Q: How to keep Mac secure from viruses, malware and keyloggers?

B SevenHow can I download and install software and make sure that it is not infected with viruses, malware or a keylogger? Also, I heard that Macs "don't get viruses". Is this true? Is it a good practice to run virus software on a Mac?

Q: Is there a viable open source antivirus for OS/X?

instantcoffeeI am interested in finding an antivirus program for the Mac, but not one from Symantec, because I don't trust them. I wonder if perhaps there is an open source solution for antivirus for OS/X? Or how about just an open source program that can monitor the system looking for suspicious behavior,...

Q: Is Anti Virus Software needed for a Mac (OS X); If so free solution?

Frank VI have a MacBook that I use for programming and graduate school work. Since I bought it, I've not given much thought to putting an anti virus on it. Q: Office flatulence is getting out of control

gerdiWe work in a small office with only male developers, so it's not such a major issue if someone lets one rip every now and then. Big deal. However, there is one work colleague who has taken this to a whole new level. Please, I am being serious about this. He can literally fart the whole day and I...

user163250
But OMG, just looking at the title, is freaking hilarious.

I should have someone add that to the Reasons It's Great To Work From Home list we put on the remote job listings.

I'm considering making an Area 51 proposal for a dance exchange.

user163250
But I'm not quite sure under what category to propose it under:

user163250
1. Arts?
2. Culture?
3. Professional?
4. Recreation?

user163250
I was kind of thinking the scope of the site could be for both professional as well as casual dancers.

user163250
But I'm not sure if that's too big.

user163250
I was thinking maybe the scope needs to be large in order to have enough users.

2:01 AM
I'd go with Arts.

user163250
How come?

If you visit each category, there's a brief description of what is meant to fit in that category.
Culture definitely isn't a good fit for that.

user163250
Ah, ok.

user163250
Arts seems so serious though.

user163250
I might have to limit the scope then.

2:04 AM
Don't overthink it.
The A51 categories have nothing to do with the expected expertise level of the site.
There's nothing about "arts" that inherently says "casuals only" or "professionals only", for example.
I'd go with Arts because to me dance is an artistic discipline.

user163250
It definitely is.

user163250
But what if I think questions about dance club etiquette should be on-topic?

Every SE site has to have experts on it in order to thrive. A site that's full of newbies or "just curious" folks doesn't tend to get anywhere because everyone has questions but nobody has answers. You always need a healthy balance of everything.
@Cupcake Ask it as an example question and see if a community rallies around it? The Area 51 category is still rather irrelevant.

user163250
Ah, ok.

This is sort of like picking the perfect name for a coding project before releasing it. Nobody cares and it doesn't matter. (If I were building a startup for ordering food for delivery, I doubt I'd call it "Seamless" and here we are - it's practically a verb here in NYC. As in, "I'm gonna seamless some sushi tonight".) Make a proposal... and if there's need, we can adjust the category, the name, the description, etc. :)

user163250
2:08 AM
OK, COOL! :D

On that note, time to head home. Have a great weekend, y'all.

user163250
Nighty night!

The office isn't your home?

user163250
^

@AnnaLear You're... in NYC... and you're heading home at 10:00?

2:09 AM
@animuson It's close... but home is where my cat is.
@hichris123 That's a perfectly respectable time to head home from the office. ;)

user202362
2:37 AM
@AnnaLear guess you have an indoor cat, otherwise your home is a bit 'mobile' for me ...

2:58 AM
I just reached 1337 edit reviews.

user202362
you are destined to surpass the 1337 amount of reviews ~_~

That didn't one box.

TADA!

@Cupcake lol, no.
Hmm... trying to see if anyone I know does, though...

user163250
@hichris123 remember, I need hardcore dance enthusiasts.

user163250
Not just "I go out to a club once a month" kind of people.

user163250
I'm looking for more along the lines of several times a week.

@Cupcake I'll post it in TL and see if anyone is a hardcore dancer. :)

user163250
3:12 AM
What's TL?

@Cupcake The Teachers' Lounge. aka where all the mods hang out.

incoming LQP spike
;)

You don't dance in the lounge, you step it up in the assembly

oh crap
I mean, yay!

user163250
How do you know spam is incoming?

user163250
Are you psychic?

Heh
Maybe hichris is the spammer

Dun dun dun!

@Undo <conspiracy-theory/>

user163250
Oh.

Ugh, 45 LQP, @Undo?
Really?

user163250
Is the Teacher's Lounge a mod only room?

user163250
I don't see it.

3:15 AM
@Cupcake yes
Very sekrit.
@hichris123 Yeah
I optimized my flag-from-search thing a little bit

@Cupcake if pole dancing is on-topic, are just questions about dancing ok, or is the "how much do I tip her/him" also on-topic? professional etiquette and all.

user163250
...

user163250
You know, I honestly did not think about strippers.

you did put "hardcore" in the description
:)

user163250
Pole-dancing does not necessitate removal of clothing.

3:17 AM
hardcore professional dancing goes beyond pole dancing and straight to lap dancing
so if thats not your intent, it might be worth tightening up that scope :)

user163250
Pole-dancing of the non-clothing removal kind should be on-topic. I'm not sure what to think about lap dancing.

That's some logic leap that only hardcore pro dancers are lap dancers

@random not only but certainly includes them

user163250
Q&A is hard :P

I get the intended meaning of hardcore in this definition (you are really into dancing as a hobby or job, take it very seriously), but remember, this is the internet.

3:19 AM
Asking about tipping dancers is like asking about nutrition on Fitness SE. Related, but not the scope.

Jeff Atwood on November 23, 2010

Over the last 2.5 years, we’ve identified a few problematic classes of questions that tend to get asked on our sites. Many of these are documented in our standard set of close reasons: exact duplicate, off-topic, subjective and argumentative, not a real question, and too localized.

However, as we launched the great Super User experiment, a new, previously unknown class of problematic questions emerged — the shopping recommendation.

That is, on Super User we began encountering questions like: …

Dance

Proposed Q&A site for enthusiast recreational dancers or professional dance performers and instructors across a variety of dance genres, including (but not limited to) ballet, salsa, hip-hop, belly, and pole dancing. If you dance at least once a week, then we want you!

Currently in definition.

user163250
I took out the "hardcore".

user163250
I'm honestly not sure what to do about adult entertainment performers though.

user163250
3:22 AM
That kind of profession is not what I had in mind, but now that you bring it up, I'm not sure whether or not it should be off-topic.

I'd put off addressing it until it comes up in a proposed question or something

What for it to even be a problem

user202362
@AnnaLear someone is keeping a record of when you are leaving the office on a Friday ... said user knows what you look like, where your office is and when you are leaving it ... all sounds incredibly creepy to me ~_~

user163250
Well thanks for the input @casey and @random, time to go recruit some enthusiasts ;)

@Cupcake good luck!
I used to swing dance once a week (wow, 12 years ago, feeling old now) but no longer doing that

3:27 AM
I'm allergic to dancing. Besides, too busy programming.

3:49 AM
@chmod It's cool. I don't have my cat on my shoulders when I'm leaving the office, so nobody will be able to recognize me.

I am feeling sick - the last of my pet roosters is gone, stupid council rules.

Buy 10 new ones and dump them in front of the mayors house?

user202362
Well, none of my neighbours complained about the roosters. But still, local council might intervene if the roosters crowing too much & the last one I had starts crowing around 7 in the morning recently, stressing me out ...

user202362
council usually doesn't intervene unless neighbour complains

Yeah roosters tend to do that...that is their obligation...

user202362

I am non-seriously thinking of starting a pet sharing/renting service petshare.com rent-a-pet.com ... it is for people who don't have the personality to be a good pet owner but still want the benefit of having a pet every now and then ...

user202362
It would be a not for profit organization since all proceed would go to other animal welfare services ...

@chmod711telkitty Do you support international shipping?
I would love to have an elephant pet....

user202362
10:47 AM
have enough room in the backyard for the elephant to sit on? :p

user202362
Personally I would love to rent a puppy 2 kittens & 5 baby chicks to have a party with for a few days. But knowing myself, probably should not own any pet in my life time ... because I am a pretty irresponsible pet owner >_<

user202362
but then again, if you can rent a whore, a hotel room, a car, why can't you rent a pet?

user202362
besides those pets would probably be better taken care of when they are old and sick and you no longer have time for them ...

11:16 AM
@chmod711telkitty I live on the first floor (british convention/2nd floor if you're american) of an 1930-ish house with wooden floors. Would that be a problem? ;)

user202362
Living dangerously, I like that ...

user202362
do you have enemies living downstairs?

Not anymore... :)

user202362
damn, it could be beautiful - elephant's butt on your enemy's face ...

@JanDvorak, being a Saturday night here with that spammer on English.SE I looked up their number from my flag history and decided to spam them back because I had plenty of "free" credit on my cell phone that runs out in a few hours. I was talking total gibberish and ended up being passed around about six people trying to work out what dialect I was speaking until in the end I changed to "Blunt Australian" and they hung up on me lol.

Aren't they also making money from a kick-back-fee?

1:14 PM
@rene, pretty sure those premium services don't apply internationally and they just seem to be standard Indian phone numbers. The money making part would be when thet want your credit card details for their "informative" advice. But interesting now I look further you may have a good point:
Premium-rate telephone numbers are telephone numbers for telephone calls during which certain services are provided, and for which prices higher than normal are charged. Unlike a normal call, part of the call charge is paid to the service provider, thus enabling businesses to be funded via the calls. While the billing is different, calls are usually routed the same way they are for a toll-free telephone number, being anywhere despite the area code used. These telephone numbers are usually allocated from a national telephone numbering plan in such a way that they are easily distinguished...
That ended up linking the whole lot but scroll to the last section.

It is amazing/frightening how those fraudsters manage to get (y)our money...

user202362
1:48 PM
there are illegal fraudsters and legal fraudsters ... the people who manage superannuation in Australia are 'legal fraudsters' because they have government's backing. I am losing 2%-5% of my super every year because super managers charge fees and deduct money in the name of insurances which I never sign up to

user202362
But if you are super rich, which I am not, you can setup your own super and avoid those fees

user202362
which is a shame because I have a postgrad in finance from one of the top universities in the country and make a better return on my money than those super managers do

hehehe

Q: Update prettify highligher for this site

SzabolcsMathematica version 10 has been released, with new functions and operators. The syntax highlighter on this site needs to be updated. The highlighter that is being used is already updated in the GitHub repo. The new version simply needs to be added to this site.

@Pops Cool! That's always fun.

@ɥʇǝS Sigh. I already left, and I don't think it had been touched in months, so meh.

True enough.

Is it even on-topic? I'm not sure as I don't know what the split between SO and WordPress Development is.
Meh. It's PHP, so...

8:17 PM
If you fiddle with php stuff in wordpress it is on topic on SO
If you're only configuring the stuff it goes on wp

Ah, okay.

But there might be a grey-ish area

@Pops Don't you wish you could see deleted posts on all sites? ... oh wait

@hichris123 is a script used to identify library requewst and put them in the CVQ?
@MichaelPetrotta done

@rene Just me searching for crappy answers and seeing if it's a library request. ;) There should be one, though...

did you hit this one ?

You sure you don't want to create static variables named TRUE and FALSE there?
