That difference between a real recruiter and the paper-pushers is like night and day.
I reposted my resume on dice.com recently. Three days ago, I received two emails from the same paper-pusher, one through Dice's interface and one a direct email. Neither of them was an actual communication, just the job requirements in an email. They didn't even address me by name, despite that being available in my Dice profile.
Today, I received a short, well-worded email from a real recruiter, like it's supposed to work
Seriously, who thought it'd be a good idea to outsource recruiting?

7:10 PM
@GeorgeMarian google apparently
:)

I got an email about 5 months back for a 6 month contract
with a "foutune 500 client in Mountain View, CA"
hmm WHO could that be

Fair enough.

and ti was the same thing
just basically reposting the job req with "we think you might be a good fit" in front

I think some of it recruiters finding the postings and looking for people they could represent. That's probably why a lot of the ads on craigslist state they don't want to be contacted by recruiters.

A: What should I name my cat

wildpeaksSchrödinger At least that's what tv shows usually expect geeks to call their cat.

Lately, I've started looking for the direct posting by searching for some of the requirements on google. If I can find the original posting, I'd much rather go to them directly then through a paper-pusher.

Hmm. I think I could get addicted to chat on my phone. Only bad thing is sometimes when you do something else on your phone it'll take a feww seconds to reload the page

@balpha holy potatoes
hehe
Fantastic question

@TimStone Since you've indicated that you have an iPhone, I'd like to take the opportunity to direct you to my new app. itunes.apple.com/us/app/nippon/id415518235?mt=8&ls=1

@Earlz Same thing on iPhone, it's a single mobile view for all mobile devices, AFAIK.
@Earlz What would you like to star?

Q: I need to create a program.This is our assignment I need it by 10:00

Liam YorkvilleQuestion 1# (3 marks total) Modularization is an important concept in programming. Make sure you start your program automatically from a main method (2 marks). Print "Welcome to the program" to the console or terminal (depending on your development environment) (1 mark). Question 2# (6 marks) ...

I hate when people rip questions out of a book and expect people to answer it for you

@Earlz Even more when they give you a time frame to answer in shakes head :P

New badge: first delete vote submitted: (Albiet do the people who are eligible for that really need more badges)...

@RebeccaChernoff "Make sure you start your program automatically from a main method " is he talking to me?

Oh noes, 9 minutes until the end of the primary and I am still stuck on a conference call!!! I need to pull a @TimStone and pretend to be listening

7:52 PM
I'm on a conference call too, hahah. What appropriate timing :P

Town hall digest nearly completed, only 6 questions remain!
@TimStone Maybe we're on the same conference call, is your real name Adam or Chris? :-p

I appologize ive missed the last 4 classes since I have been in the hospital with a broken colar-bone and this is worth 50% of my year – Liam Yorkville
That is fantastic

@TheRenamedException We were talking about someone named Chris, does that count?

HAHAHA
@RebeccaChernoff I WILL NOT FAIL YOU!!!!

Good, hurry up and finish because then I have a question for you.

Damn, battery basically dead. wanders around hoping to find a table with a power outlet within reach

Oh no, out of time! :-(
damn conference call

Damn work! shakes fist

lol
this is an unpleasant call too :-(

Oh, that's not cool.
My call is yesterday's call that was moved because Tuesday's call was moved to Wednesday on account of someone being sick.

8:12 PM
@TimStone Yeah, I was wondering why you'd have a conference call on a Friday.
Oh wait, I thought The Renamed said that

@RebeccaChernoff Ruh roh. I guess your computer died, then.

@TimStone Man, you sure exercise your arms.

@drachenstern I knew it!
@badp Gotta stay in shape.

That's a star, not a diamond! Silly chatters.

8:17 PM
@drachenstern You're a mod… on a beta site?

@ChrisJesterYoung That's what she gets for wandering around.

@RebeccaChernoff Yes, work...

@RebeccaChernoff I don't think harassing poor Josh is part of your job ;)

@TimStone Wait... what in the world do you think a Community Manager does?

@RBemrose Hmm, this is a good point. Very well, continue as you were @RebeccaChernoff.

8:38 PM
I meant I am getting back to work.

@RebeccaChernoff and I was trying to imply that you were goofing off chatting with us. ;)

Any web developers here might appreciate this:

@JeffAtwood why r u lurking? You normally discuss topics or leave right away ... as is you've been lurking now for like a half hour or more ... ;)

Yea jeff, stop lurking and join us moonlanguage people

@drachenstern Are you sure he's here? I don't see his avatar in the list.

grrr, I do :(

8:57 PM
@PopularDemand Ditto, no repro.

I probably just need a hard refresh ... but it's normally so good about updating

@drachenstern is hallucinating.

Anyone have the chat userscript link handy?

He's right there, next to George Marian. I refuse to refresh. :P

no jeff here

8:59 PM
Okay, yinz keep seeing what you want to see....

Thanks!

@TimStone I approve.

@TimStone you too then?

@drachenstern Yep

9:00 PM
Well, @drachenstern and @TimStone - Get well soon. I hope it's not contagious, I don't want to see @JeffAtwood everywhere I go.
backs away slowly

@drachenstern Actually I think I remember this being an issue, where the server doesn't issue an event on user timeout to remove them from the room.

@TimStone sounds like we both need to hard refresh then :(
I'll go first ... SEPpuukuuuuuu

Never!
WEET?! Darn you Jin :P

everyone should just program in assembly, much simpler

@ÓlafurWaage You did NOT just use the words "assembly" and "simpler" in the same sentence (without a connecting "not")

9:07 PM
@RebeccaChernoff I has a question

@RBemrose Assembly is just simpler

Especially when it comes to coding simple felines.

there

partially RE: an email I received, should I reply to that or ask here? (specifically about a chat.SE room)
I'm gonna presume the other way is faster than asking here here :p

hear hear!

9:09 PM
Make it so. Wait, this isn't The Bridge.

Wil
To anyone who doesn't know/missed the chat earlier - Tomorrow at about 6:00PM GMT, we are going to try and hold a SE wide game - HL2:DM (free for most people). If you are interested, the official room is:

@ÓlafurWaage Yes, it is simpler; that's why it's so complex.

:o

Bah, I'll be at a wedding at 6GMT D:

9:14 PM
@drachenstern - I'm trying to design a db for my apps.
I've got it down to eight fields.

Wil
Not sure on best way to announce/let people know - but so far there should be a good few people.... I will try to announce tomorrow a few hours before hand and then just before start.
@mootinator Take a laptop! (unless it's your wedding!)... if it is popular, we hope to make it a regular event, weekly/monthly and more games in the future.

@Wil Hey, did you adjust the event time in the Game On chat room?

@Wil Heheh

Wil
@RBemrose No - I set it when I first created the room - I thought if I don't have a target, I will never organise/get it done...

App Id, Name, version, description, image, link, update date , oh that's seven, but yea

Wil
9:16 PM
No way to edit time/date :( I will delete the other one and create a new one.

@drachenstern - What SQL types would you use?

int, int, tin, int, int, int, int

@mootinator Huh?
You want me to normalize my table? I want to keep it simple for now, just one table.

varchar(max), varchar(max), varchar(max)
@Moshe I'm being unhelpful.

@mootinator Noted.
(and starred.)

9:19 PM
I just use TEXT for all my database fields :P

Wil
@RebeccaChernoff or any mod.... I don't suppose you can create a event? ... It's a community thing!

int, char(8), uuid, varchar(max), depends if it's the actual image or a reference, char(4), DateTime
There are no glaring flaws in my suggestion.
Honest.

@mootinator Thanks, what's uuid? Also, it's a link to the image.
And is char 4 a bit short for a link?

@RebeccaChernoff unplesant conference call just finished, need to meet with my boss to decide how to handle the outcome, I will be back soon...

@TheRenamedException Do you need us to go kick some shins?

9:24 PM
@Moshe It's a unique identifier. Some sort of string is probably better :)
I have to go be unhelpful somewhere else now unfortunately :(

@mootinator ok, thanks.
@mootinator version is a number 1.x etc.

I'd probably use an nvarchar(255) for relatively short things. Because that's what Fluent NHibernate would do.

x.y.z potentially.

Oh wow, apparently Nokia vanished and the Bizarro World version of Nokia took its place.

@Moshe Doesn't need to be stored as one though.

9:25 PM
@mootinator True.

In a single day, Nokia has killed both Symbian and Qt.

why do supposedly technical Microsoft articles always have to sound like advertisements?
Internet Explorer provides rich, interoperable capabilities to web developers. The Internet Explorer Team knows you don’t want to rewrite and retest your websites again and again; standards adoption by browser vendors is a good way to reach that objective.

With Internet Explorer 8, the Internet Explorer team delivered a highly interoperable implementation of CSS 2.1, and concurrently contributed a test suite with over 7200 tests to the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). This is important. Without validation tests, standards are more challenging to implement consistently, thereby making them

@TimStone haha, Will post details shortly

@RBemrose Now, now, Qt can't be killed so easily
Symbian already was becoming increasingly irrelevant

@badp True, and I wouldn't be surprised if KDE immediately forked it.

9:28 PM
@balpha To appeal to all of those standards-lusty developers, of course.
Also, probably because they don't pay particularly technical people to write them.

Yes, please stop giving me useful features! I hate useful features if they aren't standardized by ECMA, ISO, and at least three others!

@balpha because they're written by sales groups?

In SQL, does the length of a Decimal include the decimal points?

well, there's some technical content in there... So I guess it was written by a couple of engineers, and then "prettified" by sales guys

@Moshe As I recall, it depends on the DB server you're using.

Wil
9:31 PM
@badp It is such a shame... I loved my P910 years ago... wanted it for so long, looked good... then when I got it, it was a little disappointment... but I did like Symbian... just not sure what really happened :S

@RBemrose MySQL 5
@drachenstern Thank you.

@Moshe For MySQL, the Decimal length includes the part to the right of the decimal place. So... DECIMAL(9,2) is 1234567.89

@RBemrose Cool, thanks. Is that appropriate for version numbers? (1.0.1, for example)

Most version numbers aren't like decimals at all.

9:42 PM
@Moshe no, four fields (or three if you want three) are more appropriate
and then a unique from there to other records that are version dependent

@drachenstern I'm storing info about my iOS apps.

@Moshe yeah, I gathered
alternately store it as a string
it's not really a number, just like an IP address isn't really a number

major, minor, build, for instance...

I want to convert this page to a PHP page with a backend.
@drachenstern I was thinking of that.

Store it as a string.
or drop two major/minor and store it as an decimal

9:45 PM
@drachenstern String it is.
What's a good length for a link? I'm thinking 300, because the max name for an iOS app is like 200.

OK @RebeccaChernoff, I am back now

over 9000

night

Okay, Shabbat is shortly, I'm logging off. Thanks @drachenstern (I noticed a higher high score from someone ;-) - nice.)

9:51 PM
@Moshe yep, ciao

Jin
10:16 PM
greetings stackers

'Ello @Jin!
(And @MarcGravell and @mmyers who snuck in :P)

I just came in because I saw @ÓlafurWaage was here, but he's gone now.
I guess that's a really bad greeting. Let me try again: Hi Tim!

It's OK, I was just going to turn around and blame you for ever having left anyway, so. ;)

I just had a great idea: I need to buy a yardstick and attach a small whiteboard to it. Then I can put messages on it and hold it up so the people who always hold conversations by my cubicle can see.
Or I could actually talk to them, but that seems hard.

I was just on the phone for three hours. Talking is overrated.

10:27 PM
@TimStone hear hear!

@TheRenamedException Sure beats "talk talk".

@mmyers aye, aye

> Bad joke quota exceeded for the day. Come back in 2 hours.
DRAT!
Shouldn't have used all of them in the mod room.

And... I suck at games! no lie... just thought it would be good to do a few things a bit further out of SE than chat!

Hence, I will not be joining the game. I'm just a fragtarget

Wil
Well... I am there! and, it is just for fun! if you are bored and have a spare 5 minutes, join in!

I don't think I have th game, I know I can't do it tonight (plans) and I might on another time

11:04 PM
@drachenstern Ahem?

Indeed sir

Why would you blame Adam?

Because he put the tag on?

Look at the new app gallery! stackapps.com

@RebeccaChernoff AWESOME

Nice!

Posted by Jeff Atwood on February 11th, 2011

We just rolled out version 1.1 of the Stack Exchange API. To see what’s new, browse the revised documentation at:

Rebecca took an informal survey of the API developer community at Stack Apps, and determined that what everyone wanted most (beyond v2 of the API, yes, I know) was an improved application gallery. So we’ve made the default page on the site the application gallery, and spruced it up to be more visually friendly to average users.

This should make it easier for Stack Exchange users to find your app and start using it! …

@RebeccaChernoff Is the fact that the /usage route's console and other thingadongdongs not working a bug?

@RebeccaChernoff you had a question for me?

11:08 PM
Hmm, console worked for me on /privileges
@TheRenamedException I did?

@RebeccaChernoff That's what I tried too, but in Firefox Firebug simply shows two errors instead

3 hours ago, by Rebecca Chernoff
Good, hurry up and finish because then I have a question for you.

setting a property that has only a getter
api.stackoverflow.com/Content/Js/console.js?v=2
Line 1

@YiJiang No errors in chrome 10, hrm.

> Find result - 202578 hits

11:11 PM
Hmmm, I think it's... no, it's a weird error

@TheRenamedException ooooh, right. Is Gaming's THCD done?

It's conflicting with Firebug I guess

@RebeccaChernoff ... I am posting the last 3 answers now...

var console = {
  hello: 'world'
};

@TheRenamedException NO QUESTION FOR YOU THEN!

11:11 PM
For example won't run

I had to calm down an unruly client, LOL

@RebeccaChernoff Is the question "Where do we send your t-shirt for all your hard work?"

Well that's odd, another error. It worked the first time round, but the second time I tried it the error console gave this error:
Error: invalid label
Source File: api.stackoverflow.com/1.1/usage/methods/privileges
Line: 1, Column: 2
Source Code:
  "privileges": [
Which is odd, because that looks like valid JSON to me, hrm...

@TimStone \o/

Anyway, idea: don't show the console for routes which take no parameters

11:16 PM
@YiJiang does it have the braces?

Having to click on the button and having nothing show up is confusing.

Ok last question @RebeccaChernoff and then your followup!

@drachenstern Definitely not, I think - arrays are supported in json

@YiJiang no I meant before the "priv part

@drachenstern Not sure, not using Firebug is really annoying

11:17 PM
@YiJiang ah

:returns from the casino:
Nope, dream wasn't a sign, I didn't hit a jackpot.

@DanGrossman did you win?
Also, I had @'ed you on something earlier @DanGrossman ... did you see it?

Yeah, I'll take a look

idk if you know something special, but you do seem to have a specialty in that area ;)

MongoDB capped collections come to mind, but IDK
> Capped collections are fixed sized collections that have a very high performance auto-FIFO age-out feature (age out is based on insertion order). They are a bit like the "RRD" concept if you are familiar with that. In addition, capped collections automatically, with high performance, maintain insertion order for the objects in the collection; this is very powerful for certain use cases such as logging.

11:20 PM
yeah that's sort of what I was thinking, didn't know about the capped being a for real option tho
also, he needs the ability to roll it like a paper reel tho :\ so he can live migrate it out

OK @RebeccaChernoff, posting the summary now, YEY!

\o/

@TheRenamedException yatta!

@RebeccaChernoff I am going to combine all final thoughts from bith town halls into a single answer, do you approve?
She is sleeping again...

> New tags:

11:28 PM
@DanGrossman wtf? Grrr...

@DanGrossman isn't that the highest positive int on a signed int system?
assuming int is 4 bytes

:nods: Remember the "most common phone number" stuff a few days ago?

Also supposedly a dallas telephone #
I thought so

Apparently some people also think it's a useful tag.

@TheRenamedException sure.

11:30 PM
Cool. Posting now

wonders what part of "run with it" was unclear. (;

He just wanted to make sure he wasn't running with scissors. :P

@TheRenamedException LIES!! She never sleeps

What's so dangerous about running with scissors anyway?

@RebeccaChernoff wonders which part of "wants feedback from respected members of the community" was unclear (;

11:32 PM
The part where you addressed me specifically!

@RebeccaChernoff You speak for the community, which was too lazy to respond on its own. ;)

@RebeccaChernoff Can you bur-ni-nate that new tag there?

A: 2011 Moderator Election - Town Hall Chat Digest

Josh Rebecca Chernoff asked in the first town hall: Pseudo-question: final thoughts from the candidates. (: And again in the second: So, pseudo-question: final thoughts? (: Ivo Flipse answered: @RebeccaChernoff I hope that by becoming a moderator here, I can help the community as I can at Supe...

Why can't you?

Done! \o/
@RebeccaChernoff it was your question! Plus you're very respected :-)

11:34 PM
@RebeccaChernoff is the stackapps app list cached?

@RebeccaChernoff Won't it be easier for a mod to do this, then to have me edit 13 questions, and risk that guy come around and complaining about it?

I've added some metadata to SO Live, but the app list seems unimpressed

Hm? I thought it was just on one question.
@badp I would assume so, but I am not certain. You could post on the site.

@RebeccaChernoff That guy who created the tag went around and tagged it on 12 questions

yeah, the app list updated now.

11:36 PM
Alternatively, synonym it to integer overflow or something
Yup, exists, just synonym it to that

@YiJiang flag for mod attention? I haven't looked but it sounds like bad behavior the mods may be interested in.
So propose a synonym.

@YiJiang This is what I would do.

Is someone really going to subscribe to questions about integer-overflow? Neither of those are good tags.

OK @RebeccaChernoff, done!

Q: 2011 Moderator Election - Town Hall Chat Digest

JoshThe following is a "digest" version of the 2011 Moderator Election Town Hall Chat. The format, as described on Meta Stack Overflow, is one answer to this question for every question asked in the Town Hall, containing all the candidate's answers to that question. This digest will contain the quest...

Actually you probably can't, but you could post on meta requesting it I guess. shrugs meh. If the user is causing a problem I'd go mod flag.

11:39 PM
You mean you can't solve all of our problems and we'll have to go through the normal channels instead? Oh no! ;)

@TheRenamedException here's a softball for the up and coming 10ker serverfault.com/questions/234584/btrfs-crashhhh

Can or can't isn't the issue. I'm not here to override the working channels.

She's gone corporate already! (:

@RebeccaChernoff That was kind of my point, but :P
@Fosco Hahah

@RebeccaChernoff Won't the mods exercising their discretion and do these sort of things directly be a lot quicker? It's not like asking a mod on chat isn't a valid support channel

11:43 PM
@TheRenamedException Ok, so now that you've done that - is there any feedback you have for me on running the actual THC that would help? (If you want to continue doing the THCDs that is.)

You could have flagged it and someone may have already taken care of it by now. ;)

@TimStone Should I? She suggested a new Meta question

Either or, I don't think there's much need for debate on this one, it just needs addressing.

Asking a mod is great, that's why I suggested a mod flag. My point though is that my name is not on the moderator list stackoverflow.com/about#moderators (;

hahahahaha

11:47 PM
@RebeccaChernoff Lil' blue mod girl - you'll always be a mod in my mind
Although you should really be lil' blue dev girl

@RebeccaChernoff hmmm, I don't think so. The biggest thing is making sure people use the reply function, and stars for questions. I found today that searching for :<message id> to find answers was much easier
The gaming town hall got really confusing at points because people were asking questions all willy-nilly, but, I don't see any way around that. The format is good. The point of the digests is to compensate for that, so, I don't think that should be restricted

@TheRenamedException Woodchuck chuck wood?

Yes, that
@RebeccaChernoff I do want to keep doing Town Hall Digests, if they're helping people. I like helping. I don't like wasting time, and I do not want to make things worse. From what I can tell, it's somewhat helpful, so I am happy to continue
