@DanielFischer Translate what?
Does anyone know whether link-only answers get deleted outright when people say Delete in the low-quality review queue, as opposed to converted to a comment?

@DanielFischer Translation:
> I'd answer, but I'm too lazy to figure out what words should prefix "operator precedence rule".
@Mechanicalsnail There's no automatic conversion to comments in /review. If a moderator sees it and thinks it's worth saving, they can do so - but generally, that's not a good idea.
"I also have this problem, halp?" is no better as a comment

@Shog9 I bow to your language skills, thanks.

@Shog9 But a comment posted as an answer may still be a helpful comment; and the link from a link-only answer may be useful for anyone else wanting to write a real answer later.

@Mechanicalsnail In theory, yes. If it's useful in answering the question, then don't delete it.
Once you're speculating - "This doesn't answer the question, and I can't see any point to it, but in theory it might be useful to someone" - you're over-thinking this. Either it's worthless (delete) or it's not (don't).

@Shog9 Then we'd be keeping an awful lot of link-only answers.

12:15 AM
@Mechanicalsnail Eh...

Fairly often I see a link to e.g. a blog post that essentially answers the question.

If it *does* answer the question, then you've two reasonable choices:
1) Do nothing. If the link breaks at some point, oh well. We're actually working on a dedicated system for reviewing broken links, but that'll take a while.
2) Edit it to include the relevant information.
If it answers the question *in theory* then you also have two reasonable choices:
1) Do nothing. Leave it for someone who can say with confidence whether or not it answers the question *in practice.*
2) Delete it. If it's not clear that or how it answers the question, then the person posting it should have made it clear.

Q: New review queue needs a "Convert to comment" option

Adam RackisI know the issue of converting link-only answers to comments has been brought up before, but this is specific to the new review queue. The new queue makes it simple to delete link-only answers, and add a canned comment for the benefit of the answerer; but I really hate pushing the button to re...

Q: How should helpful answers that are just links be handled?

NullUserException อ_อThere has been a "movement" of sorts on Stack Overflow. Users are flagging questions that are just a link or little more than a link, like: http://stackoverflow.com/a/4737028/396458 http://stackoverflow.com/a/4710255/396458 http://stackoverflow.com/a/4582798/396458 Not only that, they have be...

The problem I have with "convert to comment" is that folks over-use it (I see this all the time in mod flags): answer seems lazy? Overrated? From someone with the wrong color of gravatar? SHOULDA BEENA COMMENT!
A link-only answer is in no way improved by turning it into a comment.

@Shog9 It takes up less screen space...

12:20 AM
@Mechanicalsnail Takes up even less space if it's deleted.
If it's worth something, then taking up less space isn't exactly a good goal - a fully-fleshed-out answer should take up even more space.
IMHO, you're really asking the wrong question. Don't ask, "Is this a link-only answer?, ask "Does this answer the question?"
3
...and then, "does it need improvement"?
...and then, "can I provide those improvements?"
...and then, "do I care enough to do so?"
...and then, "is there anything good on TV?"

A: Can't link-only answers be auto-deleted instead of showing up in the review queue?

Bill the LizardLink-only answers shouldn't get an automatic delete vote. If they should, then this could be scripted. When you go to /review the note under Low Quality Posts says "Identify, then improve or delete low-quality posts." You always have the option to improve the post by clicking 'Edit' instead of...

pretty good answer, imho

@Shog9 Oh hell no, I'm not watching TV.

@TimYiJiang That's why you have more edits than me

1 hour later…
1:54 AM
@Shog9 Plus you get to visualize it burning to a well-deleted crisp as the post colour turns red. It's like a bon fire, but without all that inconvenient prep work.

2:11 AM
@jadarnel27 Yes! I miss that place!

2:36 AM
I knew everyone else was a replicant!

Pffft, totally not true. I'm skynet.

Ugh. Okay, I'm trying to write a script that increments the font size on an element until the size gets too big and the element gets a new line
It works on Chrome, but on Firefox the browser appears to report no change in the height of the element with every iteration
How the hell am I suppose to debug this?
Huh, the jsfiddle works perfectly. This is getting weirder

I wonder how Grace Note is doing. I haven't seen that Stack Exchange employee around in a while.

7:38 AM
Indeed.

8:20 AM
Hello peoples!
Long time no see :)
@TimYiJiang Via CSS?
As in, are you changing the elements .style.xyz?
Or the font size of a font element?
There may be some precedence clashes
An !important may be screwing up something
Or the user agent stylesheet

@Manishearth JavaScript

@TimYiJiang Checked th euser agent stylesheet? And the preexisting stylesheet on the webpage?

You know, increases font-size by one, while the height of the element does not differ by more than font-size compared to the previous height
I'm building this website

??
As in?
@TimYiJiang Is that what's happening or what you're trying to do?

What I'm doing. The problem was for some reason the browser doesn't think the height is changing

8:30 AM
link to fiddle?

Nah, I got it working by bringing the text, which was nested in a child element, to the parent which the font-size adjustment is happening on

oh kk
@TimYiJiang Just curious, why didn't you want to create a Wikipedia account for webapps.stackexchange.com/questions/22038/…?
And do you want anything else added to the script?

6 hours later…
2:28 PM
@TimStone How many tabs do you have open?!

@jadarnel27 Uhh

Yowza!

Wow :)
Use workspaces or something

Oy, major brain fart.
Me: Why does my ps3 still stutter while streaming on my wireless N network with full signal strength?
(20 minutes later)
Oh right, it's not plugged in to that.
I should probably get around to fixing that eventually.

can i propose a building.sx.com in german language?

9:00 PM
=> Area 51, you can propose "$whatver in german"
but to be honest - even though i'm german - i hope none of those suggestion actually outlive commitment or even beta

9:54 PM
@ThiefMaster thank you. But why do you hope that?

I think it splits communities/knowledge.
At least for programming sites english is the language pretty much everyone speaks.

in general i support your oppinion. But look at this: area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/47602/bauwesen you can't discuss this international
everything about building and constructing is very different outside germany. So i think this is a special situation
For all the software stuff i fully agree, that we live in one world.

Ah.. yeah, for something like that it probably makes sense. I guess that kind of proposal will have more chances when the SE engine is ready to support foreign-language sites.

You can support that proposal if you like... I would be glad ;-)

Not really my field of interest

9:59 PM
how can i promote this new SX?
I wrote a message in meta.diy.sx, but there are 99% USA and 1% from Canada

Are there any german forums related to that topic?
If yes, try advertising there in a way that doesn't make them ban you as a spammer
Are you a student/professor/etc. in that area? Spread the word at your university

i fear they will feel bad about promoting there.

I heard a lot of those "Lets' do stackoverflow.com " In X/Y/Z language fail because they never achieve critical mass. (Dis)Agree?
Oh by X/Y/Z I mean Italian/Greek/Thai

it could be possible in german
Germans are very active in opensource online-discussions and they are DIY fans
Germans pay more for their houses then others. There is even a community for restoring very old houses or even building timbered houses.

@HeitorChang: there is at least one that passed the commitment stage
i think it's turkish or something like that

10:14 PM
which topic?

gotcha thief
yeah if turkish passed german will pass
can i commit even if i don't "SPRACHE" german???
seriously, i might just show my face once a week to say hi at most

sure i can translate for you and you can vote of course
google translator is a good help too

oh yeah good point
google translator is alright
where's the link to area 51? i'll commit right now

Bauwesen

Proposed Q&A site for builders, architects, building owners and construction engineers in germany.

Currently in definition.

better join today

dude, is this architecture???

10:18 PM
it includes architecture too

ok i clicked the link, now what???
i don't see a link or button to follow
i did log in as heitor chang

you can follow

how do i do that/??

and vote questions up that look interesting to yuou

sorry' i'm completely ignorant on area 51

10:20 PM
there is a blue box
on top left

@HeitorChang I'm not that sure. At least judging by the amount of crap (language/spelling/grammar-wise) coming from turkish users vs the amount coming from german users we have more people who don't have a big problem with an english community

(or orange?)

dude, germans are serious people

But then again if de.stackoverflow.com would ever become reality I'd run for moderator there for sure (unless SO moderators would automatically have moderator privileges on the localized versions which wouldn't be too unlikely assuming it wouldn't be a separate site but simply similar to view provided by facebook.SO) simply to make sure the crap that is posted on most german programming forums will be trashed quickly

they build f******* bmws and mercedes
think about it
ever hear about turkish car manufacturers?? yeah, didnt think so

10:23 PM
Haha, would you drive a turkish car?

i think most turkish people drive german cars
40 years ago the german car industry employed many turkish people to help in the factory.

no idea, but i don't care where the car comes from as long as it's good and not overpriced

of course they got the cars a bit cheaper

<- driving a toyota

<- sailing ;-)

10:26 PM
through the air or on water? :p

1 time in air, and often on water

but, bmw gets way more respect than MR Ataturk's car
I mean, I respecT Ataturk and all, but he's not a car builder. nor an architect

heh, I'd totally love to learn flying ultralight planes (motorized ones though) at some (probably far) point in the future

ok MR jonas
I am following your proposal I found the link

fine
i also thought about a maritime.SX forum with the topics sailing navigation speedboat, motorboat...

10:29 PM
there is no suggestion for that on area51 yet?

at least i have not found it

i know there is one for aviation.. wouldn't be that unlikely that there's one for watersports etc too

F*** Yeah, +50 rep for confirming email

are you in israel? I heard the war Is getting scary
hey how do i delete my question??? sorry I'm a complete area 51 n00b... :(
ok deleted
yeah I got -2 already.. oh well live and learn

@HeitorChang I'm not in Israel. Thanks for asking.

@jonas ok I posted a bogus question on your site
Was sollte die maximale Höhe für einen Wolkenkratzer von # 4289 aus Beton gebaut werden?

@HeitorChang War is always a scary thing. There are militants in Gaza who have been firing hundreds of rockets at civilians in Israel.

@jonas original is What should be the maximum height for a skyscraper built of #4289 grade concrete?
the middle eastern situation breaks my heart
there's this guy I know "MAhan esfahani" who proposed a keyboard / harpsIchord contest between Israel and Iran, instead of war

11:42 PM
@HeitorChang Hehe.

yeah, the facebook folks said, bibi and mahmoud don't give a d******* about musIc

@HeitorChang It's not that simple. See this: youtube.com/watch?v=63hTOaRu7h4
@HeitorChang It's not about Bibi. He's just one man.

11:56 PM
