May I have some close votes please? ;)
pokes the @Doorknob

Why is it mathoverflow.net, not .com?

All voted upon

Wow, @Doorknob does wonders. :)

@Frank .com redirects to .net

@Frank Back in 2009, Anton Geraschenko (the admin of original MO) "registered mathoverflow.[net|org|com]." source. He did not explain why they went with .net, but I think the idea was to avoid .com as associated with commerce and .org as associated with formal nonprofit organizations (they had no formal organization at the time).

Yeah. Like how devdoodle.net is a programmers network.

@FamousBlueRaincoat doesn't match most of SE
@Doorknob ik

@Frank mathoverflow is where the really kewl kids roam

user259867
@Frank It was created before there was SE network, in the early days of SE 1.0 model

12:20 AM
@FamousBlueRaincoat they could change it so not to bother our my OCD-ness

user259867
@Frank They prefer to stand apart from SE sites. E.g., there are no Hot Network questions in sidebar on MO. Their contract with SE includes a provision for MO to leave the network, taking the full database (not a public dump) with them. Etc.

Prasoon SauravWhat are the differences between MathOverflow.net and Math.stackexchange.com? Why two communities for Mathematics? Wasn't one enough?

12:26 AM
@Frank Yeah, in principle. In practice this means that "research-level" (whatever that means) goes almost exclusively to MO; math.se gets the rest.

@FamousBlueRaincoat So MO will get only hard ones, and math.se is fine with anything.
They should be merged.
still don't see the point of different sites for different levels of math.
@Fam would this be on-topic at math.se?
so wrong

user259867
@Frank Yes, it would. But the sites are defined by audience, not just by topic.

@FamousBlueRaincoat both audiences together would be able to answer anything

user259867
Also, merge is a non-starter, because MO wants to be MO, and they are a separate organization with its own governing body, etc.

Well I think they should either go away or merge, cause I'm too OCD

user259867
12:31 AM
Okay, here's an analogy: Ask Ubuntu and Unix & Linux. Same topic essentially. But very different communities, and they would not want to merge.

I'm still unclear on why someone's critical blog post means SE folks must be wringing hands, scratching heads, and wondering where our lives went wrong.

user259867
A little more confidence, please.

yeah

@FamousBlueRaincoat Uh... what? I think you misunderstand. No one is wringing their hands... more like an event caused SE to say "Is this really the best way?"
And in all honesty, the close vote/reopen vote system probably can be done a lot better. It's just the how that we need to figure out.

Q: Is targeting "closest" or "last" ever useful?

CuriousWebDeveloperIn Bloons TD5, I often use targeting "first" or "strongest", and I'm wondering if they are and towers/situations where the targeting options "closest" or "last" are ever useful. Are they? Why or why not?

Oh. Eh, don't bother.
It'll go straight to mods, and hopefully the duping will help things.

1:40 AM
Does anyone know if deleted questions will prevent a tag from being removed?

@hichris123 In fact, my school already closed for tomorrow.

@KevinBrown Hmm... I don't know.
@SantaClaus Wow. We don't even have a two-hour delay yet. :)

user259867
@KevinBrown They don't. I remember someone complaining that locked questions (rejected migrations) make zombie tags stay forever. If the thing is unlocked and deleted, the tag can go too.

How should questions be categorized in DevDoodle? I don't like tags. I'm thinking a nested structure thing (from the ask page):

@FamousBlueRaincoat But if a <10k user burninates a tag but wasn't able to clear out the deleted questions (they can't see them), will that hold it back?

1:45 AM
(dependent on language, which is separate)

Whoa, did Vim just exit private beta?

@KevinBrown I don't think so because only mods can see deleted questions from search.

@KevinBrown yes it did!

But again, not sure.

@FamousBlueRaincoat You're right, that is too many; my previous max was 3. I haven't been writing well all week.
Too much CO inhalation over the weekend, I think.

1:58 AM
Do you use y'all a lot when speaking, @Shog9?

No

Do you use y'all when speaking, then?

Folks tend to find it offputting when I write the way I talk. Also when I talk the way I talk, but that's a harder problem to solve with editing.

vi/vim has its own site? I can totally see eclipse & VS wanting to follow it's suit, not to mention notepad & notepad++

Meh. Eclipse and VS questions can go on Stack Overflow.
They're programming-specific tools.
Vim isn't just for programming. (Also, it's much, much more expansive.)

2:22 AM
@FamousBlueRaincoat They're on the ask page – you check them if you're using them. It's to illustrate the tree structure of the "tags".

@bjb568 I don't know. It looks complicated with nested checkboxes. And I don't like being shown an assortment of libraries every time I ask a JS question.

Humph…
Just a tag thing, with the tree part of the system and not show to user?

user259867
2:32 AM
Yes, that would be less load on the user. Tree can be implemented internally by linking tags.

okey
Easier to implement too :P

@bjb568 Perhaps, but besieaning is not a word, so...

@Mysticial write once, read many -- Stack wants to attract the right kind of users. Those who have questions, sure, but mostly the experts who can provide answers. So it is true to say that Stack wants to filter its users a bit. If all you want is a quick answer fix, no need to log in, just read what is already there. If all you want is new users, at any cost, of any quality, it is doubtful any experts would stick around. — Jeff Atwood ♦ 29 mins ago
