@PatrickHofman not really...
it's just... RTFM...

It's probably a duplicate.

So...does Smokey's Bayesian stuff work per site? Because if not, that title looks like an awesome way to pollute your training data. Get a few of those on Skeptics or Fitness and you could easily mess up the training

3:09 PM
@Andy No, it's not per-site.

@Andy that 'zak' user should probably be investigated for sock puppetry

@InfiniteRecursion only because I allow it for now.

@Andy true
@Stijn that does look pretty terrible :/

Hehehe
@SmokeDetector false

@Undo Registered as false positive and added title to Bayesian doctype 'good'.

@Andy Lies.

@Unihedron I will smite you with a powerful SciFi weapon.

@Undo especially because that user came up a few times already this afternoon.

@Andy "Powerful" is relative, I probably won't be damaged.

@Undo I'm curious, what kind of stuff do you deal with on SR?

3:25 PM
@Unihedron nothing really exciting, lots of NAAs and comment flags.
Occasional voting fraud, but that's really rare on small sites.
But on SO, I caused this to happen:
That's fun :D

:)
I wonder if I'll actually lead in participation leagues.

@Undo Moderators isn't big enough for that yet.

@Unihedron on mSO?

no, so

Ah :D

Huh, didn't know that existed outside of metas

It does, it just isn't shown in the tabs.

Keep it up and then use it in the next mod election

I don't think I'll run for mod. :P
Thanks @WeaponofChoice

Why not? ;(

I got into the finals with like 5k, no reason you can't do better :D

@Unihedron hichris nominated himself as a 3k user, and he still got many upvotes in Primary.

@Unihedron Just stick to the facts, that's all they want.

Really? :D

You'd be a good mod, but I know some people just don't want to make the commitment to do it. That's fine ;)

Hold on, another inbox notification.

but it's true that it's tough to get elected <10k.

@Undo Anna did it

Eh, no idea. :P

:P

@ShadowWizard no

@Bart but ... why?

@InfiniteRecursion I have my reasons ...

@AnnaLear yesterday I flagged ~50 comments saying "what have you tried", on posts where it was the only comment and where there was an accepted answer. They get auto-nuked by the system when flagged. Will I get in trouble or can I continue doing that?

sounds like good cleanup to me

@Bart I have my doubts ...

@Unihedron not a good idea

@Bart yeah, but Anna also had other things going for her.

Prove: the left limit of a continuous function is equal to its value at that point if both are defined

@AnnaLear OK, thanks.

4:08 PM
@JanDvorak since it's a continuous function, lim u -> x+ is indentical to lim u -> x-, so lim u -> x is?

@Unihedron can you prove that from definition?
Yours sounds like a circular proof

What's the definition? What's a continuous function? Wikipedia is down! Haaalllppp!!!

or rather, it seems like appeal to common sense. That doesn't count.

Hi Community♦

a function f is continuous at x iff for every positive epsilon there exists positive delta such that for each x' such that x-delta < x' < x+delta it is the case that y-epsilon < f(x') < y+epsilon

Well, if you wish to test JavaBot with the same invocation pattern, you can always come to the chat.SE sandbox if you're not allowed to post in the chat.SO one.

I wish to get it to work..

Wait, it doesn't work on another site?

It doesn't work on any site atm.

But you could run it in the Sandbox.

Oh well, it'll work if I refractor it enough.

and a slightly modified version of python, 'cuz it runs on Groovy

user259867
@JanDvorak In order to prove the statement about limit from the left, you must show: for every epsilon>0 there is delta>0 such that if x-delta<x'<x, then |f(x')-f(x)|<epsilon. Since you know f is continuous, the definition of continuity can be used. It gives you delta such that if |x-x'|<delta, then |f(x')-f(x)|<epsilon. So, the definition of the left limit is satisfied.

user259867
Informally: given epsilon in the definition of limit, you stick it into the definition of continuity, and get delta from there. This delta works for you in the definition of limit.

> "If you really need an invocation pattern you can use '$', that's one I used to use"
okay wonderful, we got someone who is giving out allowed invocation patterns!

Right?

4:56 PM
Is your definition of a limit the same one as that of continuity? If so, I've been using the wrong one...

@JanDvorak We had to memorize that definition for our foundations of math class. Bah.

user259867
They are very similar. In the definition of limit we have |f(x')-L|<epsilon. What is yours?

@Vogel612'sShadow IIPA international invocation pattern allocator
@WeaponofChoice A circular one, now that I think of it.

user259867
A definition can't be circular. Or shouldn't be.

Do I read correctly that the definition of continuity is that f is continuous at x iff its limit at that point is defined and equal to its value?

user259867
5:03 PM
Yes, this is how it works for functions defined on the whole real line or on an interval of it. There is a subtle point with functions whose domain of definition contains isolated points, like [0,1] and point 2. Then there is no limit of f(x) as x->2, but f is still considered continuous at 2.

.... and uni rushes in to every chat room

continuity can be weird...

user259867
Much of this is up to the choice of professor / textbook author. Some will adopt the definition of continuity that is in terms of limits: i.e., exactly what you wrote. Others, including me, will follow (epsilon,delta) definition of continuity, which is similar to def. of limit, but does not invoke the concept of limit directly.

@JanDvorak Eh, falls back to what I said yesterday. No attempts shown, but then again, maybe there's simply nothing to show. I'm not going to take any action, but I would easily upvote both the question and the answer if I had the exact same problem and found it here.

@LynnCrumbling I've had the exact same problem and found it here, and upvoted both. Thanks for confirmation.

Oh, can we?
If yes, that's a new feature.

user259867
Actually, the "feature" is just a link to SE team contact form with pre-filled reason.

nice.

user259867
But it wasn't there before. You can even report yourself, e.g., for being Jon Skeet's sockpuppet.

> I'd like to report a problem with the following profile: url
That's... Ok

user259867
5:35 PM
It is correct: since we take inverse image of A', the set A' should be taken from the target, Y.

Thanks :)

user259867
Actually, I'm not sure this "report" thing is a good idea: why go to SE Team over the head of site's moderators? Normally, I would just flag any post by the problematic user (or even my own post) and explain the problem to a moderator.

@WeaponofChoice and if you want to (hypthetically) flag a mod?

@Vogel612'sShadow In the past you would have to mod-flag a post.

user259867
By that point, I'm probably not using flags ... I might be complaining to Shog9 in the Tavern about a certain moderator killing the site. >_>

user259867

(not really)

Good, I frequently report users, useful for me.

I'm trying to execute a simple query on SEDE:

Hmm?

OR Title LIKE 'How do I %'
But it says:
> The query processor ran out of internal resources and could not produce a query plan. This is a rare event and only expected for extremely complex queries or queries that reference a very large number of tables or partitions. Please simplify the query. If you believe you have received this message in error, contact Customer Support Services for more information.
I don't think the query is that complex.
@TimStone ^

The query planner has an issue with making predictions about the cost of operations like LIKE and tries to test them which is prohibitively expensive.

Oh, okay.

Yeah, it makes attempting to do most things with the SO data impossible, and is not ideal. :(

Right, you can do that, but then you won't get all the results. :P

you can keep increasing the TOP until the query planner kicks in

top 40000 won't
