3:00 PM
Two days is a pretty long-running connection

@JanDvorak One of the client machines (that does nothing else but run the client app) has 22 gigabytes received in 12 days of uptime
we restart the client app at least once a day anyway fwiw

so, about 2 GiB until it drops out?

12 days includes 4 days of weekend so really 8 days
so maybe more like 3?

Clearly you're hitting signed int.MaxValue (grin)

fwiw we usually have two client computers running at once for redundancy, and the only time they both drop is when there's some other problem (like during a thunderstorm)

3:03 PM
If the connection regularly drops after exactly 2 GiB of data, it's likely an issue with a TCP implementation, either on the client or on the server.
... or a crappy ISP that resets all your connections when it credits you more data

i don't think so, because we usually start both clients at around the same time and they don't drop around the same time

do they transmit the same amount of data?

for example, we restarted both yesterday at the end of day, and one of them dropped an hour ago but the other did not
yes... but the machine that's been up for 12 days has only transmitted about 1GB
it's RECEIVED 22

ISPs like to cash in for received data...

for what it's worth - i have no idea if this is normal or not
sometimes i ssh into the server machine and then leave it open and forget about it
without fail, if i leave the ssh open for long enough, the tty window freezes

Could be just random drop-outs. 1% packet loss * 3 retries * (1 000 000 packets ~ 1.5 GB) = decent probability of a connection loss.

and if i leave that open even longer, it eventually quits with Connection Reset by Peer
@JanDvorak That's what I think it is. However, my boss doesn't like "I think it's random dropouts"

Are subnet mask calculations ot for SO? Seems like ServerFault material.

he wants "I know it's random dropouts because" or "I fixed it"
@LynnCrumbling Network engineering beta?

3:10 PM
@durron597 record wireshark data for that IP. Several retries just before the drop out = random connectivity dropout

^sounds like the best thing to do

recording the TCP headers is sufficient to verify TCP disconnects.

@JanDvorak Is wireshark free? My coworker mentioned it but then said it wasn't free

it is
Wireshark is a free and open-source packet analyzer. It is used for network troubleshooting, analysis, software and communications protocol development, and education. Originally named Ethereal, in May 2006 the project was renamed Wireshark due to trademark issues. Wireshark is cross-platform, using the GTK+ widget toolkit in current releases, and Qt in the development version, to implement its user interface, and using pcap to capture packets; it runs on GNU/Linux, OS X, BSD, Solaris, some other Unix-like operating systems, and Microsoft Windows. There is also a terminal-based (non-GUI) version...
the only downside is that it produces a ton of data.

Oh maybe he was talking about a riverbed product he has
my development machine has a 3 TB hard drive
Ok, I have enough threads now that I can attempt to untie the knot myself the rest of the way
thanks everyone especially @JanDvorak

3:16 PM
storage isn't much of an issue - you can do a rolling log - but what's your hard drive's bandwidth?
g2g, bye

Bye @Jan!

the 3TB is a 7200 RPM HDD, i also have an SSD but it's only 118 and runs the OS

@LynnCrumbling um... so... what site do you recommend for @durron597, then?

@JanDvorak If it's a networking issue, ServerFault perhaps. It's tough; his question involves an application that he wrote that is actively trying to establish a connection. I might say it's on-topic for SO if's it is framed in the context of code with data. How do go about proving that it is NOT the code? CodeReview?
@JanDvorak That MTU one is definitely ot, but I'm not convinced that @durron597 's is.

@PatrickHofman done.

@LynnCrumbling: I see. Thanks.

@LynnCrumbling codereview requires correctness, it doesn't decide correctness.
2
@LynnCrumbling inclusion of code makes the question OT-MCVE

@PatrickHofman dv-pls naa link

@Unihedron: Done that. Am through my delete votes... ARghhh.

3:25 PM
ok.. not SO. But where, then?

lol aww

@Unihedron: He helped himself :)

@JanDvorak I guess I'd lean towards SO for his issue. If it was my code, I'd probably try to make an app that monitors the connection and prove that it wasn't my code. If you can prove that the issue is network-related, then you can rule out your code. So I've just made a full circle. Where does that leave me? SO? ServerFault?

@LynnCrumbling networking is definitely off-limits to SO..
if you can prove it isn't your code, then it's most probably not suited for SO, if it isn't a compiler bug or similar...

@JanDvorak I guess I'd introduce the question to SO after I've proved that the connection is good.

3:28 PM
Probe the network -> if network works, ask how to debug, if network fails, have your boss ask how network works?

@JanDvorak sounds good.

::poof::

3:52 PM
At this point I'm not going to post it at all, @JanDvorak helped me adequately
If/when I get stuck again, I'll have enough more information that the target site is clear
"My code drops packets. Here's an MCVE." - SO
"My connection drops packets even in a heartbeat connection" - SF or NEb

Haha, "rectool."

also, "less than a minute" is vague. On most supercomputers? On an average corporate desktop as of 2014? On my netbook? On my ancient smartphone? On my experimental "pc" that's essentially a bunch of 74xx's on a breadboard? — Jan Dvorak 15 secs ago

Shog9 on October 07, 2014

We rolled out three new badges last week!

These recognize a pattern that sets Stack Exchange apart from the forums and message boards that came before it: answering and editing questions, the ability to not only write an answer that can be useful beyond the immediate asker but also re-write the question such that it can be found and understood by future readers. Thanks to this capability, brilliant explanations need not languish under titles such as “C++ problem” or “Java doubt” – having written an answer that ably fixed the problems in the asker’s code, it is possible to also fix the problems in his writing! …

A: What should be used in place of "Too Minor?"

Shog9Ok, there's a new reject reason for this specific case: This is not a replacement for "too minor", but it does replace one of the things folks were using it for (even though it wasn't strictly appropriate there either): edits that don't make any positive changes to the post.

Yes!

Sam
10:10 PM
@Frank lol :D

Thanks @Shog9!
Finally, a way to stop the mass-retaggers!

@AstroCB There's a separate, very specific rejection reason for that too...

@Shog9 Which is?

@Shog9 That's new.

10:19 PM
They're all new. Except spam/vandalism

@Shog9 Much better (old rejection reasons + removal of too minor didn't really work).

@AstroCB yeah... I wanted the rejection reason replacements and removal of too minor to happen a bit closer together, but... It kinda took the removal of "too minor" to get folks interested in fixing the rest of the reasons.
Too minor was a serious crutch

Well, I won't get to test them for a while...

@Shog9 Two? That would explain why it's a 7-day ban, but I don't recall the first one.

^ Ooh! Looks insulting…
im lovin it

I thought there was one in the last "review block," but maybe it was the beginning of this one (that one was unjustified as well, but I don't like to complain.

methinks a ban disciplinary action log would be nice

I like the phrasing "causes harm" for the custom edit rejection now.

@SantaClaus Yup. I like the whole thing.

@Shog I only really agree with the second one.
