I'm fiddling with socket code at the moment.
Why hack?
You call that hack.
Sounds like fun
02:01

Why?
Sockets are fun to play with
Oh you mean electrical sockets not HTTP sockets
No I mean ALL sockets, including HTTP.

I personally think dangerous can often be fun. (Provided you don't screw up)
And that Spam's final spam flag was mine. Haha spammers.

A lot of spam going around now.
And that is definitely k.
@soup As Shog said, this exists as of the beginning of May. Since Japan is pretty-much exclusively one time zone, nights and weekends ended up with a string of bumped questions on the hour. Bumping is good, repetitive bumping not so good, so we limited bumping to times when there isn't a bumped post in the previous 5 active posts.
(and as he said, we can look at up to two months of stats for bumping since we implemented that at the same time -- of course, when I say "we" I mean @Shog9 can, because the logs are a fancy hidden thing, but point is that the data exists if we want to look at it)
user315433
02:36
Cool. Back when I joined Web Apps, it was a stream of communitybumps every night. Got better over time, thanks to more active voting in the past year. I like bumping in principle, but in practice many of the Q&A it brings up are ... uninspiring.
user315433
So having a front page made of that is a bit off-putting, potentially making the problem of low engagement even worse.
user315433
If the ja.SO rule was made network-wide, I don't think anyone would complain.

Q: Finally earthquake prediction

Mostafa KamelI'm Dr Mustafa , an astrophysics researcher from Egypt. I've written a Scientific paper about a possible new fundamental universal force, which I refer to as "Cover cosmic". I believe this force is responsible for several natural phenomen on the ground or in space a , But I will talk about a s...

> Until now, I can determine the location and date of any earthquake stronger than 7.0 degrees .
What is a "degree" in terms of earthquakes?
magnitude, prolly
(and shouldn't you be using radians?)
Probably. I guess such terminology confuses experts...
This is not a theory. It is not a hypothesis. It is not a rational argument. It is a claim to have written a scientific paper without any reference. It is a claim to discovered a massive change in the Earth's rotational speed, which is in direct contradiction of a multitude of established scientific methods and measurements. It is a motley collection of wild unsubstantiated claims. I can't make out if this is a hoax or a delusion. — Gordon Stanger 31 mins ago
sigh this user also posted his "theory" a month ago
user202362
I really hope the next major earthquake (Magnitude 7.0 and above) near Silicon Valley can be and will be predicted and announced.
user202362
02:51
It would be irony if it doesn't ...
user202362
I don't know why people think themselves so smart when they are obviously so dumb
user202362
I mean ... it's okay to be dumb, you didn't ask to be born dumb
user202362
Stop thinking you are smart though, because you are not
user202362
We are not
A Japanese game company halted cancelled their 4th-series of "disaster survival" game because its 3rd-series' (sold in 2009) setting was a big earthquake on 2011 March in Japan. Talking about a prediction...
user202362
03:04
Yeah ... and next 'major break through' in technology is VR - if you can't bring real useful innovation, let's just cover our eyes and pretend all great innovations have already happened in those imaginary worlds.
user202362
sad
user202362
pathetic
You do realize that not every smart person is working on VR?
Capitalism kinda means that companies will go do what they think will make them money. If that's VR, great.
VR is a thing that the media just loves because it looks weird and is kinda interesting. That doesn't mean it's the next major breakthrough
If it's useful, companies will make useful stuff and people will buy it. If it's not useful, it will die.
user202362
I am still looking forward to Mars colonization, self driving cars, A.I. cleaners and chefs
Capitalism kinda means that companies will produce not-so-great-stuff and market it to recoup some of their losses before it dies.
03:08

user202362
@Undo If this is true, casinos would all be died. But the fact is that casinos are guaranteed to make money given enough people because probability. Making money has little to do with being useful.

user202362
03:10
I guess we have different definition of 'being useful'
user202362
illegal drugs are useful too according to your definition
Yes
user202362
...
If people will pay for goods or services, they want those goods and services. Therefore there is incentive for companies (or individuals) to sells better versions of those goods and services for less money to capture more of the market
user202362
true, thus the lacking of true innovation/break through
user202362
03:12
exactly my point
user202362
because true innovation/break through are high risks
@Telkitty I'm not exactly caught up on that market, but... supply/demand is still a thing in black markets
@Telkitty Sure, so parties have to weigh those risks
But if it takes a $500,000 investment to get something that will probably make $600,000 more in profit, someone's gonna do it eventually

Has anyone rated languages by their score/answer ratio? So others would know what to learn in order to earn more repz fast.
@soup Hmm probably not.
@soup Suspect [regex] would be the top of the list, if you count it as a 'language'
In reality it's more like a bunch of little sublanguages
@soup beginner [android] questions
though, [java] if it's restricted to language.
But I guess top-5 language tags should give repz fast.
user315433
In my profile the range is from python 59/39 (slightly better if restricted to a library, sympy 66/33) to google-apps-script 60/100.
user315433
But the sample size is small and skewed.
03:27
@meatball [iOS] beats out [Android], 2.4504 vs. 2.3048
user315433
And the winner is... [git-branch]
user315433
But not a language
27.23046 for git-branch
Ignore that old question ;)
@soup well that's a better query :P
user315433
03:29
Among actual language tags, though... python-2.x has ratio=6
user315433
Ignoring version tags too, the leader appears to be Haskell, 5.3
Should we limit to more recent questions? I think older questions (pre-strict rules) might skew the statistic.
@Undo it's basically JavaScript with optional strict typing.. it's good if you're a hardcore C# dev but if you don't really give a shit to use interfaces and types properly or consistently it basically becomes JavaScript with <any>s everywhere

Q: Should ExpressionEngine be closed down?

UniKittyI visited ExpressionEngine.SE and it seems kinda dead... Almost everything on that page was bumped by Community, and no one is active. Even chat is dead: I think it should be taken down as no one actually uses it.

Area51 is only for creating sites. Once launched, post on their meta.
Why's that on A51 and not Meta?
The meta is dead
14:32
I see you flower...I see you ninja'ing
Then post after 2 weeks on MSE
Maybe all questions ever to be asked are on their site now. They are finished.
Only needs polishing here and there to keep it shiny
Why not just post on MSE now?
Would it be closed as pertaining to only a certain site?
I'd guess so.
14:44
By me, yes
It's kinda MSEish feeling. And meta.exeng doesn't actually have anything on it.
Why do we bother in the first place?
Not all sites needs to be like SO, with its huge traffic and huge crap?
