I have a strange question about file system in Unix. Why isn't it possible to give the same name to two files under same directory ?
Wouldn't it be possible to use IDs to differentiate between distinct files with a similar name?
@ThiefMaster suppose I have 100 different pictures of flowers I want to use for background. I don't care which will be used exactly. Having to call them "flower1.png", "flower2.png" etc is indeed quite cumbersome, if we could just call them all "flower.png" and let the OS give unique ID behind the scenes it would make some sense.
@ShadowWizard That still sounds as a very specific application for a generic component like a FileSystem... You don't want to be in the MRI-scanner when in the FileSystem decide which configuration file to use...
when I was in SF for WWDC, there was a sign on a big concrete parking structure: "This structure contains chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer." Then a sticker on the sign: "This sign contains materials known to the state of California to cause cancer". It's ridiculous.
@Undo which is likely part of the reason so many people want CA to split up into at least 3 differnet states.. would help companies not have to comply with the craziness since the market share would be less .
