Feature request + network profile = an exercise in futility

I hear futility is great for resistance training.

@JonEricson Yeah that's the first place I checked.
I also thought about posting a feature request. Then came to the same conclusion.

hey everyone. a couple days ago I thought I'd have a crack at watching the review queue, and it's kind of fun. I think I dived in a bit too readily without reading the instructions first, and I can't flag things anymore. I /think/ I have a better idea of what all the buttons (flagging, commenting, simply marking as "needs editing", or even just saying "this is okay") are for now... so do I just wait a bit to be able to flag again? or is there somewhere I can discuss what I flagged incorrectly?
the offending flags: http://stackoverflow.com/users/flag-summary/3229684?showDeclined=true

I'm totally new to all of this :) (I'm not sure if this is the right room to ask this in either)

@i336_ What do you mean you can't flag things? What do you see?

1:20 AM
@JonEricson oh, woops, wrong page link. stackoverflow.com/users/flag-summary/3229684 shows me "You are currently banned from flagging - view flags declined in the last 7 days"

@i336_ Ah. I see. Just wait out the ban. And be a bi more careful next time.

sure thing, thanks. now to see how long it lasts. (it's okay.)
and I actually read the post-flagging howto (stackoverflow.com/help/privileges/flag-posts) now :) which was helpful

Specifically, flagging incorrect information is usually gonna be declined; downvote, edit, comment, post opposing answers instead.

user202362
I have a problem ... checking, clicking, I read both as chicken :'(

@Shog9 Right. I think I misunderstood the "needs moderator review" as the "other" or "not specified here" bit bucket. I didn't realize they went into a high-priority queue TIL

@ShadowWizard No, I knew it already, I just had to make a joke because why not
Elephants are large mammals of the family Elephantidae and the order Proboscidea. Three species are recognised, the African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana), the African forest elephant (L. cyclotis), and the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus). Elephants are scattered throughout sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. Elephantidae is the only surviving family of the order Proboscidea; other, now extinct, members of the order include deinotheres, gomphotheres, mammoths, and mastodons. Male African elephants are the largest extant terrestrial animals and can reach a height of 4 m (13...

arielnmzI (accidentally) started downloading a 350 MB file from Google Chrome and I can't find the option to stop it, the downloads app just shows the files that have already finished but not the downloads in progress. The notification on my top bar just opens the downloads app.

Wonder what's so special about "puck"? Is it because it's almost like "puke"? Or the reason for changing, that "p" can easily become "f"? :P

It's the latter.

The possibility for vandalism in US arcades.

Yeah, kids would totally do that

And I can confirm: I would definitely vandalize one of those.

1:46 PM
lol

Plus that nose...

The amount of "No Smoking" signs in buses that I saw changed to "Do Smoke" (in Hebrew it's matter of erasing the first word) is amazing.

That Skeptics question was funny, it came out of a comment conversation at english.stackexchange.com/a/381499/55308 and got unexpectedly popular.
Lol

@JasonC nose?

My favorite was, after I graduated high school me and some friends took a trip down to the beaches in North Carolina, and there was a boardwalk with some shops.
One of the shops was called "Try My Nuts" (it was like, peanuts and stuff), and there were these little wooden signs all over the boardwalk with names of shops pointing to where they were.
So we obviously decided to steal one of the "Try My Nuts" signs.
But when we went up to one of the sign posts, all of the signs were attached with little ropes hanging off the pole, but the "Try My Nuts" sign was bolted on with like 8 one-way screws.
Uh... the end.
It made me laugh though.
(We didn't get the sign)
There was another place, I don't remember where, some neighborhood named "Tuckahoe" with a big fancy sign in front of it, and behind the sign was a can of paint, and the "T" clearly had like 30 layers of paint on it correcting all the times people changed it to an "F".

1:54 PM
@JasonC perhaps they should just give in and officially rename the neighbourhood

I remember having that same thought, lol.

something like this ^

@ShadowWizard Haha, it's too easy.

Do all the Hebrew "no smoking" signs have "please"?

1:55 PM
And nobody ever thought to change it

The "No Smoking" that's usually in English sadly only changes to "Smoking", which isn't a command any more.

@JasonC nope, most don't

@ShadowWizard What is the first word on that sign? I don't see it in the vandalized version.

But if you remove the first word "אסור" you make it into just "Smoke", which is less obvious and funny. ;)

Lol
Ah google says "forbidden"

1:57 PM
@JasonC I know, it's just funny in Hebrew :D
@JasonC try "אסור לעשן כאן"

in Shadow's Den, 10 secs ago, by FOX 9000
@ShadowWizard [Powered by Yandex Translate] You can't smoke here.
90% correct ^
(אסור in this context is more like "you are not allowed to")
As can't is more like technically can't which isn't correct. ;)

@ShadowWizard I'm enjoying removing random letters from that in google translate and looking at the weird results, lol

lol, you saw what @M.A.R. did the other day?

RTL is making backspace confusing though
No I didn't
What does "אסור לשן כאן" mean?
"It is forbidden to sleep here?" lol

2:01 PM
@JasonC LOL
@JasonC the word "לשן" means "to the tooth". "לשון" means tongue. "לישון" means sleep or sleeping.
In Hebrew removing vowels often change the whole meaning of the word. :D

"אסור לשון כאן"?

"No tongue here!"

Seems like an easy change, lol
In that pac man thread I learned the possibilities for puns in Japanese are pretty mind boggling
@JasonC ぱくぱく is pakupaku, while パクパクis pakupaku using the alphabet that's used to spell words borrowed from foreign languages (this is not a joke). So パックマン (Pakkuman) is written as a word that comes from a foreign language and is indeed how one spells "Puckman" in Japanese.. — Peter yesterday
@Peter Ahhh, I think I understand now: the indication that it is a transliterated word gives it the double-meaning of both the native concept and the foreign one, hence the pun. If I've got that right, it sounds like Japanese opens up a whole new world of great puns. The possibilities for bilingual dad jokes are truly terrifying. — Jason C yesterday
I can't decide if English is boring, or if I'm just used to it. I mean it does have a lot of "one letter changes the meaning" opportunities, I suppose.
Or I might just be used to Latin alphabets.

@JasonC the right to fart in the Den any time you want. :P

Done

2:12 PM
lol you're quick :D
OMG that's hilarious!!!!!

@ShadowWizard Are מ and ם the same letters?
@ShadowWizard Lol wow

@JasonC yes, מ becomes ם when it's the last letter in a word.

So on the keyboard you've got... all 22 letters + the 5 final forms (according to wikipedia)?

This happens with some other letters: פ becomes ף
כ becomes ך
נ becomes ן
צ becomes ץ
מ becomes ם
@JasonC yup. And double that, as we got two kinds of writing.

I kind of want to learn Hebrew just to blow minds in the Jewish neighborhoods around here.

2:18 PM
"Formal" and "unformal"

They're very exclusive neighborhoods, lol.

Each with its own set of letters.

Oh interesting
Is there a 1:1 correspondence between letters? Like a "formal shift" key on the keyboard or something?

@JasonC hehe, if they're orthodox better learn Yidish
@JasonC what do you mean? English/Hebrew keyboard?

Oh!

2:20 PM
oh, saw the ping and forgot

They must be speaking yiddish.

@JasonC no need to, got actual keyboard with both English and Hebrew, pressing ALT+SHIFT to switch languages

Wait

@JasonC yup, makes sense. For Orthodox Jews, Hebrew is used mainly for prayers, not day-to-day talk, as it's considered holy.

Are the alphabets the same?
Yiddish looks like it has a lot of... accenty variations of letters like אָ?

2:22 PM
@JasonC in Yidish? Yes, but totally different words, grammar, etc. I don't know Yidish myself.
@JasonC yeah, you mean nikkud?
In Hebrew orthography, niqqud or nikkud (Hebrew: נִקּוּד, Modern nikud, Tiberian niqqûḏ; "dotting, pointing" or Hebrew: נְקֻדּוֹת, Modern nekudot, Tiberian nəquddôṯ; "dots") is a system of diacritical signs used to represent vowels or distinguish between alternative pronunciations of letters of the Hebrew alphabet. Several such diacritical systems were developed in the Early Middle Ages. The most widespread system, and the only one still used to a significant degree today, was created by the Masoretes of Tiberias in the second half of the first millennium AD in the Land of Israel (see Masoretic...

Yeah, see, for me, my only reference point is the alphabet, because I can see the written language everywhere around here.
Where I was leading with my questions was whether or not I could tell if it was Yiddish or Hebrew just by looking given that I can't interpret the letters themselves. Answer: Not really.

@JasonC well, if Yiddish it will probably make little sense to me too. @Mithrandir you know Yiddish? ;)

@ShadowWizard Yeah looks like that's what I meant

@JasonC yup, this adds a layer of complexity to the language...

Is that Hebrew or Yiddish?

2:25 PM
@JasonC Yiddish, but with some Hebrew actual words...

(That's from a neighborhood around here)

so I can read and understand most of it
Yeshiva (/jəˈʃiːvɑː/; Hebrew: ישיבה‎, lit. "sitting"; pl. ישיבות‎, yeshivot or yeshivos) is a Jewish institution that focuses on the study of traditional religious texts, primarily the Talmud and Torah study. Study is usually done through daily shiurim (lectures or classes) and in study pairs called ḥavrutas (Aramaic for "friendship" or "companionship"). Ḥavruta-style learning is one of the unique features of the yeshiva. In the United States and Israel, the different levels of yeshiva education have different names. In the United States, elementary-school students are enrolled in a yeshiva, post...
It's a bus of Yeshiva's students
Heh, you better not mess with Hebrew around them. ;)

Oh I know that word
I see it on school building sometimes
Haha.

yup, that's a school. :)
@Jason but how you ended up living in Orthodox Jews neighborhood? By chance?

@ShadowWizard I think it would be like youtu.be/lLXaRtc1f4I?t=204, but with bigger hats, and I wouldn't be nearly as successful as Neo.
@ShadowWizard It's NYC. There's a huge Orthodox Jewish population here.
Plus a lot of the properties in Brooklyn are Jewish-owned, and so you tend to see the more popular neighborhoods spring up around Jewish neighborhoods.

2:31 PM
@JasonC LOL... haha... yeah they can become violent when you push them too much :D
These days they make tons of uproar in Israel because the government is trying to force them to join the army.
So far they only block roads, but likely it will become fully violent soon.

Oh

@JasonC yup. Probably government will take a step back as they always do in those cases, and change the law.

Re: NYC - There's a pretty deep stereotype of the quintessential "Hasidic landord" here, which is evidence of how heavy Jewish influence is in NYC. I'm not sure what the history is or why there's such a huge Jewish population here.
Well it's NYC, there's a huge population of everybody, I guess.
In my old neighborhood I lived between the churches/temples/mosques/synagogues for like 8 different religions.

@Mithrandir heh, sure. Not now anyway. :)
@Fawad it was the left-over, what you get in the bottom. nobody can really drink it...

2:53 PM
@ShadowWizard this may help you

lol
Still, no use as there was no liquid.
Hard to explain, it was cold coffee with lots of sugar (not my own coffee), so some of it didn't melt. when the liquid was finished, the sugar and coffee that didn't melt made a sticky mess in the bottom of the cup. And the poor fly got stuck in there. :D
Should have made a pic.

@JasonC considering it even overrides the final boss theme, Trombe can be considered the perfect reply to any music-related message.
anyway, have to go for now. Later.
(also, as a side notice... @Elephant reminded me why I avoid the anime chat room)

@Derpy well, I don't join their chat room either ;)

Hm, looks like a fine day for sharing angry stories of suspensions past.

user315433
I don't have anything notable to share yet. Working on it.

Funny, because I was also thinking of posting a topic about suspension.

An epitome of a standard pre-calculus / trigonometry problem.

Seems my mind is tricking me.. I thought I've read a post on Quora asking "Why [a quora user] is suspended" with many answers that are sympathizing the suspended user. OTOH, if such post is posted on meta sites...

5:35 PM
The post begs the question, what % of users have had a suspension. For accuracy, lets remove users who have less than 50 reputation to try to ignore the 1 rep spam bot stuff. I bet its roughly .1%.
By comparison, 2% of the US population has been placed in a prison at some point in their user history.

"Stack Exchange: not as f'd up as the United States" could be the site's tagline

I suspect the incident you are referring to is the one you wrote about on The Workplace meta? I'd be happy to answer that question with the full text of the mod message. I'm also happy to discuss the process I took in evaluating your case at the time. — Jon Ericson ♦ 14 mins ago

@TravisJ 8821 users have been suspended at least once on Stack Overflow. This excludes deleted users, and includes unregistered users.
At this moment, select count(*) from Users returns 6943807
So, your guess is pretty close.
@Elephant they have been, and occasionally garner sympathy.

Q: Why was BalusC temporarily suspended from SO?

Mike BraunI hope this is the right place to ask this, but I was just browsing the JSF tag and saw BalusC, one of SO's top users, was banned. See http://stackoverflow.com/users/157882/balusc Now I looked at the rules in the provided link at http://blog.stackoverflow.com/2009/04/a-day-in-the-penalty-box ...

@TravisJ I'm looking into posting an answer will a variety of stats that people have asked for. In particular, people want to know how often formally-suspended people come back to be productive members rather than just disappear (or get a new account).

I did have to consider for a moment if a formal suspension is something different from a regular one.

Better?

@JonEricson that would be interesting. I notice you have a close vote on the Q

A: Why don't we keep public records of suspensions?

Shog9Dukeling raises an interesting question: So is that 10% of suspensions in general or 10% of users who actively continued using their accounts post-suspension? It's approximately 10% of users whose suspensions ended who were later suspended. Defining "actively continued using their account...

I ran a quick check - turns out, all suspended users have 1 rep. — Shog9 ♦ 42 secs ago
