Q: Why are my wires melting together?

EnderI'm currently neck deep in an eletrical shortage issue with my BMW 316i. I found the wires that are blowing my fuses, and it's bad. Like at least 5ft of 8 or more wires fused together behind my dashboard bad. I'm NOT looking forward to replacing said wires. I'm concerned that after I do replace ...

read that wives ^^
:D

Don't hit the breaks in a BMW

yeah
> The automobile brake was not invented until 1895. Before this, someone had to remain in the car at all times, driving in circles until passengers returned from their errands.

Q: What are all the facts that Core 3 babbles about in Portal 2?

Shekhar_ProI just finished Portal 2 and found the facts by Core 3, the "fact" core, quite humorous and informative (I don't believe him). Since time was short, I couldn't listen to all the facts he might say. Does anyone have a collection of all the facts Core 3 can say?

Anyone have the Lenovo Superfish private key yet? Can you pass it along please? Asking for a friend . . .

:D

@Frank In Victorian England, a commoner was not allowed to look directly at the Queen, due to a belief at the time that the poor had the ability to steal thoughts. Science now believes that less than 4% of poor people are able to do this.
^ nice.

@Frank About 3 years ago, they gave away licenses of the original portal, for free. I took advantage of that.. awesome game.

@LynnCrumbling I see

@Frank Still haven't played portal 2, though...

It's more fun.

Got my car back. All fixed.. $338 later. :(

@LynnCrumbling wow what was wrong with it?

Hmm, @bjb have close votes left?

Do you have votes left though?

yeah

Aww. Well, I'll just poke some unsuspecting person item like... @Doorknob?

Should I use an HTTP header instead of <meta charset="UTF-8"/>?
The naziis say that meta tag are an HTML thing, not an XHTML thing.
And I'm supposed to use xml:lang

11:35 PM
@hichris123 GRRR 25 minutes and I can CV.
@Frank One of the main coolant hoses running into the block didn't like going from 0F to 190F.
@Frank And the part comes in matched pairs.

@LynnCrumbling oh noes
sounds like a mess

@Frank So.. $25 in coolant (vw takes special stuff), $180 hose, $130 labor :(

@LynnCrumbling not bad

speaking of my car... time to jump in it and head home.
'night all!

I'd have searched junkyards for the hose first tho
@LynnCrumbling ok, cya!

11:38 PM
@Frank If it had happened in spring, summer, or fall ... and had a garage, and not a carport.. I'd have done the labor and gotten the hose bottom dollar.

She's actually explicitly allowed to (and often does) claim Scratch and Codecademy as "homework". Would love to see research about screen time influence on tech choices; perhaps consider another Question for that? — Erica 1 hour ago
oh god
I feel like I need to ask another parenting question.

screen time kills
or it used to back with crt monitors ;)

I agree with Lightness, for once:
I don't understand why a two-year old needs a tablet (please, "iPad" is a brand) at all. What is wrong, pray tell, with books? — Lightness Races in Orbit 38 mins ago

@hichris123 I've seen tablets used to advantage for mentally challenged children, with some special apps and a good therapist...

That's... different.

ik
that's why I didn't comment

Restricting children, especially as old as middle schoolers at all on screen time can be negative to their motivation to pursue tech fields. For example, programmers typically need to spend at least several hours per day online, and their motivation is stifled by restriction. Also, general knowledge/news can only be obtained from the internet: podcasts, blogs, videos, and articles on subjects of interest in addition to educational websites can be very beneficial. — bjb568 1 hour ago
Just... uh... how can I respond to this? Oh right. No!!!!

well it's true...

11:47 PM
Yeah, but "tech fields" and "programming" are hobbies.
This person I think hit the mark:
@bjb568 you're so right. I was always getting restricted to a very limited time, and if it wasn't for my insistence and my parents not having nerves to fight with me, I wouldn't be a reverse engineer now. I strongly believe that if the child is smart enough to learn technology and not simply lose time with activities like e.g. chatting (which is a perfectly fine social activity, as long as it's not the only one), he/she should spend as much time as allowed by the body. — AcidShout 10 mins ago

"Your child will feel like shit and itch like crazy for a week." ... and possibly die. — Duncan Bayne Aug 17 '11 at 7:31
@hichris123 … that develop into professions

now I'm not really into techie stuff, so I basically let the kids do what they're good at in their free time, so long as it looks to be helpful in some future career.

@bjb568 So? I think people-skills & certain other things are much more important.
I spent (and still spend) a lot of my free-time talking & reading. That a) made me a better talker, but also b) taught me a lot about the world.

@hichris123 What are you trying to argue?

You don't get that from code.

11:50 PM
@hichris123 well you have to make a compromise.

@Frank Right, but what I'm getting at is hobbies are just that: hobbies. They're less important than doing something to better yourself or others.

user259867
Got into computers because I enjoyed talking to machines instead of people. Now computers all about talking to people. This is some bullshit

lol

@hichris123 You assume hobbies don't better yourself or others?

Perhaps they do, but (for the most part) programming at a young age & playing games (which is what most kids do on a computer) doesn't really.

11:53 PM
@hichris123 nope. Some hobbies a young person can have (mine was gardening, from since I was around 3) actually get you so much field experience even before you're out of school that you can easily pick up a well paying job without any special training. Which I did.
And I do think I have some people skills, even if not the best.

@Frank Yeah, maybe I shouldn't have used hobbies there. Bad word choice.
How about activities-I-only-do-because-I'm-bored-and-they-aren't-ever-useful? ;P

How do you know they aren't useful?

Now I didn't grow up in the age of tablets and smartphones, and back then computers were large, slow, and boring.
@hichris123 like 'words with freinds'?

Somebody could be playing first person shooters all the time and develop hand-eye-coordination then go on to become a great surgeon.

@bjb568 lol

11:55 PM
@bjb568 I think you're missing my point (but I'm not really doing a good job explaining here, so...)
@Frank Yeah.

that's disturbing @bjb568

… how?

@bjb568 Hand-eye coordination to a TV is different than being a doctor.

^^

11:56 PM
A peer reviewed study showed that FPSs increased hand-eye-coordination and something about telling apart small details in a quick glance looking at a complex image.
It specifically mentioned testing surgeons.
@hichris123 No, it is not.

eh.

I know some veterinary skills, and (for instance) castrating cattle is absolutely nothing like playing video games.

@bjb568 Yes, I think it is. :P First off, it's a lot different to play say Surgeon Simulator vs. actually operating.

Ok, now, does that have anything to do with what I said?

@bjb568 Ooh wut is dat. dat looks kewl.

11:58 PM
it a fun ting dat kewl
