@TimStone You 'round?

AROOOOOOOOOO

@GraceNote Was off making soup, 'ello

@TimStone Soup to stay awake for the Town Hall?

That's what the soda is for

Is there one of those tonight?

1:59 AM
@mootinator Two. We have Programmers happening in a minute, and SciFan right after it.
@TimStone Goody, goody, glad I didn't blindside you this time.

Ooo

@GraceNote Admittedly I had forgotten to check if they'd been scheduled, but I joined the rooms now ;)

That was sort of funny how "Jimmy Hoffa" floated in the room right after me.

@TimStone Ah, haha.

@PopularDemand Consider me told. I will sternly reprimand now-fake-Josh the next time he's here.

2:12 AM
There's been a coup?

Yes. Josh's computer actually determined that he was the fake one.

su: who are you?
kyle:~ dfjosh$ whoami

kyle:~ dfjosh$ ssh localhost
You don't exist, go away!

Well, one Josh has 'Git' in his name, and the other one has 'Darn'. I assumed the darn was for 'Darn, I'm not the real Josh.'
Then there's that other Josh who we don't acknowledge is a Josh at all.
But that's an entirely different problem.

@mootinator That was a pretty long wind-up for a joke about my user name. Well done.

It wasn't a joke about your user name.
I'm going to have to be pedantic there.
The hell is wrong with me. I'm not even good at being pedantic today.

Somethin'
Whatever is wrong with you is probably similar to the thing that's wrong with my brain.

2:17 AM
Not enough...something.

Sure. Now you tell me.

The letter S and the number 11!

Things that Sesame Street was sponsored by today!

Sort of!
Next question: ...something.

That didn't end with a question mark.

@GraceNote I've put some thought into this. It's a tricky thing to avoid a swarm on a question. The main thing to look for, in my view, are controversial but not immediately off topic questions that are likely to get a spike in views from people unfamiliar with site scope or just "me to!" answers. It's a tricky problem and one that may not be solved without some machine learning or other technical tweaks.
Having trouble not asking "How do you feel about people making minor edits to bad posts (such as correcting 'me to' to 'me too!')

Nothing's happening...nothing's happening...something about a map...

I'm a map I'm a map I'm a map.

@SE Devs - FYI, the formatting for code blocks in IE8 is all jacked up. This should be rectified immediately. Note that I am too lazy to take the time to tell the right people about this serious problem.

But IE8

Sigh. Spend 30 minutes trying to make an ideal "is this appropriate" question on meta. Instantly downvoted to -6. I remember why I've stopped coming here now heh

4:06 AM
@Earlz just remember that downvotes on meta are not a sign of your worth, but just a signal that the community doesn't think your question has appropriate merit. Don't take the downvotes personally. I realize how tricky that is vs how easy it sounds.

4:36 AM
@jcolebrand I know that. I just don't see a point in even trying to contribute to meta at all because upvotes won't mean you have a good question. it means you have a popular question. and downvotes doesn't mean it's a bad question, just means it's an unpopular one
The big problem is that this isn't feature requests or bug reports or anything, but questions like "should this behavior be allowed". Depending on how you word your question, you'll either get downvoted into oblivion, or you'll hit the popular side and get a lot of upvotes
It's basically impossible though to ask "is behavior X covered by the stance indicated by this meta post on Y" without getting downvotes

4:54 AM
meh. Thinking I'll just not contribute to meta anymore unless I have a true problem. Seems like every time I ask a question here it literally ruins my day

5:26 AM
I get really tired of the "Votes are different on Meta" rhetoric.
Now, the reasons that a post could be considered "not useful" are possibly different on Meta.
In the sense that a well-written discussion question could be "not useful" because it's a terrible stance on an idea.
But we're not just going to upvote the bejesus out of a bad post just because someone put a lot of time into it.

Q: Update the meta FAQ to clarify when meta voting should be different from regular voting?

RachelI recently saw a comment by Shog9 saying that he disagrees that downvotes are different on meta This surprised me, as I find almost everything Shog writes to be well thought out and correct, however this statement goes against what I thought was true about meta voting. The meta FAQ says: ...

4:18 PM
How can I contact a moderator? The specific-user tag says I should better use the report feature, but I have a question regarding how the report has been handled.

@phant0m what works best is if you just ask this room.
We generally have ways of drawing the moderators in when there's a very specific question
(funny how this network requires the use of specific and not "just, ya know, whatever")
What are you trying to report on?
abusive users, merging, etc

@jcolebrand I downvoted a post and explained what I didn't like, and soon after, I got two downvotes on some random posts of mine. I wasn't too sure what to do so I reported the user and asked in the report message whether it was an "act of retaliation". I got a "helpful" on the report, but I have no idea what to do next time and whether or not it was in fact the result of my downvote.
@jcolebrand It's just that I hardly ever get downvotes, and thus statistically unlikely that the two events are not connected :)

Ahhhh
So, here's the thing:
Some people in life are assholes (just ask @jadarnel27 about me sometime ;-) )
You just have to shrug those guys off and go on about your business.
Let's pretend it's the real world, and you choose not to work on a project with somebody because you point out that javascript is a terrible language to write SQL in.
Now, in his world, that's a perfectly cromulent thing to do, but not in yours.
So he goes around and says "that guy knows nothing about writing SQL, don't work with him. And he doesn't know javascript either!"
So you keep your nose down, you continue writing good code, and others see that you know what you're doing.
Eventually those remarks from him "go away" and nobody but you and he remembers them anymore.
Rep is a lot like that. He's gotten upset, and he's said something mean. It'll "clear itself out" as you continue to "do the right thing".

@jcolebrand I see what you mean. But I just thought if there was no action to be taken from the moderator's side, I'd expect the ticked to be marked as "not helpful", because I reported something that doesn't need moderating. So if it was indeed helpful, what changed? I'm not annoyed by the other guy, don't worry ;)

@phant0m make sense?
Nahh. Nothing like that.
If someone downvotes you like 15 times, the system will revert that.
(there's a threshold under 15, but never you mind what it is)
As for "helpful" vs "not helpful" it goes like this
I'm a moderator on Database Administrators. I want to know when people are being abusive. So when you flag and tell me he's being downvote abusive, that's helpful, even tho I can't do anything about those downvotes.
Now I go to his profile and make the tiniest mark for other moderators to see, when they take out their inspection loupes. Nobody else even knows it's there.

4:32 PM
Ah no, just two times ;) I'm only slightly annoyed because one's on a post that was pretty late to the party and was sitting there with a score of 0, and I put in quite some time writing it

But in the future when he goes on a micro-downvote-rampage again, and it gets reported, we have a record of his history.

I see

With three or four of those, we send him a message and say "look, we get it, but stop with the "revenge downvoting" because you're making the site worse, not better"

A: Safest way to convert float to integer in python?

phant0m That this works is not trivial at all! This post explains why it works in t...

this one?

Heh, exactly :)
Thanks, that's too kind of you. You sure are a fast reader and even faster at comprehension

I've seen well written posts before. And I read faster than most people can type, but not all people.
got a coworker who can type over 140

4:37 PM
wow... 10fastfingers says I can do 100wpm, but English isn't my first language so this is bound to be slower.

depending on how "on" my brain is I can follow folks typing about 200wpm. But only in bursts.
even if that's a recording sped up

I don't even know people that can type that fast...

Lix
5:02 PM
I'm averaging at ~58wpm...
I thought I would be much faster than that :/

@Lix yeah, I'm down some since HS.

Lix
Guess my estimation was thrown off by my constant use of autocomplete in my IDE :P

about 60 for me too, bursts of 70.

HS?
ahh... highschool...

that was fun though :P
coding speed would be a different metric though...

This is pretty darn cool :P
@pha - not sure... you can ask some of the moderator nominees ;)

> Judge Lambert said: "We see no way, on the evidence in front of us, that the hard drives could be returned to the appellant with the images deleted so that they cannot be recovered." Read more

@Lix Sorry, I don't follow, how's that connected to being a moderator? Are you implying they're all in highschool?

I'm so very sad that there's no way to overwrite files.

Lix
5:13 PM
@pha - not at all connected... There are a few nominees that are quite young
says nothing about their capabilities - just an observation and a feeble attempt at making a joke...
I'm gonna go suck on an onion in the corner now :/

@jcolebrand Well, don't they have the Gutmann method for that? ^_^

@phant0m you have successfully earned one femtointernet for today.

Is that some new form of currency?

@phant0m you've not heard of "you won the internet"?

No, I thought it always said "You win" on the internet
But maybe I misread...

5:19 PM
Welcome to Meta. We get a lot stranger. It's too late for the blue pill.

I see that now...

> you win one internets

I won three internets before breakfast already. TAKE THAT

But a femto is a bit cheap.. isn't it?

@phant0m recognizing Gutmann's applies to "shame we can't delete the files" doesn't earn much in these parts.
Ever seen an Escher drawing?

5:22 PM
That's the water falling down the thing-thing?
I didn't get the first part btw

Yeah, we're like that. We don't really reward merit here consistently but we devour and eschew moronic thoughts.

So anyways, welcome to the red-pill club.

@phant0m lol, yeah too late.

Well, I wouldn't mind having a physical diamond myself. And by physical I don't mean some bits and bytes on a server :P

pffft, they only cost like $99 at a store
They're not very large

5:29 PM
I'd much prefer selling one compared to buying one... but that's just me :)

@phant0m Hrrmmm I've never actually tested my typing speed before. It says I have 93 WPM with 90 correct and 2 wrong. I bet I could get it better now that I know what I'm doing :)

I'm off for dinner, bye and thanks @jcolebrand

indeed

@phant0m Thank you for introducing me to another way to waste my day :)

@Rachel what, the tavern isn't sufficient for that?

@jcolebrand Yep :)

@YiJiang are you here?

That's certainly not from this morning... Wow.

Heh, I'd look up if there's special HTML like Facebook's image_src meta definition to make that work, but I can't seem to find any help links anywhere on that site. So I'm just gonna mark it a fail and move on. — animuson Sep 19 '12 at 17:06

@animuson It says it was last active Today, so it probably got bumped to the front page and that's where the user noticed it

Ah, I see.

Such a viscous comment. Ooey gooey

The part he extracted also means nothing out of content. -.- That sentence is definitely referring to Reddit's lack of a help link on their website.

out of context

Shhhh :P
At least "content" makes some sort of sense. rolls eyes

5:55 PM
@animuson His comments on your election post make me think of the saying "Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience."
Not trying to say he's an idiot, but you can't make everyone happy and attempting to often ends up negatively for yourself :)

@Rachel better you than ani

@Rachel You're most welcome, I'm sure I could think of an other link or even two...

I may have maintained that there are never occasions where I'm not an asshole.

did the spam trigger thingy get tweaked again ?
why am I getting 'you must wait 4 seconds' when trying to edit a message for a typo
seems much more finicky today than it has been in the past.
