Birria(Spanish: [ˈbirja]) is a Mexican dish from the state of Jalisco. The dish is a spicy stew, traditionally made from goat meat or mutton, but occasionally from beef or chicken. The dish is often served at celebratory occasions, such as weddings and baptisms, and holidays, such as Christmas and Easter. It is also reputed as a hangover remedy. Preparation techniques vary, but the dish is often served with corn tortillas, onion, and lime. Traditionally, the meat is marinated in adobo spices. == In Mexican culture == Restaurants or street carts that serve birria are known as birrierias and exist...

Hmm, this is an interesting dilemma. On one hand, you increase awareness of why a term should be avoided. On the other hand, you increase awareness of the term -- and there's always those folks out there who will begin to use said term.
Former probably outweighs the latter though.

Well, what would you suggest we do? Other than doing the one thing we can do to prevent them from rep-whoring?

11:41 AM
@Derpy before the post -> shake your head and sigh apathetically. after the post -> handle it like normal rude/abusive behaviour dictates

[ SmokeDetector ] Bad keyword in body, link at end of body, pattern-matching website in body: Why do ladies NEED Lorella? by venni tenda on superuser.com

@Bart maybe trying to educate them? I understand that we don't want to use rude words to point at anybody... but I am wondering if not pointing at all is really the right thing. This "focus on the action, not on the user" thing seems a little too much. What I am asking to myself is if in the end it is actually good to not call the user misbehaving out on his action.

You could always try leaving a polite comment. But I would not make commenting a general recommendation, because that won't end well.

The whole post is about defending users from getting called out with some pretty rude words. But in doing so, it also feels like the initial assumption is biased too into thinking that there is always envy "he is going to have more rep than me" involved.
> Caring about getting lots of rep is a little like caring about getting lots of money - it seems to be a problem that is only diagnosed as afflicting other people.
This specifically bug me off a little.
The whole point in the "rep farm" problem, at least as far as I have seen it until now isn't that an user is giving too much importance to some "fake internet points (that happens to control what you can do on a fake internet site where you spend a lot of your time)", but that often users avoid the interest of the community for their own just for pursuing reps.
OT posts are meant to be closed, not answered.
Dupes are meant to be marked as such, not answered with a copy of the content you took from the original question

I fully agree. I do however not think the question we need to answer is "how do we handle rep-aficionados?" but rather "how do we close more efficiently?". Close stuff, delete stuff, and there won't be anything to answer.
Call me a pessimist, but I don't think we'll ever achieve the former.

11:53 AM
@Bart the problem is that once again the discussion is based on what is the perception of the problem on SO.

I don't follow?

I mean that it is reasonable to think that SO can react fast with its numbers.
It is pretty unreasonable to think that a site like SharePoint should just react, because there are so few active users that it will take days.

Ah, SO-centric view of problems that also exist on other networks you mean.

Exactly. My point was that often people bases their consideration on the numbers SO have, forgetting that many of the minor sites in the network can't hope to do that.

True, but still, in a network that's essentially "I've got some shiny shiny for you if you give me content", it's going to be hard to get enough of them turned around to not be bothered by it any more. So my approach would still be to find easier/faster ways to close content. Even if that means tailored solutions for smaller sites within the network.
I don't know, 3 out of 5 close votes and you need at least X amount of rep to answer.
Or maybe simply 3 votes to close instead of 5
Or if it has 3 duplicate votes, send the answerer to the duplicate as soon as he hits the answer button with a big "Hey, we saw you tried to answer this, but your answer may already exist here and if not, add it here".
Plenty of problems with all those suggestions, but that would be my approach.
Then again, I don't really participate outside of SO, and even on SO I don't participate much atm, so none of it may make any sense.
yes, I am procrastinating atm

12:02 PM
@Bart I agree on this point. What I don't get is why there is this focus on "call actions, not users" every time we get to an user behavior problem.
I can see this is very convenient from a moderation point of view: the less you call out names, the less flame wars you will have....

Because by and large we're twats. And telling any large userbase anything remotely approaching "if you see a problem with a user, call him out on it" is never going to end well.
Take accept rate for example (you we're around at that time?). It was an instant mark to many of "this user is doing something wrong, let me make sure he knows how wrong he is".

I... guess this must be what I wanted to hear.

Any many of the bad examples weren't even cases of users being intentionally rude. Most of them had the best intentions for everyone. But get even the nicest of formulations slightly wrong, and you have left a mark on the user and a stain on the site.

@Bart I saw that. And I also see that we still are there with the "please accept the answers" comments and people ignoring those.

Nothing is ever perfect. Nothing ever will be. But a focus on content over users tends to (in my limited experience) prevent sh*tstorms from happening.

None of that. I mentioned I agreed with the answer, but that smaller sites might also need their own approach/settings.

@Bart and I noticed too that the linked question from that answer has a reply with 300+ votes that contains this...
> A mandatory voting dropdown menu should be required for ALL DOWNVOTING. This should not affect overall rep points, but if people simply cannot be bothered to say why a question/answer is bad, offenders will NEVER get better. The menu should be simple; again, it would just be helpful to know "too long", "already asked", "too general", "too short", "not clear", "bad grammar", "other" …anything is better than nothing.

^ flag the cat. FLAG HIM!

... well, y'know... I can kick now. Just sayin'.
(that's a hint: please don't go down the not-constructive road @bjb568)

@Bart when comments become heated it is common to see them all nuked at once. I assume there were more comments there, not just yours?

I think I was the only one who commented ... but maybe.

the real question is: what thread is the cat meowing about?

What did you say in the comment? @Bart?

Probably threads in his favourite ball of yarn @Derpy

The idea that erasing a word from the community's allowed vocabulary would make discussions somehow more productive and "nicer" is completely absurd. Using labels to identify and categorize users who we can't treat cordially, who have demonstrated they are on the site for the wrong reason, and form the antithesis of a content-, rather than people-based repository of knowledge allows us to effectively talk about these problem users and find solutions to the problems related to their existence. Marking problems as problems isn't offensive, it's honest and it's above all productive. — bjb568 23 mins ago

@ShadowWizard I reposted it.

That whole comment boils down to "someone is rude, I can be rude too". Yeah... no.

@bjb568 you reposted @Bart's comment?

@hichris123 Curt isn't rude. Curt is constructive, rude isn't.

Completely agree. Give those who care the means to (more) efficiently close/delete whatever needs that action, and take away the opportunity for rep-whoring sooner. And maybe that even means custom measures for some of the smaller sites. Large communities can count on large active user-bases, but what works there may not apply to some of the smaller sites within the network.
