowWizard 5 year service medal. I was like "Oh, I'll get one next... OH WAIT, WHAT? "

@Elephant sergeant first class
That leaf adds the "first class" ;)

8:28 AM
It sure does. I saw those 3 stripes and was like "pffff", but then I saw that leaf and thought "he really is a wizard"

Google Translate didn't work hard enough :/

@JourneymanGeek I got for "taking part" in, well, "wars".
Quotes because it's not what you think.

meh. I got mine for turning up

I even got best storeman a few back

8:29 AM
@Elephant lol what did you translate?

One of the storemen didn't turn up, the other was sick most of the time...
ahh, @ShadowWizard our 1sg rank is <<>>> turned 90 degrees clockwise

@JourneymanGeek nice!

האם התכוונתם ל......
got that page when reverse searching that image

@Elephant yup that's the rank... how did you get it?
oh

oh, apparently I didn't read the first point: first sergeant :)

8:31 AM
Actually, technically I'm a "chief sergeant", but not really, never even got the ranks for it.

@ShadowWizard so 2 ranks, and you get busted up to a warrant? ;p

:D
Oh wait, I was a commander! Let me see if it can be translated...
buh can't find
Anyway, I was the "commander" of such a vehicle back in the day:

0_0
Thats... adorable

It's a cool vehicle!
I was a driver for 1.5 years, then commander for the rest of my service.

We use these en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bronco_All_Terrain_Tracked_Carrier in roughly the same role
ugly things. The british name for their examples fits it better.

8:36 AM
סרן
(I don't know what I pasted)

@JourneymanGeek heh, very similar! :)
@Elephant officer rank... how you got it?

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) has a unique rank structure. Because the IDF is an integrated force, ranks are the same in all services (there is no differentiation between army, navy, air force, etc.) The ranks are derived from those of the paramilitary Haganah developed in the Mandate period to protect the Yishuv. This origin is reflected in the slightly compacted rank structure; for instance, the Chief of Staff (rosh ha'mate ha'klali, or ramatkal) is seemingly only equivalent to a lieutenant general in other militaries. == Current ranks == Officers (ktzinim): Volunteers who have completed the...

@ShadowWizard actually... that reminds us of our 'new' ,minesweeper

@JourneymanGeek in the army, everything is ugly. It's by design. ;)

Its uglier than most!
And I actually think our modded leopard 2s are sleek for mobile brick walls

8:38 AM
I felt ugly during my whole service, always dirty, and it always just felt fine. lol

I got shouted at for taking a picture of a military vehicle in Singapore, when they were doing one of their national day practice runs :D

This is our leopard varient
@Bart ._.

@Elephant well, it says below the Hebrew word:
@Bart lol... secret vehicle?
@JourneymanGeek nice! Big gun! ;)
But my gun was bigger. :P

lol
almost

8:42 AM
Nah, nothing special. I think the soldiers just didn't really appreciate it. Kinda strange with the TV crews doing the same, but oh well :D

@Bart the unit that does NDP preperation is usually stressed out as f***

It looked like it. I was amazed that they basically do the whole thing far before the actual NDP

@ShadowWizard big gun

Artist performances and all

8:44 AM
@Bart twice
in fact a lot of the footage in the TV screens on venue are from the rehearsals

Hahaha

It could be the solution to all armed conflicts. Do a rehearsal first to learn that you don't like the outcome and then give up on the real thing.

It's why I never joined the army. I knew that wouldn't do anyone any favours. :p

Hi!

hi!

user287113
I would like to create a dedicated chat room to discuss topics related to compilers/interpreters, compilers' construction and, eventually, programming languages' concepts needed to understand theories behind compilers. Which website do you think is the best to create this chat room?

user287113
I thought about the cs.stackexchange.com or just Stack Overflow, but I'm not sure

Sounds like SO stuff
but not sure
Try asking in MSO

user287113
12:28 PM
Well, it isn't just about implementing compilers, it's also about the theories behind them, that's why I also thought that cs.stackexchange.com would be appropriate

@nbro yeah, good question... maybe both, it's only chat after all.

just a note: chat domains are different between SO and other sites

user287113
yeah, you made me notice that last time

so, the visibility might affect that

12:30 PM
Each will get different audience

that also dosen't entirely feel like something that would work that well for chat, unless you had a audience already on hand
and most good chat is mostly 'off topic' IMO

user287113
Why wouldn't that work as a chat? The audience is whoever is interested in those topics.

@JourneymanGeek well there are many SO rooms dedicated to specific programming things
@nbro think he means people won't easily find it.
And keep in mind after two weeks without activity, the room will auto freeze.

user287113
I personally think it's a good think to have dedicated chats for specific topics since it's a way to group people that interested in the same stuff so that to share new ideas. Eventually, it's also a way to help in real-time newbies.

@nbro as for newbies not really, as most won't have 20 rep thus can't chat.

user287113
12:39 PM
@ShadowWizard What do you mean exactly by auto freeze?

@ShadowWizard @nbro more that its a deep topic, or series of topics

user287113
@ShadowWizard Well, I think many newbies have more than 20 of rep

> Rooms worth retaining which are inactive for 14 days will be frozen. Frozen rooms do not allow any new messages to be sent, and are not shown in the default room list to prevent cluttering the rooms interface.

user287113
Ok

@JourneymanGeek that's much more similar to what I have, found it now: he.wikipedia.org/wiki/…
It's not really an image so can't onebox

12:44 PM
@ShadowWizard we looked at the M109
then built our own

I have a picture somewhere of my actual gun firing at real time, the rocket isn't visible but the fire is visible... will try to find it. :)

I had it framed in my room when I was younger lol
@JourneymanGeek good for you! Israel has a deal with USA, we are kind of forced to buy weapons from USA.
(and get $1B bonus every year for that.)

user287113
@ShadowWizard But what should I do, if after a chat has been frozen, now I have grouped the sufficient number of people to make the community of that chat active enough?

@ShadowWizard apparently the M109 is too heavy

12:47 PM
@JourneymanGeek heavy?? Of course it is, it's a mobile huge gun....
Though no armor at all.
Even a simple bullet can destroy it.
@nbro just remember to post in the room once in a while and it won't be frozen.
If it's already frozen, you can ask a moderator to unfreeze it.

The Goliath tracked mine - complete German name: Leichter Ladungsträger Goliath (Sd.Kfz. 302/303a/303b) - was a remote controlled German-engineered demolition vehicle, also known as the beetle tank to the Allies. Employed by the Wehrmacht during World War II. It carried 60 or 100 kilograms (130 or 220 lb) of high explosives, depending on the model, and was intended to be used for multiple purposes, such as destroying tanks, disrupting dense infantry formations, and demolition of buildings and bridges. == Development and use == In late 1940, after recovering the prototype of a miniature tracked...

user287113
btw, how do I know if I can post something on a chat room? For example, I see people posting different things which aren't really on topic for that chat room, but once I posted something on the chat room for C++, which was only a link to another chat room I had created for Scala, they banned me for 30 minutes from chatting...wtf?

user202362
Lounge is membership based

user287113
People in chats tend to act more opinion-based, even moderators, and that's a bad thing!!!

user202362
like most other real life communities

user287113
12:55 PM
But SE is, in theory, known to deviate from that tendency

user202362
the more elite a community is, the more likely they will kick you out for little reasons

@nbro you can always start with asking but with the Lounge you picked one of the weirdest room there is, at least on SO.
I would never just drop in and link to stuf

user287113
Well, they also post things which aren't related to C++...

user287113
That ban was, IMHO, completely opinion-based...

user287113
It was like: we don't like you, so get the f out of here!

user202362
12:57 PM
it is, like I said, it's membership based, unless you sound like a C++ pro, which I doubt you are, you can not just go in and link stuff

user202362
people there need to accept you

user202362
then you can link random stuff

@nbro the point is : that room isn't about C++ ...

user202362
the room is

@nbro don't barge into rooms you're not part of yet and advertise things, it won't end well. It's no different than spam.

12:58 PM
meh
@Telkitty well, yeah, indeed. Once you're accepted.

user287113
@Telkitty Well, I'm not a C++ pro, but I'm proficient with it. You should not judge my skills from my comments or from my profile ;)
