damnit I forgot to make sure my morning job was properly time-aligned ... run little browser, run!
Like I'm not the author of the job and can't run it as I wish
@Nyuszika7H what's the D for?

@drachenstern As Far As I Don't Know

I was internally referencing a marathon joke telling session by my uncle's father where everytime anyone failed to laugh he explained it in great detail until someone offered him at least a "heh" at which point he would move on to the next terrible joke.

Thought that's what you meant. I would leave it off.
@mootinator lmao

@TimPost: @drachenstern: @mootinator: I had a Set a Bounty for a Question, Unfortunate it ended 21 minutes ago, can i award that bounty now

If the bounty already past the time that it says on the question (expired) then no.
what question?

3:03 PM
1/2 of it gets automatically awarded to the highest scoring new answer since the bounty started (over 2), if there is one, otherwise it just goes away.

I got this message This question had a bounty worth +50 reputation from Sankar Ganesh that ended 26
mins ago.

@SankarGanesh You snooze, you lose unfortunately

Then I think it's too late.

Yeah, sorry @SankarGanesh, too late

@TimPost oh, I missed it for Honoring the Good Answer, OOps i missed it ,

3:06 PM
While it does have a bounty system, Stack Exchange is very careful to not treat rep like currency

@TimPost I forgot on that day to congratulate you

@SankarGanesh Maybe. The bounty script only runs once every hour or so. You might get lucky.

@SankarGanesh Quite alright. I was amazed when I checked. Actually I was amazed that I got through the primary considering my running mates.

@TimPost: and @PopularDemand: and @mootinator: and @drachenstern: i m Leaving , Carry on Guys, See you Later, Bye , Take Care friends

@SankarGanesh Take care

3:10 PM
@SankarGanesh Bye.

> @tobias there is a tiny grace period but it's simply based on the odds of when your bounty ends versus when the hourly task runs – Jeff Atwood♦ Oct 19 '10 at 13:45
Argh.

Yeah but if the button isn't there when you show up you're screwed

@drachenstern I don't know if he actually checked the question or not. He might have just looked at the clock.

No he quoted the page

Yeah, I've awarded a bounty after seeing a similar message.
You have to see if the award buttons are there, not the timing text.

3:15 PM
I asked what question but was promptly ignored, so didn't pursue it. I tried tracing his account but it was nonobvious

guys...rut roh

@RebeccaChernoff not good!

@RebeccaChernoff NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I wanted my UniDollar

@RebeccaChernoff I'm sure it'll be replenished tomorrow.

>GASP< Where'd our cash go? http://twitpic.com/47t897
(;

3:18 PM
There couldn't have been more than $10k in there.

@RebeccaChernoff my phantom flag is gone today!

@RebeccaChernoff I'm curious why SOIS would worry about having cash in their candy area. I would rather they had more candy there (some twizzlers should fit in that bottle nicely)

@drachenstern why do you think the cash is gone? Used to buy more candy!

@drachenstern maybe it was edible paper candy?

@TheOutOfStarsException More like that fancy ice cream where the "sprinkles" are flakes of 24k gold.

3:23 PM
Hrump, I just got unceremoniously logged out of SO

@PopularDemand the Goldschläger of ice cream? :-)

@PopularDemand nom nom solid gold ... I live with the chipped teeth

Mmmmm expensive heavy metal poisoning.

Mea culpa, it's merely cheapo twenty-three karat gold. A thousand bucks, five years ago.

There's way too much activity in that one sundae glass. It needs at most four features, not over 9000

3:29 PM
Yeah, that sundae needs to be split up and made into at least three more specialized mid-market sundaes.

@mootinator Pish posh. As if it weren't already poor people food. Did you not see where I pointed out that it's merely 23k gold, not true 24k?

@PopularDemand Indeed.

@mootinator Seriously though, I'm a bit incredulous that Forbes even has a list of the most expensive desserts. Let alone that this sundae no longer qualifies.

If it isn't served in a brand new lamborghini, why even bother?
That would be a good car ad: "Your choice of $1000 cash back or an ice cream sundae."

If you're buying a Lamborghini, getting cash back is not at the top of your priority list.
@PopularDemand what? link!
seriously people, how do we not know that is a requirement by now?

3:34 PM
@drachenstern A dead link on the sundae's Wikipedia page (yes, it has its own).
My new business plan: go to my bank and get a $1.5m loan for this, the most expensive the list.

To the Forbes list of most expensive desserts. I figured you had it open already

Then eat the ring and sue Arnaud's for not providing a safety warning.
@drachenstern No, I meant that the list is not accessible anymore.

Ah see, these guys know how to do it:

Maybe it is if you have a subscription to Forbes 's online archives or something.

> “Diners are bored,” says Mitchell Davis, spokesman for the James Beard Foundation. “They’re looking for new and absurd ways to tantalize themselves.”

3:36 PM
> But the strawberries found at Arnaud’s restaurant in New Orleans French Quarter is not just some sliced fruit. The difference lies in the topping – a one-of-a-kind 4.7-carat pink diamond ring once belonging to the British financier Sir Ernest Cassel. To make it worth the $1.4 million, the strawberries are served with a $24,850 Charles X crystal liquor.

I am not bored by food. I love a good steak and a nice stout.

@drachenstern By the way, I'll have you know that one of my old e-mail addresses was CitationNeeded@(domain.com).

I do get the impression nobody has ever bought the 1.4 million dollar dessert.

@mootinator Look, if you're going to drink port, don't drink that cheap swill Charles X ... gosh
@PopularDemand I had a feeling.

Unless they happen to have a lot of identical one of a kind rings.

3:38 PM
read the second one
it's about 2/5 of the way down the scrollbar

Oh, the sundae didn't get dropped because of price. "The restaurant was closed temporarily by the health department late last year."

I just read that
what a shame. Serving gold leaf on your dishes. Doesn't that get you a buy?

Q: Please raise or remove CW limits on Code Golf SE site

S.MarkPlease kindly raise or remove CW limits on Code Golf SE site Raise or Remove CW Conversion because of too many edits Raise or Remove CW Conversion because of too many answers Please allow current moderators of Code Golf SE to revert CW back to normal.

Makes sense.

I wish the Code Golf posters weren't so focused on character counts
I'm more interested in reading interesting solutions than trying to parse minified code

There, figure out what I did wrong. lol.

@TehShrike you ... miss the point of codegolf yes?
2
codebowling maybe more what you're looking for.
or just code puzzles
You do know that it's called Golf right @TehShrike ?

Yeah, everyone's trying for the lowest number of characters, and that's a fine puzzle

And in Golf the goal is to get to the hole on each part of the course in the fewest number of strokes... this translates into fewest number of characters.

4:00 PM
It just gets old for me pretty quick. I'd rather read interesting solutions at some point.

If you want to see it in non-golf, make the same question non-golf.
@TehShrike that's what SO is for.
this site fills a niche.

@drachenstern Well the site is suppose to be about puzzle too, not only code golf

@HoLyVieR yes, but each question should be one type of question.
one question should not be both golf and puzzle

Better yet: Why does this line not do what I expect it to:

4:01 PM
if you want it puzzle, repost it and ask for code solutions.

(byte)Math.Round(Math.Sin(position * 2 * Math.PI) + 1 * 127);

If the community prefers the golf-type questions, that's fine. Just not my cup of tea, really

@kevin are you bi-winning?
@mootinator what language?
@TehShrike no, you misunderstand
am I talking to a wall here?

8-| I hope not

C#, but it's a math issue.

4:02 PM
yes, but I wanted to make sure I looked at the right libraries

Huh, was just talking about this.

I like your "code bowling" phrase though :-D

CGSE is absolutely for both code golf and other programming puzzles/challenges.

@RebeccaChernoff yes, but see :557561

And I've seen people post asking for interesting code over short answers

4:03 PM
@mootinator what's the 2 doing in there? make it 2.0 and see what it does

Just a lot less often than golf-questions

@TehShrike because they post asking for just that
Until you ask, nobody will do that.

... yes @drachenstern, I realize this, I'm just saying, most of the community seems to prefer asking for the short answers.
And so, I only visit sporadically.
I visit it to browse, not to ask any particular question.

@drachenstern The waveform is correct, the amplitude is just wrong. the +1 * 127 part isn't making it fill the range of a uint8 as I expected, or something.

@mootinator for the sake of clarity do double angle = position /*better be double here*/ * 2.0 * Math.PI; (byte)Math.Round(Math.Sin(angle) + 1 * 127);
@mootinator so why are you adding 127?

4:05 PM
@TehShrike, it is a bit of a chicken vs egg kind of thing. There aren't many questions to answer because there aren't many people asking those types of questions...because there aren't....etc

@RebeccaChernoff true enough, I suppose

@TehShrike I vote you are doing it wrong. I am only one person.

eyeroll

If you want more out of the community you must put more into the community

@drachenstern you think I should start asking code bowling questions, in order to influence the site?

4:06 PM
@TehShrike, you're not the only person that has mentioned wanting more non-code-golf, but that push has to come from y'all.

@mootinator are you wanting to mod it out of 127?
@TehShrike YES
Kevin, try grouping things in parens to clarify. I'm not entirely sure what you're wanting.

@drachenstern oh sonofa, you got it, I'm just missing brackets.

but I know that if position isn't double and that 2 isn't double, you're asking for trouble
@mootinator I know. I'm like Flo.

Q: Record TV via HDMI

FranciscHello! Is that possible? If so, can you recommend a way for a Windows 7 user to record TV via HDMI to Laptop? Thank you.

Are the suggested edit rules different for questions and answers. I can edit the answers, but not the question

4:11 PM
@MichaelMrozek they ... shouldn't be ... what site?

@drachenstern SU; the post PopularDemand just linked

Oh, he had an edit on the question already, so it was blocking further edits

hmm, how do I post that expanded-link to the question?

@TehShrike The link has to be in its own message

Q: Code Bowling on "Hello World"?

Jonathan SampsonContrary to the popular code-golf challenges which demonstrate the genius of many regulars here, I'd like to see that genius illustrated in an antithetical fashion. Where do I quickly find Wil?

@drachenstern On SU.

@PopularDemand that's totally against the DMCA so they wouldn't really advise you to do it.
@PopularDemand on the SU chat?

@drachenstern No, main site. He seems to be commenting actively today.
Based on those questions which I've opened, at any rate.

No Root Access :p
I swear I can type today
surely I don't plan on writing code later today?

I e-mailed my alma mater yesterday asking them to send me some documentation. The response I just got:
> Michael- the document you attached cannot be opened by my computer.:( can you come up with another plan, fax possibly?
The attachment she's referring to is my e-mail signature :(

well then, fax her your email signature
2

@MichaelMrozek They're just stalling for time while they try to figure out how to tell you that they've destroyed the docs you want and have disavowed any connection to you.

4:28 PM
@balpha If I didn't need this person's help there are a whole host of amusing and unhelpful responses I'd consider

What format is your e-mail signature in, exactly?

@mootinator probably jpg

4:44 PM
@mootinator It's a plain text PGP attachment

Ah.

@MichaelMrozek well there's the problem of course ;)

What is the purpose of the Unicorns chatroom? Is it merely "this is just another room... except Joel's here at the moment"?

Q&A about Q&A?

@mootinator Ah, like MSO. Once it splits into MSO and MSE, MSE should immediately be renamed "Stack Exchange SE."

I think we should discuss the merits of using Hungarian notation in stead of smilies.

@mootinator Hungarian notation?

_hpyslgtlysrcastic Hello friends!
_shkd OMG!

I just got stuck for 20 minutes in the same elevator car, at the same floor, on the same day of the week every week this month.

4:58 PM
Hungarian notation is an identifier naming convention in computer programming, in which the name of a variable or function indicates its type or intended use. There are two types of Hungarian notation: Systems Hungarian notation and Apps Hungarian notation. Hungarian notation was designed to be language-independent, and found its first major use with the BCPL programming language. Because BCPL has no data types other than the machine word, nothing in the language itself helps a programmer remember variables' types. Hungarian notation aims to remedy this by providing the programmer with e...

Otis elevators have strange bugs

@TimPost Then it must be a feature, not a bug.
Was it for religious reasons?
I suppose 20 minutes would be a bit excessive even for that....

@PopularDemand Perhaps to encourage adopting some religion

lol, perhaps

Odd, after 20 minutes, everything goes dark for a second and the elevator goes to the ground floor

5:00 PM
@TimPost omg, I think ours here might be Otis too :\

but
TWENTY MINUTES??
They should totally drop that and use epoll()

@drachenstern I wasn't joking; there really are Shabbat elevators.

jzd
@TimPost maybe you should take the stairs

@jzd I'm on a rather high floor

Soo, it's probably just me, but.

jzd
5:02 PM
Even with breaks I bet you can do it in less than 20 minutes.

(20 floors here)

Complaining your sites aren't attracting experts because they're full of n00b questions while simultaneously assuming they'll come eventually doesn't make sense to me.

@jzd I really don't like stairs, especially going down, I'm having some recent problems with my vision and the stairwells are dimly lit

Either something is helping or it isn't.

5:05 PM
I wish someone could turn the text "Stack Exchange" into a running unicorn.
5

jzd
@TimPost, well maybe just use a different elevator. Even if you have to wait. I used to work a company that had one elevator that would act really strange. (Open half way, stop half way and do nothing for a few seconds, etc.)

@Nyuszika7H I don't understand what you're asking me over there
This site is not that site. Look at the domain names.

OMG PONIES

@TimPost a moment :)

@jzd the selection process is also fubar. It's quite happy to send the left elevator eleven floors UP when the one on the right is just a floor above me

5:10 PM
Why do so many people insist on putting a space between words and question marks? Is this actually considered correct practice in some parts of the world, and I'm just being an obnoxious American?

@TimPost that's nice. Ours we press the up button in the lobby and the light goes off and we get no cars.

@TimPost Well, that's sometimes legit; it could be in use by someone who's going up.

Press the down button and a car shows up (there's one LL)

@PopularDemand Some people just have trouble getting their spaces where they should be, I think

5:10 PM
@mootinator I think you mean: OMG PWNIEZZZZ

Come to think of it, that's a valid English SE question.

Indeed

@PopularDemand I don't know? Space never predicates punctuation unless you are doing something clever.

It's an unicorn, though it's not running…

@Nyuszika7H That's pretty good for being thrown together in 2 minutes.

5:11 PM
That's what I was thinking too

@Nyuszika7H No, I meant just the words "stack exchange." For instance, the horn coming out of the last 'E' and the letter A gaining legs with holves

@TimPost ah

@TimPost hooves

While 'S' gained a tail
@drachenstern noted, thanks :)

What we need is an artist, not a programmer. I hear Google hired several.

5:13 PM
Although if one had the unicorn in the other direction, the last E could be unicorn rainbow poop.

@drachenstern We have one. One moment .. @Jin WAKE UP

Artist or graphic designer?
I thought he was the latter
@mootinator or it could come from the bottom of the S?

There's a difference?

I've already put way too much effort into that train of thought and will promptly stop
So how about this weather?

5:14 PM
Remind me not to go on any artist or graphic designer SE lest I be shunned for not knowing that.
@drachenstern Bwahahaha.

@mootinator yes.

@mootinator At no time did feces inspire this idea, despite the producing creature.
@mootinator and everyone knows unicorns don't crap. Unicorns just spread love and if you complain about the business end that you received you get impaled.

Unicorns crap rainbows. I've seen it!

D'oh. Asked a dupe.

Q: A space before a question or an exclamation mark. Can it be correct?

remIn written English (mainly online) I often come across sentences ending with a question or an exclamation mark with a space before it. Is it always just an error or a typo? Or there are cases when it is a correct English, for example after closing parentheses or some other punctuation marks?

5:24 PM
En Francais ?
I don't recall ever learning that :/

I don't either..
Ah, because it's only a French-French thing, not a French-Canadian thing...apparently.

Though we learn Parisian in school in Saskatchewan for some reason unknown to me.
Like the education board met and decided to teach the dialect least likely to be of use to any of us :P

That's just confusing :P

Nah, it's like teaching us Southerners to speak English, as tho they could be considered the same thing. I'm honestly surprised anyone in here understands a word I say.

@mootinator Bah. You're not learning French for everyday utility. You're learning French so you can seem <del>snotty</del>classy at cocktail parties.

5:33 PM
@drachenstern Oh, we just play along, we didn't want to hurt your feelings.

@TimStone thanks, I appreciate that ;)
I need a coke, I'll be right back. (and for the uninitiated amongst you, that means I want a Dr. Pepper ~ I leave you to google to discover why)

Hah.

@drachenstern Please. I refer you to my old desktop background.

@PopularDemand I've seen it I imagine.

5:35 PM
Funny people and their predilections for using "soda" or "pop" or heaven forbid "soda-pop"

@PopularDemand Nonsense, all Canadians who live outside Quebec learn French in case Quebec revolts, that way they can intercept their communications.

As though most people in this country have ever drank a soda-water

In that case I'm going to go have some Kraft Dinner and Smarties.

@TimStone he meant French-French vs French-Canadian-French
@mootinator I don't know what the first part means but I do like those little round candies that have a specific name. (vis-a-vis coke vs Coca Cola)

Anyone willing to test the performance of one of my sites under IE?

5:37 PM
@PopularDemand Also, your lack of addict proper chat format knowledge disappoints me.

Some users have complained of slowness/crashing under IE.

@Nyuszika7H FYI that's a year old.

@PopularDemand FYI stands for Found Your Insulin? :P is just kidding

@PopularDemand but he was only 11 then! Imagine what he didn't know!

Is there an MSO post about chat Markdown?

@mootinator no seriously, do you guys call that "Kraft Dinner" up there? We just call it mac&chz (granted there's a very bad type and a very good type and that's the very bad type pictured there)

5:41 PM
@PopularDemand That particular syntax isn't official because it's just a gift from balpha....A gift which he'll take away if people abuse it. :O

@balpha, the Markdown section of the chat FAQ is outdated
Oh.

nods

I never used that word :)

I shall refer you to the fourth verse of our national anthem:

@PopularDemand yes, shall we revise it on MSO?

5:44 PM
@mootinator wow. I never noticed.

Jin
did someone Bat Signal me?

@mootinator I've always wondered what currency the $1,000,000 was in. I can only assume that it depends on the exchange rate.

@Jin indeed. they wanted to know if you were an artist or a graphic designer

@mootinator Ah, good, I haven't had a BNL fix in a while.

I also harassed you last night over certain front page indiscretions, but..

5:46 PM
@drachenstern Jin is an ar-teest. He cannot be confined by strict labels or boxes!

Jin
@drachenstern i'm a web designer

Oh what the hell Chrome.

Jin
@PopularDemand true. i poop outside of the box
@TimStone are you referring to the voting box bgcolor removal?

@Jin yeah, so others were like "what's the diff"

web designer professional bacon eater

5:47 PM
I wasn't sure if you were strictly web designer
I promise I can type

Jin
@drachenstern good question... I'll be on Herding Code postcast tonight, to talk to programmers about dev. vs designers.

@Jin Indeed. Originally I was mentioning that it was white, but I've commented on your answer to that Meta question now too along different lines.
@Jin :o

@RebeccaChernoff I wonder if he's a professional bacon cooker too. 'Cause I'd be down with someone cooking us all bacon.

Jin
@TimStone white was a mistake. i forgot about the interesting highlight bgcolor. so i set it to transparent.

5:49 PM
@TimStone Mmm, I made pasta with carbonara sauce for lunch. Time to eat.

Jin
but as for the voting box on the homepage and question listing pages, i don't use bgcolors. in fact, i don't do that for Beta and Final SE site designs.

@Jin just like on hanselminutes? :)
great to hear though; I love herdingcode

Jin
@balpha well not really. for one, i'll have a headset this time. last time i called in with my land phone, it was horrible.
@balpha also Nathan Bowers will be on the show too. so 30mins of the show probably will be on Apple worshipping, MS bashing..

lol

@Jin The answer counts aren't hideously contrasty on other sites though. AskUbuntu is close, but the background colour there isn't white anyway so that's OK.
Anyway, as I mentioned in the comment, I'll wait until the fix is pushed to see if I can live with it.

Jin
5:52 PM
@TimStone hehe. this is why i'll tweak SO's UI incrementally an subtly. i think it's just a matter of being so used to the current look.
i remember views box used to have a bgcolor too.

@Jin will you give us a preview of your vision over there?
Also, did anything get manifested on making that one bar standard on all the sites for notifications et al?

Anyone here have IE9 installed that would be willing to test something real quick?

Jin
@drachenstern what bar?

@TehShrike Give us a link.

the one that's at the top of every single SE2.0 site

5:53 PM
@drachenstern My confusion had more to do with my opinion that 'graphics designer' is a proper subset of 'artist'.

@Jin is this from the twitter back and forth...was it mockups maybe?

it has the supermulticollider
and my username, the searchbox
move it out of the header div
give it a transparent background so it themes

@Jin Well, right now it kind of bothers my eyes. It's possible that it's just because of the favourite question issue though, so I'll trust your judgment (as I have reason to)... for now :P

I'm curious how this site responds under IE9: rbnreleases.com

Jin
@drachenstern i think it's too late now to move. not all sites have a background colored top bar though.

5:54 PM
Interacting with the table is fairly sluggish in IE8
It's pretty snappy under Chrome/FF3

@Jin yes, hence the problem with that add-on I was working on.
hence my stalling on it and meditating on it in my downtime

Jin
@drachenstern can't you hack it with that custom-header div?

I'm considering changing my plugin and just moving it around on the page and setting the colors for consistency on my own.
@Jin yeah, but I wanted to keep your theming as much as I could

@TehShrike I can't notice a difference between Chrome 11 and IE9 here.

@drachenstern that's what I'm having issues with
