@FinalContest I just saw that and was about to post the same

It has to be one of the more humorous ones I've seen. The best part is that it looks like the page it points to allows comments without any spam filtering...

@FinalContest gone

No.
I've been getting a bunch of unexplained downvotes lately.

1:32 AM
:/

I emailed the SE, and they said:

I got 4-5 yesterday.

> I spent some time looking into this - it's not one person voting, nor does there appear to be anything untoward (no sockpuppets, etc).

Did you insult a popular sports team or something? ;-)

lol
one reply could be whether the algorithm they use is actually good
because last time they replied something similar to me.
I try to believe that people are not that nonsense at large, only a few of them...
@bjb568: I rectified two unexplained downvotes with one upvote for you.

:D

1:37 AM
is it just me that sometimes irrelevant people close a valid question, and it is close to impossible to get it reopened then?

Impossible to reopen? Meh, reopen queue noobs.
I leave closed most things (because they are truly awful, as awful as the close queue), but if it's good quality I always reopen.

yeah, I sometimes think privileges based on reputation is abused by some people in areas beyond their league.
or they are just simply robo-reviewers.

The more rep you have, the more of a whore you are. Reviewing should be based on how good your reviews are.

what :D
that was a joke answer prolly.

Sure has a lot of upvotes…

1:48 AM
"buy a lock and place a key inside it if it opens it you get your answer"

A: left outer join with sub-query

w2013What a misleading title! I came here for the "left outer join with sub-query". Can somebody please clean that up?

2:03 AM
Good mornternoening.
I've just had a funny experience on Meta.SE. A question of mine from early april was marked as a duplicate of a newer question. I hate how some of the verbiage of the SE system is outdated, and when such outdated system text shows up, in various places, it makes me feel like it's condescending.
"This question has been asked before and already has an answer. If those answers do not fully address your question, please edit this question to explain how it is different or ask a new question." Please forgive me. I am truly, deeply sorry for not time traveling into the future to find a more popular question that answers my question. :)
I will remember to timetravel next time I need to ask a question. :D
In fact, now that I'm on the SE system checking funny Q & A, I had this thought: I'd like to be the first person in SE to have a question marked as a duplicate of itself. YES!! There must be a special gold badge for that.

2:22 AM
@TomPace What were you thinking?! If you keep posting questions without first looking for duplicates in other timelines / alternate realities, you will be automatically banned from asking questions.

I know, I am so ashamed. My reputation should be -10000
Okay, I posted a question that when answered, could be logically marked as a duplicate of itself.

I really think both of those questions (yours, and the newer one yours was closed as a duplicate of) should be closed as duplicates of this: What is a protected question?
But seriously, @TomPace. I'm sure that could be frustrating, hope it didn't put you off too much, having your question closed like that =)

ah, no, not offended much, it's typical of my experience on Meta.SE

My very first MSE question was closed.

For what reason?

2:34 AM
Duplicate!

@jadarnel27 SEARCH HARDER!

Although mine was a more legitimate closure.
@Braiam I totally should have!

hah.
Well, feel free to chime in your thoughtful answers to my duplicate-of-itself candidate: english.stackexchange.com/questions/174897
I just hope it doesn't get closed as "not a real question"

I went to a jukebox musical consisting of only Queen songs the other day. It was...awesome.
I haven't been able to stop listening to Queen since then.

@TomPace there isn't narq close reason anymore

2:44 AM
but... but... what if someone posts to MSE or ... any site, without a question mark at the end??? I guess it makes sense to edit the question to add the question mark. Yep.
I feel like the world of policy-making on the internet is a giant ever-changing topsy-turvy Escher environment.
One can never really know what's "correct", but people try as they may, to hit the moving target.

3:10 AM
@Braiam There's other.

1 hour later…
4:11 AM
2 link-onlys deleted and question gets attention for close.

@bjb568 don't old answers to questions asking for resources get exempt from the no-link-only policy?

…but they are link-only.
Old questions don't get special treatment, why should answers?

That whole thing just looks so pointless. Closing a 3 year old post, deleting 3 year old link-only answers, when there's constant crap flowing in. And some silly person posts a comment in response to a 3 year old comment.

Pointless? If old posts are pointless, why don't we just delete them?

That straw person saying that old posts are pointless would probably be very interested in the answer to that question.
I, however, never said old posts are pointless.

4:19 AM
So we can keep them but we should lock them?

Are you having a conversation with someone else?

No.

Oh.

Reviewing.
Why does the system want people to reopen dup questions when edited? If it's a dup, it's a dup!
(or the rare invalid edit)

Heh the one thing that pops up for me in Reopen Votes is an audit...

4:32 AM
@FinalContest If they continue even after changing name and avatar, then I think they are not intentional or the attacker really know about SO. But in either case, you'll just have to move on.

5:12 AM
@DroidDev: well, daily 4-5 unexplained downvotes are far from normal.
@DroidDev: I wonder if you really moved on, or just quit SO.
it is easy to say move on when you are not in that position. Probably, I would have said the same, if I hear someone repeating the same annoying stuff from others. Anyway, the profile change has not happened due to the downvotes to avoid misunderstanding.

@FinalContest I agree with you saying that it is easy to say move on when you are not in that position. For me, I sometimes get frustrated when I see lot of bad quality question in Android tag. In the starting I try to help those users by teaching them. After some hours of same questions, I turn into sarcastic user, who only downvote or flag bad content.
But mostly at that time, I stop using SO for some recreational activity.
I come to chat room, like here or den. Talk with some friends or start facebook for some time.
Then I again turn back to SO. This is how I keep up with it.

yes, that is also what I usually do.

Doing same thing for all day long, and for multiple days usually change your attitude towards that thing.

I hate facebook or any social stuff for that matter, but yeah, I do off-topic stuff like playing music more. :)

@FinalContest You really hate social stuff!! Try to like some music pages on facebook or follow some music guys on twitter (I am saying that because you play music == you like music). Those might be the guys you'd like to get social with.

5:29 AM
Hey @TimPost, I replied to your email. I wait the response. Thanks!

5:45 AM
@FinalContest Be suspicious when edits are "added 2529 characters in body"

6:06 AM
Isn't this primarily opinion based contestant? Can I flag it for same?

"what is the best" yup.

and then there are crappy answers, one just copying what OP have already told another consisting of links and links.

Yeah. Can't do much about those unless they are bad enough for a VLQ flag.

AND now Jon Skeet started answering questions in , I think I'll have to retire early

Just came out.

6:12 AM
sometimes, it take me while to understand these, but they are best

6:30 AM
can I flag this for something. As the question stands, it is clearly the lack of understanding from OP's side

Can you help? Isn't a real question, so unclear what you're asking.

Ok, I asked here, because I started thinking, may be I am flagging too much, because these kind of questions are making me crazy, but, some of them don't really need flagging.
I was really confused whether that question is flagable or not
Do we have a canonical question like this for Network on Main Thread exception in Android?

@DroidDev "I am flagging too much" BLASPHEMY!
@DroidDev I dunno. Make one!

@bjb568 I am really scared when it comes to asking questions. First I spend at-least sometime on searching if same already exist. Then again, this is a good idea. Let me search for that and then gather some material on it to create one.

Being scared is good, it increases the quality of questions. If you know english, the average score goes up like 2. If you know what a computer is, it goes up like 5. If you even know what "meta" means, it goes up like 10. I'll +1 you if it's good. Self answers generally are.

6:57 AM
@bjb568 I found one very popular question that is on the same issue. I think we can use this as canonical question for Network on Main Thread Exception.
Although, I'd still -1 the question, because it is just How can I fix this issue question.

@DroidDev Looks good.

@bjb568 I had an evil plan of getting lots of upvotes and badges by creating a canonical question like that. Now everything is ruined. :(

:P All questions worth asking have been asked :( mostly.
Except those swift ones.
Which are awful.

I guess I started SO too late for earning lot of rep from single question.

7:14 AM
@DroidDev my two highest scoring answers (+89 and +27) are less than a year old and they're both rather simple answers. Don't give up :)

@DroidDev come join us at Programming Puzzles & Code Golf, then

Same for my questions, top two (+21 and +10) are a year old.

Nobody upvotes my answers… well at least I'm an unsung hero.

@JanDvorak: took about 1-2 hours to reclose it... stackoverflow.com/questions/22294425/…

@Stijn Have you been to android tag. Most of the question that appear are, please tell me how to do this or NPE. I don't wanna code for people, I wanna help them, but it seems people just want code these days.
@JanDvorak I have an account there

7:17 AM
people are crap, period.
it is not SO specific. ;)

But I only know to code in Android. That's the main reason of my less activity there.

yeah, I hear you

But, there's Hinduism coming. It has completed commitment phase and might be starting in private beta in some time. I hope to see a full-fledged site for that and be active on it, as I am here.

Can everybody help me a tutorial ? LOL

7:21 AM
LOL
be careful because the guy is from Vietnam. He may call John Rambo against you.

@FinalContest Have you heard about Rajnikanth I am from India, and I'll call him. :P
Although personally he is a good guy, Lot of charity work is one thing that made him famous.
other then movies

terrible question and all but one terrible answers

It is starred by someone.
wow
How can this get two upvotes when directly asking for solution only. The code posted is already doing one of thing and OP is asking for same in question also.
I also linked it to two answers in my comment, which makes it too-broad, because asking multiple questions in one post.

New user. Question gets into a queue. Upvoting is a valid review action. Question has code. Hence upvote ... possibly.

You know, the more I see of , the more similarities I see with

7:35 AM
@Bart Sometimes I think my flag on these kind of question might also get rejected because of same reason. New User, Question has code.

I don't see it in the queue's history. So there goes that theory :)

what flag suits Which one is better? kind of question?

@DroidDev 'other'

... with what exact message ...

ya, I was thinking same ^^^

7:41 AM
"Cause @TimPost said so" I guess

@Bart sharks vs gorillas or anything to that effect

@TimPost You really want me to write that in other flag?

Jeff Atwood on August 15, 2011

Who would win in a fight between a Gorilla and a Shark?

OK, maybe you’re thinking that’s a ridiculous question. Perhaps it is. But various forms of this question get asked all the time. Consider this now-ancient Stack Overflow question titled Python v. Perl:

Okay, so I’m finally making the jump into scripting languages and I have decided to focus on either Python or Perl. The problem is: I don’t know which to cut my teeth on.

Most of my programming experience is in C, Java, and C++. There’s no specific task I would be learning Python/Perl for, other that possibly applying it to my dev work to make life easier in general. …

@DroidDev ^^

But, first, make sure the question isn't so narrowly scoped that it might be perfectly fine to leave. "What IDE is best?" - way too broad. "I'm working with [framework] within [constraints] on [platform], which of [these three] would be advantageous for [task]" is a whole different story.
@DroidDev You can just say something like "question lacks narrow enough scope to be answered objectively"

@TimPost Ok, let me try something like that.
or it can also be primarily opinion based
finally I see some downvotes on crappy posts. Hope in humanity restored.

7:50 AM
The keyword there being primarily. There is room for questions where someone has done a lot of research and just wants to avoid a really bad move that could mount up to a lot of debt in their project quickly, but they really have to be extraordinarily narrowly-scoped, almost to the point that maybe 12 people in the world would find them useful.

@TimPost but answers to this question will tend to be almost entirely based on opinions, rather than facts, references, or specific expertise. Only this line is what I read for flagging some questions for Opinion based category. However, I don't get the implication of what you have written, from what is written there when I flag something for Opinion based.

@Stijn The IDE looks great

Me and my friends always laugh about how we see everything from programming angle.

Is there a way to find out if I closevote way too much?

7:57 AM
Sure. Check the front page. If there are questions which aren't closed, you're still good.

@DroidDev "I am flagging too much" BLASPHEMY!

Thanks :-D

Profile info now lists "bio", "visits", "stats" and "private", is this new? Or was I blind up till now?

@Stijn: done
@DroidDev: I did not go other, just primarily opinion based

8:12 AM
@FinalContest I did same :)

there is no such a thing in software which is better.

@Stijn I hate CI (Continuous Improvement)

there are always various factors, and that question was not particularly "narrowed".
@rene: why ?

You can never trust it worked like it did yesterday...

Sounds like the software I write @rene. I can never trust that it still works like it did yesterday.

8:22 AM
this is narrowed down, but opinion based

@rene: why?

@FinalContest Why do you keep asking why?

@rene: because I have different experience and I am interested in why...

user image

@FinalContest I see improvements that are only made with as reason because improvement but the real benefit stays unclear and as a consequence it pushes teams/users back because they have to adapt.

8:46 AM
@rene: what CI software do you use ?

Ahh, there we have it. I was not talking about CI software just about CI (without the software).

well, many people have that opinion because of bad software.
or even, bad configuration, etc.

I wonder what that cat really might be doing while someone was clicking photo.

I like CI.

I flag that...

8:50 AM
@DroidDev the cat was informed they were out of catnip.

@Bart Oh!!!

It also has a feature-request tag

gone
Goodnight.

@bjb568 Goodnight

9:43 AM
It took a couple of seconds before I realized it was spam...maybe the fact that I ran out of coffee has something to do with that...

brb ... getting coffee.

really! have people forgotten about google..

@DroidDev too broad, for starters

Flagged already

Some people would benefit a lot from having an in-browser spell checker. Half of my editing work is right clicking on words and choosing the correct spelling.

9:53 AM
LOL! my friend use the exactally code and he can connect but i can't.
Now I have seen everything
when I see whole class posted, alongwith import statements and commented code, not even remotely pointing to error

Every question that has my friend in it can be down voted and closed, If a complaint pops up in meta we might reverse those votes

@rene not until a trivial edit is performed

Sometimes they start with, I am making an app....., then tell about their app, what they want, what they are getting. Then post whole project in code snippets, wait for someone to format for them and then hand over working code out of their snippets or give them new code and tell them where to insert it.
that's how it should be done.

10:13 AM
yep
I was confused by the previous link because you linked the question. As I said earlier, I ran out of coffee....so please tell me EXACTLY what to do otherwise I screw up...

I intended to; sorry

Yay, so many free spam flags.
Man, if this continues I won't need to go for lunch any more. So filling.

Why write an actual question when you can copy paste that email you've just spammed to others.

Ugh.

slow clap

That's precisely what I'm talking about when I rant about people getting into the industry for all of the wrong reasons.
All I have to do is BS my way through this interview and do lots of hand-waving to get hired. I can rely on the Internet to do my job once I have. -- That, frighteningly, is the hymn of an alarming number of 'professionals' in the generation that will replace my own, and that frankly terrifies me.
Q: Daddy, what should I be when I grow up? A: Competent.

@TimPost I've had a Java teacher who managed to bullshit himself into the teacher position, luckily our class managed to convince the school board to fire him.
People who had never programmed before realised he didn't know what he was talking about.

@Stijn Really? I hadn't heard of that happening yet, but I'm not surprised.

11:21 AM
It was adult education, but still

I wonder what people are thinking when they actually try that. I mean okay, let's say I managed to get hired as a doctor, I don't know a damn thing about medicine .. I should just expect nobody would notice and I'd be able to wing it?

@Stijn Heck, I have been training people who were supposed to be teaching classes that same day on a topic they didn't master.

@TimPost In that case, clever and rich people open a hospital or clinic and hire other doctors. ;)

Yay, got my flag in before Tim goes PEW

11:37 AM
pew pew!

That's why I never comment my code. Nobody will read it anyway.

How did this get an upvote? HOW??

@Bart It's an exact copy of this question but v2 -> v1
...And missing the image, heh.

What the frick?
People are weird.
So he asks an exact copy question, gets a comment pointing him to an answer at the copy, and he thanks the user for it? Something smells.

11:46 AM
Mindless upvotes here

@Bart this guy didn't flagged it as duplicate (I think) but gave the link in comment to his answer. Upvotes are only thing people think about.

No problem @Stijn, upvote it I shall.
Don't link me to that profile @DroidDev. Now I've seen the horror that is his title writing ...
... and question content .... sigh
Is really nobody editing any more?

@Bart last week I got Copy Editor :) and still going strong!

Fixed the 3 most recent ones. Let's hope that gets a point across. (Yeah, as if)
Heh
@Bart Can you please stop to edit my question? What's wrong in that? Is that any problem you,if i ask question? — Dhruv Vaishnav 5 mins ago

Could see that one coming :)

Myeah
:)

@Bart wait there's more to come

and just look at the reputation, he has got from those two answers

Martijn PietersI've rolled back that edit, for two reasons: It broke the link section. No actual new link reference had been added, so each link would now load the next URL in the list listed. The blog post linked is a blatant copyright infringing copy (from this tutorial). It is indeed a spam link, aiming to...

Should stackoverflow.com/questions/21324347/… be reopened? I just ran into the issue myself and if I had asked a question, it would also be the only information I'm able to provide.

Is it ok to recommend yahoo answers in a close vote? stackoverflow.com/questions/24040147/want-to-start-freelancing or will I get in trouble for it?

It's a bit "f*ck off"-ish (though admittedly entirely my interpretation)
And based on my opinion of Yahoo Answers

yea, i didn't feel like writing a long off topic reason and yahoo answers was short and sweet, won't do it again though since i guess that could technically be considered a form of spam

Meh, wouldn't worry too much about that. If you have a genuine recommendation for the OP for questions which are explicitly off-topic here, that's not really a problem I'd say. What I hate is users telling others to ask their question somewhere else when it's perfectly on-topic for the site.

2:37 PM
what is this? the question summary appears as this "I have searched and searched and I couldnt find an answer for this, so I decided to ask. Mysql table: table_1 id | value_1 | value_2 | value_3 1 hehe haha stack 2 over flow ... "
but the bolded part isn't in the question stackoverflow.com/questions/24040387/…

Other gangs can be created, but we don't like each other.
