Oh, I see. Well, if I happen to come across anyone that may be your puppet while I'm endlessly scanning, I'll let you know.

A: Create warning in chat when @pinging someone who is not generally active at that time

UndoI'm not sure if we really need a warning, just a way to show that they probably aren't awake (since it'll probably be only power users using this anyway). For users that we have enough information on to make this (insanely creepy) prediction on, how about this? This image has been... slightly ...

I wonder if I could userscript this...

Sam
Well done Pham, you've got some stars.

wonders why I'm talking to myself

@Undo Userscript would be better. I don't like that feature request. It's too nsa'ish and can easily be solved by users understanding that just b.c someone is techinically in the room, doesn't mean they are actually there, or just by remembering to leave the room/log out.

I don't really see a problem in pinging people while they're away...

12:10 AM
@3ventic right. Plus even if they pinged someone that is not really there.. doesn't mean that someone else in the room couldn't answer it for them

$("img.user-gravatar32").filter(function() { return this.title.match( new RegExp("<username>".chunk(1).join('\\s*'))); }).parent().parent().attr("id").replace("present-user-","")
That's just to get a user's chat id from their name :P
oh and you need function:
String.prototype.chunk = function(n) {
    var ret = [];
    for(var i=0, len=this.length; i < len; i += n) {
       ret.push(this.substr(i, n))
    }
    return ret
};
$.get("http://chat.stackexchange.com/users/thumbs/" + $("img.user-gravatar32").filter(function() { return this.title.match( new RegExp($("#tabcomplete li:first-child").html().chunk(1).join('\\s*'))); }).parent().parent().attr("id").replace("present-user-","") + "?showUsage=true", function(data){
  $("#tabcomplete li:first-child").prepend(data.usage)
});
^ Run that in your console with an autocomplete thing to get an (ugly) activity graph above it
... now it won't work.

Sam
12:29 AM
Here's a little something for anyone out there that likes classical (piano) music.

... not perfect, but it does work
String.prototype.chunk = function(n) {
    var ret = [];
    for(var i=0, len=this.length; i < len; i += n) {
       ret.push(this.substr(i, n))
    }
    return ret
};
$.get("/users/thumbs/" + $("img.user-gravatar32").filter(function() { return this.title.match( new RegExp($("#tabcomplete li:first-child").html().chunk(1).join('\\s*'))); }).parent().parent().attr("id").replace("present-user-","") + "?showUsage=true", function(data){
  $("#tabcomplete li:first-child").prepend(data.usage)
});
^ The full thing

Sam
Well, I'm off guys, see you all in a couple of weeks.

12:46 AM
Later @Sam! Have a good time!

@3ventic err... JS?

What is the icon for Stack Snippets on M.SE supposed to be?

seems to be the flat screen like icon

oh, btw, your icon is just wrong....

Ctrl+M also triggers the thingy

1:07 AM
Pff.. keyboard shortcuts are for lazy people.

/me is a lazy one

@3ventic Same, which is odd; that's what's in the code, but I'm getting that weird gradient thing.

1:18 AM
Everyone has a bot now.
I need an editing bot.

I have IRC bots

Something like "CBAstro."
Or "BCortsA."
Hmm...an editing bot would actually work; I could just hand it my editing userscript and let it loose on the realtime page. The only problem is that they'd all be suggested edits (although maybe that's a good thing) and I still haven't figured out how to distinguish between i as an iterator in code and as an English pronoun.
Other Test.

1:37 AM
@AstroCB you'd be suggest-banned soon

@JanDvorak True.
Maybe I can use this feed instead.

And I believe it's a good thing.
@AstroCB are you going to fix broken formatting and crappy grammar? No? Just capitalise I's? GTFO, lazy-ass rep-hunter

@JanDvorak Maybe; there are about 20 rules that it uses to fix posts, so most of the ones from the VLQ should be substantial enough.

dead-link hunter bot might be useful, but there's VLQRQ already

@AndrewT. we've been thinking about a bot like that.
There was supposed to be a dead-link review queue, but that idea died out (this would be in /review)

1:41 AM
@AstroCB does it include a code formatter?

@JanDvorak Unfortunately, no. It just does grammar.

too minor

@JanDvorak Use your own account.

Also some punctuation and usage stuff.
My favorite one replaces mysite.domain with example.domain for old posts because it's not allowed anymore.
Actually, I like auto-removing "Thanks in advance" better.

@AstroCB I would suggest not. Pham hasn't fulled learned anything yet
There are a lot of false positives

1:48 AM
@Andy It's still better than the realtime feed, though.

hopeYou are a huge cucumber. You need to learn when not to be a cucumber. See in this code if (player. is cl) { vexia is here Now, if you don't want the help thats fine

For posterity.

@AstroCB too many false negative

Here's an example of what it does.
^ All I did was indent the code. It even writes the edit summary for me.
I still check it every time because I don't trust it.
If I actually had an edit bot, I would take out ~5 rules that don't always work as expected, but for the most part, it does everything that I would do manually to the post.

fine then

@Frank Would cucumbers be on-topic at G&L?
:P

How can I make that check to make sure that there are not 4+ spaces at the beginning of the line?
It's messy already; I need a RegEx aficionado.

@hichris123 Absolutely. See all the questions tagged cucumbers. (also notice that I answered the 4 most recent ones :)
Why, havin' trouble?

@AstroCB for starters, I'd use character classes here

@JanDvorak When I wrote this, I had never used RegEx before.

time to clean up?

OOps, posted the answer link instead of the question link.

My sleep schedule is so screwed up. Just slept from 15:30 to 21:30...

Morning.
;P

:P

2:18 AM
You're two hours ahead of me.
but
;P

I normally do 8 hours school, 8 hours (school)work, 6 hours (school:P)sleep. Switched the last two today.

@bjb568 Two hours of "personal time" then?

@bjb568 That's a lot of school to the day. When I was in school, I did the minimum, and went home to work in the garden.

@Andy Yes (insert disapproval face now)
@Frank The problem is the minimum is huge here.

@bjb568 So you aren't enjoying it? that would stink.

2:24 AM
@Frank I'm enjoying some of it. Perhaps most. But not the damned impossible essay (x2)!

@bjb568 Oh, essays are the worst.
But if it's challenging, you can make it fun.

… how?

@bjb568 How what? Random how?

@Frank How'o make it fun?
Ugh. There needs to be an english word that means "iwaanabuticantfigureouthowsoimaskingu"
There! A new contraction!

What's the essay about?

2:36 AM
^^

One about an object which is important to me (there really aren't any), one about how Bach helped with the enlightenment (did he really? The require print source doesn't say, internet does).

@bjb568 Well... that's tough.
About the object that is important to you, you could make quite a hilarious story if you wanted.

I could bend the rules and write crap that the teacher wants. But uuuugh.

@Frank Agreed. If you have nothing that is important, select a random object and tell a story.

Another horrible thing is the map quizzes. I'm horrible with geography. I spent 2 hours trying to memorize some physical blob called Europe. Got an F.

2:40 AM
@bjb568 Do your best, and leave it at that. I find it very good for one to occasionally do things one does not want to do. :)
@bjb568 And F stands for...

Agh, fine. At least I don't have to write it on a dead tree.
@Frank Failure.

@Frank Fabulous.

@bjb568 Or something else
Wow! What the failure!

> The other four grades are more or less considered “passing”
Srsly?

Not so fortunate here…
Well, so far: Calculus I have a 95 (A) which is remarkable since I'm a freshman. Bio 93 (A) which is remarkable since I had no idea about any of the things we were doing (before starting, now I do, the teacher is great) and am in the advanced (AA) class. The only other A is choir…

@bjb568 You sing?

2:51 AM
Yeap.

I love biology. There is a biology stack exchange.

Me too. Bio is great!

You'll find me there by sorting rep by month and going to the end of the last page.

In my country we don't like when cats sing... maybe another cultures are different.

@Braiam It's not. I throw things at my cats if they sing.

Look at me here - if you didn't understand, it'd be embarrassing.

Bounties or deleted user upvotes?

It's because of this.

@Andy that 500 bounty left a hole

Well, that's not entirely bad then. Did you get an answer for your bounty?

@bjb568 You don't have an account there.

2:57 AM
@Frank Me too, to "bio is great".
To n00by to use a SE site for it.

@bjb568 Pssh. You can always use it to learn something

@Andy Don't need an account to look at things.

@bjb568 True, but you can favorite interesting questions, post comments and dip your toe in answering something
back in a bit

@bjb568 I use it when I'm curious. Like my question, "How do porcupines keep from pricking each other while mating?"

3:00 AM
That's disgusting.

@bjb568 Cause your a cat. But I wondered how it's possible.
Or, 'Do insects with compound eyes have depth perception?'

I can perceive depth with one eye… Because i haz a bwain! Always thot it strange that some things can't perceive depth.

What's depth?

@bjb568 actually, what you perceive as dept is your brain remembering (guessing) the depth
@Unihedron 3D

@Braiam Yeah. My brain can figure it out. Especially if I'm moving and things appear to move at different speeds because of distance.
Anyway, GTG do HW…

3:07 AM
@bjb568 Then there are questions I've asked that were too hard to answer, about chemicals I use on a regular basis. one, two, three,

@Andy I throw things at cats that aren't even mine. It's only because I'm a dodgeball coach in a cat league, and am always looking for the next rising talent.

How do I add a OR condition in my search

What search? @ita

for example I want all questions that are either tagged with or
adding [javafx][javafx-2] in the search returns me all questions that are tagged with both the tags

[javafx] or [javafx-2]

if you want XOR, use [javafx] -[javafx-2] or [javafx-2] -[javafx]

5:24 AM
@Unihedron @InfiniteRecursion lolz I tried [javafx] | [javafx-2] and also [javafx] || [javafx-2] , but didn't try the most obvious one :P

maybe not the best question for here, but should SE create a CW somewhere with a community-moderated list of software and hardware that's vulnerable to the new Shell Shock bug? or is that not really the SE way?

@NateKerkhofs What's shell shock?

gets shell shocked by @uni's question

It's a new security vulnerability found in Bash @uni

Basically, Shellshock is to Bash what Heartbleed was to OpenSSL, but with bigger consequences

9:03 AM
:O

Luckily I'm on Windows

@JanDvorak do you use msysGit?
or OSGeo4W?
Or even Apache?

Sounds like a good self-answered Q/A pair for Information Security
@NateKerkhofs nope, nope, and nope
also, someone upvoted that

@JanDvorak I still wouldn't count your stars yet. Bash is also used in quite a lot of open source software. If you use system search for bash and find an exe, there's a 99.9% chance that it's a vulnerable version.
Mind if I make that Q/A pair right now? the sooner we get the list, the better

go ahead

9:10 AM
@JanDvorak answered!

@NateKerkhofs First take their tour and check their help section to see what's on topic for their site. Else, your post might end up getting a bad response and you will feel tempted to shellshock @Jan by exploiting his 99.9% vulnerable computer
!!/alive?

@InfiniteRecursion plz send teh coffee

actually, let's not create that list. I asked on their chat, and they said "sounds like a never ending list"
and they are absolutely right in that respect

A: Fluent in Spanish? We're hiring a Community Manager for a Spanish Stack Overflow

TheLostMindFor a moment, let's set aside the language part and concentrate on the actual question. Fluent in Spanish? We're hiring a Community Manager for a Spanish Stack Overflow. This is certainly a question which should be posted on a Job portal (careers 2.0 ?). The question is clearly a job posting. So...

@Unihedron edited the question. Do I need to clean-up the answer? Not sure if it's too radical...

Q: Prevent [featured] questions from being closed

StijnFor the third time now in a short period, there's a close/reopen war on a featured MSO question. When it's closed, it disappears from the sidebar. Seems like a relatively simple check to add so this silliness can be stopped once and for all.
