4:01 PM
@Fosco - welcome back
Oh, @RebeccaChernoff - too! It's been a quiet morning.

@Moshe I will remain reachable on pekka@gmx.de, you can ping me on that one when things are ready.

@ErickRobertson still there?

@Pekka That an email address (or chatroom)?

4:09 PM
@Moshe E-Mail!
Although I will surely pop in here from time to time

@Pekka Just checking.
I'm technically ready when you are, I just need to replace my strings with the calls to the localize functions.

@Moshe ah, okay. It will be a couple of weeks on my end, and I might become unavailable after that if I find something new quickly, so no guarantees. How much would it be? 20 sentences? 200? 2000?

@Pekka Not 20, not 2000, somewhere in the middle. The app description is a bit long, about 2000 characters.
You can sign into Yahoo! Mail with Google. what is this world coming to?

@Moshe ah, okay. Ping me in a couple of weeks' time, I might be able to contribute at least a part. But as said, no guarantees.
Is there a SE site for app translations in the works by the way?

@Pekka Not that I know of. It's not really a SE style kinda site. That would be more like, "please translate this", not "How do you translate this?"(I did think of making a service like that by the way.)

4:18 PM
@Moshe yeah, crowdsourcing might work well for that (If it's somehow possible to grasp the context of the sentence that is being translated, that is often the biggest obstacle.)

@Pekka My thoughts indeed.

@Moshe I think there is a Python web app for this named Rosetta, I contributed some translations to a Stack Overflow clone with it once

It's pretty nice
But seems Django specific

Nice, but not what I'm after.

4:21 PM
@Moshe yeah
It would have to be a web app that allows screen shots / screencasts for context. With a rep system similar to SO

and meta memes.
"+10, enough freehanded circles."

@badp Yes, that too.
How many languages can you say "oy" in?

@Moshe rchern.

They list 6
But there are more
This is a list of digraphs used in various Latin alphabets. (See also List of Cyrillic digraphs.) Capitalization involves only the first letter (ch – Ch) unless otherwise stated (ij – IJ). Letters with diacritics are arranged in alphabetic order according to their base. That is, ‹å› is alphabetized with ‹a›, not at the end of the alphabet as it would be in Norwegian, Swedish and Danish. Substantially modified letters such as (a variant of ‹s›) and (based on ‹o›) are placed at the end. ’ ‹’b› (capital ‹’B›) is used in the Bari alphabet to represent . ‹’d› (capital ‹’D›) is used in the ...

In turk, "oy" means vote. So, when Jeff wants screams "VOTE! VOTE! VOTE!"...
4

4:25 PM
@badp Haha.

I love how they don't even list Yiddish.
2

@RebeccaChernoff - Yea, i noticed. Well, it's a wiki, why not edit it?

A complete declination of oy. I'm so j-oy-ous right now.

@badp I'm...a quantity?

@RebeccaChernoff er, no, a language. A pretty universal one too.

4:26 PM
Hahahaha!
</jolly-laugh>

OYUMUZUN

(removed)

@Moshe "of our vote"

@badp Ah, Okay.
@Pekka - If you can tell me how to say "Okay" in German, you will have translated a lot of the UI already ;-)

the plural forms of 'oy' are full of undotted ı's. So, when Jon Skeet and Tony the Pony were talking about capitalization and Turkish...

4:29 PM
@Moshe ahahaha! Depending on context, "okay" is fine in most cases. It's become part of the language
Can you make an example?

@Pekka Hang on. Or, ...wait for it... ;-)
Also, @Pekka - i assume that most of the items stay the same. They're sushi names. Unless there are prefixes or suffixes to be added.

@Moshe "OK" will do fine here, it's the default label for the OK button.

@Pekka What other options are there? I feel like I'm doing a "halfhearted" job using borrowed words. But then again, English is a borrowed language.

@Moshe I assume translating that "OK" is not your responsibility

@badp What do you mean by that?

4:38 PM
@Moshe no, this is really the best option here, German is very anglicized in the computer area.

@Moshe Doesn't iOS do some basic translation itself?

@badp Yes, but not there. I would have to use a system button, but that is usually for the "Done" button in the toolbar.

Like, you have a Yes/No dialog and if the device is set in German, the buttons read "Ya"/"Nein" without you doing anything

@Pekka Ok (pun intended)
@badp ... (pre-edit)
@badp Yes, that's true, but not in that context. The UIAlertControl does not have any default system buttons as far as I'm aware. You pass it a string constant as the label. The developer is required to translate those.

Faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaail.

4:41 PM
@badp Well, yes but, translation is easy enough, provided you know the given language of course.

@Moshe That's going to look nice on my CV! "Translated Sushi names for iPhone app" ;)

@Pekka Haha, yep. Well, it's more than the names. I could email you the description, but the app is not ready. I think I'll wait. (But if you want, you can translate the above screenshot, which I again forgot to nuke in time.)

@Moshe yeah, all right. For the time being, the translation: "Information / Tage übrig / ??? / Bargeld / Schulden / Ersparnisse". What context is "cart" in?

A pushcart. Like a street vendor's cart. A concession stand perhaps?

Like this? Edit: Ah, nevermind

4:45 PM
...waiting for it...

Okay, and what does the number signify?
The number of carts, or the number of sushis in it, or something else?

Number of items you have/How many items you can carry at once. (Sushis in it.)

So it could also be "In cart: 0/125"?

It seems to me that the quality in SE is slightly going downwards

@badp why?
@Moshe If it has wheels, I would translate it with "Im Wagen"

4:47 PM
Ah, ok.
Makes sense, actually. (uses limited knowledge of German to understand the translation.)
Thank you.

example of the now: after suggesting a proposal, you're shown your post. A naked blockquote (no class, no id) is added at the top of the post explaining what happened. It is thus unthemable :|

@Moshe no problem.
@badp not sure I follow

@Pekka Ditto that.

That bit is indistinguishable, visually and markup-wise, from the actual post.

@badp ah-ha! That makes sense.

4:51 PM
@Pekka Once again, Ditto that.
Close ring - go do your thing.

Q: Which Books do you recommend?

JohnSmithOf the following which do you recommend? Or if you have better please suggest them. Thank You! Programming in Objective-C 2.0 Stephen G. Kochan Cocoa and Objective-C: Up and Running Scott Stevenson Objective-C for Dummies Neal Goldstein.

It's a dupe.
fires up Xcode to make a sample project for guy with a 47% accept ratio. (I may be insane.)

5:15 PM
yeah, I'm insane.

5:35 PM
Hey, bluecoats, et al, (@RebeccaChernoff, @badp) is it wrong to leave a "Welcome to SO!" comment? This guy posted a decent question with no formatting problems and has only 1 rep. It's a refreshing surprise.

Why'd it be wrong?

@badp Pointless noise.
I guess not.

They're comments.
start helping him get out of the misery of 1 rep maybe

@badp I did. what voting ring? ... heh.

A: Problems with finding Three20 Header Files for iPhone App

MosheIt sounds like you haven't imported the files correctly. Have another look at where you added the files to you project, if you have at all. (If not, you need to drag them into your project first!)

You can too.

5:56 PM
Whew, went from 175 answers to 182... moving right along...

6:31 PM
185 done for today.

6:44 PM
Hey @Moshe, congrats on the release

its out? nice job!

Hey there @Fosco. Check your email, my boss should have sent you something

@Josh Really?... I don't see anything. gfosco at gmail ?

@Fosco That could explain why he asked me why you didn't respond ;-)
I'll ask him to resend
@Fosco just checked his sent box (I like being the sysadmin!) hirefosco@...

ah damn, im sorry... all email at fosco.com is down

6:51 PM
no problem, I'll ask him to resend to your gmail!

I haven't set it back up since I moved servers.
Thanks. I wonder what it is!

:-)
I'd better go grab some lunch if I am going to make it back in time for the Town Hall!
In case anyone doesn't know:

Gratzie

Still 65 mins to its official start

@badp I can make it if I rush!
catch you guys later

6:55 PM
64 MINUTES!
later.

So how did @YiJiang get it if it's not already in the API?\

I might be here...

@GeorgeStocker screen scraping

@badp Gotcha.

@Josh thank you. We are not done until it passes approval, but G-d willing, that wont be a problem.
I'll know in about a week or two.

7:39 PM
When did @balpha get a shiny new gravatar? I just noticed

about a day ago

Anyone know about Wine VS VirtualBox?

Fiver says this is again a super-egregious sock puppet, about to be humiliated in public

Q: about 600 reputation has disappeared, what did I do wrong?

JanI was just checking SO and found out that my reputation has dropped from about 1200/1300 to 593. What has happened? I didn't do anything special.

hmm
no, I think not this time

@balpha awww
(Had hoped for some entertainment :)
But if what he says in the comment to Waiwai's answer is correct, it's a weird case

7:53 PM
yeah. Not sure why the rep would be that far off
be it's correct; after a racalc, he has about 600 more

Stange
*r

@Pekka Seriously, what is with those lately? Is it the same guy over and over?

@MichaelMrozek I think it was the same guy at least twice
Hansmukh and his sock puppets :)
One even had a posterous.com page in his profile to create the illusion of a real person. But it was empty.
@Moshe only that the former never works
(based on 3 days' experience in 2001 or so, so don't take too seriously :)

@Pekka thanks. I sorted it out
(I hope) out with a friend over the phone.

SO Townhall chat is starting now.

8:03 PM
@balpha Well, you finally got your stress testy thing!

meh, seeing about 30 people so far
that's nothing
with 30 people in the room, you can actually still have a conversation :)

@balpha eh, if you did want over nine thousand users, you could hold an Ubuntu release party on AskUbuntu :)
...with talking rep down to 1.
I mean, I don't think stress'll ever be higher than tonight's...

8:22 PM
Yeah, stress on the software isn't really an issue. We've previously seen that conversation scales far worse than the chat software itself

8:44 PM
> You have fully used your vote allowance for today
First time I've ever done that (chat stars)

@MichaelMrozek And not a single inane post. :P

9:14 PM
Very telling Town Hall. Can we force everyone to read the transcript before they vote? ;)

LOL @ legitimately running out of stars.

9:30 PM
@Tim Stone It'd be nice if the election page could somehow parse the questions and answers and have a digest of what people wrote viewable for browsing.
But we'd need an actual implementation for moderated townhalls in the chat system.

@GeorgeStocker Yeah, I considered trying to write something to pull out the conversation in true Q&A format, but I figured most people wouldn't use the explicit reply functionality, so at that point it's more of an exercise in futility, heh. Still, for those of us who were present, I thought it was really quite valuable, a lot of good responses :)

I need to go back and read everyone else's, it took the entire hour for me to write responses.
The good news is that with a text chat, there was less of 'He stole my answer', since everyone can write their response without having to see others respond first.

ARGH, Just got back -- missed the town hall! I am frustrated :-(

@Josh I think most of the key issues were covered, so at least you have the transcript.

That's good to hear. I'm pretty sure who I'm voting for anyway
How did it go? Were you there the whole time @Tim?

9:38 PM
@Josh I thought it went really well. And yeah, I was.

@RebeccaChernoff even though I missed it live, it will be very helpful reading the transcript. Again, a big thank you for coordinating these Town Halls! (And everything else you do for us, of course!)
@TimStone I'm glad to hear that; reading the transcript now

@Josh Indeed gives @RebeccaChernoff her piece of cake

is playing around with javascript to see if she can get some kind of quick chat summary thing going
\o/ cake!

@RebeccaChernoff anything I can help with since I failed in my offer to help real-time? :-)
It is such a nice day here! I even have the windows open! \o/

VOTES CAST
coughs

9:57 PM
I count 37 questions going by the starred list.

@RebeccaChernoff I'm still reading, I'll tell you if my count is different
also, LOL:

Question is....how close to 296 answers are there? (;

10:17 PM
@RebeccaChernoff yeah I am having a difficult time matching answers with questions!
I am really glad I didn't try and do this in real-time!
It would have been impossible!

ROFLMAO
That's hysterical. But it doesn't even describe how to write a good answer!
@RebeccaChernoff are you organizing the questions and answers in a meta post or anything?

@Josh - Hey, I need a bit of help, dunno if this is your area of expertise, but...

@Moshe Ask away

I'm setting up a VirtualBox server on Ubuntu.
The server genearlly runs without X started, in "command line" mode, if you will.

10:30 PM
OK

Is it possible to start Windows in a Virtualbox at startup?

@RebeccaChernoff this is really difficult!!!

@Josh, nice. I was gonna go through and create a 37x8 array mapping question message id to answer message id and then creating a simple ui on jsfiddle to view all questions a candidate answered and all answers to a question.

@Moshe Microsoft Windows or X Windows?

MS windows

10:31 PM
@RebeccaChernoff is what I am doing helpfu at all?

Its an Ubuntu server

@Moshe Yes, it's possible

But we need Windows AND Ubuntu
How would that work? Any idea to set that up?

Two different VMs
Each VM should have one OS

The host is Ubuntu

10:32 PM
Then make a VM for Windows
Maybe I misunderstand what you're saying?

Let me try again. I have an Ubuntu server.

Sorry, I'm working with the Town hall Transcaript right now
@Moshe OK

Ok
I want to run MS windows on the same network as a server

OK

We have one "server". The solution we came up with (Me, my dad, a friend) is to run Windows in a VM.

10:35 PM
OK, sounds like a good solution

My one question is, when Ubuntu reboots, it does not start a gui.

Do you want it to?

Will that prevent windows from running?

You mean VirtualBox

Yea, VirtualBox

10:35 PM
I am not sure. I know with VMware Server, no
I have a VMware server box right next to me, the host OS is Ubuntu and it doesn't even have X installed
I do not know about VirtualBox however
Sorry. I could look it up for you when I finish what I'm doing

What does VMWare cost?
Okay, thanks.
Basically, I need to know how to make VirtualBox start windows on boot and possible X if that is required.

@Moshe VMWare Server is free and can do exactly what you suggest

Ok

It's designed for this kind of application

Run both OS side by side?
At the same time?

10:37 PM
It is managed via a web interface. HOWEVER you will need Windows to set it up
@Moshe To start up a bunch of VMs when the host boots

Let me ask you this: how would I add VirtualBox as a "startup entry"?

Probably using an Upstart entry, or a script under /etc/init.d
Good question for SuperUser or Unix.SE
VMware Server starts automatically

kk brb getting food, then tackling the problem.

Q: How do I make VirtualBox start when Ubuntu Server starts?

MosheI have VirtualBox and I want to install MS Windows in it. How can I make VirtualBox start when Ubuntu Server does, so that I don't need to manually start Windows?

@Josh - asked.

@Moshe upvoted :-)

10:54 PM
Thank you.
</voting-ring:superuser>
@josh, what's the opposite of startx?

@Moshe what do you mean?

I have X open and I want the command line back
Well, Ctrl+alt+F8 is my terminal.
How would I shut down the GUI and go into command line?

@Moshe do you want to quit X?

yea

@Moshe Do you have a desktop environment loaded, like Gnome?

11:05 PM
yep

If so, log out

Gnome itself
Ah, that's it.
I'm using it now...
switching to phone

LOL, this is crazyness

11:21 PM
What is crazy?

I wish the SO elections didn't cause a ban of images in applications.

The following accurately depicts "my moderation philosophy":

I am trying to create that, it's difficult!

@badp A cyclone of doom capable of causing plenty of collateral damage?

11:31 PM
@badp that is really distracting me ;-)
PLEASE
MAKE
IT
STOP

WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

@Josh: life is distracting you from THAT AWESOME VIDEO

@TimStone please help me scroll it out of view!!!
@MichaelPetrotta The Digest is :-)

Hahah

@TimStone A reasonable start, insanity spiral, then a wisdom gifting fall. Goto 10, do not pass go, do not collect 200 reps.

11:32 PM
Ah, very good

I need a break, if anyone wants to take over the digest for me, just let me know ;-)

11:53 PM
OK, armed with a beer, I feel the strength to continue returning!!!
