also muze's been spamming links to a question on A51 about what feels like a "shitty physics question" stackexchange site

Q: What's the deal with Altmetric? How reliable is its scraping, and how often does it happen?

E.P.Altmetric is a service that attempts to track the online impact of scholarly articles, which it does by keeping score of mentions on Wikipedia, Facebook, Twitter, blogs, and the like and then using questionable cutting-edge statistical methods for producing one shiny number for bean-counting admi...

happy for people to re-tag it.

I love physics.SE & outdoors SE folks though - one is only bound by imagination, the other faces the practicality of real danger in the wild

I think you're confusing physics with worldbuilding @Telkitty
@E.P. its really a question for Altmetric, and chances are its probably a trade seekrit.

@JourneymanGeek Some of it, yes, but there also needs to be a significant interaction surface with SE servers, so not necessarily.

Well, there was a moderator who expressed the opinion that the question should be closed... but at the same time, probably wanted to keep the diamond.

@zaq ehhh. I've never had anyone ever pressure us mods on anything in SU. Kicking out a mod for disagreeing seems like a terrible idea.
That's pretty terribly speculative
and I think a grand total of 2-3 mods have been asked to leave ever and its almost always due to moderation styles.

@Rob oh! How did I miss to read it! Thanks for pointing out

according to this though...
there's basically 50 or so people posting answers that are upvoted in a week on SU or SF

@JourneymanGeek I remember one and that was on some site where they used a script to insta-close questions without telling the CMs

6:32 AM
@Magisch Naw, just closed a ton of them without community input all at once.
There's a good reason we use meta SE/SU before doing anything substancial like nuking a tag
funny thing is, quite a few people agreed with what he did, just not how.
I'd probably get a stern talking to if, say, I went around hunting all SU's legacy, now off topic questions just to nuke em.

@JourneymanGeek yeah, that is true.
@qwer yup, most likely. That's why I don't like installing userscripts: you can't really know what it is doing exactly, and things are being different in weird places without you never expecting it.

@ShadowWizard I'm pretty much always right, except when I'm not ;)

@JourneymanGeek I agree, you are right! :D
@zaq well, at least they're verified, like Trump.

@ShadowWizard verified, certified, certifiable. SMALL DIFFERENCE!

One good thing that might come of him is the end of the politically correct era.

7:26 AM
eh.
I don't like political correctness but it cannot be the end of civility too.
I don't expect folks to be nice to each other all the time or worry about social justice and puppies and all that
but at the same time, respect for basic human dignity, and the things that really matter, like acting like a decent human being is important

@JourneymanGeek yeah, something like this. I mean, in the years where "political correctness" was in the rise, people became less civil towards each other.

@ShadowWizard because it wasn't

wasn't on the rise?

actually political "correctness"
it was closer to "groupthink"
I sometimes go "Yanno, that guy is a total arse, but... he's right about X"
or just figure someone's just full of hot air and let them expend it.

@JourneymanGeek that usually smells bad :P

7:33 AM
Yeah it does ;p
But that's the problem I have with "PCness"
an unwillingness to try to see the perspective of the "other side"
Also true of "the other side" of course ;p

More like "I am right and you are wrong. I am stronger, so beat it." That's Trump, in a nutshell.

All politics sucks, until you remember we're dealing with human beings, not talking heads.
@ShadowWizard stronger?
Naw, louder

@JourneymanGeek president of the USA? I'd say he's stronger.

and that has been a trend in politics going back to, I donno, rome? icelanding things?

And before, he got billions of dollars. Ultimate power.

7:35 AM
@ShadowWizard Strength dosen't come from your position.
Right now, he has a few folk who're supporting him due to positional power

@JourneymanGeek if your position allows you to issue orders and control army, then yes this is strength.

who will gladly dump him the moment he lacks it.

@JourneymanGeek Moderators in general shouldn't be using their single-vote powers to bypass the community moderation process - only to step in where the community can't effectively moderate.

@Magisch agreed, mostly
That said, if I see something that's blatently off topic on my usual rounds, and I'm sure I hit it with the appropriate vote

Well yeah

7:37 AM
If I'm less than sure, I throw it into a chat room, or check on it later
Cause I don't have the option of a half strength modhammer ;p

Sure, but the job of a moderator isn't to go around and closing everything they find off topic, it's incidental if they sometimes close things, but their primary task isn't that and that's also not why they're given binding close votes
:P

lol
A good chunk of my job as a moderator happens on meta and the mod queues ;p
and chat I suppose

of course

@JourneymanGeek well, not here! ;)
Here you're just mortal

eh. probably.
can't win em all
I have this terrible habit of actually responding to complaints sensibly ;p

@JourneymanGeek until the other side explodes? ;)

7:47 AM
@ShadowWizard eh. last time it happened... I got a reversal badge ;)
essentially though, its important to have the community trust I will do things for the right reasons
as opposed to the right thing (which I try to do too!)

@JourneymanGeek lol, of course... and the poor soul? Nuked?

So guess all is good... ;)

Q: Shutting down recurring community self-evaluations

hairboatWe've been talking a lot about the efficacy of community self-evaluations lately, both internally on the Community Team and out in the open on meta. Lots of ideas were tossed around, but the underlying theme of these discussions has been that site self-evaluations are not useful in their current ...

@JourneymanGeek note that I didn't mean community self site evaluation, I meant site evaluation by CM for whether woth to graduate or not. /cc @ShadowWizard
Let me clear/explain. If there is a considerable visitors redirected from Search Engines, then it shows that (beta) site is generating good information.
So, it should be considered for graduation of a beta site.
^^ just thought/opinion.

@Pandya sorry, not familiar with this.
There is stat for visitors, don't think they care where they came from.

10:32 AM
@ShadowWizard Ok. No problem. cm may help to understand

But visitors are not enough, SE site with millions of visitors, thousands of questions, but not enough good answers, won't graduate.

Hmm...

It seems to be a complex mix of factors and their evolution over time that determines whether or not a site graduates

@Bart yup

@ShadowWizard Yes, quality is the Heart of reliability of SE I think.
@Bart I Agree.

Q: Graduation, site closure, and a clearer outlook on the health of SE sites

AnaBack in April of 2010, Joel shared our assumptions about the role of small sites in the newly minted Stack Exchange network: If a site does not have enough activity at the end of 90 days, it will be closed down. Any existing Q&A will be archived and made available for download, but the site...

I believe this is it
Unless there's something more up to date, or TPTB weigh in ;p
and quite literally its mostly about activity and stewardship rather than search engine hits

@JourneymanGeek Yes.
