Nuri TasdemirToday, I have noticed that my reputation fell below 5K. It was above 5K like I don't know 5-10 days ago. However I couldn't find the reason of this change in reputation. Probably it is related to "documents". I don't know maybe an example is deleted. How can I learn the reason? By the way I did ...

I got "animal", "animal hybrid" on other frames

3:04 PM
@Bart Casting a CV takes a lot less energy than discussion. And has marginally more effect: the tug of war got the post locked, while discussion achieved exactly nothing.

New hat for Winterbash 2017:

@zaq given Tim's response, I wouldn't say discussion achieved nothing.

user315433
I read it as "whatever, Joel's the boss". With a lot more extra words in between.

@ShadowWizard looks like Queen Beatrix' hair

@Bart how you know Beatrix's hair?

@zaq would it be better if that post was written by Joel himself?

Especially considering he'll do what the boss wants, understanding or not.

(I mean the answer Tim posted)

"he'll do what the boss wants" ... isn't that called being an employee? And if you can't do that, make sure you're no longer an employee?

Well, there's a red line somewhere.

3:11 PM
Sure

But don't think they came close to it in this current ordeal. So far.

Well, given the complaints to HR within SO, there are at least some less than pleased with the company line.

I mean, suppose Trump will give an executive order to shut down the Internet for whole USA. Will SO users still object to the company making a stand?
It's quite similar.

@Bart Yeah; but then what's the point of discussing things with people who don't make the decision on the matter? The one who decides isn't a part of discussion.

That is an unfortunate practicality of any interaction with a company or individual with spokespeople. I still however rather speak up and be ignored than not speak up at all. And maybe I'm naive, but I never got the impression that we are ignored by SO/SE

So outrageous, carving the world into us vs. them

4:16 PM
@ShadowWizard not as like a per diem, but there is a small monthly reimbursement for "use of home office".

@zaq us vs. them being "abusers vs non-abusers"?

user315433
4:39 PM
Yeah, like banning a "not-so-insignificant portion of China" affects only abusers.

not to play devil advocate.... but still a pretty weird way to say that.
"Please, abusive users from China. Do stop being abusive, otherwise we will ban the other non-abusive users from your country that aren't you and you probably don't care about at all"

user315433
A ban affecting millions of people (what else would "not-so-insignificant portion of China" be?), motivated by some security considerations. Sounds familiar.

That's not "us vs. them" though

user315433
Sure, there is no "us vs them" in Trump's order either. It's a security concern.

user315433
(Just to get this out of the way: I'm Kasra-hating Nazi)

4:43 PM
@Bart what Zaq probably meant is that they are somehow creating a "us Vs them" scenario anyway. In that case it is "good users VS the Chinese hackers". The point seems to be that the message seems to associate the idea of "abusive user" to the idea of "Chinese user", even if indirectly.
but I sadly have to go for now, so if you like just leave a message here and I will try to reply later.

@ShadowWizard That's cool. But, I'm quite happy just saving money on gas not driving to an office every day; quite honestly, that more than makes up for what I spend on food.

@JonEricson is there anything stopping people from putting URL of a different user? (e.g. validating the email address)
@Shog9 hmm.... thought gas is cheap in the USA... and you can also use bike. ;)

@ShadowWizard If I had to bike to downtown Denver every day, they'd have to hire another chef just to compensate for my caloric intake.

> there was a developer error

(that's about 70 miles, mostly highway)

@Shog9 whoa... well, so move to a closer location.... :D

7:59 PM
@ShadowWizard No. I really hope we have a better system next year.

@JonEricson so there's a good chance to see posts like "How did I get this badge out of nowhere?!" on MSO/MSE? ;)
Unless the survey will actually look in the user credentials, can't see how it's possible. (oops, didn't mean for double reply)
(maybe sending email to the one provided in the final step, then a click there award the badge?)

@ShadowWizard If we hosted the survey ourselves, it would be easy. That's the direction I'd like to see us go.

@JonEricson I see. Well, that's not going to be easy... or cheap. Difficult choice to make.
(plus, surely there will be tons of bugs... unless you somehow do some beta testing before?)

@ShadowWizard I'm sure there would be. There were some bugs and plenty of annoyances with Surveymonkey even though we did do some beta testing there too.

@JonEricson but the bugs I saw reported were only wrong text, not something really "fatal". Unless I missed some bugs? I mean, Surveymonkey is a huge platform with tons of experience in this, so hard to believe they got serious bugs in their platform.

8:14 PM
@ShadowWizard yeah... There was maybe a 6-month window after the housing crash where you could get a decent living space in Denver for a decent price. Today, I'd take a pretty big hit for the proximity.
Much prefer working remotely :)

Which you're not.

@ShadowWizard The progress bar was awfully confused by our branching paths. It also abrupting halts all progress whenever a typo was corrected. I know they have a ton of experience that we don't. But it would be so nice to own the experience. (I'd also like to conduct other, smaller surveys throughout the year.)

For you, @M.A.R. ^
@JonEricson I see. Well, I totally agree, also helped to build internal survey system as part of a big project last year. It works just fine, though turned out more complicated than we expected.

"Couple of multiple choice questions, a progress bar, how difficult can it be?"

8:23 PM
@Bart actually, no progress bar or branches in our surveys. All the questions are right there. And it was still complicated. D:

Somehow the "simple" stuff always ends up being difficult

oh, that's sooooo true...
Out of something like 20 features I've added last month, those I thought would be most difficult turned out to be the most simple, and vice versa.

@ShadowWizard Thanks you

@M.A.R. my pleasure

@ShadowWizard I wrote a tic-tac-toe game a few weeks ago. It took a couple of hours including testing. I felt great about myself. The next day I found a bunch of bugs playing it again. Programming can be humbling.

8:32 PM
@JonEricson oh, that's very true. So where's the game? ;)

Steam Greenlight

@ShadowWizard Hiding away where nobody will ever see it. ;-) (I might put it on my itch.io page if I ever get the, um, itch to fix those bugs.)

Ah, that's where I keep my stuff as well. Where nobody will ever see it :D
I should really pick up some of my projects again actually. But just not motivation recently.

@JonEricson lol, know what you mean... :P
@Bart what projects for example?

Writing a small entity-component-system game engine. Some fluid simulation stuff I want to do. Some game networking. I have some ideas for a frame profiler.
Plenty of stuff

8:43 PM
yeah.... great ideas... great potential... but no time? :/

Some time. Got an hour or two each night. But that's generally after a full day of dev already. So myeah

@Bart those hours I have are spent on gaming...
(not writing games, playing existing games ;))

Same here, generally :D

haha, what games?

It has been Overwatch for some time. Lately we're picking up Minecraft again (Vanilla and Modded) on a server. Used to be CS GO for a long time. And playing some random stuff every now and then.

8:47 PM
@Jon how did you write Pico Waves? Java?
@Bart "we"? Real life friends? ;)

No actually. Online friends. Some of them streamers. Good fun though.

Well, I started Undertale as "random stuff" a while ago... nice game. /cc @Derpy
@Bart heh, still good. No console games?

I actually don't have any consoles at the moment. And shockingly (as a VR dev) not even VR games. :D
But I'm having my eye on the Switch

@ShadowWizard Lua. I used this thingy:

Oh man, yeah, I've been wanting to play with that
And TIS-100 ...
grrr

8:57 PM
@JonEricson nice! Wonder how it works behind the scenes.... So, you're not really a programmer?

@ShadowWizard There's a manual. I used to work on C and Perl projects, but since I go this CM gig I haven't done much of anything but SQL and simple text manipulation.
