Day!
It's a forum. Saying it's not a forum is just a marketing strategy by SE to make it stand apart from other Internet forums. Which it does because the rules are different. But claiming it's not a forum is just pedantic. — eddie_cat 5 hours ago

Q: How do I determine what vegetables I can grow on a hot arid island in June?

Pekka 웃I will be spending four months on Lanzarote this year, an arid island off the African coast, and want to grow vegetables for home consumption there. The summer is sunny, hot, and dry; local agriculture (mostly potatoes, squash, carrots) is suspended until the winter months. Extreme temperatures...

Old question by Pekka. I wish he would accept the answer.

user259867
He kind of faded out... his last SO answer was in March, and meta activity nearly ceased.

Dumb question
How did I just earn Mortarboard on meta.so ?

He was seen on GL last on Sept. 15, I think.

Joe
(given there's no reputation on per-site meta)

Q: Should I really have been awarded mortarboard on a Per-site meta?

The Unhandled ExceptionThe Ask Ubuntu Town hall digest caused me to win the Mortarboard badge, yey! But wait. [Mortarboard] Hit the daily reputation cap for the first time Per-site metas don't have any reputation... I am confused :-) I know why I got the badge. Should I have? Let me rephrase. Is this behavior ...

thanks!

@Joe Yup!

@CareBear "weird"… like X - X = 0?

user259867
@bjb568 If we accept ∞+1=∞ and ∞-∞=0, then 0=∞-∞=(∞+1)-∞=(∞-∞)+1=1.

user259867
In most cases (when integrating), the way out is to accept ∞+1=∞ but reject ∞-∞=0. That is, give no meaning to ∞-∞.

NOOOOO. You can't subtract infinity. You can subtract x from x in a limit where x goes toward infinity.

user259867
7:35 PM
Yes. But the situation with integrating 1/x^3 over [-1,2] is more like there are two limits happening: the singularity at 0 being approached from the left and from the right. Unless one insists on both approaches being perfectly synchronized, there's no definite value to this difference of limits.

Q: HTML5 video will not loop

Ethan TurkeltaubI have a video as a background to a web page, and I am trying to get it to loop. @PatrickHofman that shop used frontpage... or maybe Visual InterDev for the very old people... close voted btw...

@Andy right
@ShadowWizard I know... it's weird how it does that. I guess crap attracts crap.

@hichris123 but why the high score? title only?

8:35 PM
@ShadowWizard high... eh, not really. 99 is the highest, has to be above 50 to post. So it's not confident in the spam classification. But yes, title only.

@rene: are you that old too? Worked with both, but not professionally though. I am not that old :)

Someone call Jeff he is going to lose his record having the most downvoted answer!

Ah, that feeling when you throw a flag out there and someone gets their reputation knocked down to 1 as a result. Productivity!

... why are we being invaded by employees? Have they discovered our stalking of #SEMeetup2014?!

SHIELDS DOWN
Battle stations!
Hey @hichris123 any chance you can participate in developers.google.com/open-source/gci ?

@Undo ... down? Why not up?
@Undo I probably will.

@hichris123 Because they're obviously down, either that or the employees figured out how to climb over them
@hichris123 fun. Ever been to Mountain View?

@Undo Ah.
@Undo Nope. I wish.

It's insane, Google logos everywhere.

9:02 PM
Who's idea was it to make mSE chat look so much like TL chat?

@Undo Remember, there's a red box.
@Undo I totally want to go to I/O... if only they would make a student program like WWDC.

right, but who cares about the red box? I just look at the general distribution of colors.

@hichris123 If that hits -202, it beats the network-wide record.

@AstroCB yup

@hichris123 -200 now.

Jeff Atwooddeclining -- you can always cast a reopen vote if the post gets closed. Also note that all close votes automatically expire after two days. Gah.
"The answers are deleted because the site administration wants us to place paid advertisement instead of useful and clear answers." - No. Realize that many of your answers have probably been deleted by the community, which is very good at identifying spam and self-promotional content. The Stack Exchange model is naturally resistant to this kind of stuff and you'd know that if you actually cared about the audience you're trying (not-so-subtly) to advertise to. — AstroCB 2 mins ago

There we go.

9:15 PM
^ That's all I have to say on this matter, though.

status-just-no
You realize the run a Windows stack, right? :P

Right, but they write code with OS X.

9:23 PM
Eh.
It's built/compiled via TeamCity, so I'm assuming that's running on a Windows machine. :P

now you're word-lawyering :P

@Undo ... eh, I'm right and you know it. :P

Nah

@Undo Write code for what? SE? The Stock Exchanges? FOSS projects? ;)

You're both wrong; Ubuntu > Windows > OS X. :P

Ubuntu ~= OS X > Windows

@Doorknob Well, Sublime runs on all three.
And sublime > vim > emacs.

9:27 PM
Who cares about Sublime when you have Vim?

You all think code is still written? Youngsters...

@hichris123 No! I would (ab)use ♦-powers to edit that if we weren't on chat.meta.SE :P

∴ Ubuntu = Windows = OS X

@Doorknob whispers the emacs people got a whole site, and they're secretly filling it with artillery. keep your head down

@Doorknob Exactly why we're discussing it here.

9:28 PM

nah, I decided a while back that the CMs are getting enough flack over that :P

@Undo Nope. Never. Not until we get the Vim site we deserve. :P

@Doorknob Personally, I think both should be shut down, but...

Okay, have fun with that :P

@ShadowWizard thanks, I'll look into that.

@hichris123 There's a unicode symbol for that?

Is the SE meetup thing like a physical grouping of animate blobs that's going on now or something? Is there a wabsite for it or something? …

Q: "Use of property 'nibName' in base object before super.init initializes it" after updating to Xcode 6.1

UndoI have this code in my iOS app, written in Swift: class AddHomeViewController: UITableViewController, UITextFieldDelegate { ... required override init(nibName nibNameOrNil: String?, bundle nibBundleOrNil: NSBundle?) { super.init(nibName: nibName, bundle: nibBundle) } ...

@Undo Ah. Why the cv?

It's a minor typo cv
And I bet it's from someone who doesn't work with Swift.
