Is a rep inquiry an acceptable question for Meta? My rep just dropped 288 points and I would really like to know why. I don't really care about losing the actual rep (288 can be made up in a few hours so no biggy), it's just gonna bug me all night if I don't know the why behind it. (/reputation?recalc=true already done, no change).

3:48 AM
@chown on Stack Overflow?
How do you know it was 288?

@chown For future reference, it is... But I'll save you the time, and tell you it was a combination of votes rolled back (someone was obsessively up- or down-voting you) and reputation earned from posts that were deleted or migrated in the past.

@jcolebrand I was on SO via my iPhone, then 2 minutes later I opened my laptop, went to SO and saw the loss. So right now, on my iPhone is the main page showing 9375 rep, but on my laptop here it shows 9087

Interesting

@Shog9 Interesting, thanks for looking that up. Does the script that checks for unusual vote patterns not happen every day? I'm wondering because 288 is more then I even earned yesterday.

@chown well it was a combination of things, apparently from what he's saying.
but that script does happen to run at least daily.

3:56 AM
@chown It does, but your reputation hadn't been recalculated in a while - so, for instance, posts like this one - deleted three hours ago, 55 points - would have factored into that.

Ohhh, crazy. I didnt know migrated questions/answers took the rep with them! Thats cool, thanks so much!

Cheers

Okay smart guy, whatcha got on this one? @Shog9
Also, anyone remember the question where the question about "what do we do with questions where the OP asks about code but the answer turns out to be his configuration" is?

4:03 AM
@PopularDemand No idea. Nothing useful deleted, no evidence of abuse by her or anyone connected...

@chown Thanks, but that's a different problem.

Q: WICKET : Ajax is not working in my wicket application

Sohan PooniaI have used wicket 1.4.18. Ajax is not working after filling in the textfield. Java code: Form form = new Form("form"); TextField<String> text=new TextField<String>("manualUrl",new PropertyModel(this, "code")); text.setOutputMarkupId(true); form.add(text); On...

OP asks "what's wrong with this Java code?" and then self-answers "oops, I had bad HTML."
Nothing abusive, but really not adding much value to the Internet.
It's 100% impossible to solve the problem just based on the question body.

@PopularDemand so, close as too localized.

Well, yes (although in this particular case I'm selfishly waiting 10 minutes until I copy out the code for unrelated reasons), but I wanted to rediscover the MSO post that says so for future reference.

what

There's an MSO question about this situation. The answer was (I think) "close them as too localized." I want to find that post again so that I can point people to it in the future. My search-fu failed.

4:10 AM
oh, are you thinking of Pekka's question?
About links to code hosted on other sites?

No. On second thought, maybe the one chown gave was close enough. I shouldn't be allowed on the Internet when I'm tired.
(Or, you know, ever.)

Might not be the exact one your talking about, but its a dam good answer
for directing localized people to
@PopularDemand btw, how do you get that cool question preview to show up in chat?

4:28 AM
paste the link to only the question or answer by itself
we call it oneboxing
"btw, how do you get that onebox to show up in chat?"
In this case his post consisted of this:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/8166603/wicket-ajax-is-not-working-in-my-wicket-application

So if I do:

Q: What questions should be closed with reason "too localized"?

Dana the SaneWhat is the definition of "too localized" for closing a question? I see several suggestions, but nothing definitive or specific.

altho to be fair it would've OBd with: http://stackoverflow.com/q/8166603

sweet!

pasting a room link does that (and also that's the room where you can play with testing stuff out)
and if I were to post a link to a question (found on the dropdown to the left of each message) then I would get this:
2 secs ago, by jcolebrand
and if I were to post a link to a question (found on the dropdown to the left of each message) then I would get this:
a quoted chat message

OBd?

4:34 AM
Oneboxed
I use a lot more acronyms than most

ok, seriously @jco - what's with the proliferation of initialization today?

Man, my SE addiction is getting a little out of control. Is it bad when your girlfriend is jealous of a website?
Maybe someone should propose an area 51: StackExchangersAnonymous

My advice is to get off the computer and go spend some time with her

True, but it wouldn't be an addiction if it were that easy to stop ^

Try being those of us who moderate and are in many chatrooms at the same time ;-)

Get in line, @chown.

Would not make sense to remove the excerpt from the tag pages? That is already shown in the popup that appears when hovering the tag, where it is not truncated.
I mean the page that lists all the used tags.
In stackoverflow.com/tags the excerpt is shown twice: once in the page itself, and once in the popup that appears when you hover the tag button shown in the page.

2:18 PM
Hmm, I wonder if it's intentional that the tag popup is enabled on that page..

Town-hall kinda soured me on some folks... If your impulse response to, "I don't see anything that needs to be done here" is "Better talk it over with the other mods", you're gonna waste a lot of time...
@Shog9 Unfortunately, most non-mods see these answers as a positive thing.

@chown Yeah; not just non-mods. But whatever; they'll figure it out fast enough.

@Shog9 I suppose I fall into that camp. Oh well. :-(
