@MarcGravell / @balpha - you folks around?

I am; something up?

@MarcGravell ah I was just kicked out of TL
but @BoltClock did a refresh on my profile & I'm back in

so... all sorted?

@MarcGravell yes, thanks

12:14 PM
Just hung this above my workstation ^_^
Lets see if it works...

Hey guys, just curious, but are question-bans handed out in batches? Would anyone happen to know that? I'm just surprised by the apparent grouping of question-ban related junk on MSO from time to time. (And yes, I AM procrastinating)...

Lix
Well I'm not really sure of the actual procedure of the bans - but the "batch" behavior you are seeing could be because of a mod simply going through the flag lists and acting accordingly... They might have simply come across several cases that deserve a ban in one session...
Just my $0.02 :P

@Lix If @Bart is referring to regular question bans (and not suspensions), then mods don't hand those out. Wake up Lix =P

Lix
Oh? Mods don't dish out question bans? I was unaware of that...
@timJ - Its almost 15:30 here... I probably should wake up huh? ;)

@Lix Gah. Stupid time zones. Sorry it's 08:22 here, maybe I should wake up.
Bu yeah, question bans and answer bans are algorithmic; there is no mod involvement at all.

Lix
12:23 PM
ok... good to know... :)

Yeah, as I understand, they are handed out automatically without mod involvement. So I'm assuming this might be a scheduled task.

@Bart That's a likely explanation. I would expect it to be a per-ask-attempt thing, but it could be a batch process that sets a flag on all eligible accounts.

Which could result in this grouping of "Hey, I didn't read this message I just copy pasted. Could you please point me to the exact same link?"-type questions.

Right.

Anyway, as I said, I'm procrastinating :) Back to some work

12:46 PM
"Work"...that sounds familiar. What is that?

1:21 PM
work = force×distance, remember?

@DanielFischer No, $w=\int \vec F\cdot \mathrm d\vec x$

@TimManishEarth Yeah, but I only work straight.

@DanielFischer $w=\int |\vec F|\mathrm d|\vec x|$, still
You don't work uniformly, do you?

Sure do.

@DanielFischer Right now you ain't working, right?
;-)

1:25 PM
$\vec{F} \equiv 0$

@DanielFischer Aaah
@DanielFischer Y aren't you on math.SE/phy.SE/chem.SE/bio.SE? You seem to know TeX (and you probably use ChatJax). You must've gotten that from somewhere..

No, math.SE would take way too much of my time (well, SO already does). Not really competent and interested enough in physics/chemistry/biology.

@DanielFischer I stay away from math.SE and SO--everyone knows more than me and they're both rather hectic
@DanielFischer What if I told you that we have FLOATING FROGS on physics?

I'd ask: What are floating frogs, and what are they good for?

@DanielFischer physics.stackexchange.com/a/23530/7433 They aren't good for anything... But c'mon! A floating frog!

I saw a presentation recently from a Russian group who were using plutonium as a dopant in ceria crystals to make them glow..
in The Periodic Table on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, May 8 at 12:54, by Richard Terrett
@Aesin - to achieve what precisely?
in The Periodic Table on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, May 8 at 12:55, by Aesin
@RichardTerrett: As far as I can tell, mostly just to achieve glowing crystals.

2:02 PM
@luc - thanks ;) I was quite surprised that no one jumped on that question earlier... I don't think that anyone wants to see those kinds of questions here... or any where for that matter :P

Lix
2:29 PM
@timJ - it is a mouth full of a title isn't it? :P

@Lix Haha, indeed =) I think I read it at least three times without understanding it.
> Redirecting users asking for "getting started" to MSO asking for tag info wiki update there?

Lix
hehe

Then I read the post, and came back to the title and was like "Ohhhh."

Lix
I did the same - except my response was more "Ohhh NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!"

Haha. Good answer, by the way.

Lix
2:36 PM
^_^ thanks man :) Now both you and "the devil" approve ;) haha

"Hello MSO! I'm interested in learning , but the tag wiki doesn't link to enough tutorials. Could someone please add all the tutorials I will need to learn this? TIA!"

Lix
urban dictionary doesn't help much with TIA :P

@Lix I don't always agree with the devil, but when I do, I agree with him about Lix's answers.

Lix
Please will someone create and update ! kthnkxbi

Hahaha

Lix
2:39 PM
lol :P

THNKS IN ADVANCED U GUYS!!!11!

Lix
oh my.... TIA.... that is appalling! In Stack Overflow terms :P

@Lix Yeah. You see it a lot though on SO. I have edited it (and things like it) out of many posts.

Lix
I got asked today if I would be willing to login to an OP's FTP server to look for the problem :P
no thanks ma'am...
@cha - Hi! Thought I'd go first this time... ;)
@cha - As you have so graciously hosted us here it is only fitting that you are greeted appropriately ;)

3:06 PM
Hmmm

Lix
oh no... I think we have angered him... ;)

Hi, whats time it is there @Lix

Lix
Time to go home actually :P just past 18:00... why do you ask?

just, so you are 2:30 hours late from my time, its 20:30 here

Fun fact: If you do a Google search for "Time Israel", it will show you the current time at the top of the search results.
I think that's a pretty neat feature =) I did not know about it for a long time.

3:12 PM
Yes, I know that already :P

Lix
oh yes - I use that all the time :)
@timJ - have you cooked with Google yet? ;)

@Lix No, but I do remember you telling me about that. Very cool.

Lix
i also use the define keyword a a lot... Gives a definition of the word right there in the search results...

I like that one too. And unit conversions.

Lix
that might be a google.com/ncr feature though...

3:15 PM
@Lix What is that?

Lix
NCR - No country relation... It prevents the results you get back from being filtered by your location... I'll mostly get hebrew sites if I don't use it...
or no country redirect.... in anycase - it forces google for me to be in english :P

Oh, gotcha.
Is English your first language @Lix or do they just teach it from a young age in Israel / Zimbabwe?
(I don't know what the spoken language is in either country)

Lix
Well hebrew is my first language - when I arrived in zim I didn't speak a work of english... But my mother tounge is english... so... i guess its not such a clear cut case :P
I think/dream in English :P If that means anything :P

English is my third Language :P

Lix
@luc - oh - well you have a really good command of it then!

3:21 PM
telling me ? @Lix

@Lix I kind of figured. Your English is very natural, so I thought you might have grown up speaking it.

Lix
Yea I did... that and a whooole lot of british/southern african/zimbabwean slang that I still can;t get rid of :P

ok, well it may be because of lot of chatting. And yes, from chatting i learnt more english
I have many friends from all over world
on orkut, yahoo

Lix
yea - I'd say simply talking the language is the best way to learn it... to not be afraid to make mistakes....

But same english , i cant speak as no habit of speaking english in office or in friends group

Lix
3:26 PM
right friends - I'm off... Im sure I'll see you guys around :) TTYL!

okies
nice talking with you @Lix, see ya :)
Have a nice dinner
bye @Lix @Timjadarnel27

Um. Laterz.
I wonder if Lucifer is a common name in India, and I'm just making a vast assumption about the name being a reference to the fallen angel from the Christian Bible.
Or perhaps I'm over-thinking things.
is always over-thinking things

@timj oh, it isn't. I know where the name comes from, one sec
There was recently an ultra-budget superhero movie with lots of SFX, and little plot to talk of. (Google "Ra. One") In that, the protagonist's son uses Lucifer as his gaming username.. And the movie revolves around a game.
The son was rather fond of villians, thus the username was Lucifer
So it is a reference, in a roundabout way
It's not a common name, trust me :p

3:45 PM
@TimManishEarth Ah, nice explanation. Thanks man. Curiosity satisfied.

@lucifer am I correct?
@timj alrighty :D
@Lucifer third language-->Gujrati, Hindi, then English, right?
I'm Marathi, English, then Hindi, but my English is better than the others (born/brought up in Boston)
I have a case similar to that of @lix. Marathi first language, but I (mainly) think in English

4:00 PM
@TimManishEarth That's interesting. Why Boston? Was you family there for work or school or something when you were born and growing up?

My parents had shifted there, and worked there.. 25 years I think.. We came back five years ago since my parenta wanted to be near their grandparents.

Oh, neat.

Well, not 25 years in boston, 25 years in the States. I was in(near) Boston my whole childhood there, though..

That's quite a transition, though, I'm sure.

Well, I used to visit nearly every year, so I was used to Bombay. But the education systems are vastly different. Nearly failed first term..
In the States I'd just have to read a chapter once and I'd usually ace tests. The system is understanding-based. Here, there's too much focus on memorization. I naïvely applied my old, easy methods of studying here. Biiig mistake :p

4:11 PM
Oh, no kidding. I guess you've adjusted now?

Yep :D
Still hate memorization

Also, is this college, or high school? Profile says your 18 =)
Yeah, me too. I never understood the need for it.

Transition. Passed high school, vacations right now
Though down here high school is called "Junior College"
:P

Interesting. Ah, I miss summer break =D

You're a programmer. Put all your code on compile. Voila! Summer break! ;-)

4:17 PM
Compile. ALL. The codez.

None of the projects here take all that long to compile. Certainly not long enough for rolling-office-chair-sword-fights =)

:P recompile the kernel first

Oh ManishEarth. Real .NET devs don't use Linux =P

<--does not know .NET, actually hasn't used Linux much

4:25 PM
Haha, yes you've mentioned that. I enjoyed my brief experience with Ubuntu.
I should really install that on a partition now that I have more hard drive space.

Im planning on doing something similar

4:36 PM
Does the fact that we hang out in a Tavern all day make us all alcoholics?

Only if you drink, only if you drink.

I more of am logged in on my phone. Or have a tab open while programming/etc. @timj, on the other hand, does nothing but hang out here :p

I just have a background tab open and have a peep every now and then when bored waiting for the compiler or @ makes noises for me.

@awood NOISE!
I use rchern's script, and it changes the icons in the bookmark bar as well, so I can keep it on mute and still know what's going on, even when I'm on a different Chrome window ^.^

4:52 PM
@TimStone =)
@TimManishEarth Hey! I resemble that remark.

@awood like now?

@Moshe exactly (although I'm good at forgetting and ending up ignoring it)

@awood join the Tims and you'll get better at ignoring it :p
You know, you can add a single letter to your username and make it represent the whole network...
@AtwoodLand

5:17 PM
/me is angry at public beta rep requirements

5:29 PM
Got to go, cya folks!

Peace.

6:16 PM
"Estimated delivery: Between 6 - 8 business days" - No no no! It's weeks, not business days!

6:44 PM
Golly. It's like they've never even been to this website before. The nerve.

I'm still waiting to see Justin Bieber: The Video Game...

/blames Marc

I want to make a Stack Exchange Clue game... We need people, objects, and rooms.
Obvious object: the pointy stick...

It was Zypher in the server room with the shotgun!

and Tim Stone should definitely be one of the people. :P

6:49 PM
I don't kill people, only dreams, only dreams.

Then you shouldn't have anything to worry about during my investigation
Chat needs games... like werewolf

am I right in assuming that editing to add on questions that ought to have it is considered useful given the proposed meta split?

Hmm, that's a good question...I don't see why not, if the question is Stack Overflow specific.
Whether or not it actually will aid in the split might be debatable, since I'm sure that'll require tons of review anyway, but I don't see any harm at least.

Some of them probably ought to be made more generic too
e.g. there's nothing about meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/89333/… which is specific to SO

7:25 PM
SO would be a much better place if people saved the energy they now put into posting snarky comments and links to that awful "What SO is not" list and used it to edit instead.
7

/agree
I think that list is silly.

My achievement of the day: a question went from zero to four close votes while I was editing. It stayed open for 13 minutes after I finished editing.
(Sadly, close vote five showed up while I was writing that last message.)

Swallow sadness (like a boss)

Oh. You have never seen the Andy Samberg video "Like a Boss".
(Which is not work-appropriate, FYI)
@PopularDemand Sorry, I was making reference to a comedy video. You should look it up later. That and "I'm on a Boat". Funny stuff =)

7:48 PM
@PopularDemand Could probably use a bit more editing

I'm pondering it.

Gotta think that's a tough question to answer no matter how you ask it
This isn't exactly, "How should I evaluate email programs / cameras / fish tanks"

Yeah, that would have been easier.

@awoodland Yeah. Strictly-speaking, SO-specific stuff was always supposed to be tagged that way. But there wasn't much call for it.
@PopularDemand LOL... Someone flagged your comment as NC.

8:38 PM
I should not have have stayed up until 1:30am playing Diablo last night.

@Timjadarnel27 so you're saying Diablo is evil?

lol
@awoodland I'm going to go with that, because the alternatives all indicate I'm at fault somehow. And that's obviously not it.

Is tag ordering broken? The latest meta question has the tag listed last...
