@JourneymanGeek yep
why I've never gotten one.
its less the money than needing a certain amount of emotional investment and readyness for it
But at this point, we had a dog, and he was too damned cute to adopt out
Well, lucky puppy, in different family it would have been thrown to the street. :/
so... we kept him ;p
@ShadowWizard We wouldn't be able to sleep at night if we did that ;p
How long did he live?
He's still alive
he's 12 this april
12:02 AM
Nice!
doing ok other than terrible teeth and a bum leg
oh wait, is this the dog in your avatar? :)
Nice... @ɥʇǝS what's the story behind yours? If there is one... ;)
Guess no cousin's wife involved?
@ShadowWizard I've never owned a dog. Just fish and the one frog.
My Dad was deathly allergic to rabbits, cats, birds, and mildly allergic to every other kind of furry/hairy animal so it was never an option.
12:08 AM
I think he means the avatar
My dad had a pet cow as a kid ;p
Oh the avatar?
I just needed something new. Had this stuffed Iguana. Now I am an Iguana ;)
There was a time when I used pictures of myself, but I could never get a well exposed image of myself and then this one troll threatened to stab me and I kinda decided "meh, they don't look good anyway, I'll go to something less recognizable for now."
The threat didn't scare me much, but it did make me rethink how much about myself I put out online.
@ɥʇǝS And now you are indirectly the cause of hundreds of troll-perpetrated iguana stabbings across the world every year.
@JasonC D:
THINK ABOUT THE CONSEQUENCES OF YOUR ACTIONS, FOR A CHANGE!
12:23 AM
Do any of you use "haven" as a past participle for "to have"? Like "haven gotten a drink, I was no longer thirsty" for the past form of "having gotten a drink, I am no longer thirsty".
I realized it sounded a little odd and can't find haven used that way in dictionaries.
er
that sounds informal, southern and drunk.
@bjb568 I have never heard or seen it used that way.
lel
I've used it my whole life (in addition to "had"), probably never got corrected because it sounds like "having" and "haven't".
@bjb568 And the only references I see in relation to "have" is the verb "haven" in Middle English, which is actually all tenses, just a direct equivalent to "have".
But the past form of the sentence would have to be changed to "since I had…" which sounds needlessly verbose. Maybe I'm improving English with this.
12:28 AM
Yeah but, I think you replaced "having" with "haven".
It's totes better.
user315433
Having had a drink, I ...
Just call it havin' and everybody's happy.
Now that sounds southern.
@bjb568 nope
12:31 AM
Y'all havin' a good ol' time?
user315433
Computer Graphics had a silent mod swap yesterday: Martin Ender (also a PPCG mod) is out, Dan Hulme (also an Android mod) in.
Maybe they just swapped BRAINS! :O
user315433
Nobody updated the pro tem mods post. ಠ_ಠ
@JasonC drivin' mah traktarrrrr
@NormalHuman One time two users swapped names and pictures. I didn't know either of them well enough to tell by their posts and I was thoroughly confused because one of them was a moderator and the other wasn't. Took me way too long to figure that out -.-
12:33 AM
Lol. Traktar sounds like a villain in some universe of sentient construction equipment.
@JasonC Reminds me of a targ.
Or some other scifi animal.
Your face reminds me of a targ.
user315433
Tractrix is better.
Tractrix sounds like Traktar's kinky mistress.
Or Traktar's drag name.
@JasonC Your mother was targ.
:p
I wonder, when they created the Klingon language, whether they made rules on how to create new words. It's got grammar. Just needs words..
user315433
12:50 AM
Apparently, Homebrewing was once a SE 1.0 site called Brew Advice, but it's not clear if any content was imported.
user315433
They also have a very confusing history of moderators, even though it's incomplete.
1:05 AM
@ɥʇǝS memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Klingonese#Background_information - Search the page for "The Klingon language as spoken" and read that paragraph.
TIL James Doohan was basically responsible for that language.
> We created the Klingonese by using some of what Hartmut had done and then combining it with our own: we strung together nonsense syllables, basically, totally made up sounds with clicks, and grunts, and hisses.

Q: Getting 404 - Not Found when trying to access Stack Overflow from chrome

CNutsSo when I try to access Stack Overflow from chrome I get 404 - Not Found But when I try from Microsoft Edge it works. I have no idea why, any help would be appreciated thanks.

Seems weird.
@JasonC hmm, chrome is super picky about the certs it validates. iirc this is the error you get if Chrome gets out of date and it decides it won't trust any certs past a certain date. Or something like that.
1:21 AM
Hm
I was sure that was gonna be the winner
me too. Odd.
That's not a default 404 page for Chrome, is it? I've never seen it generate one like that before, at least.
I don't think so
@JasonC bet you it's a corporate firewall
@ArtOfCode probably the case.
user315433
1:30 AM
user202362
That's a lot of SO tabs ...
@Telkitty you should see my average window :P
I've got 12 SE tabs open right now, and that's actually low.
@ArtOfCode That's what I'm thinking too.
I wonder why it would work in Edge, though.
user202362
I don't usually have more than 5 tabs open
I can't work out how, but my gut says DNS may be involved. Doesn't really add up though.
oh there's another one.
Same antivirus attempts to scan HTTPS by adding their own root CA, which can throw errors like this in browsers that care.
1:40 AM
Oh maybe
It'd be kinda funny if it was a DNS issue given the tab he's got open in his screenshot, heh.
Oh man that unsolved mysteries clip is bringing back so many childhood fears, haha.
x-entertainment.com/articles/0970 just about sums it up.
> [Robert Stack] could rattle off his favorite condiments and still send men into tears
Im here
So what can i try?
haha jason that was a good one
@CNuts So you just reinstalled your PC and you haven't installed any after market firewalls or antivirus, correct?
Ya nothing
i did just install adblock
Alright well disable all extensions until we figure this out.

@CNuts looks clean, assuming you didn't reset your router recently too.
Or it wasn't hacked. But if other sites are working it's probably fine.
No i didnt
Still doesn't work after disabling all extensions right?
no it dosent :/
How about if i restart my pc?
please do
1:52 AM
okay brb
it works!!!
im sorry i wasted so much of you guys time on that i should of tried that a long time ago
Does anyone know why it did that?
no prob
@CNuts not really..
well thanks for the help can you post the answer so i can close it?
@CNuts meh just add a comment and we'll close as no reproducible.
okay
2:07 AM
@NormalHuman It's weird. The entire time reading that I wanted to be like "gonna downvote the crap out of this rant". Then by the time I was done, I found myself thinking "Huh... good point."
I mean the post he's referring to is ridiculous, and the lock makes sense. But even with his attitude, I kind of can't fault him for following through, and his demand seems entirely reasonable.

This... may sound a little like an odd question, but have there been any posts that should have been reported here by SmokeDetector but... weren't?
@ThomasWard It's hard to say. We don't get smokey reports here unless 5 minutes (or something) goes by without the post being deleted. You'd have to look through MS or compare the reports it gives in Charcoal HQ (or SOCVR) with timestamps.
That said, I haven't seen a smokey report in here in a few hours, which is odd.
!!/alive
@JasonC Kinda sorta
@JasonC The disturbing lack of reports is why i'm concerned
I'm poking @Undo over in CHQ to make sure posts're being processed
Maybe it's just a smooth night.
o/ @angussidney ^ probably why hichris popped into CHQ
3:29 AM
@ThomasWard Check DeletionWatcher, probably has to do with ID # changes with HTTPS.
Mar 12 at 3:11, by Normal Human
Apparently, this switch involves changing site id? On the moderator list, SU now got id 428 (was 3) and Security got 429. These ids are normally issued when sites are created...
Actually, nevermind, looks like it's good there.
@ThomasWard metasmoke.erwaysoftware.com/posts -- Not a lot of spam detected in past few hours. So we at least know that it's not a detection -> chat report issue.
@angussidney Does smokey watch the MSE sandbox post? There's no like, special exemption for that one, is there?
Oh no
It does seem funny
@hichris123 @angussidney According to metasmoke.erwaysoftware.com/status, ArtOfCode's was on standby. teward/Overlord was running but showed 0 scanned posts. @Undo 's Pi looks like it just came up.
3:45 AM
yeah, we know what's happening
tl;dr gremlins
@JasonC Overlord was running antigremlin tests - it's not a "live failover" instance, it's a dev instance on my laptop ;)
@JasonC Haven't smelt any spam on my site for a bit
that's always the case as well
Overlord is never in charge ;)
Oh you're teward.
yup.
@JasonC teward is my GitHub username and my Metasmoke username; my SO/SE name is Thomas Ward.
which is my actual name :)
it's also why i have privs to stab smokey everywhere with a sword :)
ayyyy there we go
3:59 AM
@Undo Do you have any idea how many innocent Drupal users ended up going off and buying garcinia cambogia extract during that down time? HAVE YOU NO SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY?
@JasonC seventeen-point-four users.
and most of those were bots.

Alexa's report on stack exchange is weird. The site is very slow (83% of sites are faster). Top search keywords: 'tis the season, busyness, moreso, bear with me, and 2^16.
user315433
Try to make a story using these keywords...
user315433
Yeah, most of the report is rubbish.
4:30 AM
That is weird.
@NormalHuman Aside from "2^16" those are all also topics of questions on the english site.
Not very popular ones, though.
Weird.
@NormalHuman There's an "Upgrade to View" button underneath, maybe those are like the lower end? SO's are weird, too.

So a few days ago, I set up my tent on a cliff during this wildness walk in the evening, the overlord came to visit. I found myself trembling with fear, afraid that my tent was going to collapse in the gust and my things blown into the ocean by the gale. But at 4 in the morning, wind changed direction, rain came. @rene I... have conflicting thoughts on it. I don't necessarily think it's worth keeping around or that it's a post made in good faith (and my comment is kinda antagonizing as well), but it's also late on a Friday/early on a Saturday and I don't know about outright burning anything to the ground. Just hangover
The fact that I'm totally fine is a strong sign that I need to get out more. :/
@JasonC Question is why SE about page says "programming community" since it is a group of 150+ community in which considerable are unrelated to programming.
@JasonC lol
3:53 PM
@Pandya Oh yeah I'd definitely post about that one on MSE.
Seems like a fine question.
@JasonC ok.
@JasonC Just posted:

Q: Why SE about page says "programming community"?

PandyaStackExchange about page says: The world’s largest programming community is growing I want to know why it say "programming community" since SE is actually group of 150+ communities in which considerable are unrelated to programming? Also it is not supposed to talk about Stack Overflow as...

Ok. Now talking about suggestion: How about "StackExchange timeline" at SE about page like that on SO about page?
4:16 PM
@JasonC I think ill go and watch that Unsolved Mysteries video again haha
Lol
That show broke me forever.
hahaha
Ya i just cleared the cache and its still the same
I'm 35 and I still walk quickly past dark rooms with open doors at night.
@CNuts Hrm. I don't actually have any ideas I'm just trying to do some triage for when somebody else sees it.
I think everybody's hungover today. It's been quiet.
Ive just got a VR Goggles been playing haunted house games all day its crazy haha
Oh god
4:22 PM
haha yeah we'll see
Doom 3, that's my creepy game of choice for late nights.
Imagine that in VR
Oh man
I feel like there needs to be more completely terrifying VR games.
Like Air Crash Investigation: The Game, with reenactments.
Lol, youtube.com/watch?v=FPfS9LhnJmg -- I watched this when I was like 12.
There was this weird period during the 80's / early 90's where alien abductions were the big creepy topic. Unsolved Mysteries had a lot of abduction episodes, too. It's why X Files was so terrifying in 1993, it was all fresh mainstream horror.
I remember being so scared of the x files intro music hahah
4:38 PM
It makes everything scary, lol.
hahaha true
5:34 PM
@TravisJ @M.A.R. Oh man. So, a totally reasonable comment by somebody:
> The cheetahs actually do this all the time in the Masaai Mara. The reason being that people have been there with their jeeps and cameras for so long that the cheetahs are use to them and know they don't mean them harm. The cheetahs also sometimes use the jeeps as watch towers for other predators as well as hunting. The awesomely done documentary series Big Cat Diaries was based here for several seasons and showed these cats in their daily lives.
And then, the inevitable:
> oh, wow! it's amusing how you just white person, are that very stupid and just solved what the cheetah thinks. That cheetah is searching for food and will eat anyone or anything.
> You're just another idiot, idiot. "I heard that cheetah use the jeep to hide from lions." Your comment is just a great example of how retarded you are. Not the right person to even waste my time.
Glorious.

@SmokeDetector I remember when Graphic Design was a little beta site... and now they are #3 in spam network-wide, ahead of Drupal. The current list is: Stack Overflow, Ask Different, Graphic Design, Drupal Answers, Ask Ubuntu, Super User, The Workplace, other sites have <100 reports in the last month.
@NormalHuman but what does it mean? Is it good sign or bad sign? (for the site)
user315433
I think it's generally a good sign. Being popular with spammers means they've made it.

@JohnRennie We did it in school actually. It was part of an idea we had in mind for a project. We had to abandon it because the capacitor part didn't work. Though it did burn a bit of the switchboard. If the current surges then why don't manufacturers give a safety limit on the amount of current which should be allowed through the capacitor. — Kunal Pawar 12 hours ago
I wish my school experiments were like that.
All I do at skewl is knock down beakers and test tubes.
@bjb568 For the next 4 years, they will be, and you'll wish they weren't.
Did you get accepted anywhere yet?
No, but I haven't heard from CMU yet.
But I'm going to stay another year, so if they accept me I'll defer enrollment.
University of Pittsburgh is also not too shabby at all.
9:26 PM
Well, by next year (really six months until I start the dreadful application process again in full swing), I should be good enough to be looking at only the top dozen schools.
Georgia Tech is another good one.
Yeah. I do need to figure out what I want to do and if that's engineering.
Honestly, if you intend to go to grad school, I'd say for undergrad prioritize schools that don't put you in a lifetime of debt right off the bat.
Yeah, I'll try. o_o
Or just do what I did, say, "screw it", drop out, get your dream job, inexplicably say "screw it" again 6 years later, and spend the next 11 years single, depressed, and going nowhere with a jaw-droppingly boring freelance career in a city that you'd probably be happier moving out of.

Maybe "Here farts Jason"?

I mean, nobody will smell it anyway :D

(not zombies)
user315433
Takes up less room on the planet, which could use some more.
@ShadowWizard I think there's just one, final fart.
Finite in length.
@JasonC at least it's fun? ;)
Clarify "it".
9:39 PM
the final fart
user315433
@ShadowWizard Sounds like the name of a Pink Floyd album.
The final fart could be the missing link to the big bang. On day 1 God light a match ... BOOM ....
I'm happy to put a message in between anything you post here
@rene but fart is useless in deep space
9:42 PM
You haven't been there, right?
@rene Yeah I know you like to stick your... petal... in the middle of things. :P
@ShadowWizard Not entirely true, you could use it to change direction.
@rene maybe I was... can't remember..... :D
@JasonC in spacesuit? Not sure.
Also if the big bang was a fart, it may not have been into deep space. More likely it was into nothing at all.
So your claim is that the universe was created by god farting into a spacesuit.
9:43 PM
Seems legit.
will do as alternative fact
You should make a YouTube video outlining that theory.
Do it in the spirit of youtube.com/watch?v=HOpRaXBsh7I.
The comments would be pure gold.

@JasonC with demonstration? YouTube got enough fart videos already. :D
How you want to present your theory is entirely up to you.
