@soup is he implying that there are no "hate" comments on Stack Overflow?
Because they do happen, although they usually stick to teasing or derising.

@Nzall of course there are. But they are flagged and removed rather quickly.

@ShadowWizard Even if they are dealt with efficiently, they still have a negative effect on user retention. Downvotes are similar. How would you feel if you were looking for help with something, only to be told by multiple people "we don't like your question" without any explanation as to why?
I still think that if you downvote a question, you should be required to explain why you downvoted, similar to how you need to give a reason to flag

@Nzall I would try to understand what went wrong and improve it. Those who think SO is a personal help forum are those who get offended by downvotes.
It's like going to a foreign country and getting offended when hearing something in language you don't understand. Instead, it's better to learn the language and realize it's not meant to offend.

12:03 PM
@ShadowWizard IMHO it's more like going to a new pub, asking for a certain beverage, then getting told off by the other bar patrons for ordering the wrong type of beer

@Nzall Wow! An ingenious idea! How original!

Without downvotes, the only way to mark something as bad are the comments. And naturally comments like "this is bad" would lead to unpleasant discussions. That's what @Sklivvz is trying to say.

@bjb568 I don't post on here often. This idea probably has been done to death, but I don't know why

SO doesn't need user retention. It doesn't need more questions. Hell, it doesn't even need more answers.

@Nzall each and his own view.... guess we can't convince each other. :)

12:04 PM
What Stack Overflow needs is better content, not more.

related:

@bjb568 edit all da thingz?

@Nzall What's wrong with that scenario?
@Nzall Because it's both obvious and obviously unworkable.

@bjb568 guess by "told off" he means with an offensive attitude like shouting and yelling.

@ShadowWizard yeah, sort off
Different people have different tastes

12:06 PM
So what?

@Nzall true.

You go to a social place, you fit in and assimilate. The place doesn't assimilate to you.

and in this case, if someone gets told off for doing the wrong thing in a certain situation, instead of figuring out what he did wrong, he probably would just avoid the situation

If you get yelled at, well, you should have looked and listened before doing.
@Nzall Great. We don't need more people. Have them go away.
They don't learn. They never do.
Learning doesn't scale.

@bjb568 some learn. Most don't.
So in the end of the day, I agree it's better with the current way.

12:08 PM
@bjb568 Maybe a pub isn't the right idea. Imagine it's a restaurant and the waiter is screaming at you "why did you take white wine with your steak" instead of a friendly suggestion "might I suggest sir to get the Bordeaux?

@ShadowWizard Right. And we optimize for the masses.

@bjb568 And why do we not want more people?

@Nzall The service is from the user to the community, not the other way around.

@ShadowWizard VLQ flags still cast an automatic downvote when marked helpful. To demonstrate, find a question with 4 close votes on it. Flag as VLQ and then vote to close. Closing marks the flag as helpful; the score of question will drop by 1. (This is easier to pull off on sites other than SO, because VLQ flags are often disabled on SO questions)

Shog9This is super-complicated. The proper solution here would be to ensure that automatic deletion gives votes time to "age" and be vetted by the fraud scripts before taking action.

and I expect the number of posts affected to be low? Or is it really do everything to keep the value?

@Telkitty I had to look up 100 km/h. Turns out, it's only a bit over 60MPH, which should be perfectly safe on a straight, well-maintained road.

@Shog9 We're not the ones under 100 degrees of heat.
Fahrenheit is so damn complicated

Not really. You want to live in a place that mostly stays between 0F and 100F year-round. If you spend too long above or below that, you're gonna be unhappy.
C is useful in situations where you expect freezing and boiling to be the normal range of temperature
But that mostly doesn't involve, y'know, weather

@Shog9 Well, at my place it does get to lower than 0 deg F sometimes.

here too. But only a few days out of the year

Slaving away doing java...

@Shog9 but me science ppl. me love understandable estimates

I used to live in a place that routinely got < 0F, and that was kind of a hassle. Buried pipes would freeze and such.

Fahrenheit no understand
Chemicals together strong

Again, C is great if you're working with, say, solvents and specific boiling and evaporation temperatures
Although I think folks tend to over-estimate how convenient that scale is
I mean, where I'm at, water doesn't boil at 100C

Let's all switch to Kelvin?

@Shog9 Neither does it where I live.
@Shog9 I guess it's convenient if you use it.
