@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M sure, focus on that, but when you think about it, its multimotion components not utterly? Well?!?

@Bart It's multimotion components are definitely utterly. There's no doubt in that.

I guess that's settled then.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M, did you figure out your CB question?

2:13 PM
@Andy I've been procrastinating a bit. I'm not sure if it's even on-topic.
It's just
> How can I get people to participate in editing?
. . . on ELL.

Seems on topic. I'd mention that it's an SE site because already having the "gamification" in place will change the types of responses.

Well yeah, except editing only has two far-fetched - for many ELLers - badges for editing, like any other SE.
It only has 3 copy-editors and that's really bad for a site that big.
So @Andy I take your word . . . I might come with the question in about a few hours, after I'm done with some homework.

Good luck on the homework :)

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M There are more badges for editing. We also have explainer, refiner, illuminator
There is also archeologist
I'm not very active on ELL, but I don't really see the problem.

I'm not familiar with ELL, but the amount of badge holders is hardly an indication IMO.

2:22 PM
@Wytha but those have other requirements that makes them look more like an answer badge.
@S.L.Barth Well it's an indication this time. :/
I've seen people edit for the sake of the three answer/edit badges on chem, but not on ELL.

Badges should not be the primary motivation. A desire to make the site better should be.

@TCh knows. We're trying to deal with big ol' problems and a start would be a trillion edits . . . And we don't get much editors.

Ok, so you have a lot of posts that need editing....?

@S.L.Barth Of course that's the motive of Dam, TC, Snailboat, Jimsug and a bunch o' others, and hopefully me, but it can't lure new people into editing.
@S.L.Barth Basically, every post on ELL needs editing unless proven otherwise.

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M You're saying it's worse than Stack Overflow...?!

2:25 PM
Yes.

I'll have to keep that in mind. My sock puppet FractionalRadix could use some points.

That might be too extreme a view for passionate people on ELL, but I first damn what I need to fix.

@S.L.Barth Unclear.

FWIW chem's meta is a heaven and the editors are way better; I get to ask things like this on meta:

(@S.L. could you join us on Friday? ;)

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I might be able to, but I'm not on Chem.SE . I'd have to brush up my chemistry knowledge before I could engage in retagging there.

2:32 PM
K.

Taking a look at ELL. "bellow" instead of "below"... the user who asked that question is, indeed, a learner.
(Which, just to be clear on this, is fine. They're asking because they're learning so mistakes are to be expected).

@inɒzɘmɒЯ.A.M I can participate in both ELL and chem, but on both sites I can only suggest edits
So I'm not sure how helpful I would be, honestly

@wythagoras Sure, we'd love your help.
I think watching a few edits could do.

May the user who downvoted explain their downvote? Don't downvote before you read the question.cybermonkey 1 min ago
one of my pet hates about the SE model: those who downvote without explanation

I guess Tim Post lost his keys again...
But I've never seen things getting better when the OP showed anger.
What sometimes does work is a more neutral "How could I improve this?"

@cybermonkey Making assumptions never ends up well. :/

May the user who downvoted explain their downvote? If you think I've misunderstood something, please enlighten me- it'll help me improve my knowledge. One of the few things which I'm not an expert in (or near-expert) with computers is domains, and I'd really like to fill that gap. — cybermonkey 8 secs ago

It's funny at first, but quickly becomes annoying. Furthermore, because your bot is undocumented, we really can't understand how it works or what chat messages trigger a response from it. Who had the bright idea to store date/time information in spreadsheets as floating point numbers on the scale of 1 = one day?

user259867
So, for example, 8:00 AM becomes 0.3333333333333 which gets truncated to some precision.

user259867
Then a user thinks "let's filter the rows based on timestamp, I want those with 8:00 AM"...

This is why spreadsheets hate the living.
