Hmmm, @appveyor pro trial isn’t going well. 8 minute queue times to even start a build, then inexplicable failures: https://t.co/FEU7EMum0c
I wondered if this signaled more unit tests for SE... and then I realized it was for Opserver & Dapper.

@tchrist You got bears roaming around on your suburban street? 😅 Amazing ...

@Telkitty I don't live in a suburb, how ick is that?!

user202362
I live in a suburban area - 40 minutes walk to the national park, same amount of time drive to the CBD

user202362

user202362
@tchrist something like that?

user202362
I remember you got a big tree branch on your roof too ..

2:15 AM
@Telkitty Certainly that looks my county, but I live within the city limits.
And yes, sometimes we have lions and bears and prairie wolves in town.

user202362
@tchrist lemme guess, they are all very shy, unless they see garbage, in which the case they become incredulously courageous?

@Telkitty The bears, pretty much.
I have a picture of one in the tree behind my house here somewhere.
We actually don't know how many lions or bears we have here.

2:44 AM
It's un-knowable.

user202362
I am not sure 'cute' exactly describes the situation but ... ✨💖

user202362
@tchrist cougars are not true lions are they?

user202362
they are more like the mountain kitties ... bigger ones of course

@Telkitty Panthera leo != Puma concolor Common names mean nothing.
Except to those who use them.
A mountain lion and a leopard are of the same size.

What to Do If You Meet A Lion

@Telkitty Prey flee. Don't be a flea.

But fleas flee! Should I be a non-flea fleer, free of flea-dom? Shall I flee freely?

Fly you fools.

@Stormwind - you are active on a number of our sites. We expect answers to be more than one sentence, and to be corroborated, usually. As others have noted - your question belongs on the ell meta, not here. — Oded ♦ 17 hours ago

Q: How to write correct loops?

Q: Is there now no logical "OR" operator with the new search engine?

hippietrailA lot of people were unhappy that the old search defaulted to OR, and I agreed. With the change of Stack Exchange's search engine it now defaults to AND and everybody is happy. But actually sometimes I do want to use OR. There's plenty of concepts that can be expressed in different ways or with...

@JonasCz Merged accounts is the correct answer.
Merges and migration are runners' up to caching when it comes to explaining strangeness.

@AaryanDewan A line is tangent to a curve at point P iff 1) the line, curve, and point intersect and 2) you can choose any point Q on the curve arbitrarily close to P, the ratio of the distance between Q and the line to the distance between Q and P is less than e, where you can make |e| arbitrarily small. — bjb568 6 mins ago
Dunno if this is right.

I think I've always heard it expressed that the difference in slope between PQ and the tangent is < e but basically the same idea
I also took Calculus like 20 years ago
I think you would also need to specify the "distance between Q and the line" as the length of the perpendicular from Q to the line to ensure you got the smallest distance?

user315433
@bjb568 Correct, except in 1) I'd say that "the line and curve intersect at the point".

user315433
One does not normally talk about line intersecting a point. There is a term "incidence" that could be used here ("point is incident to a line"), but this is for more technical contexts.

10:31 PM
@Marshmallow Bah, if we define lines, curves, and points as subsets of R*^2, their intersection is the set union.
Ooh, that'd be kewl, in R*^2 the point can be an infinitesimal circle. Or square!
