6:00 PM
Hmm, I'm hesitant to wake up my laptop...people might start trying to ask me questions on IM.

might start? been trying!
:p

I wasn't referring to you :P

Oh so now you're ignoring me, I see how it is! :p
You don't use AIM do you? ;)

Mmm, tasty, tasty home-cooked bacon.

@drachenstern I think we had this discussion too. Yes, but only because of the people I couldn't convert to something more civilized. ;)
@PopularDemand You've apparently won the lunch war today.
Next time, next time..

6:02 PM
@TimStone hence the rest of that joke on IM ;)
@TimStone bah, he didn't tell us how he mangled that bacon before consuming it

@TimStone Sadly, the non-bacon portion of the meal is underseasoned.

I'm just having tacquitos, so he wins by default.
I evidently haven't made it out to the store yet so that I can make falafel...one day soon.
And of course, I wake up the laptop and the one person who I specifically did plan on talking to isn't online. Argh. Ah well.

This sandwich needs more gold leaf
2

@mootinator When is that ever not the case?

@PopularDemand when it's three layers of gold bricks?

6:13 PM
@drachenstern He just takes the lettuce off anyway, so it's OK.

@TimStone lol

@drachenstern Should you ever find yourself in a situation where you're dealing with a sandwich that contains more than three bricks worth of gold, I will happily take the excess off your hands. I'll pay the postage, even.

@PopularDemand I'd even go so far as to eat the sandwich, too. 'Cause I'm good like that.

@TimStone Truly, you are a devoted and faithful friend.

I wouldn't want a gold flake getting stuck in his throat, or something...my motivation might also lie in the fact that my tacquitos are still cooking and I'm starving, but we'll overlook that.

6:23 PM
Solaris != Linux.

solaris = *nix?

oy!

I do appreciate it guys, you are true friends to be sure ;)

A: jquery date formatting

PekkajQuery dateFormat is a separate plugin. You need to load that explicitly using a <script> tag.

The comments underneath. No further comment

6:33 PM
@Pekka What the hell o_o

lol, the comments are brilliant, as is the face of the conversation, when you consider everything

@Pekka -1 for suggesting using something other than jQuery

I was told jQuery could do everything. Is this not correct?
A <script> tag looks suspiciously not like jQuery.

@balpha I admit it! But I was forced to. And I deliberately linked to a resource that made it look more complex than using jQuery. That must count in my favour

@mootinator What if that <script> tag is added with jQuery? Does that count?

6:37 PM
Is there documentation somewhere on how SO/SE did the "you're logged in over here, you're now logged in on this site, too" kind of thing?

@TimStone Now we're talking!

\o/

@TimStone Related: -1 @HTML5 for not including <jquery> as a valid tag.

@gms8994 right here:
28
Q: How does SO's new auto-login feature work?

MarkSO and SU just told me I've been logged in. I'm guessing because I'm already logged into my Google account... but how does SO know that?

@gms8994 There's a brief overview in the blog post announcing it, but there might be something more verbose... Ah, @balpha to the resuce.

6:39 PM
// Method 1: append a <script> element manually
$('<script>', {'type': 'text/javascript', 'src': 'http://path.to/jquery-date.js' }).appendTo('body');

// Method 2: use an Ajax request
jQuery.getScript('http://path.to/jquery-date.js');

@balpha Thanks; I couldn't figure out the search terms to find it

@gms8994 It's a special type of cookie ;)

np

@drachenstern Ok. Because I'm interested in doing something similar on our network of sites

@PopularDemand First they took away my PUT and DELETE in form methods, now they've forgotten to include the <jquery> tag? Those savages.

6:40 PM
In fact... here's the source code for The Perfect Website: <jquery />. There, once we put that up on some powerful server, we can close every other site on the Internet and move on with our lives.
2

Did somebody say cookie? COO-KIE! OM Nom nom nom nom.

@PopularDemand I feel like IE won't render that correctly without the appropriate <!DOCTYPE awesome>

In HTML5, the <jquery> tag is deprecated. Use the <jQuery> tag instead.

@Pekka "I dunno... why should I trust you? You only have 102k rep. The users page tells me that the max is 277k, which puts you well below the 50% mark. Clearly, I can do better." -OP

@TimStone If that happened in a Douglas Adams book, that page would render an exact copy of zombo.com

6:44 PM
@PopularDemand Good point! I may need to call in Jon Skeet to dissuade the doubts.

@PopularDemand will it be backed with node.js running jQuery on the server?
@PopularDemand seriously? oh I thought this was lacking humor and was serious. My sarcasm filter is off.

SELECT * FROM Users WHERE Site = 'Stack Overflow' OR 'Meta Stack Overflow' AND Reputation ON 'Meta Stack Overflow' > Reputation ON 'Stack Overflow' AND DisplayName ON 'Stack Overflow' = DisplayName ON 'Meta Stack Overflow'

@drachenstern I do wonder if new users sometimes think that rep is actually just a ranking.

@PopularDemand it's not? :p

@Nyuszika7H returns me.

6:50 PM
@PopularDemand Oh nice but… see my edit!

@drachenstern Hm. My English is failing me, but I mean a mostly-unique system, so there's a #1, a #2, a #3....

@PopularDemand ah

I thought k was used in North America to denote negative numbers.

@mootinator I've never heard of such a system.

@PopularDemand No, I'm pretty sure @Pekka got his 102k rep from giving unhelpful answers like that one.

6:53 PM
By far the most common, in my experience, is -$value; in a fairly distant second place is ($value).

blink
I have never seen this '-' notation before.

@mootinator ehwhat?
I didn't think that hyphen was a valid javascript ID char
@mootinator not that I know of

Oy. /me turns his sarcasm back off.

When does the Deputy badge cycle run? Is it nightly?

blargh. stupid iphone

6:57 PM
@gms8994 join the club. Common sentiment.

@drachenstern I've gotten mine to a point where "restore" won't even restore

Q: Flag weight deputy badge bug?

middaparkaI've been on "flag weight 500 (max)" on main for a while (probably the best part of a day, if not longer), but I've not been awarded the Deputy badge. Am I missing something or is this a bug?

Maybe the fix hasn't kicked in yet?

it says "restoring iphone firmware", then it fails

@PopularDemand Possible. I'm not over zelous, but just curious (as I know some are instantaneous)

error code 1015. itunes fail

7:01 PM
Got it, nevermind

@ircmaxell Heh, welcome to the club. Your badge will arrive in the mail in 6-8 weeks.

lol
nice. I'm wearing my badge right now (well, the only physical badge the SO team has given me) :-D

is there a site that can show you your rep across all sites?

Yes
do you want every possible or just the ones where you have reasonable rep (over 200)

@ircmaxell ...what?

7:07 PM
@drachenstern both, if you know of them offhand ;)

I'm right now wearing the physical badge of honor that the SO team mailed to me... :-D

Q: StackFlair - Generate flair for your StackExchange associated accounts (please switch to stackflair.com)

Rebecca Chernoff Screenshots About There have been several requests on MSO for a way to get a combined flair similar to what is shown on Area51. I took a "I want it, I'll make it" approach. Thus became StackFlair. StackFlair generates a combined flair representing all of your associated StackExchange a...

technically the second link would be valid on any site in the SE network.

@drachenstern That fails for me when I actually try to generate the image
the first one, anyway

@gms8994 which? I need context as I've given you at least three links.

chat.SE also shows you your total combined reps, < 200 rep sites included (as a side note)

7:09 PM
You went to stackflair.com and it broke?
Please put at least everything you did so we can repro

try again whistles

yes; I filled in all the information

spinning...
worked
but it only gave me the one site
er, 2 sites

@gms8994 yes. I would direct questions to the author of the app. If only there were a way to know who that was ... If only I had linked you to her stackapps page for the app ...

7:10 PM
@ircmaxell A t-shirt?

@PopularDemand Yup

I'm having a really hard time getting motivated to generate test data today.

@drachenstern oh, I know who it was

Ok, that's good.

7:11 PM
@RebeccaChernoff any idea why I'm only getting 2 sites listed?

Are your accounts associated? If you go to your account tab on your user profile pages, do you see all your accounts?

hrm, they're not. I wonder why that is

It's messed up; meta should be associated but doesn't show up on SO or DBA

clear your associations and re-associate

did. Now SO shows all my associations, but I still only get 2 sites stackflair.com/Generate/options/theme=nimbus/…

7:17 PM
probably caching

Well, now stackflair is broken :)

I may or may not have broken it trying to fix the cache. q:

hehe

@PopularDemand I consider it a badge considering what I did to get it :-D

7:21 PM
also; anyone know what determines the "top answers" on stackexchange.com/users/9a3f8895aeb34c3ab694fa303d4885c5 ?

(refresh if it doesn't look different)

@ircmaxell Speaking of which, I need to keep working on mine.

hehehe

@RebeccaChernoff w00t! It looks good!

I hope you're not doing what I did to get mine :-P

7:21 PM
Yay rchern! Woot

@gms8994 Looks like just votes....
@ircmaxell Learning greasemonkey?

@PopularDemand interesting; if that's the case, then shouldn't my two answers on U.SE that have 10v each show up there?

@PopularDemand Nah, gaining admin access... :-P

@ircmaxell Won a Hacker badge, did you? Nice.
@gms8994 Ah. Yeah, probably.

Accidentally too... I didn't try, it just kinda happened...

7:25 PM
There's no valid HTML 4.01 Transitional site on the internet without the letter a present in the source code…

@Nyuszika7H well that's a terribly complicated way to ruin a good point :p

no?

Look:

@Nyuszika7H Well, since the word "Transitional" contains an a, and it's required in the DOCTYPE....

@PopularDemand Yep. And even in HTML5, you need a <head> tag, which contains an a.

7:28 PM
I guess I don't see what point you're trying to make.

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
	<head>
<!--       ^-----here -->

@Nyuszika7H No, I get this, but I don't understand why you brought it up.
Good effort on that pseudo-ASCII art, though.

@PopularDemand You can Google for a, can't you? (though it only finds a s in word boundaries)

@Nyuszika7H Yes, I can.
But, I mean, you could have just as easily said "there are no eagles that are not also birds." Or "Pi is always equal to 3.14159... (except in Indiana)."

I saw it as <html><body><p>something</p></body></html> is considered valid by every browser. Missing tags are just missing.
I thought he wanted to go for requiring <a links

7:35 PM
@PopularDemand sadly, that bill is almost the only thing anyone knows my state for :(

@gms8994 nonsense. You're filler to the east of Illinois! Without you Illinois would stretch all the way to Ohio and that would be awkward

Richard aka cyberkiwiFrom http://chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/transcript/message/558103#558103 SE: http://stackexchange.com/users/9a3f8895-aeb3-4c3a-b694-fa303d4885c5?tab=accounts Unix: http://unix.stackexchange.com/users/4565/gms8994 There are 2 10-v questions on Unix.SE that do not feature in the stackexchange.com...

@Nyuszika7H you should've looked for a || e

@gms8994 Unfortunately, you are wrong; I also associate Michael Mrozek with your state.

7:37 PM
since that only returns things that are in the visible text

@PopularDemand his website is "interesting". But I've no idea where in indiana he's from

@gms8994 Just looks like a blank page, to me.

@PopularDemand exactly

@PopularDemand There's what appears to be some PHP fail hidden in the source, but even that is boring.

ok people, I need food. I'm going to pretend to leave. We'll see if it works. If it don't, call me Moshe ;) :p

7:42 PM
Hah :P

@TimStone I did try using that as a parameter, but no dice.

Q: Why do some numbers show up in my favorite tags section?

Jamie ForrestI've added a handful of favorite tags and some inexplicable integer tags show up alongside the tags I entered. Although the screenshot below doesn't show it, sometimes an integer plus the name of a tag I've entered shows up, like "457-ruby." I delete these tags and then they show up again. See th...

I just can't come up with a good reason for this

The funny thing is that article came from an email alert for "Java OR C++ OR Python." :)
Dang it, @balpha you and your links. ;)

@balpha Hmm, that's weird. I've never seen that happen.
He killed her! :O

8:34 PM
@balpha Nooooooooooooooooooooooo!

I just had to share this - legault.perso.sfr.fr/STS-133.html - a photo of an astronaut taken from the ground

Oh wow :o

Nice.

wow

@ChrisF I wonder how it was done.

8:42 PM
@PopularDemand I don't know for sure. I would imagine very long lens would be involved somewhere. I found it via the Bad Astronomer website which has publicised this guy's work in the past so there might be more info there.

Prob someone has an optical telescope setup, and was able to view it on a clear night...

@balpha You see what happens when you invent a "Copy [site] Profile To Related Accounts" button? You see?

unrelated to anything said here thus far: I like changedetection.com. It's a useful service

@balpha Polly was having problems with OpenID:
1
Q: Unable to log in with your OpenID provider: no OpenID identifier was provided.

Adam DavisI'm getting the following error when I attempt to log in using my OpenID provider: Unable to log in with your OpenID provider: no OpenID identifier was provided. I run an old PHP OpenID script which I know hasn't changed recently. Has Stack Overflow changed their implementation, and...

Fair enough. Still, I'd expect an immediate reset to Pollyana on MSO :)

9:18 PM
@ChrisF Oh, I was too. I wish I could read that question right now >.<

> Meta Stack Overflow is currently offline for maintenance

@balpha Out of curiosity, were the tags stored in the database like that, or did it seem to be some sort of obscure view/client-side issue? (or you have no idea?)

GEORGE!!!!!!!

Q: task scheduling on windows

kiteHello, I don't really know if my asking fits on this site, but I really need a fast answer since my alarm clock just broke. I need to know how to launch a music with windows media player / Itunes with the windows task scheduler. I already know how to create a task, and how to trigger it at a g...

@PopularDemand Huh.

9:20 PM
@TimStone they somehow endet up in the database like that -- it's probably still a client side issue. the code that saves your favorite tags to the server just takes $("#interestingTags").text() and sends that; so some weird extension for example adding content all over the DOM, that's one reason I can imagine

@balpha Ah, when you add or remove, does it do them all at once?

Is meta still down?

yes
(to both of you)

Makes more sense.

the guys are switching network equipment on the server that runs meta, so it could be another 10-15 minutes

9:23 PM
What am I supposed to do? Work?

moderate on U&L, of course!

And with the other 14.5 minutes?

@balpha Please, like anyone visits that site.

@MichaelMrozek create some trouble on U&L, then moderate yourself

Excellent. We're getting a new mod sometime today; I want him to show up and see 99 flags in the toolbar
"Who is this Michael Mrozek psychopath, and why isn't suspending him working?"

9:27 PM
ie6countdown.com still @ 12%

has 99 problems but a canine of the female persuasion would not appear to be one.

@mootinator omg have I got a demotivational for you
let me find it for you so you don't devolve yet
verydemotivational.memebase.com/2010/09/25/… <-- now you can go lose the rest of your day clicking related links
NSFW but hilarious anyways. I warned you, and didn't make you click the link did I?

That's okay, the effort I put into generating test data has already managed to give me a headache.

So now you should go read those two links

actually, I don't think the first demotivator is going very far with his flat front tires

9:33 PM
@drachenstern That didn't help LessPop much yesterday

@badpssockpuppet did he get a ban?

@drachenstern A manual one too

@balpha Since they're sequential, my best guess is that for some reason they're the number of the link element on the page (my favourite tags are around $('a').eq(570), so different tags -> question set with more tags / question -> .eq(6xx-ish)) and they have some bizarre extension, like vimperator

Did he give just such a warning and tell people not to click it?
So you want I should remove it?

it'

9:34 PM
@drachenstern I don't want anything, I'm fine with it

it's not even that unsafe

Apparently I can't delete it
I tried

It's okay really

@gms8994 true, but I don't take chances with other peoples SFW

9:34 PM
I think there was some kind of an overreaction yesterday ;)

@TimStone yeah that didn't make any sense to me either

meta is back, btw

@balpha Psh. I found out about that, like, three whole seconds ago.

Hrm... I wonder how difficult it would be to create auto-login for our sites...
more importantly, I wonder if our VPs would be OK with it
for a tech company, they're scared of doing anything new

it wouldn't be difficult at all.
check localstorage on browsers that support it and see if an attribute already exists for your domain
you have to be all on the same domain tho
SINCE WHEN DOES META.STACKEXCHANGE.COM GOTO META.STACKOVERFLOW.COM?
sorry, I'm a little frightened, I went to go look something up on the old meta which I thought was at that address
now I'm worried my brain is broken

A: Where's meta.stackexchange.com?

Jeff AtwoodIt was decided that the number of Stack Exchange 1.0 sites has dwindled far enough now that we can shut down the old meta.stackexchange.com and redirect to here, meta.stackoverflow.com. It is more correct for the network meta to be called "Meta Stack Exchange" anyway, but we aren't quite there y...

it breaks google
rather, google still has old caches

so with the new name, does that mean the url will now be careers.stackexchange.com?

So where's the 1.0 site list now? Somebody's asking about it in <droll voice> the other tavern</droll>
@gms8994 probably not, as that will likely be reserved for an actual site
but it might

For @Jin, captioned "Healthy food at its best":

@drachenstern There are 2 validation errors preventing me from understanding this message. (not really)

9:47 PM
Nice

@drachenstern You're in the other tavern.

@PopularDemand I forgot to assign a value to my attribute didn't I? That happens.
@mootinator I always lurk
So apparently the answer to "is there still a place to access the old posts from meta.se" is "no"? Does that sound right to everyone here?

Are they in the data dump?

SEDE?
er, data.se?
it's not listed as a site on that page

10:06 PM
@drachenstern Unfortunately, yes.

@PopularDemand thanks for the confirmation

10:38 PM
Perhaps I've gone crazy, but how do you invite a user to a room?
I thought it used to be in the menu when you click on their gravatar in the user list, but it's not anymore

@MichaelMrozek I'm still seeing it for you.
Are you currently in the other room?

Yes; I don't even see an "invite" option in the list

Looks like I can only invite you to rooms I'm in at the moment.

@PopularDemand that sounds like a

@MichaelMrozek Private room? Or one to which the target user is banned?
balpha, attempting to limit your social contact with humans?

10:42 PM
@PopularDemand I'm saying I don't even get the option. I haven't gotten to the choosing a room step yet, there's no invite option at all

@MichaelMrozek did you goto their user page?

@PopularDemand Oh, I see -- if the only other room I'm in is a private room, it just hides the option?

@MichaelMrozek That was what I thought initially.

That appears to be the case; I didn't think of that
I can't invite anyone in here because I'm only in one meta chat room, and I can't invite anyone in the Unix room because the only other SE chat room I'm in is private
Ok, thanks

Good work, @balpha!

10:50 PM
I'm waiting on all the chatrooms to be migrated to one server.
It's gonna be fun to see the numbers all jump by roughly 2 million id points on existing messages.

@drachenstern You have an interesting definition of "fun."

Ok, it will be amusing to see the numbers jump ...
@adam <-- does this summon the pollyanna?
When is the last time Adam was here?

@drachenstern February 22nd, 2011.

@PopularDemand posh, you and your accurate answers.

@drachenstern Tell that to the guy whose SO question I just answered.

A: Subtracting internal Strings within external String in Java

Lord TorgamusBased on your sample code, it might be easier to keep track of which bits of the string the user doesn't want, and generate removeIng based on that. Here's some pseudocode. I sacrificed optimization in favor of clarity: ArrayList<String> components; // what used to be called pH1 is accesse...

that one

@drachenstern Yep.

@PopularDemand my face is numb, must I facepalm?

I wonder if the situation I accounted for is a real concern for him.

> We're learning that in class this next week.

@drachenstern What'd I do?
@drachenstern Oh, that comment is new to me.

10:57 PM
does that comment put things back in perspective?

@drachenstern I didn't realize my perspective was off, but... I guess?

@PopularDemand I meant :558426

@drachenstern Oh. I guess so.
Well, maybe not, the teacher could assume that they wouldn't do anything that complicated, and give some wacky sample data.

there are now 3 elements in the string
I now want to delete 3 (what used to be 4)
deleted[3] is already true

I didn't see it working that way. I thought there were a set number of string pieces that he was either going to include or not include.
Probably not worth wasting any more neuron time on that question, though.

11:02 PM
oh, cos the input string[] never gets altered ... er, yeah, I knew that ... >.>

You can't add to Java arrays like that, @drachenstern.
They're weird holdovers from C++.

seriously? wtf?
also, you did.
I literally just copied your code, so I guess that's why I'm confused.
and anyways I would do it like string[] arr = new[]{ph1,ph2,ph3}; in C# (IIRC)

@drachenstern Yeah, I forgot to change that from when it was an ArrayList. But I'm covered by the "this is just pseudocode" clause.

@PopularDemand cheater :p

Someday, compilers will understand // This is pseudocode; I'm sure you know what to do.

11:11 PM
@PopularDemand Part of me wants that, but another part is terrified

11:59 PM
Hey can I get someone to repro the chatfeedback post about inviting a user to a room? can only invite one room per refresh?
