Q: Please, set some unrestrictive Access-Control-Allow-Origin headers

Undo the SnowmanI was working on a userscript today, which had a goal of displaying chat pings immediately at the main site. This would allow me to respond more quicker-like to chat pings. However, I was met by this fearsome warrior: Can we please set some decent header things? I want to be able to do this ...

@Undo What's a good name for my post about Spam Review?
It needs to be good, creative, and catchy.

@hichris123 A title? Hmm...
> We want our spam reviewed!
Umm...
> A51 proposal with a huge audience closed!

Hmm...

> Spam needs reviewed too, not just code!
> Spam is like code: It still needs reviewed.

Which do you think?

2:05 AM
I dunno.

How about this:
Our spam needs reviewed too, not just code!

> Undo has disclaimed himself from this post
@hichris123 That sounds great

Let's do it.

hehehe
We're not doing anything. You're provoking the gods.

> This question wasn't my idea

2:07 AM
Ready?

@UndotheSnowman, if it can help us be more quicker-like I'm all for it

that's a good title

// presses the button that ends hichris123's user profile

@hichris123 Ready.

Q: Our spam needs reviewed too, not just code!

hichris123It has come to my attention that Spam Review, a site that has serious potential to help Stack Exchange people and spammers worldwide improve their spam, has been closed. This seems like a serious bug to me. First, example one: I think it's best to hear it from a spammer who is deeply affected b...

Hehehe
Nice knowing you

Someone's quick on the upvote.
@RyanCarlson Posted it.
56 seconds, 4 upvotes.
Hmm...

I upvoted it immediately. I was happy to see my question in the screenshot

Do I just hope he who must not be named doesn't burn it with fire?

@hichris123 If he does, I will flag it for undeletion.
If He Who Shall Not Be Named burninates it, then I will take a screenshot of it and host it on the Interwebs.

2:10 AM
Flag this as spam you guys.. its been up for 22 minutes

@JoshC more offensive than spam... :P

Why isn't it gone yet?

and while you're at it, flag it as NAN for a free flag.
I found it in the Late Answer queue.

Wow, posting something in The Tavern sure gets it some attention.

Yep.
-9 vs -4

2:12 AM
-10 downvotes and it is still up..? I thought it only took 6 spam flags to delete..

I thought so too...

I guess people aren't flagging

I'd like to see him beat me with a baseball bat, let alone God.

Maybe since it's a mix of spam and offensive, it doesn't work?

@hichris123 They both have the same effect; they're counts are merged.
...And it's gone.

2:13 AM
They migrated my post.

I don't know.. it sounds like it needs to be migrated to Spam Review @hichris123

It's gone
from my laggy flag

@hichris123 Grrr.
;(

Shog did it.

That sucks..

2:14 AM
Shog is taking it too seriously.

meh

Whatever, let's give Chris some a51 rep.

I did tag it and .
Wow, you're double voting on it.
Exploiting the system.

It's not your fault it was migrated ;)

@UndotheSnowman You don't get reputation on Area 51 Discuss. It's treated as a child meta.

2:16 AM
@animuson Huh ;(

I thought you do get rep..

Post off-topic question > get your friends to upvote it > flag it for migration > get your friends to vote again > profit
I still don't understand how you get rep on a51

Meh.. 2 people just downvoted my sample questions on the spam review proposal.

I got two downvotes, but tons of upvotes.
@JoshC I just upvoted them.
So...does anyone read the Area51 Discuss/Meta?

Why is it always Friday in Iceland?

2:22 AM
Don't question Iceland.
They know best.

Too late

I have no clue.

It's always friday in Iceland because they can't tell time.

@hichris123 I have to say, I'm really tired of this Spam Review proposal. It sounded like it was meant in earnest at the beginning which is why I left it open, but then there was so much near-trolling happening around it here in chat, on A51, and on meta, and I'm just tired. It's not particularly funny. It's creating work for us for what seems like a dubious purpose. Can y'all not? Or at least if you mean it seriously, then treat it that way. (cc @ColeJohnson)

2:33 AM
@UndotheSnowman I hate all joke proposals that don't promise to save me from tainted chickens and rice.

@AnnaLear I'm curious what private beta would look like.
Anyway, it's kind of joking, but kind of serious. It's joking in the sense that it's probably not going to get reopened. But it's serious in the way that it's worth a try.

here's the thing. if you want it reopened, take it seriously. I didn't reopen it because by the time it got closed, it seems pretty clear that nobody was actually trying to make a go of it. "Haha Jon Spam facts!!111eleven". Meh. Whatever.

@hichris123 Much like dev.SO probably

thinks up a proposal about food safety or something for @Shog9
@hichris123 Yeah, it would look like dev.so

I'm not without a sense of humour, but there's a lot of peoples' time that comes into play here. So pick one - joke or serious. If it's a joke, great. We had a good laugh. Time to let it go. If it's serious, also great. But then let's actually build a good site.

2:37 AM
Hmm... so what can I do to make that happen? I can close and reopen posts, sure, but what could I do to moderate it or help it along?

Yes - suppose we were to actually really want to make it happen. What would need to happen?
I... am having a hard time picturing a constructive spam.se site.
@hichris123 But yeah, we can probably let it go now.

I'd be interested in making it work. I think it would be successful.

@Undo You never know...
Stranger things have happened.

Convince me. I'll reopen the proposal. Then it goes through the normal stages - gather a community, define scope, etc. It might not get launched (that depends on the scope, if nothing else), but it would have a shot.

I cast my vote (which I don't have at the moment) for not reopening it.
I mean... imagine the questions.

2:40 AM
I think the scope should be changed. Rather than Spam Review, just Spam in general

@Undo Maybe we could come up with a reasonable scope for it.

This isn't doing it for me. ;) But tell me what you'd discuss there. Put up a post that seriously explains how the site could benefit the Internet at large.

I think that this is all a joke that's gotten out of hand.

@AnnaLear You're like the teacher who's given the impossible assignment.

If you end up with something that's drastically different from what's currently up, start a new proposal.
@hichris123 I'm okay with that. Not every topic would actually make a good site. :)

2:42 AM
@AnnaLear That's why you're a CM, and I'm... well I'm here.

4:46, I'm going to bed. Good night (morning?)

@3ventic Night.

Would it be effective to make a list of bad reviewer(s). The list would be backed up with actual review URLs.. it would be an effective way to remove bad reviewers when audits aren't doing the job.
I encounter so many when I look back at the history.
Example: 2 people approved this: stackoverflow.com/review/suggested-edits/3625728

2:57 AM
@JoshC wait, aside from the weird insertion of "Fixed", why is that bad?
well, also some ambiguity about "style tag" (they mean class?).

I mean.. if someone thought the code was wrong, shouldn't they have posted it as an answer? Or at least a comment? I consider it a radical change.. no?

Not necessarily.
It's not a radical change at all - the answer is the same. The only thing fixed is the symbol used in the selector. The spirit of the answer is maintained.

I was under the impression that we can't edit other peoples coding.

You can, people just have hugely varying opinions on what is acceptable.

I think absolute rules like that don't make much sense.
Especially when it comes to something that looks like a typo or, at worst, a minor mistake.

3:04 AM
So would it have been appropriate to edit it and just change # to . ? The <strike> and stuff was unnecessary.

Woah.
166 First Posts.
@AnnaLear What script just ran?

@JoshC I think so.

"asked 20 days ago"

@hichris123 Erm. It's 3am UTC, so probably whatever script powers the review queue? I'm not sure.

@AnnaLear Alright - I'll do that then.

3:05 AM
@JoshC Yeah, that last bit is odd. Otherwise it seems like it was an innocent enough of a mistake that correcting it makes a lot more sense than posting an answer with the correction.

I kinda like the more specific example ($('.parent')...), too.

The goal is always of course to have the question effectively answered and to a lesser extent also support people who are effectively answering questions (even if they sometimes make mistakes).

@hichris123 Over 500 now

3:34 AM
Wow. @JoshC

(Not to jump right in or anything...) One risk in allowing edits to the code is when people actually introduce a bug by doing so -- and when going through the review queue, I'm not often able to recreate each repro myself to be sure. Posting a code edit as a separate answer allows both to be compared, and a wider audience can review the substance of the code difference -- whereas making the edit directly means that only a very few reviewers will see and confirm the code change.

@DreadPirateShawn That's definitely a concern. However (and this is true for any kind of review), if you aren't sure, you should skip.
When code changes are major and change the actual core of the answer, it certainly makes more sense to post a competing answer. For a typo, though, that's just silly.

Agreed, and I do that too -- although regarding the substance of the code itself, I'm more inclined to trust (a) the user who researched the answer and (b) those who have (often) confirmed the answer as successful, rather than a 3rd party who (sometimes quite) later decided that it needed to be tweaked.

Detailed edit summaries also help.

Fair enough -- some typos are admittedly quite obvious. Typos I'm more inclined to see as valid.

3:44 AM
Ideally, we'd have everyone be very conscientious about reviewing edits. In practice, human nature intervenes. But I have a lot of issues with the lesson coming out of that being "never edit people's code".

It's when newer APIs are used to replace older ones (perhaps it's less backwards compatible? comment don't edit) or less verbose syntax is used to replace longer answers (perhaps introducing a bug? either comment or new answer) -- etc.
Point being -- a comment allows future users to see the original vs the new. Edits are invisible to posterity.
(Technically not invisible, sure, but functionally so.)

Eh. On a post with a lot of comments, a comment is terrible. And even when it's the only comment, at least an edit bumps the post.

And fair enough with issues re: "never" -- Fievel taught me long ago to avoid hard lines on such things. :-P

There's no ideal solution. This is one of those situations where it's great that we have a lot of community moderation features, but they sure aren't without drawbacks. :)

True true.

Q: How Do I Get the Winterbash 2013 Secret Hats?

jmac My intention is not to spoil any of the secret hats. These are ones that anyone who looks at the leaderboard can see, and I have no intention of telling you exactly how to get any of them. However, giving people a nudge in the right direction seems to be fair game. List of Known Secret Hats:...

@elfslice, please remove oneboxing?

Huh?
Oh.
Crap, I can't now.

The video above.

Sorry. I didn't think it was offensive.
Too late.
Sorry...

4:48 AM
Lame. I thought that worked last time.

"Offensive" is relative, but generally speaking...

What was wrong with it, for future reference?

Women in swimsuits are generally not something I want on my screen

Women in swimsuits are generally the only thing I want on my screen
but I see your point I guess
Sorry, I'll try to keep that in mind

But generally speaking, when you onebox things, they are generally not for any purpose other than a quick announcement of, "This is what I am occupying myself with at the moment", which doesn't have much added value, and makes me a bit less tolerant of them.

4:53 AM
Yeah, that's fair.
I'm used to sharing whatever I happen to be listening to
I'll stop doing that.

It isn't about "This is always bad" or "this is okay", it is about understanding the audience, thinking about the impact of your action on the environment you're in, and making a decision based on your common sense and feel of the atmosphere

I don't understand how one can earn "Winter Is Coming" hat... o.O

I want crazy Jeff hair!

@animuson So do I. So I suggest you change the "How to Edit Code" post to have you as the author, and re-accept my answer giving me guru.
I mean, what good are mods if they don't favorably break rules for you every now and again?

Only a dev can do that...
But I have a perfectly good accepted answer that's only 4 votes away from the 40 mark...

(don't worry, I wouldn't actually want you to do that -- you seem like a fine upstanding young citizen -- we wouldn't want you getting mixed up in such hare-brained schemes as re-authoring posts!)
@animuson This is where you're supposed to link the answer, all subtle-like

@animuson I did, up above ElfSlice's YouTube link.

5:02 AM
Yes, but the key to successful advertising is repetition
While I may be 17 votes away, if this isn't deserving of upvotes, what is?

I already upvoted that when you posted it. :P

Well then. I need to find 17 other poor unsuspecting souls.

@animuson -- upvoted, good luck going for Populist. jmac's right, it is a fantastic answer.

My highest scored question on SO is +6. Awesome.

My highest scored one is over 100 on some silly PHP loop question.

Using php is cheating. You should totally use jquery for that.

Oh wait, no. My highest one is apparently 165 on a stupid gmdate question. That one is truly sad.

There isn't a question in with close to triple digit votes.

5:35 AM
Yeah, I've got one from years ago re: PHP and PDO that I answered with a quick doc ref, that's up to 55 and still increases by a vote or two every few weeks.

Did you guys hear that a guy whose beard I admire has beliefs that I don't care about?
Because I did. I heard that a lot today.

Let me guess, he wasn't a fan of brown?

@jmac Nope. That I would care about.
Don't you know me at all, jmac?

@jadarnel27 Tell us the truth, is this bearded guy santa?
Because I know there are a lot of people on street corners spreading his word with some bell-ringing or somesuch

'Tis not Santa, either. Someone with a beard even more respectable.
An American reality television star, no less.

More respectable than Santa? Is it Stallman?

7:16 AM
Sorry for the vagueness. In case you don't know what I'm talking about (what with being in Japan and all), there's some controversy about a guy from a reality show called "Duck Dynasty" that people have been excessively talking about on Facebook today.

Oh, I read something about that on Facebook. I thought you were talking about Jesus though and was trying to be clever.
Wrong on all counts!

Hahaha
I see my satire to was too subtle. Or just not very good. And possibly not even satire.

It sure fooled me.

Hmmm, I still don't have that one hat.
I mean...most of the hats.

Hello. I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, sorry for being a newb, but is there a chat room to get help?
Or is my best bet to simply post a question to meta?

7:28 AM
Oh yeah, I got the hat.
一角獣 in the house!

@culix What do you need?
Someone in here might be able to help out.
Of course, you are always free to just post on Meta.

@jadarnel27 I tried to edit an answer to one of my questions, adding what I intend as clarifying information. My edit was rejected as "incorrect or an attempt to reply". I don't understand why
I'm not sure that specific of an inquiry justifies an entire question on Meta?

@culix Oh. People in the review queues probably wouldn't take the time to realize that you were also the question-asker.
So it kind of looks like you are just adding a bunch of information to an already-accepted answer. Some people have a weird thing about changing stuff in accepting answers.
@culix By the way, it's perfectly acceptable to post that type of question on Meta.

@jadarnel27 Aha, thanks. So I'm not crazy in thinking that info is actual useful/clarifying? :)
@jadarnel27 Is there a way I could ask someone/get some help adding info to that question? Should I contact a mod?

@culix I don't think you're crazy for thinking so.
=)
@culix I'll just do the edit for you =) It is an improvement to the existing answer.
The other possibility would be to add your clarification / extra details as a separate answer, but I don't really think that is necessary in this case.

7:43 AM
@jadarnel27 Oh! Thank you so very much! :)

Haha, no problem, @culix.
Glad to help.
I should probably go to sleep. Work in...a little over 5 hours.

@jadarnel27 Re: adding another answer. Yes I considered that but though the other person should get the rep for answering :)
@jadarnel27 I really appreciate it! I've had some .. rough introductions to communities before so it's very nice to see friendly people :) Thanks!
@jadarnel27 Good luck with work ;)

@culix I met friendly people when I came here. I like to be able to return the favor =)

8:02 AM
for the "Winter is Coming" hat, does one simply need to have one chat message starred on Dec 20?
and presumably said star would also count towards "Chatty Chatty"?

'Tis correct.

roger.
incidentally, i'd like to thank and blame the winter bash for lost productivity at work... :-P come to think of it, i wonder how many work hours have been spent on hat-hunting across the user base...

8:25 AM
Urgh, hit the wrong flag button when reviewing this post. I hit "invalid flags" rather than NOA - will this dispute all flags and cause a problem? Or will I be lost in the signal noise?

@DreadPirateXmas Best not to think about it.
I only need 15 more upvotes for Guru. Which clearly is a noble goal for everyone who reads this message. After all, who doesn't want to know where SO users are from?

@Flyk I feel like Winterbash is promoting community by making us try to bribe favors out of each other for the sake of hats. I don't know if this makes us the Zimbabwe of the internet, but it certainly has increased the favor trade.

speaking of which... @jmac, I've upvoted your Guru shot -- do you mind starring one or two of my posts here? ;-)

@jmac certainly

8:32 AM
(also, thanks for the segue :-P)

@jmac I did just upvote your excellent answer that needed upvotes

See? Currying favor. We could be politicians of meta. If it had an organized government that wasn't just a shadow government for the unicorn overlords.

Hi - back there.
Quick question - do we have an archive for screens related to funny errors or similar stuff related to programming?
I have an urge to post somewhere the exception I got from SharePoint as a warning to the world....

On SO/SE? Nope

@Bart. OK. Let me at least post that here then. Have to vent somehow.
Taken from reflector.
Just. See. How. They. Called. That. Exception.
Now just image our face when an app page bombed and we were greeted by an error that basically said "Please, ignore me".
All while the original page was replaced with the standard SP error page

9:50 AM
Something called "Ignore Me" is one of the most likely candidate to not ignore

@Bart hehe. Remember me an old error message one of my coworker putted in an internal use app. "The app crashed. Let's go eat some Cevapi in the meantime"

Q: How to replace the string

user2065281String htmlString ="<font color='#00ff00' size='100'> SampleText </font>" this is a sample String where I need to change the font size from 100 to 25. I mean original font size / 4. Is there any solution for the above problem? The resulting string should be: "<font color='#00ff00' size='25'> ...

OP posts a confusing question. Many comments and edits later, it's just about a request for free code.

I think the best way to do it is with regular expression. — wm1sr 31 mins ago

Yet it gets seven answers and the OP is rewarded with his free code.
The system is broken when this behaviour is rewarded.
Is there any solution?

Well, it's not zero effort. He did mumble htmlString.replaceAll(regularExpression, regularExpression); :p But the only solution is to close it asap

I like how my down-vote comment has two up-votes, but nobody else has actually down-voted the question.

11:00 AM
@Duncan . Now ye have two happy friends backing that up.
I am so tempted to reply htmlString.Replace("100", "25") but I fear that people would then downvote ME instead.

I would imagine so.

P.s. you read my mind @Duncan

With regards to what?

Nah, the other one. You explained a downvote...

Ah yes. One of those ol' classics. BAM, here's some code. Like it or lump it.

Anyone got much experience with IBM blade servers?
I can't believe in this day and age I'm hunting around for a floppy disk. Curse you, IBM, and your strangely antiquated ways.

12:19 PM
Someone in my office found a floppy disk. This feels very 1990s and I like it.
Despite what the women say, floppy ftw!
