@redredwine I haven't read up on this latest thing yet, but there's a type of attack that relies on analyzing the time it takes a server to respond; different payloads will take different amounts of time to retrieve or compress or whatever.
And since hot network questions is random each time a page is loaded...

Heads up: taking Stack Overflow offline in 6 minutes for a very brief outage in order to failover quickly to our replica database servers.
Taking Stack Overflow offline now, we’ll be right back!
And we’re back - that should be the only outage tonight.

I must repent. There are some butcher birds that like to come and beg for food. They are usually given meat fillets. But one butcher bird has become lazy. It comes & begs for food all the times. Q: What is the view on / process for handling dimwitted down votes?

GaryFrom time to time you encounter a meaning request, and provide a word which is obviously directly relevent. You reference your definition, provide a sample phrase etc. Yet someone still downvotes your answer. For clarification I am referring to questions here that are well formed. My question ...

They're much more fun to watch.
(Not to mention I'm sometimes technically one of them)

Don't people realize that they are potentially insulting the very community they're trying to address when writing such titles? "Hey buncha idiots, how do I handle you being idiots?"

@Bart Is idiot insulting? I always took it as an compliment ...

@Bart I guess when they're all fired up, blood covers their eyes and they can't see.

@Derpy Why are they attacking windmills?

@TIPS Donkey Xote

Tilting at windmills is an English idiom which means attacking imaginary enemies. The word "tilt", in this context, comes from jousting. The phrase is sometimes used to describe confrontations where adversaries are incorrectly perceived, or courses of action that are based on misinterpreted or misapplied heroic, romantic, or idealistic justifications. It may also connote an importune, unfounded, and vain effort against adversaries real or imagined for a vain goal. == Etymology == The phrase derives from an episode in the novel Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes, wherein protagonist Don Quixote...

Q: Flagging low quality answers: an experiment

Emilio PisantyThe handling of low-quality answers has been a point of contention and friction, on and off, for a fairly long time in this site. For low-quality questions, it happens that every so often someone sees a terrible answer, flags it as low quality, and finds out that it gets declined with the message...

It's certainly elegantly written.
Wait, that's just Georgia.

user315433
10:52 PM
So few of SE sites use serif fonts for main text... English, Math, Physics, and Christianity are all I know of (there may be more). The former three use Georgia, the latter uses Lusitana.

user315433
Now that I think of it, I'd rather have Lusitana than Georgia for math. (Because of my poor taste re: lining vs text figures, of course)

user315433
11:09 PM
Also: Chemistry, RPG, Judaism, and Patents have Georgia. This is all...

I like text figures in text.
And moreover, variable-width ones.
Text is not a spread sheet.
Of course, when summing columns, I want fixed-width digits.

user315433
Summary: 8 serif sites, 150 sans-serif sites. Of those 8, Georgia is used on 7, and Lusitana on 1. Serif seems to go well with hard sciences and religion.

user315433
I remember Christianity had Georgia at some point, possibly until the great CSS update of 2015...

user315433
@AndrewLeach I love Lusitana. I think it's a more elegant serif than Georgia, especially for the design of this site. My concern is that it may not render too well as body font. But, I'll switch the question and answer body text over to it tonight, and see if we get any complaints. In my experience, web fonts just don't render well on Windows, especially at smaller size. — Jin May 31 '13 at 19:23
