Heh, my senior just came back about two weeks ago from long term illness... out since December... but that's different. :( Still, made it difficult to do much.

naw, I think they were just... not there.
I couldn't afford to do do that
I was basically in at 8, and on my feet till 5 ;p

(also, they pull this stunt where they always refuse to confirm you as a full employee after 3 months, so they can do it at 6)
@Telkitty Dream involves "thing thats very hard but not impossible" ;p

OK, time to go home. I'm sure I'll be back later, though... probably...

I feel like doing something about elementary OS moderation, but don't know what. Out of my 60 pending flags (network-wide), 24 are on that site. The oldest of them turned 2 months old today. My post Reduce the number of required Delete/Recommend Delete review actions in Low Quality queue got 1 entire upvote on meta (with 11 views, half of them probably me).

.... You could ask a question on their meta "does this site need more moderators?"....

user315433
And get another 1 vote with 11 views?

One of the signs of a site in crisis is the inability to quickly handle flags.

user315433
I guess I could count that as overwhelming support, by the standards of that meta. But there's a chance the vote came from the Tavern when I linked that post earlier.

1:18 AM
... you're in here with a bunch of CMs/devs... you could ask what they think

user315433
They think about salary calculators, probably.

Um... yeah, none of the mods have been on the site all month...
September 30th is the most recent.

1:31 AM
@Desire Your obsession with salary calculators is weird.

@Catija I lied. Those are meta visit dates. Sorry.

user202362

I wonder when council will take action against incoming rabbit infestation in the neighbourhood ... not that I really want to see the rabbits gone

1:52 AM
@Telkitty Or adopt the bear's omnivorous habit.

omnivorous? I thought bears ate hunny.

@Catija heh. I consider good moderation to be more than flag handling.

user202362
Bears are carnivoran mammals of the family Ursidae. They are classified as caniforms, or doglike carnivorans. Although only eight species of bears are extant, they are widespread, appearing in a wide variety of habitats throughout the Northern Hemisphere and partially in the Southern Hemisphere. Bears are found on the continents of North America, South America, Europe, and Asia. Common characteristics of modern bears include large bodies with stocky legs, long snouts, small rounded ears, shaggy hair, plantigrade paws with five nonretractile claws, and short tails. While the polar bear is mostly...

Flags not being handled is either a symptom of people not having enough time to (which is bad), not bothering (which is worse!) or mods just wandering off into the sunset (we need more mods then)
but there's so much more

user202362
@JonEricson yeah, those opportunistic omnivorous ...

1:59 AM
@JourneymanGeek I didn't say it was only that... but if a site is failing to remove bad content, that makes it eligible for shutting down.

Not checking up on meta is bad too, but I mostly rely on my mod batsignal for that these days
@Catija ah
@Catija also stuff like spam is mostly user/bot handled these days so if that's not gone....
its a more ... elementary... problem

har har har. You'll have to ask @Desire what the flags are for.

(I am a terrible person and built all that up to make that one pun)
@JonEricson clearly he loves salary calculators. And wants a blinking marquee covering half the page about it.

@JourneymanGeek It's so sad that they made that code non-standard... such a great effect.
Andy made me mute the chat alerts because they're the same as his cell ringer.

hah
@Catija could do it in JS now probably.
and have flashing multicoloured blinking with marquees that appear and disappear on random parts of the page

@Telkitty no?

user202362
@JourneymanGeek in what ways?

I mean, no, I will not convince you ;p

user202362
because advertisers pay for them and they are less intrusive?

user202362
3:58 AM
@JourneymanGeek Oo

Well, historically there's little difference between an ad on a website and a traditional newspaper ad. Would you call it spam?
The main problem with online advertising is a lot of it is obnoxious or at least somewhat dangerous (SE deals with it by supposely being super picky) and there's no easy way to whitelist by parent site in most spam adblocks

user202362
both are about telling others a product or a service they may or may not need or want

spam is a little more like those people who stuff fliers in your post box

user202362
they serve the same purpose in that sense, though they might be at opposite sides of the spectrum ...

@Telkitty working out what you want/need without being stalkery as heck is hard ;p

6:37 AM
I still have pending flags from 2 weeks ago

Anyone is good at shell script ?
If yes, does it look good to you : hastebin.com/enedapecun.coffeescript ?
cc @ShadowWizard

6:54 AM
No shell for me... :/
I shall not write shell
@Magisch I had pending flags for like half year.
(MSE of course.)

@ShadowWizard MSE's more likely "its complicated" than absent mods?
Unless the CMs were really really busy.

Well, simple "This bug is fixed, please change to status completed" waited for weeks. That half year flag was "Can you please add reason why this was declined?" if I'm not mistaken.

@TheLittleNaruto the purpose of boarding point is that, the TT won't allocate to seat till the next station of boarding point even if you didn't boarded the train from starting point. In that case, the TT can't allocate it to someone till that person

Also since we have reservation from that point, the system won't allow reservation on that seat again

6:58 AM
(I think it was marked helpful in the end, but nothing was explained.)

@OptimusPrime again TT is not the one who allocates seat

the question is Can I, myself entrain before the boarding point

@ShadowWizard that vaguely makes sense.

32 secs ago, by Optimus Prime
Also since we have reservation from that point, the system won't allow reservation on that seat again

The message is clear, at least for me: custom flags are not welcome on MSE.
I still flag sometimes, can't help it, but much less than before.

6:59 AM
MSE is strange in general I think
there are no mods there, only stray CMs

@Magisch I tend to think of the CMs as mods.

@Magisch everyone with diamond see the queue, developers also handle flags on MSE afaik.

@ShadowWizard Yeah but do you chance that happening
I don't think so

@Magisch Oded handles a ton of janitorial work ;p
(IE, gets to stuff I want to flag before I do the scamp. How does a dog get a marshall badge around these parts? ;p)

@Magisch well let's ask... can't hurt. @Oded @Adam @Jeremy do you also handle custom flags on MSE? :)

7:04 AM
Sometimes. I don't go looking for them (once in a while I check the flag queue, but honestly... my time is best spent elsewhere), but if I see one and it's not something that looks like it needs capital-I investigating (same "time" problem), I handle it.

Fair enough. :)

@AdamLear It's been a couple of weeks since I last asked, any update on my ticket with the security bug?

If it's something that looks serious but I don't have the bandwidth for it, I ping the community team.

I'm not planning on publishing it like some security researchers do when nothing happens for like 3 months but I'd still like to know

@TheLittleNaruto hey, I have a doubt in git

7:05 AM
@OptimusPrime Go ahead, child!

@Magisch is it assigned to Adam? I don't think they "share" tickets once they're assigned. (i.e. Adam don't really know the status)

I made a commit and created a PR to a repo

Speaks in priest voice

then I made another commit and created a PR
but both got merged

7:06 AM
@ShadowWizard I know which ticket is referred to. No need to step in on my behalf.

oh, OK. :)

actually not me. one of my clg

@OptimusPrime of course both will be merged

How to split that

@Magisch got lots of tickets, lol

7:06 AM
He's participating in Hacktoberfest

@OptimusPrime decline the previous one ?

no. he want both PR's standalone. I mean stay as 2 instead of 1

@Magisch No. :( I'm splitting my time between two major things at the moment and it's making it difficult to fit anything else in. To be honest, I don't think it's a major security problem (or a problem where the cost of solving it doesn't outweigh the risk), but I haven't had a chance to fully look into it.

@TheLittleNaruto how to remove one commit from the PR?

Gonna go get some sleep. Later all

7:11 AM
@OptimusPrime first do this locally on your branch for which you raised a PR:

git revert --strategy resolve <commit-id>
git push -f pull origin

also, that's roughly the dumbest place to post that kinda thing.

The second command is to push the changes on remote @OptimusPrime

@ShadowWizard By chance I actually know that it's assigned to adam :p

7:13 AM
ah ok
what's the -f flag?

there's another assigned to shog, but shog already told me that he has no time atm

@OptimusPrime force? ;p

@Magisch I'm about 95% sure that it's the same ticket and I just passed it over to Shog since he mentioned familiarity with the approach :)

@AdamLear I don't think the second one is about a security bug

7:21 AM
@Adam, is that you deleted that one? or self deleted?

Hey let Adam go to sleep, everyone! :P

but idk anymore. I'm approaching 500 custom flags on SO due to serial voting, so I'm stoked when shog's big new thing that's supposed to curb that comes out

@OptimusPrime yeah closed and deleted by Adam

though I'll probably hit 1000 before that happens

@Magisch "shog's big new thing"?

7:23 AM
@Magisch there might be more than one :) but I don't see a ticket on my list from you anymore and I vaguely recall passing it to Shog as well (the one about SEDE voting stuff). Alternatively, I need to look closer at my pending tickets. I'm hoping to clear a few out either this Friday or early next week.
on that note, really leaving now =)

@ShadowWizard shog said he wanted to do a thing to improve serial voting detection on SO

No I steal Tim Post's Post :p

(More seriously though, random downvotes are not much reputation compared to upvotes. The main annoyance is if I can't hit a nice number like 6666 or 9999. )

9:40 AM
People definitely treat me differently with a diamond. Some people are nicer, some people are ruder :P It balances out, I guess.

heh. I kinda was in an odd situation where the diamond changed very little of how people saw me, outside the ability to instawhack stuff.
(bit of time between elections, lots of people nagging me to stand, lots of meta activity ;p)

9:53 AM
@JourneymanGeek as written in quoted comment I want them tag this post

@gnat not quite sure that's what featured gets used for
I wouldn't (I reserve it for super important announcements not super annoying design bugs)

10:20 AM
@JourneymanGeek right, I also normally wouldn't use it for bugs. But this case looks special, as in quoted comment important enough. Another way to look at it as sort of announcement if you wish, "hey anonymous visitors, don't be scared - we are aware of this awful banner and we're taking care of it"

Everything is special.

10:35 AM
@JourneymanGeek I guess you haven's seen that banner. Top voted answer over there opens with, "I was about to defend some aspects of this, but fortunately I tried it out again in an incognito session, and it's actually much worse than I remember..." (so did I by the way, I couldn't even imagine that some banner shown to anonymous visitors would ever worry me much)

@gnat added a screenshot
Point is though, SE's aware of it. That's the folks who need to fix it. Setting it as featured is nothing more than trying to abuse a site feature to apply pressure.

OK, need some help here. What I understand now from Tim's answer is: "Yes it was a mistake, but we're going to keep it. In the future, we won't make such mistakes". Am I right?

A: Don't clutter half the screen with things most people don't care for

Tim PostA while back, I wrote about a more formal process of announcing tests since we knew we'd be running dozens of them at any given time, and 95% of them were going to be too boring to waste a post announcing. There's also tests that end up being more opportunistic than anything, like when one tea...

If so, need to edit so I can turn the upvote into downvote.
The whole point of my request was to shrink that enormous banner.
(and need to put on the request)

so.... Kaspersky "counterattack" NYT claims by launching a "code review" campaign.
Still... does this really prove anything at all?

@Derpy of course not. The chance the "source code" they will publish is their actual code is 0%. They lie, and everyone knows this.

@ShadowWizard not what I meant.

10:47 AM
They're just a branch of Putin aka Russia, not an independent company. Most people shouldn't have any problem with that though. :)

@JourneymanGeek you should have started with that. So, you believe that it's a pressure and that pressure is abuse. Good to know

@ShadowWizard Assume that is actually the source code. What I meant is that if something was compromised I would assume it was not something client side.

@Derpy what do you mean? Compromised by whom?

I would expect that if any data-mining was performed, it was made on the data used by the cloud scan service.
and that is basically not testable even if you are sure the code you review is the actual one.
I mean - just compare the cloud scan to a service like onedrive

I expect the data mining they do will still be secret, yeah.

10:50 AM
@ShadowWizard again, not what I meant.

hehe, it's really hard to know what you mean, usually it happens by pure stroke of luck. :)
(it might be just me though! ;))
It goes ages back... lol
in Shadow's Den, Dec 15 '14 at 16:01, by Shadow Wizard
@SPArchaeologist what do you mean? Earning the iOS/android hats by just using the API? Don't think so

if I get how the cloud scan works for small file (like a .docx) the whole file is probably uploaded. Even if they were completely honest in giving out the full code for review, no one, not even them can be sure that the data that they have to receive in order for the service to work isn't stolen by some other entity

@Derpy oh
Well, you can see in the source code where the file is uploaded to.

Basically I mean that even if they are honest they have to get your data either way for a cloud scan to work, so their server are indeed an attack point.

If it's uploaded to some super-secure database, it might be "safe".
But like I said, I'm 100% sure they give everything to the Russian government. Nothing is kept private.
But I doubt others can really steal their data.

10:55 AM
I mean... if you synchronize your files with some cloud storage then you have a backup but now your files are steal-able from two sources instead of one. You AND the cloud service
If the cloud scan is comparable to a cloud "temporary storage" that should technically be deleted after the scan is performed, your file is steal-able during that scan.

@ShadowWizard Where do you draw that conclusion from? From CIA reports?

@Derpy If you're afraid of your files being stolen, really better not to use any cloud services at all, IMO.

Because those are less trustworthy then information directly published by the KGB, and equally shady

@Magisch my skeptic nature :)

@ShadowWizard By extension of that any antivirus company based in the US is an arm of the CIA

11:01 AM
And yes, American companies are also giving backdoors to the government, no doubt.
@Magisch well, pretty sure they give the CIA full access, yes.

@ShadowWizard again, that was just an example to make more clear what I meant.
to put it simply: I meant that when you externalize the virus scan of your file there is no way to "prove" the file wasn't stolen by some third party by just reviewing the scan service code.
Compare Kaspersky situation to Virus Total.
You upload the file, it gets scanned. Even if you could 100% review the code of every antivirus engine and the code the site uses to scan the file, you can never ensure the server itself hasn't been hacked and someone is pulling the files from memory when they are uploaded for scanning.
Basically you cannot even be sure either way.

11:23 AM
Any Cloud Virus Scan service is basically a backup solution. Your files are stored by insert agency of choice: KGB/NSA/AIVD/MI6 and kept safe. So safe, you can't even get to them ...

@rene and that will bring us to 202x when Capcom finally announces its new Megaman game.
