@SNAFU Huh, maybe that was why my internet went out.

Public displays of affection are acts of physical intimacy in the view of others. What is an acceptable display of affection varies with respect to culture and context. Displays of affection in a public place, such as the street, are more likely to be objected to, than similar practices in a private place with only people from a similar cultural background present. Some organizations have rules limiting or prohibiting public displays of affection. Physical affection has been defined as "any touch intended to arouse feelings of love in the giver and/or the recipient." == HistoricalEdit == 2...

I just don't understand: how hard can it be?

user202362

user202362
animals do it all the times

@tchrist Never happens with Node.js.
With Node.js we have this useful notion called the "character"…

Wikipedia runs on PHP ;p

That's the problem, right there.

user202362
1:51 AM
the problem is that the definition of chars/strings are getting more confusing over the years

@Telkitty Example?
I suspect rather than some people have merely gotten it wrong.

user202362
right, I am not too familiar with PHP, but in C++, there is string, then there is CString, and there is wstring

user202362
in fact even before unicode was widely accepted, borland C++, Visual C++ & C++ (on linux for example) all had their own string libraries

user202362
and over the years it gets more confusing because now everything has to support unicode

You know, that's all very complicated.
There are code points and sequences of code points.
See how easy that is?
People who confuse bytes with characters are equally apt to confuse integers with pointers, with equal misfortune in both cases.

user202362
2:02 AM
well, not everyone is good with programming like you are with perl

You wouldn't know.

@tchrist Chrome on Windows will now have proper font fallback. :D
Live in M52... so a couple months to stable.

user202362
I am amazed at the lacking of effort to standardize char/string across languages/different compiler & interpreters

If you let a code point stand for a character and a sequence of code points stand for a string, what does that gain you?

user202362
2:10 AM
you would have thought the same string of binaries should display the same thing regardless of what language you are using or what OS/browser it's displayed on right

And what does it not get you?
@Telkitty Um, no.
You misunderstand.
Display is irrelevant.
Why doesn't my vt100 display colors, eh?

user202362
it's very relevant, because eventually most programs are made by humans for humans

user202362
did I say most, I mean, pretty much all of them

"Display" is a user problem not a programming one.

user202362
misinterpretations arise from displaying the same thing in different forms

2:12 AM
Concrete examples, or it didn't happen.

user202362
@tchrist then stop complaining about 2 :p

THAT is a programming bug.
It has nothing to do with display.
If you chop a "w" in half, should you be left with a "v"?
Somebody seems to have thought so.
Characters are atomic: they cannot be split in two.
Somebody forgot that.

@tchrist Now for color fonts... maybe I can fix this one. Probably not - everything's pretty complicated.

user202362
yeah someone put in an entry in 32 bit database and now it has rolled over to a 64 bit database and incorrect things are display, we should blame it on the programmers because damn, why can't they think ahead for a decade

I apologize that you do not understand this.
But not that I shall spend no more time on it.

Pretty much.
She hates me, but I try to bond with her on a daily basis.
We've started feeding her water with a syringe (because she doesn't hydrate enough) and I have a feeling she doesn't like it (she does everything she can to try to stop me).
Well, she could try using claws and biting me, so I guess she's not doing everything but she's very squirmy and evasive.

@bjb568 I couldn't make sense of the question.

I don’t want to get excited too early, but we’re looking at very promising CDN/DDoS numbers. Low enough for https://-by-default. Stay tuned.
The entire reason Stack Overflow isn’t HTTPS by default today is performance. It’s a huge perf impact, currently. We’re working on it.
Does performance really matter that much, though? I mean, obviously your users don't want the page to load in 1 second. But if it loads in 400 ms vs. 300... does that really matter?

user315433
If loading one page, doesn't matter. If browsing a site for a period of time, I'm more likely to stop sooner if it feels less responsive.

That's true. I wonder what the threshold is for determining slowness... I though there was a UX question on that, but I can't find it.
