@Knu Stylesheet is ambiguous really - it could be CSS or XSLT, or probably something else too

Hi
See this question here

Q: How to get image slider?

rajeshrtHi, I want the image slider similar to http://demo.rockettheme.com/?template=dominion the speciality of this slider is that when we mouseover on next button it shows the preview of next image If anybody know this kind of slider please send me the download link. Please help thank you

I cant find the question on meta
that refers to reccomentadtions
(which are related to programming)
bu are just reccomendations

@Knu You'll find most of the users on here have 2500 rep on SO easily :(
@Trufa are you looking for a justification to close it?
@Trufa I'm pretty sure you don't want this one meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/70064/product-recommendations

@drachenstern Not exactly, I don't quite remember what the "exact policy is", what to refresh.

Q: Can we prevent some of the low-quality questions from entering our system?

Jeff AtwoodStack Overflow has been wildly successful. And maybe in some ways too successful. I am concerned that Stack Overflow is being inundated by a stream of low-quality questions from users who are accidentally poisoning our well -- by turning off and turning away the core answerers who do all the rea...

@drachenstern Thanks! but not exactly, since this is not a product recommendation per-se, it is not as localized. I' take a look at your second one now.

6:09 AM
Yeah it's not, but it's really just a variant on "gimme teh codez"
a cross between that and "I can't use google"

@drachenstern yes, it's strange, because he actually ask for something specific, a jquery slider with image captions on the arrows. I don't think this kind of question hurts the site but it's vaguely a programming related question, very very close to a LMGTFY / RTFM question.

Yeah, I think it's a "I can't use google" question
I would help him with it in chat, but not as a question
I personally think it's too localized

6:31 AM
Oh noes!!! I just lost 350 rep on Meta.
....after initiating a rep. recalc.
Baaaad idea.

@GeorgeEdison It was going to happen eventually but it's never nice!

I realize that. But I have no explanation for the lost rep. I had just finished deleting some posts that had a bunch of downvotes.

@GeorgeEdison Active meta users having their accounts deleted is another reason
All their votes go with them, I believe

Oh....

@YiJiang yeah, that happens too :\

6:35 AM
@YiJiang Hi! I've been wanting to talk to you

As expected, StackApplet lets me know when my rep changes.

I have found that pretty much ALL rep recalc is bad

....and boy it changed.

@Trufa You should've said that earlier then, I was here when you first entered, and still am :)

@YiJiang Didn't see you :)
@YiJiang the other day I visited your profile stackoverflow.com/users/313758/yi-jiang

6:37 AM
@Trufa Yesh?

and I don't know if you are aware
that the link in about me
the do have rel="nofollow"

Down from 330 characters to 299 on codegolf

Stack Overflow users with more than 2k reps can also help out here - rel="nofollow" is disabled for user profiles of users with more than 2k reputations

@Trufa Hmmm... it does

I thought I had a good solution before, ... shaving 30 characters is NICE :D
using System;class D{static void Main(){string a="s",z="",w=" on the wall",q=", ",p=".\n",b=" bottle",c=" of beer";for(int O=99;O>=1;)Console.WriteLine(O+b+(O>1?a:z)+c+w+q+O+b+(O>1?a:z)+c+p+(--O>0?"Take one down and pass it around, "+O:"Go to the store and buy some more, 99")+b+(O==1?z:a)+c+w+p);}}

6:38 AM
Grrr... I'll get Jeff on that

lol
the
only that doesn't
is the website:
@YiJiang just wanted to warn you
abd by the way
I enjoyed w3fools.com a lot
although I think

Ah, frack, I misread his comments on that post. I'll remove that line, hrm... still, it's useful to have that link there

of course
I don't think Jeff will have more that one per user outgoing link without rel="no follow"
not a chance in the world

The website link doesn't have nofollow though, and since I don't have a website...

yep
exactly
you could help
sorry
you could hhelp w3fools.com
with there seo
having a link from SO is a push
@YiJiang BTW I cant believe you have no website
!!!
How on earth did that happen??
:)
?
no time

6:45 AM
@Trufa Hehe, no, I'm just a student, as you can see from my profile

@YiJiang He I've seen some useful stuff come from that keyboard any way

2 hours later…

Alright, major refactoring part one - done!
Now to squash the bugs that that might have caused...

2 hours later…
11:09 AM
I am hugely annoyed with the stackauth route right now
There are requests that are taking 15 or more seconds to complete

When I saw this question about whether critical questions are allowed on the Christianity SE
2
Q: Are rational questions allowed?

Johannes Schaub - litbProposal: Christianity Should this also allow questions that critically ask about the validity of the Christian faith, the Christian bible history and such? And questions about what the bible says about homosexuals, about women and such? I personally don't like seeing stackexchange grow up to ...

I thought to myself, the other religious sites could take a look at how the Apple SE deals with critical questions :)
2
runs away
But I have to say it again, the Apple SE site looks really nice.

1 hour later…
12:45 PM
Hm, I was under the impression that Area51 discussion questions was having an "early" meta
TomWij disagrees with me

@badp Well, I thought they were suppose to serve as a Meta before the sites launched - after they launched, there's no need to post on A51 discussions

1:18 PM
Yay for gratuitous CSS3 action!

why should that be an image?
@YiJiang That's everything that is right with CSS3
2

Well, except for the unfortunate Chrome / Webkit bleed bug...
>_<

raises eyebrow
link?
last I saw, Chromium does chat reply circles just right
(is it a problem with inner shadow?)

@badp Most likely, yes
Hang on, ping me on, say, Gaming, I want to inspect chat's replay thingadongdong
Hmmm... let's see, linear gradient, text shadow, border radius, box shadow
But not inset box shadow, which is what I'm using here

well, okay, the behaviour isn't right

1:27 PM
Blog post, with links to Bugzilla reports

yup yup, repro'ed on yesterday's daily
let's see if there's going to be one today

Also, no gradient - I think I got the syntax for -webkit-linear-gradient wrong

btw I don't have the strength to translate this into English:

Hmmm... only Safari 5.03 supports the new linear-gradient syntax. Have to stick with the old version then

Q: When new officialy stackexchange site added to stackexchange data explorer?

Am1rr3zAI like data.stackexchange.com/ but I am curious when new site add to this site? now unix and linux and Apple officialy launched but not add to this site yet?

1:32 PM
@YiJiang I found (partial) work around for that webkit bleed, if you're interested

@balpha Sure, link me

(it happens in quite a lot places on apple.se)

@badp Done

you can control the color of the bleed by prepending a no-op shadow: -webkit-box-shadow: #YOURCOLOR 0 0 0 inset, [rest of your shadows here]
obviously only works if you have a constant background color

@balpha What's #yourcolor?
Oh, the background color

1:34 PM
also, the bug is fixed in the dev version: paulirish.com/2011/chrome-inset-box-shadow-bug-fixed
I don't know if they'll backport it

@balpha Odd, @badp up there says he can reproduce it

custom 500 page hooray!

@YiJiang I didn't try it -- Paul Irish says it's fixed in 10.0.628.0

I have 11.0.652.0

@badp Hmmm...? When did it get up to 11?

1:37 PM
blame the Irish ;)

@YiJiang When dev got to 10 I guess
well, I guess it's fixed, but only partially

@balpha Okay, that was of no use at all - what is it suppose to do anyway? I don't see any difference with and without that

you can't get rid of the bleed, but you can at least make the bleed the same color as the background

Ah, I see - the outer background color. Right

yes. it has no effect at all if the browser works correctly
which is the point :)
look at the "Questions" nav element on top of apple.stackexchange.com/questions
open in inspector and remove the first inset box shadow

1:48 PM
Ah, yes. And the color around the bubble is solid. Very nice workaround
@balpha You missed one ;)

we missed several
we didn't do it everywhere
it's pretty annoying because you have to pretty much do it for every element individually
it's pretty visible on the avatar in the user profile; we should probably add the workaround there (although that isn't fixable 100%, but at least it can be made a little less ugly)

Also, Apple.SE meta has a [poo-storm] tag :D
...which is the second result for 'poo storm' on Google

2:08 PM
any suggestion for a quick'n'easy openId provider I can use as long as myOpenid is offline?
myId.com looks easy enough

Hmmm... a couple more Apple.SE design bug
Text shadow same color as text
There's also that weird link color in the new user info box on Meta.Apple, but it's gone for me now

Hi! :)

2:58 PM

@balpha there is a means to use your own domain, I have yet to explore it though

oh, I do that
that's why I don't have a big problem with myopenid being down
I just have to delegate somewhere else
but to SO, it looks like the same openid

ah yeah, it would
Glad you mentioned that, I was about to flush cookies :)

3:15 PM
Oh god, the Apple SE 'answered' box's 'plastic' shine is created using box-shadow...
Holy, imgur is down!

the internetz are breaking down!

Teh aw3some upload button doesn't work no more :(

it's up again already

It works, but it's very slow
This screenshot is been uploaded very slowly

and myopenid is back to the living as well

3:23 PM
Hmmm, this 45 kb image is taking forever to upload

Hmm, I thought when you refreshed a chat window, it didn't show you the deleted messages placeholder, just like the transcript.

@RebeccaChernoff It does, doesn't it? Or is that a new feature?

@RebeccaChernoff It never did, and it still doesn't.

I know it isn't now.

the "deleted" placeholder is always visible in live chat, and has always been

3:26 PM
the SOTHC room looks a little silly now.

@RebeccaChernoff Why don't you lock it till the start of the meeting?

@RebeccaChernoff when does it start? tomorrow. subscribe'd.

@RebeccaChernoff meh... Doesn't have to be clean slate, does it? Real town halls have people walking in there all the time :)

I just saw someone urinating on our town hall today, in fact.
3

@TimPost We don't have to stretch the analogy that far...

3:31 PM
Wish I had my camera.. right under a sign "BAWAL UMIHI DITO" (It is forbidden to urinate here) ... urinating

@YiJiang are you sure that wasn't supposed to be a reply to @TimPost?

@balpha Not originally, but in retrospect...

@balpha Analogies are like silly putty. It is a crime to not articulate their full elasticity (that is, if we hope for people to be specific when using them)
@balpha, I hope you are laughing at the absurdity of what I just said.

What other people call "absurd" is daily routine for me. Remember, Jeff Atwood is my boss.
6

@balpha That would make great silly putty :)
I am officially done with the API from hell :) (at least for the next few hours)
In four weeks, I completely re-implemented Xen's XMLRPC API with a GET based solution that returns JSON. My #&(*$&( head hurts.

4:01 PM
@balpha by that logic, why make an ad-hoc room?

I see the need for town hall chats, but basically everyone answering a single question will be improving upon the previous answer, based on feedback
But as long as the drama stays off of MSO, I'm game :)
Most primary elections result in two candidates, or perhaps three if there is a strong independent party. Here, you'll have 10 people where the 10'th has learned from nine mistakes. It just seems goofy to me.

In the SF one, there wasn't really feedback before the next person answered. You can glance over the transcript if you want:

A: 2011 Moderator Elections - Town Hall Chat

Rebecca ChernoffThank you to everyone who participated, particularly the candidates! Virtual coffee is on me! The full transcript to the Town Hall Chat can be found here. Despite being in timezones all over, all 7 candidates were able to attend! Whether you were able to attend or are just reading the transcr...

@RebeccaChernoff, with all due respect, THIS IS SO.

That just means it'll be so crazy, there won't be time for conversational feedback live (;

@RebeccaChernoff , it will be very interesting to see what happens :)
@RebeccaChernoff, but if no room for feedback, it is hardly 'town hall' :)

4:14 PM
There is no way to know how it is going to play out.
I've managed to lose my crystal ball. ):
I can just hope it works, for some reasonable definition of works.

@RebeccaChernoff If worse comes to worse, fake a moderated room

@RebeccaChernoff It will work either way.. if it becomes a food fight, you know how not to do it next year.

Add all mods and candidates to the explicit write list
when spam becomes overwhelming, make it a gallery
then tell people to ask their question via mod flags, or something.

It will be an interesting experience, either way :)

I'm happy to feed questions, but I don't think there's a suitable/super-easy/convenient way for collecting those questions.

4:20 PM
@RebeccaChernoff There isn't an easy way. Someone has to moderate the questions and randomize the order in which we get to answer them.

@RebeccaChernoff If mod flags can't do, how about a side room for questions? Pick questions from the starred list, then from the transcript.

While I'd love to discuss my plan for defending against velociraptors with welbog .. ..

I'm still optimistic an open format will work. Perhaps I'm being obtuse, but hey (;

Yeah, I did say "if worse comes to wrose" :)

Note, for the record my objection.

4:22 PM
@badp, yeah, if I do anything, that's what I keep thinking, but even that seems meh.

Next year, I suggest a list of questions for candidates to answer, in random turn

@TimPost This would not be on-topic. (:

which the community has decided are important
During the nomination and primary phase, a 'questions' tab
sort of like area51

@TimPost, but how does that fit into a chat format? PersonA, answer QuestionX. Person B, answer QuestionY. ... Ok, now PersonA, answer QuestionZ. PersonB, you're up with QuestionX.

Q: List of questions for candidates in 2010 moderator election

T..This thread is opened for questions addressed to (all) the candidates in the December 2010 moderator election. If questions are kept simple enough they can be answered fully in the comments, and doing so would reduce the tendency for pre-election voting on the candidates rather than their comm...

4:25 PM
Candidates get nn minutes to answer them
in a random order

Just make Meta questions for them to answer

Right, asking questions in Meta is great, this is a supplement, not a replacement.

@badp we don't want votes on answers to them

@TimPost people will be able to vote ("star") on messages

@badp in this phase, people should be making up their own minds, not following the hive

4:27 PM
@TimPost I see I'm not alone there, but I'm less concerned about voting on people's views than I am about voting on people

It has two drawbacks - some may be more qualified than those who can articulate well using English
and the reverse of that
I'm not at all condemning the process, I just think this phase of it is broken

Anyways, I need to get some stuff done before the GameDev THC. Back later.

yawns G'morning all.

The cool part, SPI ( who owns Debian ) uses a similar system to SO to elect officers
Debian politics always flood the town hall style discussions
if SO can .. perhaps .. fix that .. wow :)
3
I'll happily run and participate for five more years just to see that happen :)

Q: Meta activity unavailable on Election page...

MosheI've voted in the elections, going through the profiles. I also looked at the meta participation and I noticed that one user's meta activity was shown as "meta temporarily unavailable". All of the other candidates had their meta ratios shown. I refreshed the page and that didn't help. (The cand...
