Candidate #12 looks like a strong contender despite not being a meta-household name.

user202362
always amazed at how most of the candidates manage to find tavern

9:48 AM
@zaq that is indeed a good candidate. Would it be required to be active on meta to get a feel of it? Or do they run the risk on being slaughtered the first time they are called out?

10:44 AM
@zaq Another one who didn't do much reviewing until the election.
A flurry of activity on Nov 2, some activity in August, then a gap that dates back to May.

I'm not sure I'm happy that this question has been dupe close voted: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/286649/…
Am I supposed to leave 404 errors on SEDE unreported because it has a common root cause?
Anyway: on the front page of SEDE the icons for beer.se and meta.beer.se no longer load. It needs alcohol and so do I ...

@JNat I have an high-prio issue send to you with the Contact Us form. This can't wait. (cc @Shog9)

3:25 PM
@rene sounds scary

Might be, yes.

Well then
@rene I assume you're not at liberty to tell what it is.

better not, no

@rene thanks; we'll figure it out tomorrow. Don't have too much fun please.

I will not, thanks

7:26 PM
@ProgramFOX I fixed all the DD problems and upgraded to 16.04 LTE.
Whoops, I used an old DB copy. I'll fix it soon.

7:41 PM
@bjb568 Yup, I can confirm that it's fixed. Thanks!

@Shog9 who is @ranthony? Hybrid of @Rathony and @randal'thor? ;)

user315433
Could be a reference to someone's inclination to rant (and get suspended...)

@zaq weird, the meta account shows no suspension reason, while the main account does show. Bug?

user315433
It's always like that, as far as I remember.

7:56 PM

Q: Suspension reason shows on main, but not on meta

angussidneyI recently discovered that there was a high-rep user suspended on Arqade, so that they could calm down a bit. When I was looking at their profile, I noticed that the suspension reason was shown on their main profile, but not on their meta profile. Main: Meta:

meh

8:09 PM
@ShadowWizard Next time I have to respond from my phone with greasy hands, it'll be Raytheony.

@ShadowWizard maybe you can also suspend the meta account?

8:27 PM
@Shog9 solution: baby wipes. You should visit LH more often. :)
@rene you mean the suspension on the meta account is separate? I don't think so... Shog can confirm though.

Can't you be only suspended on the site meta?

Q: Should suspensions on parent sites follow through to meta sites?

Mark HendersonIf a user is suspended on the main site, should that suspension carry over to the meta site? For example, vgv8 is here asking about their suspension on SF and SU. These questions should be asked on the MSF/MSU but they can't, because they're also suspended from there. Surely a suspension should...

so looks like you're right. Weird!

I'm always right .... runs ....

@rene not so fast.....

A: What happens when a user is suspended from a meta site?

ManishearthThis is outdated, we can no longer suspend from just meta. All suspensions have to be carried out from main (the mod message/suspend option is greyed out on meta). When a user is suspended on main, the suspension carries over to meta. MSO is an exception, as always.

So you were wrong! :D
Probably it's still separate behind the scenes, e.g. different tables or fields

yeah, I guess so

8:35 PM
taking a petal as punishment for being wrong

I think the update statement is not complete on the meta profile

@rene might be... guess only a dev can tell. @Oded isn't pingable anymore... @Adam as well... balpha is, but I won't dare...

You don't want to involve the managers for subtle bugs ...

@rene true! There's one single "low level" developer pingable... guess who? ;)

yup, the newest recruit. Reminds me of my army service..... :D
The newer you are, the dirtier your tasks are. :)
Wonder if "Stay pingable in Tavern" is on the requirements list? lol

> Last I checked, you are not forced to leave a comment on every answer you review in LQP. When in doubt, don't. Otherwise it just makes you sound stupid. -- meta.stackoverflow.com/a/337812

user315433
Some people are under impression that if none of the canned comments fit, one shouldn't vote to delete at all.

user315433
(Forgot where that was voiced, one of the countless metas...)

user315433
LQRQ is in the best shape of all the queues. In other aspects, SO should prepare for post-review future, where the reviewers who still give a crap become a tiny minority without much influence on the outcomes.

Q: A new policy of closure: November 2016

orthocresolWhat's the current homework policy? The current HW policy is laid out in this post. In essence, only blatant homework copy-pastes should be closed. These often get closed unilaterally by moderators. Why do we need to do this? What's wrong with status quo? There have previously been disagreeme...

9:17 PM
@zaq Hans is pretty spot on there ...

user315433
Maybe get rid of VLQ flag on answers.

user315433
E.g., answers of the form "Use this library [github link]" aren't great but I don't see a compelling reason to delete them.

Hmm, not sure if I like that. I foresee that after following three links I endup on SO again.
See this [blog] , blog article, for further info see [codeproject] and on the codeproject article, see [awesome answer on SO]

user315433
Maybe, but nothing says it has to be the only answer. Or that having no links to follow is better.

@zaq Even better: one could just edit them rather than saying "Here! I don't feel like doing anything about them so let's make 6 people spend time on it!"
Although, to be fair, I did do that... many times...

user315433
9:23 PM
Scenario A: the [use this library] answer is one among others. Then people will read those others, if they are more useful.

user315433
Scenario B: the [use this library] answer is the only one. Then it's better than nothing.

user315433
My criterion for NAA flagging these days: the person is trying to get something instead of trying to give something.

Not sure I get that. Can you elaborate?

user315433
Trying to get something: "Have you solved this problem? I'm looking for the same thing". Or "Can you add some code to your question?"

user315433
Trying to give something: "this library can help with this sort of thing".

9:28 PM
Ah, OK, but that assumes that answers can be a kind of replacement for Google search results

user315433
The "read this blog post, it will help" answers I still flag, though... maybe I shouldn't. The existence of Web Archive weakens the argument about link rot.

I still think read this is not useful but if it has a bit extra it might be OK-ish. I mean, often a single phrase is enough to get you on the right track

user315433
If the question is important for enough people, someone will eventually post something better than a link. But most questions aren't important.

How about a feature where a link will be automatically replaced with [title of webpage you linked to](link) similar to what happens if you paste a link to an post on the same site
@zaq and for importance we still rely on (down) votes and views?

user315433
Important means it comes up in search results for sufficiently many people.

9:37 PM
so the referrer is important then

user315433
If they are developers, and they are unhappy about being sent somewhere by the answer, someone will write up a better answer.

user315433
One of podcasts, long ago, mentioned how many answers get posted after the user lands on SO from Google search. Something like 50% was said there... Would be nice to have an update on that statistics. (And also on whether the question answered is the question they first landed on.)

@zaq that 50% seems very high
for today standards

user315433
That's what they said on the podcast too.

I guess you would see that in the distribution of new Q's and new A's.

user315433
9:53 PM
I think one has to look at the referrer data in server logs, which we don't have access too.

@zaq sounds a bit like this FR but then for a better cause.

@ProgramFOX Interestingly, after I screwed stuff up I nuked it and it was fixed by default.
Also, SSH completely refuses to authenticate root for some reason. I wasn't even aware of an option to make it not authenticate root. So I had to nuke it again and create a new user before doing the reboot after upgrading to 16.04.
Sysadmining is some crazy stuff.

user315433
I remember Nick Craver mentioning that one can't ssh as root to SO.

user315433
FR: a way to search the tweets of a Twitter user.

user315433
You guys know we don’t allow root to have SSH access…right? Evidently some “hackers” missed the memo.

user315433
10:04 PM
@bjb568 Hire Nick Craver to do it for you.

I know it's bad to have root be given SSH. My solution before was to just disable the entire user.
Meh.
New Ubuntu seems to be more colorful.
