seriously, we're over a year down the track, and theres no way to flag a user for being a pain yet?

for now you can report evil here, yeah there is no way =[

@KentFredric If you flag one of his posts for mod attention and say that the user is a pain, it does essentially the same thing

@Reno I noticed that... but ... there was only a user with less rep than me in there... not sure what they can do that I cant =P

@KentFredric diamond mods are supposed to walk by the regulator HQ
once in a while
There is @MarcGravell here, he can sort this out for you

what did I do?
(reads back)

10:08 AM
@MarcGravell Lotsa spam on SO right now
The flagged post list is filling up

let me look...

About 3 spammers going at it. I don't see the point in editors trying to hide it by editing the spam out though...it just hides the problem in an equally annoying way

@KentFredric Neither do I, but if we're all diligently flagging away they should be gone soon

has burnt all his flags for today so is sacrificing with downvotes

@KentFredric You'll get the reps back when the posts are deleted

10:11 AM
Oh? It does that now? Cool.

You need a recalc though

I've stomped a few - did I miss any in particular?

One of them isn't so bad, their answers look not-100% spam because of the pages they've but it on ... but... its the same answer on all the pages its been put on, Q) something needing a CMS/Cart of sort A) answer involving something he's involved with
@MarcGravell You've killed all the ones I've seen, thanks.

"i deleted my question...bcoz i got ans" - hmm, somebody really doesn't "get it"

10:17 AM
oh, and I recognise them - it is the one who keeps calling people "dear"

haha i come across a lot of them which stalking android questions

I frickin' hate that

@YiJiang IS there a way to force a recalc? I'm out of the game too much >_>

@KentFredric Check the /reputation page
At the bottom, there's a recalc button

finally finds it

10:22 AM
@MarcGravell boot him, dear
For at least half a year

@MarcGravell How 'bout "ducky"? Is that better? :)
@YiJiang, feature idea - add a count of nominees

@KentFredric i cant find it >_________<

don't enrage someone with a "destroy" button

considers greeting @MarcGravell with 'honey' instead

(saves me scrolling down to see if there's anyone new)

10:24 AM
lol

@Benjol There's already one

@YiJiang, feature suggestion, <blink> so I notice it :)

ah thanks :D

@YiJiang I once knew a couple who called each other "Boo" and "Snugs" :)

10:25 AM
( I thought @YiJiang was meaning "The reputation page on your profile" for starters and was very confused )

is this discussion stemming out of Vday?
haha

status-declined
Here, have some FHC instead

@YiJiang lol, it's because it's 3, my brain skimmed over it as being the same as the other number ;)

^ Wow...

@YiJiang .....

10:28 AM
wow @YiJiang

@YiJiang The last one at least is written in English

what site? SO?

@studiohack Yeah, I saw it in the suggested edits queue (someone suggested an edit swapping out the spam link to a YouTube video)
Strange that edits on posts that have been deleted still exists in the queue
@Reno You know, that suggestion to use GMail color scheme is excellent

lol. Somebody else beat me to searching for "Protemac"

A: Tool to monitor HTTP, TCP, etc. Web Service traffic

JackWhat about Mac,you can try to use ProteMac Meter.It’s prog record of your network and display your internet traffic.It’s must be helpful to your.It’s really good prog.

its the users only post though, so shrug

@YiJiang yeah that's crazy...some people on SU have tried to edit weird stuff into other people's answers...

10:32 AM
and its fine, within that context ( I think )

A: open source photo album software?

jenniferPhraseanet is Open Source now, the version 3.1 has just been released. It's a professional application for Windows/Mac/Linux. You can try it (ask a demo access on www.alchemy.fr) or download it for free here: http://www.phraseanet.com/en/download/

more spam, it would appear.
I can't tell what phraseanet does ... it might still be relevant

A: Bandwidth calculation (Internet data transfer)

Duglas2you can monitor your bandwidth using ProteMac Meter.It;s really nice prog)try

12 minutes ago....

@KentFredric That answers your question about flagging users, they just keep recreating new ones anyway :)

well, yeah, I guess.
It needs something more draconian.

@KentFredric, flagged anyway.

Like Knife-over-IP

@KentFredric, they do do IP blocks sometimes
Wow, where has Iceland been? :)

Q: Suggested edits should not lock the ability for others to edit.

Ólafur WaageI found a suggested edit that was OK but not that great, I wanted to fix the question myself since it was a quick and easy thing to do. But I could not do that. If I click edit, it brings up the suggested edit window and tells me to vote on it. I tried to reject it but then it just brings it up a...

11:03 AM
Should have bolded my smiley there...

11:46 AM
Hi! :)
@Benjol Wow, where has Iceland been? :)

@Nyuszika7H, no, on my comment on the question.

Iceland has been hiding in a cave, because its un american.

1 hour later…
1:08 PM
@benjol it's cool to list either way, I didn't have any notifications last night so couldn't exactly test that part, figured it might break too. @YiJiang someone is set on it and there's mire than one style line, cos that's all I thought it was too. Then I got frustrated :p ;)

I cannot connect to my music server. This pisses me off to no end. RAWR

@MarcGravell Why do I still see the 'low-res gravatar displayed for newly-arrived user' bug? I thought it was reported months ago
Somehow I'm still seeing it on a daily basis

@YiJiang ...this frightens me... :-)

what is the url on c.ross?

1:16 PM
@TheRenamedException I'm sorry, for some reason that's always the first thing that pops into my head every time someone says 'RAWR'

@MarcGravell Can't tell, because I'm on Prism with no Firebug, but I believe the size of the gravatar url is set to around 12px or something
user image

@YiJiang LOL

This is going to take a long long time
Very long.

@Yi - cannot repro

1:21 PM
@MarcGravell Eh, I'll get you more details when I can get it on my main browser
But it definitely happens, I see it everyday when I pop into chat
I actually forgot I set that scan in motion just an hour ago, and was wondering about the sudden sporadic slow down in the operating system...

Is it wrong that I want like 5 of these in some sort of RAID? hothardware.com/Reviews/Intel-310-Series-80GB-SSD-Review

@drachenstern YES PLEASE, DO WANT

Q: Should research level only sites be allowed?

Lennart RegebroThere is a conflict going on with regards to the cstheory site at the moment on area51, that needs to be resolved. cstheory.SE is a research-level only site. It allows only questions that "can be discussed between two professors or between two graduate students working on Ph.D.'s, but not usuall...

I know right? zomg. the size of two or so quarters and 200+/s reads and 70/s writes and SATA and I could fit four of them in a standard drive bay with no problem and zomg
@PopularDemand yeah I saw that :\ I don't think so
I will say this: if the community can show the support and love for it and give it escape velocity, yes

@PopularDemand I am seriously considering posting a question if the Area 51 discussion system is really working. It is actually scary how quickly the discussions get out of hand, and a lot are about why a proposal was closed because it is so good :|

@Diago, something needs discussing...

2:38 PM
@Diago Hey, it's a Diago!

@Diago There's already a question like that on A51 discuss

I've never actually visited the A51 discussion zone. I never really wanted to have a discussion, except maybe about sites that have already launched.

I believe it's that question that prompted this one

@YiJiang I missed it somehow. Do you have a link?

Hey there @Diago, how goes?

2:41 PM
@TheRenamedException Busy Busy. Yourself?

Hanging in there

@YiJiang I'm not seeing it.

Q: What problems does the two-level split solve?

Lennart RegebroProposal: Beginner Theoretical Computer Science Kaveh asked what problem the two level split into research and non-research sites would cause. This has now gotten a couple of answers. I asked what problem is solved which I think is more important, and Kaveh thought this would be a different disc...

This is the one
And there's this one:

Q: Two level model (MO/Math.SE) vs one level model (SO)

KavehProposal: Beginner Theoretical Computer Science, Theoretical Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Theoretical Physics, etc. Recently there has been a number of cases where people from SO/SU/SF sites have criticized the two level model which is being used by MO/cstheory/Math.SE. I want to unde...

Argh. Why do people ask "how do I do X," and then comment on answers saying "thanks, now can you do it for my OS and browser and color scheme"?

> The problem a two-level split solves is that some researchers don't want to hang on a generic site
Sounds familiar... :)

2:43 PM
@YiJiang Oh. Sorry... I think I need to rephrase, those questions are prompting me to ask if the Area51 discussions need to be refined more.
I really do hate phpBB.

@Diago I feel your pain!
Does the following Microsoft ad look... wrong... to anyone besides me?

@TheRenamedException Not at first glance, why?

@PopularDemand IDK, must just be me
When I saw that on the back of a magazine I thought, What the- what is that guy doing???

He's just leaning into the camera
I'm gonna go with "scary face" but "innocent body language"

Stroke victim trying to smile?

2:59 PM
@Benjol so did you have any more commentary on the userscript from the wee hours of the am?
how was it not working?
I don't have any way to force alerts, so couldn't test the notifications, but expected they wouldn't work. I can fix that tho.

3:17 PM
So does this look like a real bug to anyone or just a hiccup? Note that I'm a mod over there, so that might be the reason for it :\

With some users I'd explain, but I happen to know that you know MSO exists... q:

You know emails get sent out when people create issues, right? (:

@RebeccaChernoff oh, thanks for reminding me (:
@RebeccaChernoff rebecca.chernoff.com 403 :P

@RebeccaChernoff yah but asking the groupbrain is easier to see if it's a known issue :p

Q: Shooting With Both Eyes Open

Craig Walker@Greg made an intriguing comment in this answer (emphasis mine): One of the things we're supposed to do when we're shooting is keep both eyes open; That helps avoid fatigue from shooting for hours, but also lets us see what is going on around us. That is smart in case good action is happening...

Right, who has 5 minutes to take me through the proper method of creating a branch in Mercurial? I am getting lost in all the documentation?

oy, not something I've tried. I wanna listen in tho
@RebeccaChernoff done so :p

3:43 PM
So mods from one site can unilaterally move questions to another site now, without any approval from anyone on the receiving end?

@NickT I was pretty sure it was always like that
however, also note that there's a full communication system for the mods on the other end

Like electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/10193/… doesn't seem well placed now
I'd be somewhat surprised if some Math.SE user/mod said "yeah, that goes here"

@NickT but it's about understanding a formula, no? What about it is poorly suited to math.SE?

It's about a software package, not so much the formula...hmm, got an answer since I've looked last

@PopularDemand Haha, I was 16 seconds faster :p

@Shog9 Ding, dong, the witch is dead!
I came back to the Tavern just to celebrate the deletion of that post.
@Diago Joel Spolsky has time: hginit.com/04.html

@PopularDemand Thanks. I actually had that open already. But thanks :)

This answer is still underrated!

A: What time is it?

Pekka What time is it? Where can I see the current server time on Stack Overflow? Click the envelope symbol: Your activity page always has the current time.

That's merging, not branching, no?

@PopularDemand I will miss it. A piece of SO history, gone. A true original, not merely a haphazard collection of others' work. An embarrassment to its creator. Disowned by all. A classic.

4:04 PM
@drachenstern Bah. See page 05, then.
@Shog9 It lives on in older data dumps and the Ten-K User Museum of History.

@PopularDemand bah indeed :p

@drachenstern It's related. Branching in Mercurial is not branching TFS or SVN users are used to. But starting to become clear to me.

@Diago yeah, it's definitely interesting stuff. I much prefer working with Hg but also wish that I had a good way to use in on my SqlServer stuff which I'm not seeming to have a high rate of luck with :\

@drachenstern VS 2010 DB Project in SCM works for me.
Or alternatively just putting the scripts into SCM

I just started using Mercurial myself. Tiny project I'm working on, just me, in my hours between "dinner" and "bed." I'd never have set up SVN for it.

4:09 PM
@Diago we work in SSMS primarily. I wish I could get my team to move to VS2010 DB

The probably would if they actually tried it, but they're so much more familiar with SSMS that getting them to move would be like ... well I'm not quite sure of a good analogy :p

@drachenstern I can't believe I never used it before. After a year I can't live without it.

@Diago I tried it, I loved it, I need my whole team to be on it, however.

4:12 PM
@ÓlafurWaage Thrilling class, huh?

Disk buffering
whoot whoot

@Diago Yeah, I just heard about free FogBugz yesterday. Didn't get a chance to set it up last night, but it's on my list for sure.

It's been an "awesome" day so I've been browsing SO and MSO

@PopularDemand Perfect for private projects, for public one's I use bitbucket.

4:14 PM
@drachenstern Freakin' diamond-users, always oppressing new users with "grammar" and "quality" and whatnot.

@PopularDemand I know right?
:( ~ So I commented, we'll see if he responds.

@Pop
grr
@PopularDemand did you have another name back in the day?

@ÓlafurWaage Yes.

And survey says?

@ÓlafurWaage Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi's approval ratings are down to 35%.

4:17 PM
you a reddit user?

@ÓlafurWaage Negative.

I only know 1 italian SO user

@ÓlafurWaage Me too, and we're probably thinking of the same guy.

splattne?

@ÓlafurWaage Oh, I didn't know about him. I was thinking of radp/badp.

4:19 PM
@PopularDemand Wow. GWBush had to start a war and trash the economy to get that. Silvio only has to be an utterly corrupt douche. European politics are so unfair.

@PopularDemand what was your old SO name?

@ÓlafurWaage My name on every SE site except MSO, which is also my original MSO name, is "Lord Torgamus."

it rings a few bells

@ÓlafurWaage So you understand why I had to change it, then.

By Popular Demand :)

4:21 PM
Can't have people remembering things about me, nope nope nope....

Anyone use VS2010 on a daily basis?

@ÓlafurWaage raise hand

any gotchas i need to know (I've used 2008 and 2005)
<-- just installed it, for C++ dev

@ÓlafurWaage None that I am aware of. I am currently running the SP1 Beta with success. It also depend on what you consider a gotcha?

just if anything is done differently than in < 2010 versions

4:23 PM
No intellisense for C++/CLI
(not that that really worked before either)

hehe, not using CLI much though

different project file format (MSBuild compatible - which is actually nice, but you'll probably have to review your settings if you're importing old projects)

hmm that could cause problems, can you convert from < 2010?

yes, it'll convert

4:26 PM
d'you do WinAPI GUIs at all?

no, not directly atleast
it will mostly be OpenGL programming
but class over! bbl

then you have less to worry about. Straight C++ support is improved, the compiler is a bit more friendly, and the IDE is... actually faster, for normal editing and such.

Ok cool :) Thanks.

ah, later

4:44 PM
If you've never used Unit Testing before, what would be the easiest and simplest place to learn about using them, and more importantly how to use them correctly?

@Diago indeed. It sounds like you and I are in roughly the same places right now ;)

@drachenstern I am building an application for StackApps, and I am using it as a learning opportunity.

@Diago I was considering doing such a thing but instead opted for userscripts and piddling about in chat ;)
I have an idea for another userscript, that I'll likely tend to in the next few weeks

I need to do something that I can use to further my career. These days it is hard to be developer that doesn't have something in the public domain

If you are trying unit testing, make sure you have some sort of code coverage (hudson etc) setup with it, makes it 100x more fun
turns creating tests into a video game

4:55 PM
@ÓlafurWaage Nice tip. I will look into that

:) Nothing more fun than to look at your code coverage listing, seeing a big class that only has 60% coverage and setting yourself a goal to get it to 80%

@ÓlafurWaage so the problem with that is I don't know what to use to set that up for handling C#/SQL/JS codebases. Got any good solids and what webserver would I pair that tool with, and how would it integrate with my database?

You usually don't write tests that talk directly to a database, instead write a mock class that acts like your database class and write your tests to that

Since you can not guarantee that the tests running might fail due to the database failing and not the code itself

5:10 PM
@ÓlafurWaage so that seems totally counterintuitive "let me build a class that's not testable"
Also, how does one mock the database class? I guess I just need to dig into something like nerddiner or something

In object-oriented programming, mock objects are simulated objects that mimic the behavior of real objects in controlled ways. A computer programmer typically creates a mock object to test the behavior of some other object, in much the same way that a car designer uses a crash test dummy to simulate the dynamic behavior of a human in vehicle impacts. Reasons for use In a unit test, mock objects can simulate the behavior of complex, real (non-mock) objects and are therefore useful when a real object is impractical or impossible to incorporate into a unit test. If an object has any of t...

HA! You call that a query execution plan? My grandma plans query executions better than that.

There are limitations to this though, so there is not 1 right method, but I've been taught by several teachers that this is the way you do it. But if you do write tests directly against an external dependency, you need to know that a test can fail due to the external dependency and not the code that accesses it
There are things though that are called End-to-End tests, that tests the system as a whole, and usually when people think of unit tests, they think of that as well.
Those tests will test the database and any other external dependencies but they are run in an environment that is as close to the real environment as possible, so not on a dev machine.
end to end is often called integration testing as well, if you're googling stuff

@ÓlafurWaage SO does that. "Create a question from a dummy user asking for the codez in JS, if he doesn't get a jquery answer in 8 minutes the test has failed."

:D I love running tests, makes me feel so powerful

5:19 PM
@badp lmao

Everything runs? I AM A GOD!
@badp I see you're using the meme I am blamed for, you should totally drop that and try jquery!

A: How about a shared reputation?

jzdThis question has been answered before. But to your specific point: it is hard to participate / follow / discuss across multiple sites. Even with 0 rep you have the ability to follow / participate / discuss. With the exception of commenting on other's posts. Which the 100 bonus rep s...

I'd love to drop what I'm doing right now and use jQuery

> Even with 0 rep … <-- EPIC FAIL!

5:38 PM
If you're unregistered, you have 0 rep!

I <3 Dropbox
and Dropbox <3 me

@Nyuszika7H sigh

@DanGrossman unless you post... anything. Then you have 1 rep.

@RebeccaChernoff There's been quite a few sighs from you today. Having a long day?

o: no (:

5:48 PM
@RebeccaChernoff Ah. I was about to get worried.

Hi! :)

@Shog9 Privileges: 1 Prove your existence to the world.

Yeah, I just tested this theory... Forgot how many badges / notifications the site throws at you for posting your very first answer

keep expecting to hear crackers and see confetti falling while dancing unicorns sing "for he's a jolly good fellow"

5:52 PM
@Shog9 It should be more like, "Are you 100000% sure your asking an actual question, and have you spent at least 20 minutes thinking about it before you asked?" When it's an answer: "Have you done more then just google and paste the first link you find?"

Today's bad pun of the day brought to you from the Internets.

That would be me.

Nokia alternative plans. The most interesting: Plan E, Plan K, Plan T,

@badp Where do you get the time to read all this stuff?

Oh, /. linked to that one.

5:57 PM
I actually like Plan A, Plan H might have some potential, Plan M looks familiar, and PLan 5 has already been tried.

@Diago Yeah.

Considering I haven't ever actually laid eyes on a Nokia smartphone, I'll be impressed if they have any luck breaking into the US market - regardless of what OS they do it with.

@Shog9 I have owned to many Nokia "SmartPhones" that I have not been able to sell, to say that they will most likely struggle. I used the E63 for a month and couldn't wait to use my iPhone again.

I'd actually like to use Windows 3.1 on a phone, would be interesting
2

@ÓlafurWaage Have you seen Windows CE?

6:09 PM
Yes.

Reminded me a lot of win31 when it was first released. Program groups, icons, lousy color schemes...
2

And that's how we like it. :D

6:56 PM
Hmm, my 10:30 meetings really need to stop being pushed to 2:30 at the last minute, otherwise I'm going to stop waking up.

7:16 PM
4,444 starred messages
yay?

@badp It could be a sign of the end of days, but I think that base was already covered by the inexplicable appearance of yet another "Big Momma's House" movie.

@Shog9 I used to have a Nokia phone
@ÓlafurWaage Yea, limited file name lengths would be useful. But what about drivers?

@Shog9 They're "huge" in Europe.
