2:00 PM
That's a load of c.... post ... a lot of posts

It's actually a few people from what we can gather. The other crank (Mr. Hitler) is just one guy.

It's not the promised network crippling attack of our dear hackers, is it?

@Bart Yes, they're hitting us with nicotine stained teeth - terrifying actually.

@TimPost can it be hacker group?
Saw some time ago posts claiming it's a group of hackers

Very unlikely, but if by hacker group you mean a bunch of people living in their parent's basements in India, possibly.

2:02 PM
P.s. there is one comment left here: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/219815/…

@TimPost never underestimate your enemy, teenagers can be formiadable hackers

I'm actually quite surprised how clean the network is overall. The whole community seems pretty effective.

Oh I know. But this isn't a cracker group. These are just trolls.
(you'll find that I strongly resist using the word 'hacker' in that sense, as a kernel hacker myself)

Didn't they also try DDOS attack?

I know the Oregon datacenter recently was DDoSed with a NTP response attack, but that was unrelated to Stack Exchange.

2:12 PM
@ShadowWizard The worst I've seen out of them is a bunch of crap posts coming from a bunch of mobile networks. They have the ability to create work for me, that's about it.

Fair enough, @Tim (both of you ;))
Guess they will eventually get bored and crawl back to their lairs.

If everything else fails, we'll call their moms @ShadowWizard

@Bart yup, but that's really extreme weapon what should be handled with extra care! :D

@ShadowWizard We have systems in place that are mitigating most of it, you're not seeing quite a bit of effort on their part. And that's just it - at some point, they'll get tired of it. I get paid to keep improving our resistance to that sort of thing, and mitigating whatever gets through. It's their life they're wasting.
I've actually got a trello checklist full of stuff to send over to Marc to beef up the spam system, I just have to get a few things off my plate this week to make way for that.

2:20 PM
The thing they probably don't realize is that there is an active community here which also gets a kick out of catching them and cleaning stuff up.

@Tim can you reopen this as per @ben's explanation?

cheers

@rene somewhat rude, yes. Dunno if worth flagging though, it's still not blatant offensive.

I wouldn't be offended or shocked by it, but it's a tone that doesn't belong on the site.

2:29 PM
It is the tone indeed...

For the record, the question isn't on topic it's opinion based.

@ShadowWizard nontrivial, though it can detect usernames of new posts I guess.

@Manishearth can't you sample users page of major sites, looking for new names?

How often? All sites is unfeasible

Do you take the body of a post into account as well @Manishearth? Or is it title only?

2:36 PM
@Manishearth well, you can poll the latest users by directly going to their network profile page
e.g. this one is currently the latest
So take http://stackexchange.com/users/[id] and keep increasing the ID
@TimPost more work for you ;)

Bwa?
> Offensive, abusive, or hate speech
Methinks.

You flagged after it was gone @TRiGisTimothyRichardGreen

@Bart Ah. Quick work by someone, so.
Still, a message saying This post has already been deleted might make more sense.

@TRiGisTimothyRichardGreen yeah, that's a weird error message

2:47 PM
@ShadowWizard that's a lot of polling

@rene There was both an answer and a comment there. Both disappeared as I flagged them.
I assume there's a suspension coming up.

@TRiGisTimothyRichardGreen not really, no point in suspension as the troll keeps creating new accounts
The accounts are getting deleted as far as I can tell

I was loking at the askubuntu account

@ShadowWizard And is uploading the same image to each of them. (It's not from Gravatar.) Any point in detecting that image and doing an instaban?

2:50 PM
Seems that that one is still around @rene askubuntu.com/users/245335/…

@TRiGisTimothyRichardGreen most likely the image get new URL every time assuming he's uploading from his computer so it means image detection and won't be simple

Flagged

@Manishearth is this not something you could get usernames out of if you did it once every couple of minutes? askubuntu.com/users?tab=NewUsers&sort=creationdate

Hmm.... think we should stop downvoting his posts, see comments here.
It's just feeding the troll, better just flag as offensive and let the system nuke the posts

2:57 PM
Yeah, I'm nto downvoting anyway. It's pointless

@Bart yep.

@ShadowWizard Let him hear crickets chirping instead of the sound of the missiles headed his way, is the best way.

@Bart As a general rule, downvoting makes this less visible. Making things more visible is good, because then they collect flags quicker.

Why MSO and Ask Ubuntu specifically?

3:01 PM
It is constantly an askubutu account associated as well

At least he's creative, keep changing the contents every time. Interesting reading! :P

@ShadowWizard does he post?

I think it started on AU, and MSO has lower rep requirements @TRiGisTimothyRichardGreen

Because then it's easy, give me a username regex and I'll add it in when I'm not so sleepy

@Bart Ah. That makes some kind of sense.

3:05 PM
Guys, were playing space invaders like a MMORPG. I love my job.
Pew pew!

:D Pew this then @TimPost meta.stackoverflow.com/users/251109/…

A lot of these new profiles are blocked.
(that particular one can't post)

Ah cool

@TimPost Is that an automatic thing?

@TRiGisTimothyRichardGreen Yeah, the system learns from moderator destructions and spam flag deleted posts

3:07 PM
@TimPost Cool.

(and rejected spam edits, and a bunch of other things)
Basically, anywhere a human being that we trust can say "THIS IS ABUSE" the system learns.

So far as I'm aware, it's still running, @jmac - you may have ended up in a different group though. Remember, this is still a test, so it's important that some folks don't see it active some of the time. FWIW, the results have been... Not great so far: a significantly smaller number of people are clicking through to randomly-selected questions than to the top questions, which hints that the algorithm may've been doing a better job of identifying general-interest questions across topics than some expected. — Shog9 6 mins ago
@Shog9, the goal of hot questions is 'general interest'?

@jmac in a somewhat narrow sense, yeah: you're showing a set of questions to everyone on all sites - so you're looking for the questions that are gonna be relevant and useful across a wide range of interests.

My understanding is that they're supposed to be a nice interesting omelette, where most people will like at least one of the ingredients. I wouldn't say general interest in a literal sense.

I'm not sure I like my omelettes interesting
5

3:22 PM
If it doesn't talk back to you, you're really not putting enough effort into it.

@Shog9 I kind of assumed that it was to showcase what type of content is a good fit for that site, and that popularity is secondary to that.
I think that may be where the huge disconnect is.

@jmac You know... That would actually make a reasonable question for meta. I have a sneaking suspicion there are several wildly different views on what that list is for.
@jmac If so, the algorithm used to pick them is complete bullshit.

Whoa, that was neat. My Tavern new-message indicator lit up at the exact same time I got an email. I thought someone had wired my email into the Tavern :P

I've been pondering making one for a few days. My back log of 'stuff I should do' is a bit backed up.
@Shog9 Glad you agree 笑
(that is the Japanese version of 'lol' by the way, just nod and understand the tongue-in-cheekedness)

Let's face it: the "hot" list is designed to surface popular questions. Heck, it literally replaced a list titled "Popular". If there was ever any thought put into making it surface representative questions, I'm pretty sure that never made it into the actual criteria used.

3:25 PM
Okay, now that we've identified the problem, perhaps we can find some sort of magical solution where both Shog and gnat end up happy, and the entire SE network sings kumbayah and brings unicorns back from extinction for a tea party.
So you said that manually tweeting stuff didn't work (people didn't bother), so that's a bad choice, right?
Is there a meta thread/blog post on that somewhere?

I'm pretty sure it was just a meta thread soliciting suggestions, but I don't recall where

Okay, I'll try to dig it up tomorrow. Meta is going to be so unruly in 10 years.
Like the desktop (both physical and digital) of a Japanese salaryman. Covered with stuff that only someone who has used it forever knows how to dig through.

heh

3:40 PM
Is this new, @Manishearth?

@ShadowWizard No, not new.
But it looks like he turned it up a notch.

Also an account on askubuntu: askubuntu.com/users/245358/los-trolleros no questions yet

@rene why always AU?

Poor troll, probably got blocked for the previous key words he was using

heh, los trolleros

3:48 PM
probably spanish...

I know, it's just a amusing name.

@Braiam I don't know...

It's how I speak Spanish

Ubuntu is the preferred operating system of those enduring puberty, obviously.
By the way, I think this troll is the baba
and the Nazi
wonder what he'll become next...

a monkey... wait, we have one of those already

Your mother has a jerk @ShadowWizard? What on earth would she do with that?

I didn't even try to understand that, @Bart :D

:)
Don't feel the troll though @ShadowWizard.

Oh, more comments
I don't feed him, I keep him busy. Hopefully. ;)
Voted to delete BTW

I really got to get some more SO rep so I can do that as well.

3:59 PM
@Bart yep. or become a mod :)
or a dev!

Why can't I vote to delete?

Haha. Out of all of those my plan is still the likeliest. No matter how unlikely.

Any 20K SO user can put the final delete vote here?
@rene you need 20K
10K can delete questions only after three days or so of being closed

Ah, Ok
I see that question in tools

What a surprise, the troll is using Tor
@cookiemonster I'll come back, I've Tor baby. — Los Trolleros 2 mins ago

4:03 PM
All the trolls use Tor, because the ones that don't never make it here :P

So Tor is the magic tool to mask your IP? Never really bothered to learn about it... yet

@cookiemonster I'll downvote your answers and questions with the help of the network and many many accounts. — Los Trolleros 38 secs ago
I'll ping Tim Post and have him roast your account and IP with the heat of a thousand suns.

Oh, I'm offended he did not mention me. :(

"TIM GO PEW"

I was probably too kind

4:05 PM

hahaha

@Braiam That's one of the scariest pictures I've ever seen :P

Someone gets a new avatar

he's an accurate troll sniper

Is this AK-47?

4:07 PM
@ShadowWizard IMO no... AK's are (semi?)automatic, this is a rifle

Oh, still a cool gun

4:30 PM
Amazing these trolls using Tor that have no idea how Tor works, and how limited it really is for such endeavors. We handle Tor just fine, it just takes a tad bit longer is all.

So what would you advice a troll to use @TimPost? grabs pen and paper

An extensive analysis of our logs reveals some interesting things. Most people come from a deterministic set of about 15 exit nodes. You can expand that, and folks do, but the hops make XHR intense sites like ours so difficult to use, that it's often a failed effort.
If I'm here watching and they cycle through nodes, it's over relatively soon. If we're not here watching and they do the same, it's still over in a matter of an hour if not less, depending on how quickly they cycle through them and post.
But yeah, you've got Tor baby. You probably haven't had much experience with facial hair yet, but you've got Tor, baby.

It's like those "hackers" using their pre-written attack scripts they downloaded somewhere. And then they wonder how the authorities showed up so quickly.

5:04 PM
Hey... they paid for that new exit node using good dogecoin.

@Manishearth lol

It shouldn't pick up decimal numbers..

I thought you used to check for a + before @Manishearth?

Someone needs to suspend Manish :P

11 internet points away from 4k

There, you are now 6 little points away from 4k :P

wooo
I'm surprised you hadn't upvoted that already, to be fair

I'm surprised I hadn't seen that already.

I mean, you guys get a shout out in the first line and everything

First line of what?

6:23 PM

@Flyk Oh. I now know why I hadn't seen it. I was sleeping as of 10 hours ago.

you slept for 10 hours?

No, but when I woke up it was buried under other meta questions.

of course you didn't, you slept for less than 10 hours
that means you didn't sleep enough
10 hours is the right amount of sleep
well, during the week
14 hours is the right amount of sleep at the weekend
wooooo
over 4000

I went to sleep at 10:30 PM and woke up at 8:00 AM.
9 hours and 30 minutes. Close enough :P

6:38 PM
you needed to use wolframalpha to work that out? ;p

@Flyk It sounds more official than me saying, "well I thought about it and I think it's about 9 and a half hours."

hmm

[ SmokeDetector ] All-caps title: DISK BOOT FAILURE

I should write a novel...

Start with a title...

Literature Overflow: Tales of a moderator writing an autobiography and getting interrupted by spam flags

I don't think most authors generally start by selecting a title. I think it'd be easier to find a title for a book after you've already written it.

So start writing

Could someone tell me why this question was deleted? Obviously it wasn't a popular opinion but I felt that my answer had value.

Given that Community did the deleting there, I'd assume it went with the now deleted user

I can't see the deleted post so I didn't realize that. Thanks.

No problem.

8:08 PM
not sure if that has any other name than a novel

8:21 PM
@Bart no, but a checkfor a + was part of it

I rolledback an suggested edit (all approved) on answer of me from 2011. It is confusing that uri's are used in namespaces. That doesn't mean that if the project moved to github the namespace automagically changes as well...

@rene I'm getting closer to being a part of your CV band. ;P

By tomorrow? at 21:00 UTC it is party time again!

So is Russia, and Sara Palin could see that from her house!

@rene repcap ;) he'll need at least 24 accepted answers
(assuming 550 rep left)

@rene It feels... dirty. And why 21:00 UTC? (reviewer meetup?)
@DoorknobofSnow 555 to be exact.

yep

9:45 PM
Random upvotes make me suspicious... :P

I'm only closing questions now...
So I'm innocent, as always

I want to order a pizza.

I want you to order me a pizza.

@rene Sure. ;)

sudo order me a pizza

pizza is in the oven

It sucks because they only make gluten-free pizzas in small, and they usually cost more than a regular jumbo pizza.

Ugh, pizza is looking less and less like a word ;(

Oh bother, I've reached semantic satiation too @Undo.
Semantic satiation (also semantic saturation) is a psychological phenomenon in which repetition causes a word or phrase to temporarily lose meaning for the listener, who then processes the speech as repeated meaningless sounds. History and research The phrase "semantic satiation" was coined by Leon Jakobovits James in his doctoral dissertation at McGill University, Montreal, Canada awarded in 1962. Prior to that, the expression "verbal satiation" had been used along with terms that express the idea of mental fatigue. The dissertation listed many of the names others had used for the phenome...

I am currently designing a program that will make pizzas from scratch.

yup, that actually exists

Does it actually taste good though?

10:08 PM
I've done 40 reviews in the cv queue. Pizza is ready

haha, that's great

Where is the upvote button in github?

@rene There's a star button like there is here in chat.

I just clicked it

10:12 PM
Oh, and you can fork it and continue it on.

this is my plan for the backend of my wobsite so far:
what do you think?

@DoorknobofSnow Why not use WordPress?

@Undo Because it's not a blog

Because building things yourself is more fun.

Oh

10:19 PM
^^ also that :D

I noticed a disturbing lack of unicorns in that page...

also I've pretty much never done any server-side stuff so I want to do some

(I think I'll do an internal redirect in .htaccess to make it only have the ID so it looks less messy)
@animuson better? :D (refresh the page)

Much better.
I still never figured out how I wanted to do my tagging system.
Oh, apparently my phone decided to update itself.

Your iPhone is now running Windows8?
