Here's a nice fairly detailed writeup. Also see the release announcement. Despite the major version number change Ruby 2.0 is a pretty small delta from 1.9.3 (more like a a 1.9.4) and is highly compatible with 1.9.x except for a few fairly obscure areas.

Hah, I wish. I'd go for SVN or Git or whatever, but the end user will be artists and non-technical people. So it has to be "artist-friendly". The asset server gets close to that. And I really don't relish the idea of writing a wrapper around a Git or SVN that is fool proof.
