66,166 reputation? Way too many 6's in my reputation. Hopefully I don't land on 66,666...

upvotes animuson <does math> 50 times

Too bad only 20 of those would have any effect.

^ I have a buddy.

@GnomeSlice I think they might be cold enough by now.

Wow, the data dump is huge!
Wait, am I just going to have to redownload everything in a few days anyway? What's the timeline for the next dump, @Shog9?

12:29 AM
@animuson Which site? +500 bounty would be just right...

@jmac mSO.

It's too late! I'm at 66,186 now! :P

I believe animuson merged some tags for me once....
10 downvotes! And a +500 bounty!

I've merged tags for a lot of people...

I know animuson, I've done the math!

@UndotheSnowman should be next few weeks, but last I heard we were still waiting on hardware or something so who knows.

Q: Improving Tag Synonyms

jmacExecutive Summary Jon Ericson asked, Does the tag synonym suggestion system work? The answer, unfortunately, is no. Tag Synonyms were introduced in August 2010: It’s been clear for a very long time now that we needed some kind of tag synonym system, one that the community itself could main...

>
Animuson (67 synonyms)
Robert Harvey (48 synonyms)
minitech (16 synonyms)
BoltClock (15 synonyms)

@jmac Holy cow, that's a masterpiece!

(over the 500 I looked at, obviously you have more long-term, and including on other sites, this is just SO for the 500 as of when I did that)
@UndotheSnowman A search through my MSO profile will quickly find you a lot of data gathered painstakingly by hand.

A: Where in the world do Stack Overflow users say they are from?

jmacI ran this query to gather data on all Stack Overflow users with over 1000 reputation. That got a total of 4,711 unique locations for 48,924 users. Of those 48,924 users, 13,138 did not list a location. Of the remaining 35,786 users, I manually inputted the country for 28,490 (almost 80%), which...

you are amazing.

12:33 AM
(I work in a company that doesn't believe in databases. They use Excel as if it were graph paper, and use color to indicate status rather than anything that can be read by a computer. I am very very good at gathering data by hand)

Heh.
I have some experience in that.

high five for Excel

throws excel on the ground and beats it with a SQL hammer

I love Excel. Its many...quirks...make it such an effective tool
Until they broke half of them in 2007+, but I digress...

My Excel inventory document is getting a bit too large for me to handle, though. I'm thinking about putting all the data into a database.

12:35 AM
@animuson Export it as a .csv and import it into MySQL.

The issue is that the Japanese never liked Word. They used the first (?) graphical word processor called 'Ichitaro' until MS took over the world, and then they all used Excel because it has the tables drawn already and Japanese is fixed-font by default (making it easier to use Excel as a word processor)

Whoa, how did this make it so long?

It's currently 1,880 lines over three pages.

@animuson Bah, nothing. Throw it into a MySQL db.

That is nothing.
1880 lines? I guess I shouldn't show you my 120 mb monstrosities

12:37 AM
I have a subscriber list in MySQL currently >10k rows.

(I have hourly data for 4 years in a dozen categories with all sorts of lookups, etc. The beast takes about 2 minutes to load and calculate -- that is too big)

(not to mention a list of 50,000 comments on SO that might be obsolete)

It only gets cumbersome when you realize you need to add/change a variable in the table.

UPDATE music SET obsolete=1 WHERE form="cassette"
Easy.

All of my Excel vba code has error trapping with on error goto hell. Nobody ever needs to use my code, but it always makes me feel better writing that

12:39 AM
And all the digital games I've downloaded from PSN don't have any sort of barcode or unique ID to identify them with...
That might cause some problems importing into MySQL...
It would error out on line 6.

Why?
Just make an autoincrementing id column to use as your primary key.

12:59 AM
Why are so many wikipedia images licensed under CC-BY-SA? Makes me sad. I wish they'd just release the thing with no licenses. It's a bloody photo of a lightbulb...

licensing is crazy anyway
at least in germany... imagine you go to a photographer to have some standard portrait photos taken. nothing fancy, maybe even just the stuff you use on job applications, id cards, etc.
you MUST check what you are allowed to do with the photos - even if you paid for them you might not be allowed to put them on your website for example

Japan is of a similar mindset.
English wikipedia has a photo:

Photos... on job applications? Now that is weird. ;)

Ditto with German:
Oh, wait, Japanese uses the same image
that's unique!
Maybe it's just people? (The Japanese wikipedia lacks images everywhere
@AnnaLear Japan has it worse. Photos, personal profiles, all personal details, and needs to be hand-written.
@AnnaLear At my interview for my current company, I was asked, "Are you Jewish? My group does business with the Middle East, and it would be hard to use you if you're Jewish." and "In my experience, Americans are stubborn and never do what they're told. I cannot trust Americans. Are you willing to fight to earn my trust by doing what I say for a minimum of 6 months?"

Fun.
At least they're upfront about it?

1:10 AM
They don't see anything wrong with either of those comments.

I'm not entirely convinced this sort of thing doesn't exist here... I bet in some companies a lot of people just get very creative with how they discriminate.

Yeah, you can get rejected for just about anything. As a foreigner applying for jobs, recruiters often blank out personal details so that the employer can't contact you directly and skirt their fee. My favorite was showing up for an interview where nobody had told them I wasn't Japanese
That was a straight up, "You aren't Japanese. Only Japanese can do this job."

Wow.

And Stack Exchange may have rejected my application for Japanese community manager for the same reason ;)

And now we have awkward. :) I don't have much overlap with hiring.

1:14 AM
Foreigners in Japan are refused housing (the agent will mention to the landlord that you are foreign, though I encourage them to point out that I am European-American foreign, not Asian-foreign, which is assuring to many landlords), refused loans (barring marriage to a Japanese national), etc.
@AnnaLear I'm just kidding -- it is a lack of community-building experience I'm sure (and I really didn't think I had much of a chance for that reason)

Never hurts to try.

Completely agreed. Working remotely would have been awesome. Rent a villa in Ubud, Bali, move back to the US sometime in the future, would have been fun.

I enjoyed working remotely while I did it. Not from anywhere as exciting as Bali, but still. :)

Exciting has nothing to do with it. Relaxing is key. Relaxing and good cheap food and drink.
Every year I go for two weeks. Every year I spend the time sleeping, eating, and reading. And I couldn't imagine anything I'd rather do.

That does sound pretty nice.

1:28 AM
Question: I just downloaded the data dump (really big), and I now have like 15 .7z files. How do I turn them into one file? Do I need to do some voodoo magic?

@AnnaLear Yes... but I assume I have to merge them somehow, right?

Great question. I didn't know we provided multiple files, so I'm probably no help.

;(
I guess I'll just start trying stuff.

Take a look inside one or two of them and see what it looks like?

1:30 AM
Working on it now...

@Undo Why'd you download it?

@hichris123 I have some plans for comments.

The "Measuring the impact of comments" post?

Well... I kind of like to flag the obsolete ones.
I flag them in bulk.

And this is your weekend project, flag as many comments as obsolete as possible?

1:34 AM
@hichris123 More a daily project.
Mods have asked me to slow down on several occasions.
It's great seeing the reactions of the low-traffic site mods when they are suddenly getting >40 flags/day ;)

How many can you flag in a day?

@AnnaLear I can't seem to extract them, even. (using the Ubuntu version of the 7z command line thingy)
@hichris123 On SO, 100. On several other sites, more than fifty.
For every ten helpful flags you cast, you get another flag you can cast. So it has exponential growth.
gtg, brb

Okay.

Don't say 'flag' around me, it makes me nervous.

@UndotheSnowman do you get an error?

1:38 AM
Can I flag that while I'm at it? @Gnome

Um... what is that?

@hichris123 It's music.
> Wonderfully realised mashup of chiptunes and 80's synth-heavy electronic music. Got that retro feel in more ways than one. Definitely recommend it.

Thank you. You see, I thought it was just sound. Music is a completly new topic to me. What is this music?

@hichris123 It's... well listen to it! =]
And see what you think. ;]

1:47 AM
@GnomeSlice oh hey, that's nice.

@AnnaLear Pretty cool huh

yeah

@AnnaLear Are you into the 80's inspired sound?

Depends on the sound, but usually.

Huge free collection of simliar stuff (minus the chiptunes)

1:48 AM
thanks, I will :)

No problem. =]
I'm just happy somebody finally clicked one of my links. :P

It's actually quite good, but how do you explain this?

Everybody on the gaming chat ignores me now.

"00:00 / 03:30"
Aww, poor Gnome.

@hichris123 The second number is the length of the track, the first one shows how far into it you are
@AnnaLear One more for you futurecityrecords.bandcamp.com/album/…
;]

1:50 AM
@GnomeSlice I know, but I'm listening to it.
The length indicator only works if I pause it and resume playing it.

@hichris123 Weird. Bandcamp works fine for me.
I'm a big fan of Bandcamp... Loudr.com has been getting pretty cool though.
And they allow you to redownload stuff you buy, which is nice...
So what are you guys/girls up to?

Fixing things, merging accounts, the usual. :)

Reading a book (paper, not eBook).
Strange I know.

@AnnaLear A generic Can not open file as archive error.

@AnnaLear Not mine I hope? ;]
@hichris123 Not at all!

1:55 AM
@GnomeSlice I can neither confirm nor deny... :)

@GnomeSlice Probably putting some account-breaking code in your account.

@AnnaLear I do have a sockpuppet if you can find it.
No asking the mods on arqade though, that's cheating
They recognize my throw-away email addresses now. :P
Also I don't actually use it.

I have access to more info than they do, so I bet I could figure it out... :)
But meh.

@GnomeSlice In case you haven't yet noticed, people with access to the DB can do amazing things.

Heh.

1:57 AM
I don't know about "amazing", but I can certainly do more things. Quantity > quality, amirite?

@AnnaLear Can you see who has me ignored in chat?

Actually, nevermind, that's private I guess.

@GnomeSlice I can see how many people ignored you. Could probably dig up who, but I'm not 100% sure how.
Not that I could reveal that even if I did, though.

Whoa, when I ignore @GnomeSlice all his messages go away!

1:58 AM
@UndotheSnowman Yeah, that's the idea.
A bunch of people I considered friends on the gaming chat have me ignored. =[

@AnnaLear What can't you access?

@hichris123 Anna can access everything.

Yeah, pretty much everything. I'm on the sub-section of the community team that has the same access as developers.

Everything? Wow.

1:59 AM
Just doesn't want to go accessing it all right now, because it really doesn't matter.

@AnnaLear How many flags am I up to now?

@GnomeSlice Stop bugging the CM.

@UndotheSnowman ;]

Too many.

But even diamond mods can see that ;)

2:00 AM
I'm not telling you stuff we don't tell you on purpose. ;)
Assuming you mean flags cast against you.

Chat flags

Do I still have 100 more than the next guy?

I think diamond mods can see that too.

gah, wrong chat server.

2:02 AM
I've been trying to clean up my image
Hasn't been working out very well for me...

There's no count on the page that shows all of your posts that were flagged and I can't be bothered to count. Or look it up otherwise. Let's go with "a lot"? :)

You want to make that one more? :)

@AnnaLear Heh
@hichris123 If you do it somebody will approve it.
So please don't.

@GnomeSlice Just hit 10k, then you get to see the flags as they get cast against you!

I'm past 10k already.

2:03 AM
Oh

Took me like 3 years though.

Hmm... is @Shog9 here? I have a question about the data dump.

@Undo Does he ever sleep?

@hichris123 The data suggests so.

He's probably just checking into your account in those hours.

2:07 AM
oh.

"Hmm, has Undo mad any mistakes lately? Should I break his account?"

Let's merge Undo with NULL!

Undo = NULL
That should fix everything.

Aaaaaaaa!

@UndotheSnowman I hope you're happy. I'm now downloading the data dump.

2:08 AM
@AnnaLear You don't have it locally?

nope

I have literally zero need to do that.
It might live somewhere on the network, but I don't actually know where that would be.

Isn't it like 15 GB?

yep

2:09 AM
Hahahaha that would take me like a month

ETA: just under 3 hours

=P
@AnnaLear ლ(ಥ益ಥლ)

:)

Really? That would have been a great thing to download to my new computer to stress-test the Internet drivers... Damn, why didn't I think of that?
I blame you, @Undo - which is rare because normally I'd blame Tim Stone.

Hey guys, how does this look behance.net/gallery/…
everything nice and readable?
all the project tags and shit seem okay?
wooo 1 appreciation! ;]

2:10 AM
looks okay here, though I haven't actually tried clicking anything

@GnomeSlice Looks nice to me ;)

@GnomeSlice What's your internet speed?

@UndotheSnowman Sweet. Video plays okay?
@hichris123 'slow'

Meaning?

@GnomeSlice yup

2:11 AM
We have 'high speed' but there's only one provider out where I love and it ranges anywhere from the occasional 700KB/S (usually at like 2 AM) to less than 10
It's usually around 30-60 KB/s

I'm lucky to hit 1MB/s

@AnnaLear Are you still listening to Monomer? I forgot how great this album was.

Wow, I'm better than you two. 1.2/1.3 MB/s.
I thought I was slow.

I timed out of speedtest.net a couple times

@animuson It sure does stress the internet drivers. It stresses a lot of other things too.

2:12 AM

@GnomeSlice That's possible?

@GnomeSlice yeah. and it is pretty great.

@AnnaLear utorrent is best

@AnnaLear Good luck ;)

@hichris123 Yeah apprently.

2:12 AM
@AnnaLear What's the ETA now?

1h 52m

I just threw Transmission on the Ubuntu server in my closet.
And let it loose.

I'm gonna go home before that finishes, but still.

I'm probably making some dumb mistake.

@AnnaLear Where are you? West-Coast?

2:13 AM
NYC

You're still at work?

@hichris123 Stack Exchange people are quite enthusiastic about their jobs.
(and they have food at the office)

To be fair, I didn't even get here till 11:30 or so this morning.
And then I took a walk in the afternoon.

Still, quite dedicated.

@AnnaLear You wanna play Hearthstone?

2:15 AM
Last thing I torrented was The Boondocks
And before that was... er... nothing.

@KasraRahjerdi Hah. Yeah, let's do it.

Yay. I just got demolished by 2 priests in a row.

(^ another reason SE people stay at the office)

Well we can play Hearthstone at home (like I am now), the free beer while you do it is a great help though.

2:16 AM
I hate how full trains are at "normal" quitting time, so this works out nicely for me 99% of the time.

Sounds logical

I can just imagine the SE meeting room set up with 20 computers and all the employees sitting there yelling at each other as they played Diablo III...

secretly wants to work at SE

@animuson Please. Private offices. ;)

@animuson We actually don't do LAN parties but that's a great idea. We do Magic the Gathering fridays however
Except we can't play MTG tomorrow since we have a lame party :(

2:18 AM
I bought a new MtG deck at PopExpo last weekend
Because I lost my old green deck. =[

There couldn't possibly be any problems with a kid just old enough to be here without COPPA getting him working at SE, could there?
wants to work on iOS app

I think SE should hire me.
As uh... an animator...
nvm

Jobs for everybody!
3

@GnomeSlice You could make the next Clippy!

Woohoo!

2:19 AM
@UndotheSnowman HAH

@GnomeSlice We do booster drafts, no constructed decks.

Really, though, I would really like to work on the iOS app just for the fun of it.

That's more the kind of stuff I do ^

All I wanted for Christmas was an SE job!

@animuson And all you got was this crappy digital hat...

2:20 AM
In fact that's exactly the stuff I do, because I did it!

@UndotheSnowman Ours is a long way from beta-ing, you can always make your own using the API though :)

Nobody tell fido or they might copyright claim my video
And it's my main portfolio piece right now

@KasraRahjerdi I have. But I don't have access to the juicy things like voting and such.

@UndotheSnowman You will as soon as my app comes out.

@KasraRahjerdi Huh?

2:21 AM
When the android app come out (or, soon after) we're releasing API v2.2 which has a lot more write capabilities.

Hip hip, hooray!

My app (the android one) is built entirely on the (right now private) new API version

The only thing you won't get is account creation

@KasraRahjerdi There's more than one of you working on the Android app, right?

2:22 AM
@UndotheSnowman Yep, there's three of me us.

Ah.
thinks up amazing things to do with API

I don't even know what API means
=P

And now... homeward. Later, y'all.

2:23 AM
@AnnaLear Peace

@UndotheSnowman Neat! We have three folks working on our official iOS app ATM but since we don't really do "deadlines" the alpha testing should start in 6-8 units.

Uh oh, my SSL certificate expired. :o

Every time I play Raptor Safari I get sad that the expansion/sequel was abandoned. =[

@UndotheSnowman what's up?

@Shog9 I just downloaded the data dump, and I'm not sure how to extract the SO part.
Because there's like 15 files.

2:26 AM
@UndotheSnowman and?

@Shog9 He probably wants you to tell him how to do that.

hmm

I copied one and renamed it stackoverflow.com.7z, but 7z x stackoverflow.com.7z fails with a Can not open file as archive.

Well, start by having 7zip
Next, use 7zip

I'm on Ubuntu Server
if it makes a difference.

2:27 AM
It might, but I've never tried extracting a 7z file on Ubuntu so I couldn't really say
I guess you might want to start by just verifying the download isn't corrupt though, just in case that would end up saving you time later on.

What's the MD5 or something supposed to be?
(although I've messed with a few things, so it might not work anyway)
I can extract the single-file ones just fine, though.
oh wait, I might have it.

Can jquery stop youtube oneboxing? I really really really would like to stop youtube oneboxing.

Thanks. The images are just big, and they don't provide value to me, so while others may appreciate said links, I want to be able to hide them so others can enjoy oneboxing as it was intended

@jmac There's a script somebody made for destroying individual messages.
Lemme find it for you.

2:32 AM
Yeesh, unzipping a 700mb .7z isn't easy

Q: Set fire to people in chat

fredleyHow many times have you been overwhelmed by your desire to set fire to people in Stack Exchange chat? Well now you can! Arqade Fire Get Chrome Extension Get Grease Monkey User Script Arqade Fire is a chat message immolation tool that will burn away messages. It adds a small extra button nex...

CC @jmac
It sounds silly but it's good for hiding messages.
It works on images and oneboxes

Do I want to switch to Chrome? That is the ¥64 question.

@Shog9 Looks like I'm able to unzip them now - what's inside each of them?

@UndotheSnowman (I assume you figured it out, but you just point it at the first one and it uses all the pieces to reconstruct the original)

@TimStone Oh?
Good.

2:35 AM
Yeah, they're just partial files because the archive is huge.

It might be OK to have the documented somewhere.

@TimStone one of these days this is going to onebox and I'm going to buy you like a car or something.

@UndotheSnowman xml files

@TimStone So saying 7z x stackoverflow.com.7z.001 makes it automatically merge in the stuff from .002-.016?
@Shog9 Ok, thanks!
Sorry for bugging you ;)

np; just eating

2:36 AM
@Tim, are you the genius behind the suggested tags on MSO? The mythical beasts that nobody seems to know about?
30
Q: How are "Suggested Tags" chosen?

jmacAfter you've typed in a question, you get suggested tags that appear that look like this: It appears that you need a minimum amount of characters (much like the limit on 'Similar Questions' in the right-side pane): you must have entered a title (any length) and a minimum body length of...

If I was it'd be pretty awkward, since I don't work for SE. :P

But you are always so enlightening. I assumed you did. I have made an error in judgment, clearly!

@UndotheSnowman It should, yeah.

@jmac no one's answered that yet? That's @balpha - guessing he's been too preoccupied with HILARIOUS HOLIDAY HEADWEAR.

@GnomeSlice I dunno about all that, but it will surely be a glorious day.

2:38 AM
Also known in common terms as hats.

pretty sure the answer is, "arcane Bayesian magic"

@Shog9 Isn't that all of SE?

only the good parts

Some of it is unicorn magic.
Slightly different aftertastes.

Wow you guys are famous

2:40 AM
@Shog9 Yeah, nobody's answered it, so I figure I'll keep bringing it up at opportune times and pray for enlightenment from on high. Or from @balpha when I catch him.

Is this like the chatroom for SE employees and celebrities?

@Gnome I'm not a celebrity... backs away.

Neither am I, I guess.

@Shog9 You just said the same word three times! Bayesian = Arcane = Magic. Haven't you seen the power of the Let's Make a Deal question to explode people's otherwise useful brains?

Although I suppose I kind of am.

2:42 AM
I actually have a life, so later people.

StackExchange is my life
Which is ironic because I still have no real idea how it works
3 years later
sigh

It works because people are committed to the site and spend their time making it (and the 'net) a better place

I get the general idea, I just never have anything to contribute to site discussions.
Anything meaningful I guess.

3:25 AM
Random thought - Am I the only one who cringes every time I @ someone who's using a holiday username at the thought of all those "Who in the world is '(random holiday username)'" thoughts after the holidays are over?
I believe I've got a possible change for that that wouldn't involve any additional DB queries (which I believe was the major problem with the last proposal about that that I saw), just checking what's on the rest of the page, but I'm wondering whether I should even go to the trouble of writing it up (because I think another reason was that comments are second-class citizens).

@Dukeling I sometimes worry about that too. That's why my standard username is a prefix of my Meta holiday username - when the dust settles, onlookers will have some clue who the sleigh was. (Also, it allows those involved to blissfully ignore the holiday suffix if they so choose.)
