yaaaaa

I think that was one of my first answers on M&TV, now that I think of it.
Well, early, not first.
I likely won't go mirrorless unless Nikon has a good offering. I don't want to replace the lenses.

ya, I get that

Though, it seems like a lot of the mirrorless don't necessarily use the same lenses regardless.

gotta look at the mount, yeah

@Catija I thought the question was posted by @JourneymanGeek's sock friend

2:43 AM
@AndrewT. Clearly those are shoes, not socks.

3:02 AM
@Catija I'm pretty sure I've never once used the back display instead of my eye. Why would I want something that's got a lag behind reality? (Currently shooting a D810, but long history.)
Not to mention all those other awful things you otherwhere mention.

@SantaClaus NaH, I wasn't there, but some of my friends were.
Oh, I've applied to MIT, Caltech, UMich, and Illinois (early action) so far.

3:28 AM
@tchrist Yep. I've had to resort to it once or twice but not often. I have a D90 - it's like 10 years old and not full frame but it still takes nice pictures. My dad got it for me when I started in the film program. He was so excited because it was Nikon's first DSLR with movie mode. Unfortunately it's pretty crappy video.

I've heard that.
It was very early.
For video.

Yeah.

I never use video, but I'm old.
All that moving-around stuff just confuses me. :)

Hee hee.

Coincidentally, I also have D90... I think it was said the best value price for Nikon at that time (dunno though)

3:30 AM
I even tried to look through the viewfinder on my first phone that had a camera. I was very disappointed with it.

Only used movie mode once though

I'm not a big fan of shooting video (yes, that seems odd for having gone to film school... but true... I went to produce, not direct or DP).

The D70/D90-type line is good value for money.

@AndrewT. Do you like it? My dad has a D300 and I like the menus on the D90 a lot better.

Oh I have a D300 around here somewhere. Never use it anymore.

3:33 AM
I need to upgrade to something full frame.

@Catija well, that's my first camera (and also DSLR), and I like it.

But once you get into the D300/D500 body line, you are talking a lot more money. You also become addicted to the professional setup.

brb~

How is it different? The pro setup...

The D750 is a nice body.
Well, the pro setup doesn't have scene modes. :)
You can't accidentally change a setting by bumping the wrong thing.
Everything locks down.
And there's a button or dial for everything you need to get at.
You don't have to use menus.
The body is also a lot sturdier, which of course means it's a bit heavier.
The 750 is a full frame body falling between the 610 and the 810.
It seems to have a lot of 810 features.

3:41 AM
@tchrist Ah. I use the dials for everything as it is. :P
I have a feeling that it will be a bit of work to learn, though.

A pro body setup always has three dials: aperture and shutter speed on the right of course, and then a locking shooting-mode one on the left for Single, Continuous-Low, Continuous-High, Quiet, Mirror-Up, etc.
You can switch between A/S/P/M with your right index finger and never take your eye from the viewfinder. And those can never change without you telling them to.

@tchrist I only ever use those anyway... though they're on the left.

Left?
I don't think so.

On the D90

No, they're on the right on the D90, and on all Nikon bodies.

3:45 AM

Oh we're talking about different things.
The aperture and shutter dials are on the right.
That left dial is your A/S/M/P and other things.

You mean the settings to pick them?

That dial doesn't hold those on the pro bodies, and it locks.
So the red "format" marker on your camera.
By the power button.
On my camera, that's on the "mode" button, which you hold and spin the dial to cycle between A/S/P/M.

Ah. Interesting.

As you see, Nikon have moved things around a bit.
The D4/D800 line did some reapportioning of things that takes a little shooting to get used to coming from the D90 or D200/D300 bodies.

3:52 AM
Oooh, it takes compact flash and/or sd?

@Catija Right.

That's cool...

The thing about these newer bodies is that you have a dynamic range that's beyond your wildest dreams.

Ouch, though... $2800...

Yep.
Which is why I suggested stepping down a grade.

3:53 AM
@Catija hah, that's... new PC money for me ._.

I'd have to pick a new MBP or camera...

You might be content with a 610 body, but I couldn't be. You might like the 750, and I might, too.

@tchrist That sound awesome. I know that digital usually has issues with range...

The thing is, you should rent these bodies to see what you think.

Nowadays I use my smartphone with manual settings though... Wondering to buy mirrorless or not

3:56 AM
Yeah. We have a great local camera store in town that does rentals.

Apparently the 610 has a really nice sensor.

I've always ended up on Ken Rockwell's site for reviews...

aw gee

?

No, read bythom.com
Rockwell's too annoying.

3:59 AM
It's something that comes up in search a lot. :P I don't have any particular attachment.

Rockwell is very SEO'd.
It's all he does.

Ah.
@tchrist The page width on that site is wider than my browser window :P

haha

It sounds like they're going to be putting out a mirrorless Nikon soon, though... but I'm not sure I like the sound of that.

The thing that will most freak you out, I bet, about the new bodies is that they support ISO equivalencies with too many zeroes. :)

4:04 AM
Without "grain", though?

Yes. That's the point.
The 810 goes to 12,800 native, with two stops of push beyond that with some grain if you want it.
The D5 goes to ISO 102,400 native, and pushes with grain to 3,280,000.
See what I mean?

Wow... I guess that helps with zooms that don't have low f-stops?

That's right.

Woah. That's crazy.

It allows you to shoot in the dark.
As it were.

4:05 AM
Yeah.

I shoot at ISO 5000 all the time and think nothing of it.
You can't do that with the D90 and earlier bodies.

I have two primes for low light... a 35 (or maybe 50) and a macro... they're down at 1.4 or so... but you still need some light.

You probably have the 35/2 and the 50/1.4, or maybe the 35/1.8 and the 50/1.8
The 35/1.4 is too expensive.

35 1.8 , which was absurdly cheap.

Yup!
The 50/1.8 is also absurdly cheap, and absurdly good.

4:08 AM
and the 60 mm 2.8
They call it a "micro".

That's because it is. :)

But it's a macro :P Or at least I've never understood the difference.

Microphotography is when the reproduction is <= 1.0x lifesize.
Macrophotography is when the reproduction ration is > 1.0x lifesize.

I "stole" it from my dad when I was making jewelry.
I take photos of his orchids for him sometimes, though.

The Nikon micros go down to 1:1.

4:10 AM
This is that one.

What that means is that a 1-inch object takes up the 1" on your sensor.
That's why it's 1:1.
1:2 is also micro. 2:1 would be macro.

You have to go to ... a lot of work to get macro.

Ah. Gotcha.
I use it for a lot of regular photos... I'll be honest.

Can't say anything bad about the 60 micro. It's terribly sharp, of course.
I use the 105 because it also works well for portraits on a full frame body.

4:12 AM
It is. I like how crisp it is... I think that's why I'm so annoyed by my iPhone photos. They're always soft.

@Catija Putting it mildly.
> However, it's my preferred lens for ant photography (not joking; ants do produce unpleasant acids and a long working distance is needed!)

HAHA
I think I have an actual macro for my iPhone... it takes photos of extremely tiny things... it's one of the Ollo Clips?

Wouldn't know.
Lenses for close-up photography
AFS 60 mm f/2.8 Micro-Nikkor ED G N (well, sometimes "newer" is in fact better!)
He likes yours.

> IR: Unfortunately, this lens does not work well for IR. There is a weak but clearly visible IR hot spot, and sharpness suffers

4:19 AM
Might as well throw it in the trash, then. :P

Huh... that's interesting.

I like the flowers stuff.
> UV-absorbing substances (flavonyl glucosides) are instrumental in bringing about the fascinating pollinating guide patterns. UV marks on flowers are but a logical extension of the visual pollinating clues provided by evolution in Nature. When a flower is stated to lack UV marks, it simply means the signals emitted are directed towards pollinators which can "see" in alternate spectral bands, outside the UV range.

It'd be interesting to see side by side images of what it looks like in visible light vs IR/UV.

Just click on any of his flower links. That's what he shows.

4:25 AM
I just saw that.
I had been looking at the other set.

That's plain old calendula.
The thing with UV is that both the lens and the sensor try very hard to block that, so it takes longer exposures unless you can fix one or both of those.
He likes to use lenses that let the UV through.
Those are expensive.

Yeah... and I keep UV filters on all my lenses as scratch guards (in addition to the lens caps). :/

I have a friend with an "old" body that has been modified so it doesn't have a UV filters at all, but rather a visible light one.
@Catija That's really something of a scam.
Something the camera shops push.

Oh yeah? To sell the filters?

Yes.
Evil margins.
Does nothing for you.
Adds another surface.
Which contributes to flare.

4:29 AM
I don't like touching the actual glass, though :( It scares me.

Don't touch it! :)
Only put a filter on whose effects you need.
That might be an ND, but is more likely a polarizer.

:( I'm apparently really bad at keeping my lenses clean, then... the filters, at least are always dusty at the least.

> Dandelions are really a cluster of related, apomictic microspecies.

I don't know... one is UV(c) and the other two are UV(0)?

4:33 AM
Oooh, that is so cool!

"Just" a dandelion.

So what do you like to photograph?

Cat videos. :)

... You mean you watch videos and take photos of them?
Because you already said that you don't like video... so either you're being coy or an auteur.

My husband. I don't think he's ever bought me any. Though, I suppose that's different.

It's hard to take shots like those with a cell phone. :)
@Catija No, shooting star. Dodecatheon pulcherrima.

Passiflora, known also as the passion flowers or passion vines, is a genus of about 500 species of flowering plants, the type genus of the family Passifloraceae. They are mostly vines, with some being shrubs, and a few species being herbaceous. For information about the fruit of the passiflora plant, see passionfruit. The monotypic genus Hollrungia seems to be inseparable from Passiflora, but further study is needed. == Distribution == The family Passifloraceae has a pantropical distribution; however, Passiflora itself is not native to Africa, where many other members of the family Passifloraceae...

Correct! Passionflowers.

I don't think I've ever seen a fruit on the ones near me...

Me neither.
But passionfruit juice is the secret ingredient in many a wonderful elixir of pleasure and delight.
Passiflora edulis is a vine species of passion flower that is native to southern Brazil through Paraguay to northern Argentina. Its common names include passion fruit or passionfruit (English), maracuyá or parcha (Spanish), grenadille or fruit de la passion (French), maracujá (Portuguese) and lilikoÊ»i (Hawaiian). It is cultivated commercially in tropical and subtropical areas for its sweet, seedy fruit. The passion fruit is a pepo, a type of berry, round to oval, either yellow or dark purple at maturity, with a soft to firm, juicy interior filled with numerous seeds. The fruit is both eaten and...

... which is kinda creepy since the "passion" in "passion fruit" is... the same one in Passion of the Christ.

5:07 AM
Those are the ones you eat.

> The name maracuyá or maracujá comes from a Guaraní word meaning "nursery for flies".
Ewwww.
Yeah.. I don't think I want to eat that.

It's awfully tasty as a juice in drinks.
Or icecream.
It's maracujá in Brazil, so ending "-ZHA".
They like it there.
Trust me: the juice is super tasty.

you can also get it as frozen pulp
which actually works pretty well in some things

That's right, you can. And it does.

also we accidentally grew a vine

5:14 AM
Because you spat the seeds out in the garden.

which for some bizzare reason had like... berry sized fruit with normal sized seeds
@tchrist or the balcony.
I like crunching the seeds

Some people don't. I think they're thinking they're like grape seeds or something.
But these seeds you can eat.

yup
tbh I bite or swallow most seeds that arn't stones

I'm sure I've had it... I just don't remember.
I don't drink a lot.

I didn't mean booze.
Although one can.
I meant just fruit-juice mixtures. Ice creams. That kind of thing.

5:20 AM
I don't drink alcohol either

It certainly won't hurt you not to drink booze.

Yeah, I'm one of those people who drinks mostly water with a Texan's interest in Iced Tea.

Water, Fruit Juice, the rare soda, and I lean towards the fancy there

Pop's a recreational beverage for me.
There are a couple light fruit-juice-based ones they make in Italy I like. Not too sweet.
Tangerine. Lemon.

There was this orange cream soda my brother got that was good

5:27 AM
Yes, I like those.

Otherwise, bundaburg and Angus O'Neil's got got ginger and root beers, and Bundaburg's lemon lime bitters are awesome
oh, and this one obscure cola which I don't think they make any more :(

@bjb568 cool! So far i've applied to Umich, uiuc, gatech, purdue, and a state school or two. I've got a couple more for january but im honestly questioning if its worth applying (stanford, cmu, mit). good luck!

alexolutA few days ago, I unaccepted a lot of answers to my questions just to test if I could exceed the reputation cap by accepting more than 100 answers on the next day. fair enough

Apparently I missed the "Lightroom" topic here... Beautiful photos of flowers and cats!

@alexolut Fair enough, but it's not really necessary IMO. I don't feel strongly either way - just tend to keep [support] for specific and self-contained questions about how the site (or apps) works. If the feature request is declined, the answer will have an explanation either way.

I try to be helpful ...

hmmm... I commented on TJ's Canonical Snippet Question asking why it referred to React at all (twice)... since, you know, it's a Q&A pair for snippets in general, irrespective of libraries. My comment was deleted and the posts still mention React.

@canon isn't their last paragraph clear enough? It tries to defuse any duplicate close votes beforehand
That requires him to explain how it is not a duplicate
If the reference to react is removed it risks being closed as a dupe I guess.

3:58 PM
No, it doesn't. They're clearly different to anyone with domain expertise. imo, I guess.
Four paragraphs into the answer he also has, "(If you're using React, refer to this other answer for React-specific instructions rather than this answer.)" which seems OT for that pair.
... unless the intent is to create specialized snippet setup for all popular library combinations and link them from there... but I doubt it.

4:13 PM
@canon hmm, OK. Maybe pull him in chat then to sort it out?

@rene we just hashed it out in comments and then deleted everything.

And I think I wasn't rude this time ....
But that is better left for others to judge

What was the comment?

something like: the question is edited which makes your answer obsolete, sorry.
the question was unclear so I managed to get the OP to edit their question
the answers were given on the initial revision but that was really LQ and useless. The answers could have been a comment at best

@canon I know the feeling. I've been 90%+ towards my Java gold badge for ages now. Just can't find something I can and want to answer.

Kind of wish I can go back to being oblivious to all the problems with posts, but the red pill has been swallowed and the rabbit hole is pretty disappointing.

I've made my peace with it. My gold badge progress is largely erected over a rotting favela of old, embarrassing answers to bad questions.

Although I estimate I could get the badge in maybe 2-3 years if I just do nothing.

@bjb568 It is the bare minimum for acceptance, so yeah you could call it very low considering that you literally cannot get in with anything below that.

Nothing wrong with picking up trash on the side of the road, but if you don't stop as long as you're finding trash then you'll end up living on the side of the road.
@canon not so much. But, I don't usually try to moderate anymore either. None of the limits apply, so 2011 was pretty dispiriting.
